Welcome to season in review, hosted by William Icardi. We are taking a look at random games during the season and analyzing them for you, the viewer, to read. Today we are taking a look towards the beginning of the season and looking at the game on the tenth day between the visiting Kelowna Knights and the Lethbridge Lions.

Coming into this game, the Knights had started off on a roll in the early season, collecting five wins and two losses as they entered the Lions Arena (idk what it’s called). Kelowna had gone on a four game winning streak before losing to Halifax and then smashed the St. Louis Scarecrows in a resounding 5-1 win over them. They were looking to handle the Lions easily and wanted to keep the momentum they had built.

The Lethbridge Lions had started the beginning of the season on a slower pace, their first five games saw them go 1-4, and not looking to hot but they were able to pick up two back to back wins against the Colorado Raptors and the Vancouver Whalers at the start of a three game home stand, giving them a sort of winning streak to start building on as they look towards facing the Knights at home as they sit with a 3-4 overall standing.

---First Period---

The game starts off in a hotly contested match as both teams try to find their game speed, testing each of the goalies to see who would crack first, and remained this way until in the third minute, Kelowna player Piotr Horvat picked up a slashing minor, giving the Lions a chance to take an early lead, which the Lions would be able to capitalize on after a minute on the power play, Lions player Austin Roenick sniped the puck past Kelowna goaltender Alexander Andersson-Grande after receiving a pass from Donny McMasters. Jules L’Eclair also assisted on the goal, giving the Lions an early 1-0 lead.

Kelowna needed a response badly so they wouldn’t lose complete control of the game, and they tried as they put a couple pucks on net but nothing could get past Lion’s goalie Patrice Nadeau. Lions would get the puck back in their zone and make way to the Knight’s zone, putting pucks on net as Dickens Makeout-King smashed a puck against the Knight’s goalie, and after a rebound control sent it back to him his second shot got the puck into the back of the net, giving the Lions a 2-0 lead. Dickens got his first goal of the season and was assisted by Thomas Bathory and Asene Arsenich.

With only ten minutes left in the period, the Knights were starting to fumble around with the puck and making bad passes, even though they were able to get into the Lion’s zone and put pucks on net, they were not anything the Lions goaltender couldn’t handle. Almost three minutes later, Lions Gordon Bombay snapped his first goal of the season, with the assist from Dinars Briedis and Dickens Makeout-King. This gave the Lions a commanding 3-0 leading and it was still only the first period.

The Knights tried to respond by laying on the body, hitting player after player just trying to get control of the puck and do something with it but it was to no avail. After a shot by Liam Hutchinson was stopped by Patrice Nadeau and was held for a face off. Jules L’Eclair won the face off and the Lions worked their way up the ice when Cant Eykhil slapped a shot onto the goal, which missed but thanks to the work of Eva Lykke Aparjode and Jules L’Eclair he was able to send another puck on net which went in, giving the Lions 4-0 lead with only four minutes left in the first. A little over a minute later, Jay Boom’Boom of the Lions collected a roughing penalty which gave a little life to the Knights but they were not able to get a goal back even though they sent 6 pucks on goal. Patrice Nadeau stood on his head and the Lions went into the locker room with their lead. The Shot count favored Kelowna by one, 10-9.

--Second Period--

The Knights had plenty of time to get back into the game all they needed was one goal to get them started, but the second period was an absolutely weird period for both teams. No goals were scored during the period, and the shot count was only 4-4 for each team even though there was plenty of shot attempts, just too many misses. The Knights had four really good opportunities as the Lions picked up penalties halfway through the 4th minute, the eleventh minute, and back to back penalties in the seventeenth minute. The Knights never got the goal they so desperately needed and the period ended with the Lions holding on to their 4-0 lead.

--Third Period--

The third period started off with a bang as Kelowna finally got a goal they needed just after twelve seconds in the period, Knight David Vent slapped the puck past Patrice Nadeau, the assists going to Karlstrabe Scholz and Aleksandr Scherbak. Nearly forty seconds later, Karlstrabe picked up a holding penalty after almost a minute in to the third. The Lions were not able to get the power play goal but they controlled the play as they continued to shoot pucks on goal, but none of them were getting past until almost the fourth minute when Austin Roenick got his second of the game, assisted by Jules L’Eclair and Eva Lykke Aparjode. The Lions sat comfortably with a 5-1 lead as the Knights kept a back and forth game with the Lions.

In the ninth minute, Lion Mister McCarty picked up a roughing minor and the Knights really pressed down on the pedal to try and get a goal, and thanks to Jason Bergenty they were able to get a power play goal near the end of the power play. David Vent and Liam Hutchinson assisted on the goal. The Knights still needed to get more goals and they were running out of time as the Lions were leading, 5-2.

While the Knights had a chance when Lion player Tah Puhcheese picked up a holding penalty in the thirteenth minute, they were not able to score on the power play, but a minute after it ended Vadim Malichov scored for the Knights, assisted by Karlstrabe Scholz and Gunnar Soderberg. This brought the game to a 5-3 lead for the Lions, and it wound up being the final score as the Lions held on to win and secure a 3 game winning streak at home.

The total shot count was very close with the difference going the way to Lethbridge, 22 to Kelowna’s 21. Patrice Nadeau had stopped 18 out of 21 shots on goal for a .857% save percentage while Kelowna goaltender Alexander Andersson-Grande stopped 17 out of 22 for a rough .773% save percentage. Of course all three stars wound up going towards the Lions as they dominated the game early and stayed in control mostly.

First Star – Dickens Makeout-King (1g, 1a, 2p)

Dream Start for Lethbridge, Disaster for Kelowna

We can look at the first period from both sides. For Lethbridge, it was an incredible start to the game. They were able to get on the board early thanks for a power play goal by Austin Roenick and then a flurry of goals by Dickens Makeout-King, Gordon Bombay and Cant Eykhil saw them extend their lead. On the other hand, it couldn’t have gone worse for the Kelowna Knights if they tried. A penalty from Piotr Horvat for slashing was just the beginning as the Lions were able to capitalize. Even though the Knights were able to get 10 shots off and out shoot the Lions in the first, their defensive game was nowhere to be seen. Total domination by Lethbridge in the first period.

Three Stars of the Game

All three stars came from the Lethbridge Lions. The first star, Dickens Makeout-King, scored the second goal of the game on his only shot and was a secondary assist on the third goal. He finished with 3 hits in 17 minutes of time. The second star, Jules L’Eclair, was exceptional with 3 assists, two of them coming in the first period and one in the third. In just over 16 minutes of ice time, he finished with a +2 and 3 shots on net. The third star, Austin Roenick, had 2 goals on 3 shots, the first being the opening goal of the game and the second being in the third which put the game to bed. The Lions were able to capitalize on every line giving them offensive support.

Penalty Kill the Difference

After taking only 1 penalty in the first period, the Lethbridge Lions saw themselves on the penalty kill 3 times in the second period as well as a 5on3 towards the later stages of the period. The Lions penalty kill was able to kill of all those penalties. Thomas Bathory played a huge part in the Lions PK success as he played almost 6 minutes on the PK for the game. Kelowna finished 3/4 on the PK for 75% and the Lethbridge finished 7/8 on the PK for 87.5%. When teams continue to get penalties, the penalty kill has to step up and protect the lead and that’s exactly what they able to do today for the Lions.
