Game 116 Anchorage Armada vs Montreal Militia
#1

http://simulationhockey.com/games/smjhl/...L-116.html

This game between the Anchorage Armada and the Montreal Militia was one of the worst games to watch for people that were seeking offense as there was a total 39 shots in this games and it went all way to a shootout, where only one person scored on 8 breakaways, there was no fights, it was a goaltender battle and honestly there really isn't much to talk about in this post game show, probably one of the reasons why this game did not get claimed right away.

The three stars of this game were:

1)Peter Larson , 21 saves, got a shutout and was a big reason why Anchorage was able to win this game, in this gritty defensive game between these two teams.

2)Aleksi O'Koivu-Volkova, the other goalie, played hard, was solid for Montreal, they just needed some offense to win this game, without him they probably dont even get a point.

3)Kristoffer Svensson, I know this is weird to pick a guy on the losing team to be the third star and not the guy who scored the Game winning goal in the shootout in Spencer MacLean but he won 26/39 draws in the face-off circle, he took39 draws and honestly that was the most impressive stat in my eyes in this game, this guy game and won a lot of puck battles for his team and he tried his best, he might not have done anything on offense but he worked hard and thats all it matters :3

One area of the game that needs to be called on for the Anchorage Armada in this victory is the fact they went 0 for 6 on the power-play, they don't deserve to win this game but montreal's offense as a ghost and maybe that was because they took so many penalties in this game that shot themselves into the foot. They couldn't get anything going offensively because they were off to the sin bin 6 times in a 60 minute game, they spent 12 minutes of the ame shorthanded which is just embarrassing in my books.

Another player that deserves to called out for their efforts is the unsung hero of the game in Tony Ford 24 minutes of solid defensive hockey, 1 shot, 2 hits and 2 shots blocked, he came with his work boots on and was a big reason why Montreal couldn't get anything going offensively.

First Star Peter Larson
In the battle of defense, the Armada's own Peter Larson was able to withstand the Militia's onslaught and inch out their goalie, Aleksi O'Koivu-Volkova, to secure the win for Anchorage. Larson earned the first sar tonight, as he was ultimately the deciding factor for tonight's game. With 21 saves, Larson withstood the Militia all the way to the shootout. Now, I am hesitant to say how much harder of a game Larson had over O'Koivu-Volkova. With the Militia's time in the penalty box doubling the Armada's, its safe to assume that Anchorage felt less offensive pressure throughout the game. However with 21 stops, he did make more saves than O'Koivu-Volkova. This latest win turned his record to 8 wins and 8 losses. Here's to more.

Unsung Heroes: the Minutemen
Montreal's penalty kill was on fire tonight. In a game as close as this one, one would assume fairly even stats across the bored, and they would be right. Fairly even shot totals, two goalies that were on their game tonight, but when you look at the PIM, we see the Militia doubling the Armada. Now we can talk all day about the lack of discipline on the team and why there were so many hooking calls, but the "Minutemen," as I have now dubbed them, had a 100% penalty kill. Hell, if it wasn't for them, then this game wouldn't have gone to shootout.

Battle of the Nets
Tonight's showing can only be described in one phrase. A Strength of Character. With such a defensive outing from these two goalies, fans were at the edge of their seat in this low scoring affair. The Penalties maintained their interest, with both teams fending off the other's power plays. Larson had arguably an easier time of it than  O'Koivu-Volkova, but that didn't last for long. Soon both would have to deal with the tension of overtime. Their resolve was deep, however, and neither budge. An ever standing wall. The overtime say Larson stopping three versus  O'Koivu-Volkova's 2. However, the turning point came in the shootout for obvious reasons. One man, Spencer MacLean, made a difference. the lead up to the goal was intense. Both sides had maintained the sum-nothing tie, but MacLean aimed to change that. MacLean slowly glided towards the goal, leading O'Koivu-Volkova to a shot off his left. mere feet from the goal, MacLean began a quick shuffle back and forth, putting O'Koivu-Volkova in his feet. With a magnificent fake out, O'Koivu-Volkova was put on the wrong side. Horn Sounds, and Anchorage scores. Tie was broken, and Larson goes onto secure the win with another stop next round.

Comment 1: Three stars of the game

Tonight was obviously a hard night to pick between three stars with the bare minimum of a score took place. As the Armada took a 1 - 0 victory in this game, Joe Kerr of the Anchorage Armada got the third star. Joe Kerr was laying players for the Militia out all night, with four huge hits on 20 minutes of ice time and 5 minutes of powerplay time. As well he had a 100% faceoff rate! But he only took one faceoff. Aleksi O'Koivu-Volkova took the second star for the Militia as he gets a technical shutout in tonight's game. He stopped every shot tonight including two stops in the shootout. And based off that, the first start of the night is Armada goaltender Peter Larson with another shutout. Larson stopped all 21 shots he faced, as well as all four shots in the shootout to win his team the game. This remarkable performance brought him up to a 50% win rate at 8 wins/8 losses.

Comment 2: Anchorage lucks out of their powerplay

The Armada faced not one.. not two.. not five.. but six powerplay opportunities tonight and could not finish on any of them. Joe Kerr has been one of their best wingers offensively, yet is finding himself on the second powerplay squad, however is receiving some of the highest powerplay time on the team? Perhaps the coach should be considering starting him from the get go with their other top powerplay scorers to finally get one past the goalie. It's also a wonder that they can't setup anything, yet they don't have a solid playmaking forward jumping in on the powerplay. Maybe something to consider in their next draft.

Comment 3: Shootout in Montreal!

Neither team could score on tonight's game between the Montreal Militia and Anchorage Armada after 65 minutes so we head to a shootout. Up first for the the Armada is Olivier Cloutier, their star French forward. Cloutier slows down, rips a quick snapper to catch the goalie off guard and it goes wide, barely missing the net. Next up for the Armada is their female star forward, from the Czech Republic, Ravyn Tedisko. Tedisko comes in with speed, fakes the shot, dekes left for the backhand and pad save by Larson. Second shooter for the Armada, notable goal scorer, Jake Primeau. Skates in close, fakes, waits, waits.. and stopped by O'Koivu Volkova. The Militia go with Jaguar Johnson for their second shooter.. a solid sniper for them this year, skates in with speed, and rips a big slapshot headed top corner but a fabulous glove save by Larson! Next up, Jonas Larsen, no relation to goaltender Peter Larson.. he comes way wide, crossing over and crossing over building up speed.. through the crease and Volkova seals the five hole as it almost sneaks through! Kristoffer Svensson will shoot for the militia now. He tries to keep it simple as he skates in and tries to fire one past the blocker side of Larson but he's ready for it. Classic snapshot. Can anyone score here? Stepping up to the plate for the Armada is Spencer MacLean, their 6'3 210 lb center and his speed shows it, taking a while to accelerate but now he's moving.. in on goal deke left- then right- then left again, Volkova is sprawled out sliding right and oh my, MacLean trickles it in to the net off the backhand and just like that the Armada are up in the shootout, a save here from Larson would win it. They put veteran Henry Morris IV out, 6'11 220 lbs and boy is he slow but he sure uses that weight to flex that stick and rips one! Off the goal post, and the Armada win this one in a shootout.

A Goalies Secret Weapon?

Following an amazing game from Peter Larson, the Anchorage Armada pulled out a shootout win over the Montreal Militia. After making 21 saves in regulation, Larson snatched the win in the fourth round of the shootout. After the game, Larson told the press the secret to his success for this game -

"Really it all comes down to pre-game meals. There's a great little Mexican food place that we went to for lunch today. I ordered the ghost pepper chicken fajitas, and holy hell were they spicy! My stomach has been hell since I ate them, but every time I farted while I was out there it gave me a little speed boost to push from side to side."

With the secret to his success laid out, one wonders if we'll see repeat performances against the Armada.

Fan Appreciation Night

As the Montreal Militia visited the Anchorage Armada, the fans of the Armada were treated to fan appreciation night. What a hell of a game they got, too!

After being out shot 12 to 4 in the first period, the Armada came out firing. They held true to the cannon bobble head they gave out to fans, outshooting Montreal in both the second and third periods.

Spencer MacLean, who scored the shootout goal to seal the victory, said "Knowing the fans were here to see some serious cannon fire tonight, we couldn't let them down. We were fired up after the first and ignited like gunpowder. We're really glad we could give them a victory in the shootout!"

Faceoff Fallacies

Kristoffer Svensson won a stunning 26 out of 39 faceoffs tonight. He won 10 more faceoffs than any center on Anchorage. When asked after the game about his impressive win percentage, he was quoted as saying -

"Yeah, sure, I won a bunch. But none of them lead to a point. We lost in the shootout, 1 to 0. What good is winning the majority of your draws if you and your team can't net any goals off of it? Anchorage had our number tonight. There's nothing we can do but move on and prepare for the next game. Good game, Anchorage, and congrats to the fans for a fan appreciation night win."
