PGS S47 Game 54 - Detroit Falcons vs Vancouver Whalers
#1

Detroit Falcons (2-7-1) @ Vancouver Whalers (7-3-0)

Game Link

Hello and welcome to Simulation Juniors action from Vancouver, BC. I'm Jamie Hawkins from TSN here with a recap of game 54 of the season with the Detroit Falcons facing the Vancouver Whalers. Detroit has stumbled out of the gate posting an embarrassing 2-7-1 record. Espen Knutsen Jr has been fantastic for the Falcons while the rest of the team hasn't been fantastic. Vancouver on the otherhand has been fantastic so far. Though the team has posted a 7-3-0 record through 10 games, no players have really been carrying the load. The team relies on a much more balanced attack. The starting goaltenders are:

Jakub Hasek (2-7-1) for Detroit and Kasperi Braulin (3-2-0) for Vancouver.

Lets go to the first period highlights.

1st Period:
To say this period was all Whalers is an understatement. The Falcons couldn't stay out of the box with minors to Maugher, Rome and Gumba putting the team at the disadvantage for most of the period. The penalty kill and Jakub Hasek were the stars of this period. Without Hasek, Vancouver would have easily came away with both the early lead and likely the game. Vancouver sent 16 shots towards the Detroit net and Hasek turned away all 16. Braulin was no slouch either, saving all 6 shots he faced.

2nd period:
Detroit cannot seem to stay out of the box. After giving Vancouver 3 man advantages in the first period, Detroit matched that in the 2nd period. Gumba might be looking at more time on the bench in the near future as he took two more penalties to go along with his period call while Knutsen Jr also made his way to the box to end the frame. The Whalers finally broke the tie at 4:26 on the powerplay when Theo Morgan found the back of the next. His third of the year was assisted by Sami Raanta and Aaron Wilson, making Detroit and Gumba pay for their poor discipline. Detroit wouldn't go down so easily though. After Egor Kucherov was called for tripping, Detroit managed to wire one home on the ensuing powerplay when Josh Driver netted his fourth goal of the season. Raino Kyllonen and Miikka Salo had the assists on the play. Hasek again was sensational in the second turning away 9 of 10 shots for 25 saves after 2 while Detroit could only managed 9.

3rd period:
If the Falcons manage to pull out a victory, remember the name Jakub Hasek. Hasek was again great in the 3rd period, turning away an additional 11 shots to give him a total of 36 saves after 3 periods. The Falcons were once again flat in a game their goaltender was giving them. Though they could only manage 4 shots in the period, they did find the back of the net at the 2:52 mark when Franz Cooper scored his 5th of the season from Miikka Salo and Aaron Freakin Rome. Though Vancouver was the much better team throughout the period, they could not crack Jakub Hasek. In the dying minutes, Vancouver made a last ditch effort to tie the game when they pulled Braulin for the extra attacker. This would prove to be beneficial when Borromini Cannellini scored his 4th of the season from Jax Duggan to tie the game at 2. This would hold up and send the game to overtime, with the shots 38-13 for the dominate Whalers.

Overtime and Shootout:
The overtime period was not very eventful with neither team having much breakthrough. Vancouver had control most of the overtime but still only managed 2 shots. Braulin did not have to worry much with the Falcons managing 0 shots before the clock hit. Braulin ended with 11 saves on 13 shots while Jakub Hasek stonewalled the Whalers with 38 saves on 40 shots. Travis Bitties of the Falcons started the shootout, attempting to go five hole on Braulin who easily turned his away. Next up was Jon Forty-One of the Whalers who fooled Hasek with a fantastic deke to make it 1-0 Whalers. This would hold up as Gabster TheMagnuficent and Franz Cooper couldn't solve Braulin while Petr Mikulak was turned away by Hasek. Even though Hasek had his best game of the season, Vancouver pulled away with a hard earned 3-2 win.

Your 3 star selections of the game!

Your third star from the Vancouver Whalers! Borromini Cannellini
Your second star from the Vancouver Whalers! Theo Morgan

Siberia Sports Player of the Game

Jakub Hasek was asked to stand on his head and deliver a win for the Vancouver Whalers, and while ultimately his team let him down, our pick for player of the game goes to the goaltender who put the team on his back through a real tough game and put up an absolutely stellar performance.  All of the action was in Detroit's end all game along.  Hasek was absolutely drilled with shots all game long and despite that he only let in 2 goals on 40 shots.  He was able to keep Detroit in it and fighting all the way to the shootout.  We're going to be real clear, the point they picked up in this game belongs to Hasek.  He posted a brilliant .950 save percentage.  He'll be looking for his teammates to help him out a little bit more in the next one.

Siberia Sports Unsung Hero

Our pick for unsung hero of this game goes out to a guy who worked real hard all night, played in all situations, got on the score sheet, and even threw a couple of hits out.  That player is Vancouver's third line center, Aaron Wilson.  Wilson was second in ice time for the Whalers' forwards and played in all situations.  He was able to put up 1 assist a +1 and threw 2 hits in a real tight game score wise.  The stat that really wins him the unsung hero reward is the fact that he managed to go 19/28 in the faceoff dot.  He was asked to take the most faceoffs on his team and he won a large majority of them.  This helped his team in possession and to keep the attack on in the Detroit zone.  Congratulations to Aaron Wilson for being the unsung hero of the game!

Siberia Sports Play of the Game

When the pressure is on and every point counts in the standings, sometimes you need to go out there and get it done.  That's exactly what Jon Forty-One did when he took his shot against the red hot Jakub Hasek in the shootout.  The third line right winger got the call and he made it count, scoring the only goal of the shootout.  Forty-One elected to make some moves to fool Hasek and was able to deke him to find the back of the net.  Showing calm nerves and silky mitts, he deked to his back hand and then back to his forehand to roof the puck just over the pad of Hasek.  It was as close as it gets as the shot came from the top of the blue paint.  That's the kind of play you need to win games in the middle of the season and a reason his name was called to take the shot.

Looking back at this game, Detroit has ended up in shootouts in many different games. We are looking at this game mid way through the season and Detroit is 4/6 in games that went to shootouts. Surprisingly Detroit has not won or lost a game in overtime this season; their overtime periods have all went to shootouts. A big help in the Falcons shootout success may be Travis Bitties, the season 47 rookie that was selected #1oa.  Although he has scored 3 shootout goals so far this season both him and his team could not end up winning this game and Vancouver came out victorious.

Comment #2:

Jakub Hasek was the sole Detroit player that was picked as a 3 star, and was it sure a good choice. Hasek went 38 for 40 which is a 0.950 save percentage.  Hasek has been a huge help to the Detroit Falcons even when he is working with the very young defensive team that Detroit is working with this season.  The other two stars were Theo Morgan and Borromini Cannellini.  Both of those players scored a goal and helped Vancouver reach overtime.  They had 15 shots combined against Hasek, that is more than the Detroit Falcons total shots through the game.  In the end there was too much pressure on Hasekand the Detroit defense, and at some point the puck was bound to go in the net.

The Detroit Falcons and the Vancouver Whalers are two very different looking teams. The records prove this as Vancouver has been on a hot streak beating up the other teams that it comes across with a hot front six, Tauras Karazija, and the other defensive players. Detroit on the other hand has been struggling so far this season with only 2 wins.  Detroit may not be doing well, but they have a very young team and look to be on the rise in the midst of an assistant manager position change.  This was apparent from the start of the game. No need to go in depth, one stat speaks for the game. The Whalers shot 38 for 40 and the Falcons shot 11 for 13. Vancouver took advantage of this and won the game 3-2 although it went into overtime.

THE LAST LINE OF DEFENCE
The Detroit Falcons could go and give their goaltender a nice big hug or a firm handshake after standing on his head for this whole game. He faced more shots in the first period than the Falcons took in the whole game. These points might end up being crucial at the end of the season and Hasek had to face a total of 40 shots throughout the whole game and his team was unfortunately not able to get 1 more goal than the Whalers.
Rookie netminder Kasperi Braulin for the Whalers got his 4th win of the season. He has been a consistent help for the Whalers when Stevens gets called up to the bigs. Being able to trust a rookie netminder like Kasperi in big games like these and also having that safety net of a solid 2 goalie tandem makes it a lot easier for the Whalers staff when preparing for games. Having confidence and trust in your goaltender makes a big change on the ice for everyone.

PUN INTENDED?
The Vancouver Whalers seem to be doing something right when it comes to scouting. The late acquisition of Jon Forty-One ended up coming in handy as he registered a goal in shootout. Being his only ONE of the season so far, Jon was able to shake off the nerves of playing in the juniors and securing the 2nd point of the game by being the only ONE to score in the breakaway challenge. He wasn't really anywhere else on the scoresheet unfortunately, only registering 1 shot in the whole entire game, but he was able to get what the team needed, and that was a win.

1) How about that rookie goalie in nets for Vancouver? Braulin proved to be a valuable addition to the Whalers squad, as he came up big when called upon. Here is one of his better games, only allowing two goals. He's had a good crew to help him make a solid build and it shows every time he's in net. Here's a game that shows what he can do. Detroit has some real talent up front and for a rookie goalie to come in and play like Kaperi Braulin did here, it's no small feat. I think we can look back on this game in a few seasons and it will show us exactly the potential that Braulin had.

2) We talked about the young goalie coming up big, but how about those shot totals? On one hand, you've got a team like the Vancouver Whalers who have a lot of veteran talent. Lots of capped players who can play all over. They finished the night with fourty shots. On the other hand, the Falcons had a putrid 13 shots on net. And that's with an extra frame! Very hard for a team to win with an effort like that. The Falcons were very lucky to even get a point out of this, it really should have been a blowout

3) We talked about one goalie, now lets look at another Jakub Hasek stood on his head in this one, and unfortunately for him he got no help. Fourty shots on net! For a veteran goalie, in his third minor league season, this was nothing new. Teams need their vets to show up and it looks like he was the only one to do so for the Falcons. He's the sole reason his team squeaked out a point in this one. Sometimes as a goalie, the more shots you get, the better. It clearly allowed Hasek to enter a zone and frustrate the Whalers all night. I'm sure they were very happy to get a few by him, and then beat him in the shootout.
