Montreal Militia Militia vs Armada Anchorage Armada

PREGAME:

Militia Montreal Militia

Montreal make a staggering 6 600 kilometre trip to Anchorage today, holding a very respectable 5-4-0 start to their early SMJHL campaign. In this early part of the season they are averaging nearly 4 goals a game, but have likewise struggled defensively. They were semi-finalists last year, and with how the season has started for them it would be no surprise to see them up there again this season.

Key Players:

- James Truong, RW: With a very strong start to the season, Truong, a second-line forward, has been a very pleasant surprise and a valuable asset for Montreal. He has provided great secondary scoring while first line winger Hans Zucker has been relatively disappointing, which has been part and parcel of the offensive prowess of this Militia team.
- Kristoffer Svensson, C: The Swedish centre has been a vital piece across the board for the Militia. Sporting the best shooting % on the team at the moment, Svensson has also contributed majorly as a quarterback on the powerplay, as well as a top line penalty killer. A veteran of the SMJHL who will almost certainly be heading up to the big show next season, expect Svensson to be a core piece in the successes of Montreal this season.

Armada Anchorage Armada

Anchorage, one of the youngest teams in the league, and sporting the most rookies, has had an astounding 5-2-2 start to their season. Despite losing 5 key pieces of their squad to SHL call-ups over the summer, they have recovered just fine, with their top rookies performing above expectations, and their returning veterans topping their already high standards. Anchorage, priding themselves on the development of players and a great locker room atmosphere equally as much as they value winning, impressively also made the semi-finals as well last year, and with their strong core of youthful enthusiasm, will be aiming even higher this season.

Key Players:

- Xena, C: Xena has been astoundingly above expectations this season. The versatile forward has a jaw-dropping 14 points in 9 games thus far, and has formed a truly fearsome partnership with other superstar Olivier Cloutier on the first forward unit for the Armada. Xena and Cloutier's ability to make something out of nothing has been absolutely invaluable to the Armada, and you can expect to see the duo topping the team scoring charts by season's end.
- Stavros Halkias, C: The stocky Greek/British centre has been one of the surprises of the season in the SMJHL so far, notching 7 points in 9 games to top the rookie scoring numbers in the early part of the season. Whether or not Halkias can maintain his form is up in the air still, but there is a lot to be impressed with in the promising centre's game.

GAME SUMMARY:

First Period:
This period was very balanced, with the shots being 9-7 in favour of the Militia. Disciplinary issues were on display for roughly half the period, with Olin O'Dowd and Padraig Sarantez serving two minutes each for the Militia, while Andris Dzerins, Johnny Sins and Kalevi Karhunen combined for 6 PIM for Anchorage. It was Montreal who were beneficiaries of the lack of discipline in the period, as they broke through with the first goal of the game while Karhunen was serving his roughing minor. Griffith Cadwalader found a pocket of space, and threw the puck to the net with bodies in front, and with strong hand-eye coordination, Hans Zucker deflected the shot, that was on course to go wide, past Armada goalie Peter Larson for the go-ahead goal for Montreal. This would prove to be the only goal of the opening period in Anchorage.

Second Period:
Anchorage came out fired up in this period, and Montreal did not quite have an answer to it. The Armada heavily outshot the Militia 11-4 in this period, and Montreal served three penalties while Anchorage served none. However, the Militia survived the onslaught to kill all three penalties, and maintain a 1-0 lead after forty minutes of hard-fought hockey. They owe a lot of this to goalie Aleksi O'Koivu-Volkova, who really stood on his head throughout both periods to maintain the Militia advantage.

Third Period:
The difference between the second and third periods in this game were like night and day. After a dominant second period that showed a lot of promise to the fans in Alaska heading into the final twenty minutes, saying the Armada were below-par would be an understatement. Mustering a single shot on goal in the whole period while their opponents ran riot, the Boats seemed to have ran out of fuel after forty minutes. Just like in the first period, a lone deflected shot was the only occasion on which the twine was stretched in the 3rd, as S47 second round pick Ravyn Tedisko tipped in a shot from Henry Morris IV to give Montreal a two-goal advantage. This proved to be the final goal of the game, as the Militia called their shots right in order to sink the Anchorage battleship.

3 STARS OF THE GAME*:

3rd Star: Hans Zucker (RW) Militia  His goal proved to be a decisive one in the game, as his piece of brilliant hand-eye coordination provided him the night's game-winner.

2nd Star: Peter Larson (G) Armada  In a game of few goals, the netminders for both teams stood out today, as Larson, despite making 21 saves on 23 shots, was unlucky to find himself on the losing end following strong 1st and 3rd periods.

1st Star: Aleksi O'Koivu-Volkova (G) Militia  With how this game played out, the first two stars being goalies comes as no surprise. Keeping a shutout, unlike Larson, the Russian veteran was on the winning side of the match, posting an impressive 19-save shutout, many of the saves being crucial. Had he not been on form today, this game could have gone very differently.

Comment 3: Game Recap

The Militia headed up to Alaska to play the Armada. This was the first stop of a 3 game road trip for Montreal. About a minute and a half into the game both teams had penalties that canceled out on each other and we watched some 4 on 4 hockey. After that the Armada got into a little penalty trouble and at 12:47 of the first period Hans Zucker put the puck across the Armada goal line on the power player to go up by one! He was assisted by Anello and Cadwalader. The Irishman Padraig Sarantez got called for roughing at 17:12 but the Armada were unable to connect on that opportunity.

The Russian Connection, of the Primary Defense, both got into penalty trouble and were sent to the box. Oliver Kolzoff for hooking at 4:41 and the rookie Zarley Zalapski got called for the same crime at 10:43 of the second period. Even the rookie Ravyn Tedisko got called for Elbowing at 17:21. The fans were disappointed in the effort of the Armada and the boo birds were in full force as they were unable to score on all three of these power plays.

In the third period at 4 minutes and thirty seconds in, Ravyn Tedisko, made up for her elbowing penalty and put a 12 foot wrister in assisted by Morris and Cadwalader. Griffith Cadwalader is starting to heat up in the assist department chalking this one up as his seventh on the season. Tedisko doesn't see a ton of ice time but this is her third goal of the season and we can't wait to see what happens as she progresses through the ranks.

The real star of the game was goaltender Aleksi O'Koivu-Volkov as this was his first shut out of the season. This netminder is the last line of defense for the Primary Defense and is also Russian born. Although the Armada only had 19 shots on goal Aleksi made some very key saves and many positional saves. As the First Star of the game we got to interview the Montreal Goaltender for a brief moment. The Russian told us that he felt really good and was happy with his game but gave credit to the amazing job of the defense and control of the puck by the offense of his teammates. He told us that when you have a team controlling the game the way his team did in this outing that you don't really have to work that hard for a shutout.

Start of the season, teams still are struggling to find game rhythm and here we go 20 minutes of penalties in this game. Whole period teams were playing unequal strength. Definitely in situations like these that can be and most likely will be a game changer. And right after one of penalties in first period when Kalevi Karhunen was sent to the box for roughing, Militia managed to score one on power play. Hans Zucker was the first one to score after a rebound and give his team a lead and more or less secure the win for Militia. Have to say that second goal of the game was scored just 12 seconds after power play

Not the most difficult game for both goalkeepers. Aleksi O’Koivu-Volkova with 19 saves and a shutout. And now with 6-3-0 record. While on the other side it was Peter Larson who faced more shots but made more saves 21 out of 23. and a combined record of 5-3-2. Quite interesting decision from Anchorage team not to pull a goalie in very last minutes of the game. 2 goal lead is something you could try to fight with. At this stage of the season there might not be a huge difference between losing 3:0 or 2:0. Or maybe even they could have pulled a goal or two. This decision might have been made after seeing how team struggled with power play during the game.

From the start of the season Anchorage Armada has had problems with winning face offs. This game vs Montreal Militia once gain was a proof for it. Maybe this game wasn’t the best of examples, but Xena who supposedly is number one center on the team have won only 12 out of 30 face offs. MacLean had pretty good game in the circle with 14 wins from 25 throw ins. And third center Andris Dzerins added exactly 11 wins from 22 face offs. Overall at the end of the game Militia won 45 face offs and Boats won little bit less with 40.

This season is going to be rough for the Armada. Being one of the youngest teams in the league is always going to be tough when most of your Veterans are playing in the league above. With this in mind, it's clear what their path of progression is. They need to get used to the speed of the game in the SMJHL and hopefully the returning veterans can bring them up to that level quickly. It is going to be a long year for the rebuilding Armada but if this team can get some momentum going, the youth may just be what they need.

Both Goaltenders, while not having to play much, were both outstanding. Despite the scoresheet, Peter Larson played valiantly and tried to continue calming the rookies down. Having someone rock solid in net can help younger players out but even Larson has his limits. Letting in those two goals was enough for the Militia to end this game. On the other side, O'Koivu-Volkova was perfect in all parts of the game, getting the shutout and improving to a 6-3-0 record. To be fair, he didn't have a difficult night but when he was called upon, he was solid.

Momentum can change on a dime in sports and this game was no exception. While both teams kept it relatively stable during the first period, Montreal breaking through because of Anchorage's lack of discipline was enough to let the Militia focus on defence. This could be chalked up to the Armada's youth and inexperience but this is a problem that the Anchorages will need to deal with. This group of young stars can probably go far but before they can shock the world, they need to gel into a cohesive unit and overcome their deficiences

First Period:

In the first period, there were five total penalties. Three on the Armada and two on the Militia. There was only one goal scored in the first by Hanz Zucker at 12:47. The first set of penalties came early on in the game at just 1:26. A player from both teams got a penalty. The one on the Armada was for tripping and the Militia for hooking. There were two more penalties before Zucker sunk the shot with the assistance of Angello and Cadwalader. Sarantez of the Militia finished up the period with the final penalty for roughing.    (100)

Second Period:

The second period wasn't very eventful. Only three penalties in the period. No goals. The Militia only shot 4 times while the Armada shot eleven. This period may not have been the most entertaining but it shows that the teams defensive lines can really pull together to stop the puck. All three penalties were on the Militia. Two for hooking and one for elbowing. The penalties were spaced out over the period. The first at 4:41, the second at 10:43, and the final at 17:12. The Militia seem to be really good at players only getting one penalty this game.    (103)

Third Period:

The third period started off with a bang. The first penalty of the period came from the Armada at just 2:28 for hooking. It wasn't long after that Ravyn Tedisko came in to score the only goal of the period and last goal of the game. Her game winning murder shot came from the assists of Cadwadaler and Morris IV. The Militias goalie held fast with his shut out blocking all 19 shots the Armada threw his way. The defensive set up of this team was well thought out. It seemed as though the teams communication in this game was on a whole other level.    (106)
