Josef was born in Plzeň during the late evening on November 12th. His father was an ex-Czechslovak First Ice goaltender and his mother worked for a local news publication. Josef’s father at this point stopped playing hockey after the country split from Slovakia and the league changed things, so he decided his playing time was at an end.

Josef grew up around the town, going to school like any normal boy, but by the time he turned five he knew what he wanted to be, a hockey player. He joined a local league for boys under ten and began learning how to skate and play. His father at first didn’t help him out too much with learning how to play, he was busy trying to support their family while bouncing between jobs, but Josef continued to learn and push himself forward because he wanted to be a great one day.

When Josef turned 11, his father decided to take him to a HC Plzeň game, their local Czech Extraliga team, and started to point things out the players would do, especially in the position of Center, since to him it seemed like Josef liked playing in a position like that. His father would start to work as a scout for the local team and would start bringing him to home games when he could, trying to show Josef more about the sport as a whole.

Josef competed in his first major under-14 tournament and won a gold medal with his local school team, scoring the only two goals of the final game. Carrying out the trophy was local legend Jiří Kučera, who used to play for center for HC Plzeň and one of the players Josef looked up to for inspiration. Josef’s father and Jiří spoke after the ceremony and arranged for Jiří to come out to one of practices for Josef’s team to teach all of the kids different techniques for playing the game and to especially help out with going for face-offs.

Jiří would come a couple more times during the next couple of years before Josef joined the under-18 team that affailiated itself with HC Plzeň, and he began to train and learn from the team’s trainers and would be able to interact with some of the players. He played on the third line as Center as they started their season and he would use every minute on the ice that he could, but could only rack up 2 goals and  8 assists over 32 games.

As players moved on from the under-18 team, Josef was able to climb up the lines, starting the next season on line 2 and he started off on fire, scoring 3 goals in his first five games while chipping in 4 assists. Due to an injury on the team’s first line center, Josef got the chance during his second year to play on the first line for the first 16 games before moving back down to the second line but continued to produce as the team finished 4th overall. Josef finished the 32 game season with 14 goals and 12 assists.

Josef’s final year in the under-18s saw him centering the first line for the team as they pushed for a league win that season. Josef continued to improve and pushed his pace for scoring for the season as he started off the first ten games with 8 goals and 5 assists, but his season was cut short when he was pushed down into the borders and broke his collarbone, keeping him out for the rest of the season. He went out after playing 17 games and racking up 14 goals and 9 assists.

Clearly Josef was absolutely angry at his situation, injuries always are the worst and it came at the worst time as the team pushed for glory but they were unable to reach the finals of their league season. Josef finished up high school and continued to practice his skating until he could start working through his injury. It took some time to rebuild the strength back to where it was, but Josef continued to push himself until he got back to his form.

He had looked to join a team in the Czech Exraliga but had missed his window of opportunity as he took too long and none of the team’s wanted to pick him up at the time, so Josef had to look elsewhere and looked towards the SHL, where he knew he could start out in the SMJHL. He spoke to a league representative and learned that he had missed the draft and their season has already started but he could come in as a free agent and maybe a team would pick him up. He had to think about his choices, he could either stay in the Czech republic and try to get on one of the teams, or he could jump completely into unknown waters and try to be a free agent in the SMJHL.

He decided he would bring his talents outside of Czech and had something to prove.
