S47 Four Star Cup Finals Game 2: ANA @ MTL
#16

Thank you for joining us again. We’re back, early in the second period.

Padraig Sarantez has the takeaway off of the errant pass by Osbert Whacker within his own zone.

A drop pass to Herry Morris IV gives him the space for a long winding toe drag leading into a snapshot.

Deflected in front by Griffith Cadwalader, and the puck tips wide of the cage, and of the grip of Soonika. The deflection wobbles wide.

Played behind the net, Keegan Angello is the first to the loose puck.

Angello hits his edge like he’s going for a wraparound, but gives a no-look backhand pass to the side of the net that he’s not going to!

Soonika pushes off of his post, just before the pass has made it to Cadwalader. Tibuk extends the blocker, but the one-timer wobbles in just below the outstretched arm. Cadwalader has tied the game at Two!

Final minute in the second period and we have a stoppage for off-sides after Slap McShotty couldn’t stay onsides in order to receive Kennedy’s pass. Anaheim lines up with their fourth line, Chuck Goody III, Seemu Telanne, and Dylon McIntyre; Montreal matches with their third, Angello, Cadwalader, and Morris IV. Angello wins the faceoff back to Cadwalader who is immediately pressured back into his own zone by Telanne.

A little trickery inside of his own blue line and Cadwalader is free of Telanne and headed back towards the neutral zone.

Oh my! Dylon McIntyre has leveled Griffith Cadwalader! A full sprint through two zones, and then 15 feet of gliding to line a beautiful shoulder-to-chest body check! Objectively clean, and would only be considered a charge by some unobjective homer.

The puck continued on to Morris IV, but none of the players are reacting because everyone can see how clean of a hit it was.
Perhaps this was an act of retribution for a previous goal, or the Outlaws frustration of only getting one shot on net this period.

After 40 minutes of play, we take our second intermission. The score is 2-2, and these teams are virtually tied statistically as well, the only inconsistency being Anaheim being held to 1 shot that period, and it is reflected in the game’s momentum.

Contributing to his team’s effort is the Militia’s James Truong. We go to him in the tunnels now.

James, you and centerman Marc Hagan will both be playing together in Edmonton next season, how has the off-ice chemistry contributed to this cup run?

TRUONG: I’d like to get back and rest. I only have an endurance of 61, so this downtime is important for me, as I imagine it will be next year as well.

James, you’ve played well all series. Your effort is undeniable. This is likely your last season in the league before you get called up. How much has that played a factor for you personally?”

TRUONG: Not too much. It’s a great team with a lot of depth. Our minds are on the next shift and getting pucks deep.

That was a good generic answer. We’ll let you go. Thank you for your time, James. We’ll be back with the third period after this break.

Our action picks up early in the third. The Outlaws have possessed the puck seemingly the entire minute and a half so far. Not too much shooting, but taking the Militia out of it and controlling the pace is what will get them this W. Alternate Captain Yoshumitsu McCloud passes to Nick Connolly, who has a look…

He doesn’t take it. He drops the puck to Slap McShotty who dekes through the offensive zone to the high danger area.

He’s pressured from behind by Zarley Zalapski.

McShotty leaves the puck off for Kirsters Dzelme who takes two strides and a wrist shot on a vulnerable Aleksi O’Koivu-Volkova, screened by McShotty.

It goes in!
The Outlaws have taken the lead again! The score is 3-2!

What is this?

Aleksi is pleading his case to the referee. Also getting an earful from the Militia faithful and bench.

The referees convene before eventually sending the head linesman to go under the hood and review the call. From what we can tell in the booth, Aleksi is aguing that McShotty interfered with him, and the replay certainly fits the narrative.

The head umpire skates back to center ice for the address and is waiting for the crowd to simmer.

“After review, the offensive payer interfered with the goaltender. The goal is waved off. A 2-minute minor will be assessed to McShotty.”

Wow. The first penalty of the game and what an impact. After a brutal first game, both teams have come back with a heavy hitting, but clean effort, and this minor certainly shakes things up.

On the ice for Montreal’s power play are Hagan, Angello, Truong, Shepard, and Johnson.
Hagan enters the zone and circles around deep, giving his teammates time to set up. Keegan Angello sets up in front of the net as the puck moves to Commander Shepard, who pulls back and releases a slap shot.

Angello reaches out to deflect it but misses. The puck slams into the glass, it’s missed the net.

Played by Hagan behind the net, he circles back around and waits for a screen to develop by Angello.

Hagan fires a wrist shot.

Soonika has a read on it.

Angello swats at the puck, knocking it down.

It skitters past Soonika into the net!

Goal! McShotty slams his stick into the inside of the penalty box. A 2 goal swing, the score is now 3 - 2 Militia, and all of the momentum lies with the hometown Militia.

Fourteen minutes into the third period and the Outlaws have shown that they are not out yet. Montreal’s Zarley Zalapski and Anaheim’s Slap McShotty are jawing at each other from opposing penalty boxes as we play some four-on-four. Anaheim lines up Westbroek, Fujikawa, Seger, and Kennedy. Montreal plays Hagan, Truong, Klozoff, and Skottson.

Montreal Zone faceoff, won by Westbroek back to Fujikawa. The Outlaws waste no time in setting up their four-man attack.

Puck Cycled to Kennedy, to Westbroek, back to Kennedy, over to Seger, and now everyone’s touched it.

Fujikawa breaks towards the middle and he’s beaten his man.

Seger makes the read and delivers a tape to tape pass.

Hiro receives the puck and glides past Aleksi.

He fakes five-hole, and Aleksi buckles. Hiro wrists one around the leg of O’Koivu-Volkova! It’s a good goal! They can’t take this one off the board. The score is tied 3-3 with just over five minutes to play.

It’s the final minute of regulation, and the game is tied 3-3.

Anaheim pulls their top forwards off the ice and sends out their four’s, Goody III, Telanne, and McIntyre, guided by the team leading pairing; Seger and Kennedy. It looks like this one is going to go to overtime and more hockey is just what we’re in the mood for after this barn burner.

Zarley Zalapski retrieves the puck behind his own net and looks to the bench. His teammates are skating passively towards the bench.

He takes a few hard strides to clear the zone, he’s just looking to dump it in.

He’s not going to make it, the fresh legs of the Outlaws’ fourth line are upon him.

He moves to chip out of the zone but the puck is batted out of the air by Seemu Telanne!

Zalapski recoils and starts to backpedal, barely keeping pace with Telanne. He takes him wide, but Chuck Goody III has entered the zone unhindered and is streaking down the opposite pipe.

Telanne snaps a centering pass to Goody III.

The Militia skaters are unable to get back and Goody III has an open shot on net!

He wrists a one-timer.

he beats Aleksi short-side!
Goal! Goal! Goal! In under 7 minutes of ice-time, Chuck has notched what could be the game-winning goal!
Outlaws take the lead in the final minute 4-3.

After the fanfare has died down, Montreal has sent out their last minute offensive unit. The net is not empty yet, and the seats have remained full. These fans have seen their team come back from worse. And they’ve paid for a four-star cup ticket, they might as well soak it all in. Cadwalader is dismissed from the faceoff circle, replaced by Johnson.

Faceoff won on back to Gibbles who is pressured immediately by Herry Morris IV. He moves the puck to Seger and then Westbroek as they gain the offensive zone.

Puck back to Gibbles who elevates one over an outstretched Skottson.

He hits the pipe!

And the clock continues to wind down. The ping resonates throughout the arena as fans begin to egress.

Olover Klozoff scoops up the puck for a last minute offensive. He’s feeling overtime and pushes the puck accordingly. As the Militia enter the zone, O’Koivu-Volkova sprints to the bench for the extra skater.

Klozoff attempts to play the puck around the boards, but it is picked up Corey Kennedy. Corey chips the puck to Westbroek who moves it along to Gibbles. Back to Kennedy as they enter the zone. Johnson gets low to deter the shot, but Kennedy wrists it over and into the unguarded net. Congratulations to the Anaheim Outlaws and whoever bet the puck-line.
