vs

OutlawsOUTLAWSOutlaws

The week five matchup featuring the Knights and Outlaws was an exciting back and forth game which featured a sizeable amount of offense scored by both teams. This mid-season clash is important for both teams, as the SMJHL is typically tight in terms of the point race, and both teams obviously want a much needed and desired two points. Ultimately, however, it would be the Knights who would come out on top victorious in this game.

First Period
The first period of the game was all Knights in terms of offense, as they were the only team to score a goal this period and they managed to secure two of them. The first of the Knights’ goals came quickly, fifty-three seconds to be exact, as Raquel Castillo Gutierrez scored his seventh goal of the season, giving the Knights to first and early lead of the game. The primary assist was awarded to Big Fudge, who earned his seventh assist on the season, while the secondary assist was given to Piotr Horvat, who earned his twelfth assist of the year. It didn’t take too much longer for the Knights to double their lead, however, as around five minutes later, Tah Puhcheese scored his fourth goal of the season, giving the Knights the early 2-0 lead. The primary assist was given to David Vent, who earned his impressive fourteenth assist of the campaign, while the other assist was given to Simon LeBlanc, who earned his eight assist of the season. The end of the period would come with an important 2-0 lead for the Knights who seemed to be in firm control early on.

Second Period
Out of all the periods of the game, this is the one that possessed the most offensive action, and truly made this a back and forth game between both teams. A little over a minute and a half into the period, the Outlaws cut the lead in half, when Corey Kennedy scored his sixth goal of the year to make the score only 2-1. The primary assist was given to Seemu Telanne, who earned his seventh assist, while Noah Tedla earned an impressive sixteenth assist of the season. Exactly four minutes later, the Outlaws would manage to tie the game at 2-2, when Lallo Selman scored his seventh goal of the season thanks to a direct assist from Max Rockatansky, his sixth assist of the year and the only assist awarded on the goal. A little less than six minutes later, the Outlaws actually managed to take their first lead of the game at 3-2, thanks to a goal from Gunnar Petrov, who scored his ninth of the goal of the season, with the sole assist going to Corey Kennedy, who earned a whopping eighteenth assist on the year and his second point of the game. However, this 3-2 lead for the Outlaws would not stand, as the Knights would end up re-taking a 4-3 lead on the power-play at around the 13th minute of the period thanks to a goal from Big Fudge, who would score his seventh goal of the season and his second point of the game. The two assists were awarded to Jack Icicle who earned his second of the season, while the other one went to Josef Novotny, earning his eleventh assist of the season. This would end the scoring for the period and the game entered the final period at a score of 3-3.

Third Period
The action in this period was the smallest compared to the other two, but the Knights goal scored a minute and a half into the period would be enough to ultimately give the Knights the victory. This goal scored by Aleksandr Scherbak, earning his sixth goal of the season, while the primary assist went to Gunnar Soderberg, who earned his ninth assist of the season. The secondary assist was ultimately granted to David Vent, who earned his 15th assist of the year. The buzzer would eventually ring for the final time and the Knights would win this game by a final score of 4-3.

1. Penalty Kill Excellence:
Both teams PK units were outstanding, the Knights were a perfect 4/4 while the Outlaws were 3/4. The Outlaws only gave up two shots on their first penalty kill, and that seemed to be a theme for the rest of the game as both teams limited the team on power play when it came to shots and overall chances. Both teams blocked two shots each on the penalty kill, and only gave up 12 shots total while down a man. While there was 7 goals total, it would have been a lot more if both teams weren't up to the challenge on the penalty kill.  (108 words)

2. Impact Defensemen
Both the Outlaws and the Knights have some high quality offensive defensemen and they were on display this game. On both of the Knights first 2 goals their defensemen had all 4 of the assists. Anaheim's Corey Kennedy widely considered as one of the best offensive defensemen in the SMJHL showed why he's rated so highly tonight. Kennedy scored his team's first goal, and assisted in his team's last goal. The Knight's defensemen Big Fudge tied the game at 3 all on the games only power play goal, and on the game winner top pair David Vent got the winning assist. The defensemen accounted for 7 combined assists and 2 total goals.  (111 words)

3. 3 Stars
Both of the top 2 stars were defense that logged a goal and an assist for their team. The first star of the game is Corey Kennedy from the Outlaws, Kennedy scored his team's first goal and assisted his team's final goal. The 2nd of the game is Big Fudge from the Kelowna Kinghts. Fudge assisted in the first goal of the game, and scored the game tying goal on the Power Play about half way through the second period. The 3rd star comes from Anaheim, right winger Gunnar Petrov. Petrov scored his 9th goal of the season eleven minutes into the 2nd period, which at the time gave the Outlaws the lead. (113 words)

1. Goalie Rundown

Let's take a moment to look back at the performance of our Starting Goaltenders in tonight's game.

Theo Hass of Kelowna walks away with the win in this one. Haas stopped twenty of the twenty three shots he faced tonight. While his . 870 save percentage won't necessarily turn any heads, he proved that he could perform when it counts and bring home the W for his team.

Blame it on a bit of sleepiness for Anaheims Patrick Niederreiter as he walks away from this one with a L after twin quick goals early in the third period. Niederreiter would bounce back and shut the door at even strength until the third period, but his offense couldn't bail him out of this one.

Code:
Theo Haas (KEL), 20 saves from 23 shots - (0.870), W, 2-2-0, 60:00 minutes
Patrick Niederreiter (ANA), 20 saves from 24 shots - (0.833), L, 1-3-0, 58:55 minutes

2. Ford Tough Aggressor of the Game

Tonight's Ford Tough Aggressor of the Game was Anaheims Anthony Mann! This youngster came out with a chip on his shoulder, posting five hits throughout the contest. Mann also found himself in the penalty box on two occasions this afternoon, attempting to spark his team to turn things around. Sadly for him, his effort was not rewarded for a win tonight, but we can promise you that if he keeps up the same level of intensity he showed here, hell be rewarded very very soon.

3. Canadian Tire Unsung Hero of the Game

Now let's take a look at tonight's Canadian Tire Unsung Hero of the Game, presented by Titos Vodka. Titos! Just Vodka, gets you drunk.

Tonight's award goes to Kelownas Aleksandr Scherbak! Scherbak laid the body four times in an effort to grind out a win for the Knights. Even more impressive, Scherbak did as much while staying responsible; keeping himself out of the sin bin and available to help his squad. His gritty play was rewarded when he himself notched a goal, all but sealing this game for Kelowna.

COMMENT ONE - CLOSE GAME ENDS IN STYLE
This game was looking good, Kelowna had the huge lead in the first, Anaheim grabbed the lead in the second but Kelowna tied it up just over a minute after Anaheim took their lead, this game was good, every single period there was action, and the game ended in some flashy style. Scherbak, who hadn't been on the scoresheet all game notched the game-winner for Kelowna and he did it we've heard in flashy style, stunning the goalie and potting it when he needed to. Scherbak was 1 (goal) for 4 (shots) which isn't as impressive but as mentioned, he made this one count!

COMMENT TWO - ANAHEIM ALMOST SWEEPS "THREE STARS" IN LOSS
So I've said it before, I'm sure in one of these other PGS' but this always makes me laugh, however when someone has a good game, I suppose they have a good game and should in theory get some credit for it. Anaheim has Kennedy (1G, 1A) and Petrov (1G) take the two of the three stars, now something to make note of here is that guys like Vent, and pretty much a good chunk of the Knights had either a multi-point night or at least a one goal night, and were left off the star sheet. So what made Petrov stand out with his one goal? I'll be honest, I am not sure, his shooting percentage was only 25%, he was negative on the night, so to me, there were many more stars to pick from, however in this case, it is what it is.

COMMENT THREE - NEITHER TEAM TRULY CAPITALIZED ON POWER PLAY ATTEMPTS
A big part of the game nowadays is the powerplay, its crucial for any team to make good with their powerplay and in this game, while one goal was scored by the Knights, neither team truly used their PP effectively, and that could've been a factor in the outcome here, both sides of the ice. In one case, we have a combined eight penalties, actually tied four a piece across the two teams, as mentioned Kelowna scored once, and Anaheim struck out all four times. Now, the "what ifs" are all there, had they scored and taken the opportunites, would the outcome be different? Obviously, this is presumed to be the case, however it is worth noting that the teams were both very good on the PK, a reason WHY they were so dominant.

Biggest Goon  Outlaws

Alexander Mann leveraged all of his 185 lbs on the ice tonight. Coming in with five hits (the most of anyone out on the ice tonight by a large margin), Mann targeted Jack Icicle for most of 1st period with an early hit on Soderberg, then shifted over to a solid hit on “Big Fudge” in the second. Capping off the night where he began, Soderberg was reunited with Mann’s mass in the third. Three out of his five hits resulted in a loose puck, and if it wasn’t for his two penalties, one for hooking and the other for high-sticking, Mann probably would have caused a few more loose pucks out on the ice.

Handy Andy Award  Knights
David Vent earned the “Handy Andy” award tonight with his two assists, two shots, and two points in for the game. Earning his two assists in the first and third period respectively, Vent came out to play, and play he did. More in a supporting role for tonight, Vent was able to steady himself against the barrage of checks that the outlaws sent for him, two of which happened within seconds of each other in the 10th minute of the second period. Along with his assists, Vent blocked a shot in the third, and layed out a couple shots during tonight’s festivities. Taking this into account Vent proved why he isn’t a burden out on the ice.

Knight’s of the Round Table  Knights
Knight’s fans should be thankful from one thing after tonight’s showing. That their special teams look to be in an alright place for the time being. The Knight’s penalty kill unit performed admirably out there on the ice. With both teams clocking in ten penalty minutes, it was the Knight’s successful 100% penalty kill that really saved them during such a close game. That’s not to diminish the Knight’s Power Play unit either. Scoring in the second, Big Fudge was able to score after Banthony’s Roughing (Minor) penalty. However, the ability to shut down Anaheim’s Power Play, or just cause enough chaos from having it gain enough momentum, shouldn’t be understated. Both team’s special teams saw enough action tonight, and both deserve our respect for the game they played.
