Raiders vs Raptors
Game 196
Postgame Show

Jake Tucker, 98.9 Raptors Radio Network: Welcome to the Raptors Post Game Show sponsored by Wawa. What a game we just saw, the Raptors which currently sit at the bottom of the league standings and out of playoff contention finally saw their boiling point hit tonight.

Matt Reed, Co-Host: Boiling point reached and statement made surely. It was a win, no question we'll take those all day. But the Raptors weren't going to take cheap shots from the Raiders. 2 minutes into the game Halifax's Troy Reynolds goes after Raptors Akashi SixNine. While this is going on, Halifax's cheapshot artist Matt Kholin tries to jump in from the side and gets intercepted by Raptors Knute Knurtsson. They throw Knute out of the game for instigation, for defending his teammate. Meanwhile on the bench you've got the assistant coach holding back Darrow, Brain and Vanderberg from going over the boards to help their teammates.

Tucker: While that's going on, at center ice you've got Halifax's Slothface trying to go toe to toe with the Raptors' Jake Novak. They fight to a draw. They throw Novak out of the game. Meanwhile back up near the Raps bench you've got Akashi beating the holy hell out of Reynolds until a ref jumped into stop it. Truly unbelievable.

Reed: The head office needs to look at Halifax's behavior that game, selling penalties and flopping to get more of them. Its not unlike them, that's how they play, cheap. But cmon now.

Tucker: I agree and with that lets check out the Wawa Matchup of the Game.

Wawa Matchup of the Game

Tucker: Halifax centers versus Colorado’s centers

With the line brawl at the very start of this game resulting in two-thirds of Colorado’s top line being ejected from the game, Colorado saw all the ingredients for an ugly day in Halifax. Without leading scorer Knute Knurtsson and third year winger Jakub Novak, the Colorado coaching staff had to shuffle some line combinations on the fly. This saw many new forward combinations, and forced centers Michael Scarn, Ja’Aj Coitus-Wagg, and Jake Peralta to carry a larger load. That trio won 59 percent of their faceoffs (36/61), Peralta scored a clutch power play goal to open the scoring at 17:02 of the first period, and Coitus-Wagg and Scarn both played over 22 minutes for the Raptors. They played heavy minutes on special teams, helping Colorado’s league best penalty kill stay a perfect 7/7 tonight and convert twice on the power play. While this season has been underwhelming and disappointing, Colorado has to be encouraged by the performance of their supporting cast in this game.

Reed: It definitely was a lot bloodier after the 1st period penalty wise. Because of that, there was a lot of chances for Colorado and Halifax to sneak a few power play goals in there but only Colorado did, scoring twice on the PP.

Tucker: Also, with the top two guys back in the locker room with match penalties it allowed for a better showcase of rookie talent. Coitus-Wagg and Peralta both gave the coaches the best look of their skill and potential with how they stepped up today. This will only help their chances at a better selection in the upcoming SHL Draft and for their role on the team next season.

Reed: Without a doubt Jake and lets roll right into talking about the third man who saw extended action and tonight's Built Ford Tough Clutch Performer, Michael Scarn.

Built Ford Tough Clutch Performance

Tucker: Center Michael Scarn, Colorado Raptors

Despite his recent trade request, Scarn is not waiting around halfheartedly for his new SMJHL home. In light of the game misconduct thrust on key contributors Jakub Novak and Knute Knurtsson, Scarn was given the opportunity to showcase his skills as a first line SMJHL center. The sneaky American center had an assist on Parker Smeb’s game winning power play goal, two shots, a hit, and won 16/29 faceoffs against Halifax’s Matt Kholin and Mr. Faceoffs in a team leading 23:31 time on ice. This season hasn’t been what Scarn may have hoped for him, but tonight he showed flashes of the skill that led him to be drafted in the second rounds of both the SMJHL and SHL drafts by Colorado (14th overall, SMJHL S45) and Winnipeg (27th overall, SHL S46).

Tucker: Thats our show, we will be back same time on Tuesday for what we expect to be one hell of a rematch between Halifax and Colorado. Will we see a repeat? Is this the start of a rivalry between Halifax and Colorado? And what will the reaction be when your Colorado Raptors hit the ice? Join us right here tomorrow night on the Raptors Radio Network and stay with us after the game for the postgame show featuring interviews, highlights and more. That's tomorrow, right after the Raps - Raiders game. Until then, goodnight from Halifax.
