Isaac Yamada - Hello St. Louis
#1

February 25th 2019
The rink is completely empty apart from one player who stands alone at the blue line. The dim lights line the hollowed walls of the home of the St. Louis Scarecrows, casting shadows across the corners of the ice and painting a dramatic spotlight picture on the glimmering white ice. "Yamada" shines in bright white lettering off of the maroon Scarecrows jersey as the player winds up to take a slap shot, releasing the puck and watching it slam into the boards a few feet from the net. He shakes his head and skates down to pick it up before flipping it off the boards and passing it to himself. Most of the guys went home almost an hour ago, exhausted from the coaches rigorous off-season conditioning, but not Yamada. For him these hours are where he will improve the most, and after being selected in third round there is certainly a lot of room to improve. Yamada skates to the bench and grabs a sip of water before making his way back to center ice doubled over on his stick. Shooting has never been his strongest suit but lately it's been downright embarrassing.

The score from the last Scarecrows game is still emblazoned on the Jumbotron, boasting the Scarecrows most recent home victory over the Raptors. A close game, but that's when players develop the most. Yamada's name didn't appear on the score sheet a single time, not even in the hits category. It was an empty game for him, and a disappointing end to the first leg of pre-season. The Halifax Raiders are the next opponent, facing off against the Scarecrows on the road. As Yamada picks up the puck and toes the blue line to prepare for another shot, a voice calls out from the bench.

"Isaac!" the voice calls out. "Do you need a ride home man? I've got my car warming up out front if you're ready to go."

Yamada turns around to see team mate Nicolas Fleming leaning up against the boards, stick clutched tight in his hand a brilliant smile plastered across his face. The sheen of the ice refracts off his teeth and makes like a sunbeam.

"Nah, I'm good!" Isaac yells back at his team mate. "I'll just take the bus!"

Fleming shakes his head and steps out onto the ice, stick now dropped to the ice to prop him up. He makes his way towards Isaac and pulls the puck from off his stick, rifling it into the net for an easy top corner shot.

"It's two in the morning dude." Fleming laughs. "There aren't any busses running at this time. Come on, let's get back to the house. We have a big game tomorrow. We can make some popcorn and grab a show before we hit the sack."

Fleming and Yamada are room mates. With Yamada being an international import player from out of Canada, Fleming offered to host him for the duration of the season at his own place in the city.

"Give me five minutes." Yamada replies. "I'm just working on one last thing."

"Alright, make sure you shower before you even get near my car." Fleming says with a chuckle before turning to head towards the bench again.

Yamada picks the puck back and stands at the left side neutral dot. He rings the puck around the boards and blasts his way towards the opposite side of the line, intercepting the pass and dumping it back the other way before repeating the process. Agility and speed are essential, it's what he always reminds himself. You can't make it anywhere as a defense man if you can't stop the puck from leaving the offensive end, then you're just a warm body on the ice. Yamada rings another one but it skips his stick and flies down into the other end, stopping near the goal line in an almost taunting fashion. Yamada taps his stick and turns to face the puck before looking at the bench and seeing Fleming waiting on his phone, stick and bag at his side. Fleming looks up and gives a wave before taking a call and heading towards the exit. Isaac stops off onto the ice and looks at the home team score sheet sitting on the bench beside him. The column of zeroes is like a blast in the face, a refreshing bath of cold water to wake him up. He needs to do better.

"Big day tomorrow." Yamada says, tapping the roof of the hallway down into the dressing rooms with his hand. "Hello St. Louis."
