Outlaws Anaheim @ St. Louis Scarecrows
SMJHL S47 Game 63

PREGAME:
Hey folks and welcome to tonight’s recap of the battle of the heavyweights coming to you from St. Louis. Both of these teams have been playing crisp hockey to start the season and look to continue to rack up the points here early. Anaheim has posted a 6-3-3 record on the back of Hiro Fujikawa’s hot goal scoring start, potting 8 in the first 12 games. Before last night’s loss to Vancouver, Anaheim recorded at least a point in 9 straight games. Quite the streak. St. Louis has started 7-4-1 and their scoring depth has been a focal point. Any line can score which makes them a dangerous team. They are currently on a 3 game win streak and both teams are looking to stay hot!
Starting Goalies for tonight:
Tibuk Soonika for Anaheim and Billy Sorokin for St. Louis.

FIRST PERIOD:
Anaheim wastes no time in getting an early lead. Martijn Westbroek hammers a shot from the point that Hiro Fuujikawa artfully redirects by Sorokin for his 9th goal of the season. Fujikawa continues to find the back of the net and looks like a man on a mission out there. That also marks Westbroek’s 10th helper this season. From here on out though, it’s all St. Louis. 6 minutes later Gaspard Boone rifles a wrister off the post but Noah Gallagher is there to clean up in front. Gallagher is a winger who can really make a difference with his net front presence due to his big frame. With a minute to go left in the 1st period, Boone makes no mistake this time and buries his 3rd of the season. Larry gets the primary assist on this goal which makes 2 for him this period. 11-10 shots this period in favor of St. Louis. Both teams look evenly matched right now.

FIRST
ANA 1 - 2 STL

SECOND PERIOD:
Tyler Tougard scores one minute into the second as he takes a blocked shot and puts it top shelf from the slot extending St. Louis’ lead to 2. Anaheim looks in disarray to start the period and things start getting chippy. Osbert Whacker gets sent off soon after St. Louis’ 3rd goal for roughing. St. Louis has a busy powerplay but can’t get anything by Soonika. At 7:06 of the 2nd, Filip Zadina gets on the board after another blocked shot finds its way directly to him in open space. Boomhover with the primary assist on this one. After giving up 4 goals through 1.5 periods of play, Anaheim’s coach has seen enough from Soonika to know it’s not his night. He brings in the backup Michal Burzawa to see if he can spark something from his team. Anaheim has looked completely dominated in this period so far, recording no shots. Charlie Serpe gets called for hooking at 10:47 but Anaheim can’t even get a shot off on the powerplay. Another penalty taken by Jerry Larry leads to a second Outlaws powerplay. Again, no shots. Abysmal special teams here as they look to claw themselves back in the game. St Louis has come out this second period and taken over. Anaheim can’t do anything offensively and is being stifled. The second period comes to a close with the Outlaws only recording 2 shots. This speaks volumes about St. Louis’ talented blue line core. The Scarecrows had 9 shots this period, 2 of which found the back of the net.

SECOND
ANA 1 - 4 STL

THIRD PERIOD:

Exactly like the first two periods, period 3 kicks off with a goal under 2 minutes in. Filip Zadina buries one from the right face-off circle and makes it 5-1. Boomhover gets the primary assist. That’s his 5thassist of the season and 2nd in this game. Jerry Larry gets called for another penalty and Anaheim go back on the powerplay. Anaheim manage to set up this time and rocket 2 shots from the point, but Sorokin brought his A game tonight and smothers both with no rebound. Another empty powerplay for the Outlaws. Filip Zadina complete his hat trick at 9:31 of the 3rd and this game has gotten out of hand. Anaheim look completely lost in the defensive zone and their defensive positioning has been suspect all game. Boomhover gets his 3rdassist on the night picking up the secondary assist on Zadina’s 3rd goal. The hats rain down from the stands and the crowd is loving it here in St. Louis. The final horn sounds and that ends this one-sided beat down. St. Louis is now 3-0 on the season vs the Outlaws and really seem to have their number here early in the season.

FINAL
ANA 1 - 6 STL

STARS OF THE GAME:

Third star from the St. Louis Scarecrows: Gordie Boomhover (3a)
Second star from the St. Louis Scarecrows: Gaspard Boone (1g, 1a)
First star from the St. Louis Scarecrows: Filip Zadina (3g)

Shot breakdown:  This game featured a total of 49 shots, 30 shots for the Crows and 19 for Anaheim.  The player with the most shots in this game was Anaheim’s Max Rockatansky, who fired 6 shots on Billy Sorokin.  That is 32% of Anaheim’s shot total, none of Max’s shots made it past the Crows keeper.  On the other side of the ice, the Crows third liner Nicolaj Muller matched Rockatansky’s shot total, which accounted for 20% of St. Louis’ shots.   There is one other players shot numbers that I want to call out, that’s Filip Zadina.  Zadina fired 4 shots on net (13% of the Crows shots), but what stands out is the fact the 3 of those 4 shots found their way past, that a 75% shooting percentage, Zadina’s shots tonight were crazy accurate, the Anaheim goalies are lucky that Zadina didn’t get the puck on his stick more often, the 6-1 final score could have been much worse.

Hat trick hero:  Let’s take a closer look at this games #1 star, St. Louis Scarecrow forward Filip Zadina.  Filip earned himself a hat trick in the game against Anaheim, we’re going to take a closer look at these three goals that helped the Crows cruise past Anaheim.  Zadina’s first goal came almost midway through the 2nd period, the Crows had a 3-1 lead at that point.  Crow defender Mattie Brunton ripped a shot on net that was stopped by Anaheim’s Tibuk Soonika, it was the last shot Soonika would stop in this game.   Soonika let a rebound go after Brunton’s shot, the next shot on net was blocked and Zadina then recovered the puck and fired it past the goalie, ended his night and Anaheim’s hope of a comeback.  Goal #2 had almost the same set up as his first, the Crows fired a flurry of 5 shots toward the net, all of which missed the net or were blocked, Zadina made no mistake with the 6th shot attempt in 15 seconds, making it 5-1.  The 3rd and final goal of Zadina’s night and the game, was also scored after Zadina recovered the puck after a blocked, that’s 3 goals scored by Zadina, all after being in the right place to find the puck after a blocked shot attempt, that’s some pretty solid offensive awareness by Zadina, this may not be his last hatty of the season!

Comment 3

Turning point: The turning point in tonight’s game came in the first half of the 2nd period.  It is when Filip Zadina scored his first of three goals.  Up until this point, the game was still in reach for the Outlaws.  An early goal at the start of the 2nd period had the Crows up 3-1, still in striking range for the Outlaws.  That fourth goal not only forced the Outlaws to make a goalie change, but also put the game out of reach for Anaheim. 2 more goals by the Crows winger Zadina, made the final 6-1 for the Crows.  If Anaheim’s goalie was able to turn aside Zadina’s attempt on net while the score was 3-1, the Outlaws still had the time left to battle back into this contest, but unfortunately that wasn’t in the cards for Anaheim tonight.

EVERYTHING BUT THE KITCHEN SINK

Seems like the Scarecrows mentality was just to put everything they had in them on net. Registering 30 shots, which was 11 more than their opposition had, the Scarecrows ended up burying 6 goals on two goaltenders. If you look even closer than that, the Outlaws had to face more of their wrath. The Outlaws layed their bodies on the line, registering 19 blocked shots as a team. Notably, Noah Tedla and Corey Kennedy has 5 each, leading their team on that night in shots blocked. The Scarecrows did some damage, forcing the Outlaws to use their bodies to stop pucks and also because the 'Crows registered a total of 23 hits, which was 9 more than their opponent. All in all, fingers point to a dominant performance by Saint Louis.

MISE-O-JEU

For those of you who do not know, Mise O jeu stands for faceoff in french. This was a surprising stat, as their were a total of 71 puck drops by the zebras tonight. The Scarecrows, who dominated the game in every possible aspect, only won 29 of them whereas the Outlaws took 42 of the pucks off of the drop. You would think this possession would have been put to good use by Anaheim, but unfortunately you can not win games by just winning faceoffs. Michael Fox and Boris Poroshenko both registered horrible ratings at the dot, with a 6/17 and 6/19 success rate respectively. Max Rockatansky showed up at the faceoff a total of 24 times and took the puck home on 15 of them. A shout out to Chuck Goody III for going 7/8.

MVP Alert!

Talk about shifting into overdrive, right? Filip Zadina put on an absolute clinic in this game, and was a one man wrecking crew against Anaheim. Zadina managed to tally one goal in the second that chased starting goalie Tibuk Soonika from the game, and then scored the only two goals of the third period against his replacement, Michal Burzawa. When the Outlaws back-up goal tender came into the game early in the second period, he had no idea what was in store for him. Even more impressive was that only one of Zadina's tallies came with the man advantage, meaning he played incredible well during even strength hockey. Considering he did this in just over fifteen minutes of ice time, the man is a true to life scoring machine.

But Do You Even Block, Bro?

One of the lone bright spots for a struggling Outlaws squad tonight was their tenacity on the defensive side of the puck. Don't look at me like that. I'm being dead serious. Yes, I understand that they gave up six goals in this one, and some of that blame does indeed go to the defense. The goalie can't stop 'em all, am I right? However, this Anaheim defensive unit managed to block an incredible nineteen (!!!) shots in this game. You read that correctly. It's not a typo. Nineteen. Now that's a perfect example of giving yourself up for the team. If this team can continue to put together performances like this, and get a little extra help from their goalies, they certainly seem to have a bright future ahead of them.
