S46 Colorado Raptors Team Awards Show
Presented by Nissan, Innovation That Excites™

Welcome all and thank you for attending the S46 Colorado Raptors Award show! My name is Johnny Hamilton, the newly named Co-General Manager of the Raptors, and I have the pleasure of being the master of ceremonies for today’s proceedings.

I’m joining team leadership at a weird time. Coming off a challenging season that saw Colorado mired at the bottom of the league, Sebastian Frost, myself, and the management team have been working hard to turn around our franchise for S47. We will move this team closer to the team’s impressive S44 and S45 playoff pushes, in hopes of capturing Colorado’s first Four Star Cup in 20 seasons.

I first want to thank Sebastian Frost @39alaska39 for allowing me the opportunity to hop into SMJHL management with the Raptors. On behalf of Sebastian and myself, we also want to give a heartfelt thanks to Kim Jong Fun @Good_Ole_Kimmy, my predecessor as coach and Co-GM, for his years of leadership with the franchise.

We’ll get started around 3pm EST today.

Welcome back! Starting off, we have our first two awards.

Team Leadership Award:

This year’s nominees are:

D Cassius Darrow @hhh81
D Jules Watt @nykonax
C Knute Knurtsson @Ason94

And your winner is….

Raptors D Cassius Darrow! Raptors

After serving as team captain for the second consecutive season, Darrow won this award in a landslide amongst his teammates, capturing 77.8% of the vote. A constant active presence on the ice and in the locker room, Darrow was asked to carry a heavy load this past season, and did his best to support his teammates and keep morale up.

The Alexander Zajac Trophy (Most Dedicated Player)

Dedication takes many forms, especially when things don’t always go as planned. The nominees for this award gave their all to help the team however they could.

The nominees are:

D Cassius Darrow @hhh81
D Jules Watt @nykonax
C Knute Knurtsson @Ason94
 RW Nick Brain @StadiumGambler

And the winner of the Zajac Trophy is…

Raptors D Cassius Darrow Raptors

While the season may not have been what he hoped for when he returned for his third season in the J, Darrow continued to put his all into the team. Whether it was blocking a shot or taking another shift on the PK, Darrow was a role model on the ice, as well as off it. He made sure his teammates were aware of any opportunity to help them better their players, which would in turn better the team.

The Colton Hagan Trophy (Top Two-Way Forward)

Sometimes outstanding defensive plays go unnoticed. This season, with the league’s highest grit/20 of anyone, the Raptors knew a thing or two about strong two-way play. The nominees for this award combined skilled offensive play with responsibility in their own end.

The nominees are:
W Jakub Novak @Esso2264
C Ja’Aj Coitus-Wagg @Jaemistightdabs
C Knute Knurtsson @Ason94
W Parker Smeb @O4L
W Nick Brain @StadiumGambler

And the winner is:

Raptors RW Parker Smeb! Raptors

With the losses of so many talented players from the S45 roster, Parker Smeb was asked to carry a heavier offensive load. As the season wore on, it was clear he was a dominant force on both ends, laying massive hits or scoring a big goal in equal measure. He was the glue the kept the engine going for the Raptors.

The Potato Chips Trophy (Top Offensive Forward)

Potato Chips was one of the great offensive forces in franchise history, putting up 24 goals and 56 points on Colorado’s legendary S27 Four Star Cup champion squad. The following nominees embody his spirit as offensive forces for the Raptors.

LW Jakub Novak @Esso2264
C Knute Knurtsson @Ason94
RW Parker Smeb @O4L

And the winner of the Potato Chips Trophy is…

Raptors RW Parker Smeb! Raptors

What can we say, Smeb was a revalation for the S46 Raptors. He finished first on the team with 22 goals, second with 41 points, and first in the league in hits (127). His P/20 rating of 1.00 was second in the entire SMJHL, and he lead juniors with seven game winning goals.

Thank you for your performance this season, Parker, and best of luck with Chicago. You’re gonna need it going against my guy Darrow and the Stampede!

To present our next award, we have a surprise for you all. The Colorado franchise has seen several names and logos in its history, and we’d be remiss if we didn’t recognize a legend in that history. Here today to present the next award is team founder and original general manager, Gilliam Tusk, escorted by his grandson, Vancouver and Buffalo legend Brynjar Tusk!

The Kristoffer Ruud Trophy (Top Defenseman)

GT: “Hello. While your new color scheme is basic and your logo is ugly, this is still my team, deep down. I loved my time running Colorado and winning our only Four Star Cup in our third year.

During that time, we had one of the greatest defensemen to ever play the game in Kris Ruud. The boy could skate and the boy could score. None will ever be better than that, which is why we award the top defenseman each year with the Kristoffer Ruud Trophy. This says our nominees are:

D Cassius Darrow @hhh81
D Jules Watt” @nykonax

BT: And the winner of the S46 Ruud Trophy goes to…

Raptors D Cassius Darrow! Raptors

No one can really be surprised by this. He led the Raptors’ blueliners in scoring for the third straight season, was top 10 in league defensive scoring, 2nd in the league in minutes played, and finishes his SMJHL career with the eighth most blocked shots in Colorado history. He was asked to do everything and, at times, carry the team on his back.

Congratulations, Cassius!

The Aleksandr Aleksandrov Trophy (Top Goalie)

You don’t think about goaltending until you don’t have it. Despite a challenging season, the Raptors’ goaltending battled through. The nominees for this  year’s award are:

G Aleksandr Aleksandrov (II) @dmuda11
G Yuri Ushakov @BRayne

And the winner is….

Raptors G Yuri Ushakov!  Raptors

The second year starter followed up his solid rookie season with a bit of a challenging sophomore campaign. He didn’t let this get him down, playing in 43 games and winning 15. He saw a ton of play time (2458 minutes, 2nd in the league), and faced a league high 1049 shots this year. He faced adversity with a smile as he kept battling for the team in front of him, and to that we can only say, thanks Yurk!

Top Rookie Trophy

It’s hard to be a big player in your rookie season. The opportunity’s not always there, but our nominees for top rookie all made the most of their chances. The nominees are…

D Akashi SixNine @FourFour
C Ja’Aj Coitus-Wagg @Jaemistightdabs
LW Juulius Smonk @storm
RW Julio Tokolosh @Julio Tokolosh

And your winner is….

Raptors RW Julio Tokolosh! Raptors

Mooooooo til the cows come home! Our favorite bovine on the scoring lines takes home some hardware. After a challenging rookie season where he only scored 8 points, the gifted playmaker showed some scoring touch. His 6 goals were 7th on the team, and he tied for second with two game winning goals. He is an absolute gem in the locker room, and I see a future star in this kid. He should take a huge step forward in his sophomore season.

I also want to take a moment to recognize the other nominees. SixNine was a talented, gritty player on the back end who added another penalty killer as he bounced between defensive pairs. Smonk, the former top pick, was a quiet presence that helped to calm others and be positive. He was also fairly productive in limited time. Late in the year, after bouncing around the fourth line, JCW finally got his chance and ran with it. As a third line, shutdown center, JCW was a force at even strength and on the PK. We expect big things from him!

The Zinaida Titova Trophy (Season MVP)

For the final awards, I want to step aside and allow General Manager Sebastian Frost to take the stage. In his three seasons as GM, Frost’s brick by brick approach has led to some ups and downs for the Raptors, but he is without a doubt the best man for the job of leading the Raptors ever closer to their 25th anniversary in the league.

SF: Thank you, Johnny, for your kind words. I’m honored to serve as the General Manager of the Raptors. We’ve had some success, and the Meme teams will never die. I’ve been able to draft some pretty outstanding players, and we saw some of our success bear fruit. Next up, we have the Zinaida TItova Trophy for the Regular Season MVP.

The nominees are:

D Cassius Darrow @hhh81
LW Jakub Novak @Esso2264
D Jules Watt @nykonax
C Knute Knurtsson @Ason94
RW Parker Smeb @O4L

All of these men had strong seasons and are many of the reasons I will look back on this season as a learning experience. We never gave up when adversity came to us, and I am thankful to each of them for what they’ve done. This was our closest team vote of the season. Only one vote separated our winner from the second place vote getters.

The S46 team has spoken and our regular season MVP is….

Raptors D Cassius Darrow! Raptors

Being here tonight, I don’t know what else can be said about Cassius. He is a wonderful young man who put his all on the ice every night to help the team be successful. He worked with me almost daily to make sure we were in the best position possible to win games, and was the first to reach out to his teammates and rookies to keep their spirits up. He did everything we asked of him and more. I have no doubt he’s pissed he’s won so many awards today while the team didn’t have the successes he hoped for in his final season. To me, that truly embodies what it means to be an MVP and a Raptor for life.

The Scottey Crawfling Bowl (Playoffs MVP)

SF: Finally, we have the award I had the honor to name two seasons ago, after legendary Colorado goalie Scottey Crawfling, and the only award selected by the General Managers. When we had to make the hard choice to trade many of our players at the S44 deadline, Crawfling remained and literally carried a young group, the Meme Team, to the Four Star Cup Finals. I can think of no better person to name the Playoffs MVP trophy after than Scottey.

This year, our playoff performance was underwhelming, to say the least. Still, several players stood out in our first round battle with Halifax.

Your nominees for the S46 Crawfling Bowl are:

LW Juulius Smonk @Storm
C Knute Knurtsson @Ason94
D Cassius Darrow @hhh81

The winner is…

Raptors C Knute Knurtsson!  Raptors

We asked Knute to do a lot late in the year. He played almost 25 minutes per night in the playoffs, was one of our top scorers, and was a do-it-all forward for us in that Halifax series. While he only scored a single goal, his passing helped our top unit be productive and nearly knock out the Raiders.

Smonk, despite being a rookie, produced a ton in a second line position. Two goals, four points, and a +5 rating gave a glimpse of what we saw when we drafted him in the first round last year. We hope he builds off the momentum of his playoff performance as we ask him to continue to produce for us next season!

That's the end of the awards! Hopefully next year we can add a Four Star Cup to these proceedings!
