S49 Draft Preview: Halfway Through

Hello hockey fans and amateur scouts! Another week has flown by, which means it's time for another installment of the S49 Draft Preview! The big news this week was the SMJHL Trade Deadline, which we all know is also the deadline to declare for next season's SHL draft. As that deadline passed last Friday, we have our final roster of players who will be eligible for the SHL in S49!

On our board, we've seen some interesting developments over the past week. The most exciting news was the development of a new tier at the top of the board. We've also seen the rapid development of a number of prospects, including the highest TPE gain over the course of one week to date.

Let's get into this week's edition of the S49 Draft Preview!

CENTERS

Last week we focused most of our time on the rise of Colorado's Bo Kane. What was once thought of as a weak, but quality, draft pool had begun to lose actives, and he was a bright spot showcasing there was talent available down the middle this season.

Kane has managed to keep up the pace this week, and remains not only at the top of our centers prospect board, but sharing the #1 overall prospect position for the S49 Draft. Kane currently sits with a respectable 16 points over 44 games.

We have a new skater taking the second best center spot in our current rankings. Last week we told you to keep an eye on Vancouvers Jan Zacha. Zacha sat just outside of the top three, but he had one of the highest TPE gains of all rookies and had a good chance of entering the upper echelon of centers in this draft. Well we at Draft Preview are ecstatic to report that Zacha sits in sole possession of the #2 Center spot with 247 TPE, a whopping 21 TPE increase since last week. Zacha has also shown improvement on the ice, increasing his point total to 10. Although it is questionable whether he is able to compete with Kane at this late stage of the season, he has vaulted into the upper tiers of our draft board and can be considered easily a mid first round pick in S49.

Centers Skao Anazibf and Jake Primeau now sit at #3 and #4 respectively, each earning a solid 9 TPE since last week.

The last remaining active center in this year's draft is also one of our most exciting prospects, Jakub Bruchevski. Bruchevski has continued his incredible efforts, tacking on an additional 15 TPE this week to move up our center rankings to #6. With nearly 40 TPE separating him from #4, it is unlikely he will pass another active player before the S49 Draft, but we are very impressed by his progress and expect him to succeed at the SHL level as a late second round selection.

Center Rankings as of 7/8/19 (TPE change noted)
C - Bo Kane - 268 TPE (+15)
C - Jan Zacha - 247 TPE (+21)
C - Skao Anazibf - 246 TPE (+9)
C - Jake Primeau - 238 TPE (+9)
C - Connor Tanner - 217 TPE (+0)
C - Jakub Bruchevski - 196 TPE (+15)
C - Mike Richard - 194 TPE (+0)
C - Gotta Love Honors Bio - 193 TPE (+0)
C - Jared Lammi - 158 TPE (+0)
C - Daniel Gonzalez - 155 TPE (+0)

WINGERS

Last week we stressed uncertainty at who would end up at the top of our winger rankings this season. However, our problem at Draft Preview is the SHL GMs lucky break, as the amount of talent available at this position is too strong to ignore and will provide teams an exceptional number of strong players to choose from. Our rankings week to week have seen the most change at this position, and this week is no different.

At the top of the rankings and sharing the #1 overall prospect designation with Bo Kane is Anchorage's Elijah Jones. Jones has not lost his grip on his first overall ranking since we began the preview, and has followed up his performance with 15 TPE earned this week. Jones is becoming known as a clutch player in the juniors, with three game winning goals to his name over 45 games played. We at Draft Preview have been high on this prospect for awhile, and do not expect him to give up his hold on the #1 spot.

Anthony Archer maintains his position as the #2 wing prospect and #3 on our overall draft board with 260 TPE. Currently a solid 8 TPE off the lead spot, and considering the development of our top two prospects, we do not expect Archer to put himself back in the running for first overall. However, Archer still remains a top tier talent and a lock in the top 5. Archer currently sits at 17 points over 45 games and has been a top contributor to Anaheim as the Outlaws sit in second place.

The biggest development this week comes at the #3 spot, as right aligned Cody has found separation from the pack and is now challenging Archer with 258 TPE, an 18 point increase over last week. We wondered last week who would rise up between Cody and Hugh Jazz, but Cody blew us out of the water and completely changed the landscape of our overall prospect board. Cody is one of the strongest prospects on ice, as he sports 27 points on a Halifax team that has struggled mighty down the stretch. Raiders fans hope that Cody can be the spark that turns his team around once the postseason hits.

The top tier of winger prospects rounds out with Montreal's Hugh Jazz at 246 TPE and Halifax's Ricky Spanish at 245 TPE. Last week we discussed that Jazz has not only been the best rookie this season in the SMJHL in terms of production, but is carrying the Montreal Militia kicking and screaming into the postseason. Jazz has 37 points in 45 games, is a near lock for Rookie of the Year, and could find his way into the MVP conversation if he keeps up his pace of play. We first mentioned Spanish last week in our overall board discussion, as he was the clear break between the second and third highest tiers of prospects. An increase of 9 TPE doesn't turn heads this week, but pushes him into sole possession of #5 on our Winger prospect rankings.

One player caught our attention this week for all the wrong reasons, and that's Jagger Fouquette. Fouquette had been keeping pace with Cody and Jazz as early as last week, but he has failed to demonstrate any development over the past week, leaving scouts concerned about his future dedication to his game. We have a true bounce back week from any prospect thus far, but if anyone can do it, it's Jagger Fouquette.

As we move down our winger prospect board, we see that Khabib Nurmagomedov barely eeked past Raquel Castillo Gutierrez this week after a 15 TPE gain. One of last week's success stories, Artem Mozgov, continued to skyrocket up our board with an astronomical 21 TPE gain this week. Finally, RW Jastik Janorksson, who we predicted to continue to rise after his decision to declare late this season, proved us right as he added 17 TPE to his totals.

We also have a newcomer to the winger corps, with Jean Paul Bolvin lacing up for the Vancouver Whalers over the past twelve games. Bolvin has already accumulated 170 TPE and will provide teams a late round option as he continues to develop with a squad known for keeping their players active. We look forward to his development as the season progresses.

DEFENSEMEN

Last week we told you that we saw solid, but not exceptional, improvement amongst the defensemen in this class. We hoped that some skaters would begin to make significant strides and shake up these rankings. We have seen some players bust out of the woodwork this week, but they have come from very unexpected places.

Remaining at the top of our defensemen prospect board is Noah Brusky with 252 TPE. Brusky followed up a strong 12 TPE gain last week with an even better 15 TPE gain this week. He has also further distanced himself from the pack of defensive prospects, increasing his TPE lead to 13 this week. Players like Brusky are why St. Louis finds themselves in first place with seven games remaining in the regular season. Brusky has 16 points in 45 games and shows no signs of slowing down. Brusky is clearly the best Defenseman in the S49 Draft.

Despite close TPE totals, not one skater in the pack of Defenseman from spots 2-6 made rocked our board this week. Defensemen Noah Andros, Delver Fudgeson, Derek Bohne Jr., and Prince Devitt all gained 9 TPE this week, while #6 Heat Siecker took 5.

One player who has our scouts worried this week is Gavin Hughes. Hughes was trailing the main pack of prospects as late as last week, but was poised to get some attention in the lead up to the draft. However, we've failed to note any development this week, and are concerned with his long term prospects in the SHL. We hope to see Hughes continue to make strides before this season comes to a close.

We need to discuss two prospects who, if you don't know of now, you should going into this seasons draft.

Last week we highlighted Mikas Bieksa as a late bloomer who could keep up with the best Defensemen in this draft. Well we aren't saying maybe anymore, Bieksa claimed 15 TPE this week to place himself just one TPE behind Siecker at 223. Expect Bieksa to establish himself as a top 5 defensive prospect before the S49 Draft.

We at Draft Preview have never seen a player do what FR Finn Rhys did this past week. Two weeks ago, this player found himself in the basement, failing to make a name for himself compared to the likes of Arthur Dayne and Jimmy Van John's. Last week, we gave our Player to Watch award to Finn Rhys, telling our readers to expect big things from this youngster.

If you want to see how a superstar is born, look at the past couple of weeks for Finn Rhys. He added 44, that's not a typo, 44 TPE this past week, increasing his TPE total to 222. Thats 72 TPE over the course of two weeks. We have never seen such rapid development in a prospect. While he sits 30 TPE out of the top TPE spot and is unlikely to challenge Brusky for #1 Defenseman, spots 2-7 are up for grabs and we cannot wait to see what this young man can accomplish before the draft. Do you believe in miracles? We at Draft Preview have been convinced by FR Finn Rhys.

We also have a newcomer to the defensive board this week in recent declaree Cal Clucker. Clucker has accumulated 19 TPE to push his totals to 174. We hope Clucker can follow in the footsteps of Janorksson and really impress us this week.

Defenseman Rankings as of 7/8/19 (TPE changes noted)
D - Noah Brusky - 252 TPE (+15)
D - Noah Andros - 239 TPE (+9)
D - Delver Fudgeson - 234 TPE (+9)
D - Derek Bohne Jr. - 233 TPE (+9)
D - Prince Devitt - 229 TPE (+9)

GOALIES

Last week we discussed the emergence of a true #1 Goalie prospect and the hopes that others would develop into solid grabs for teams in the later rounds.

The train keeps rolling for Knox Booth, whose 17 TPE gain this week leads all goalies and puts him comfortably atop our board with 243 TPE. Booth has transformed from a little known piece to #10 on our overall board, and will give SHL teams a solid choice if they choose to take a Goalie in the first round.

Our #2 Goalie prospect, Nolan McMahon, also put up a solid 9 TPE to bring his career total to 218. McMahon might not be able to climb to the heights we've seen Booth reach this season, but he is a project prospect that a team would be happy to take a chance on in the S49 Draft.

Our scouts share their concern with prospect Malcom Weekes. Weekes was keeping pace with McMahon as late as last week, but failed to show any development over the course of the past week. We hope to see Weekes gather himself and focus on getting better prior to the S49 Draft.

We have a new entry in the form of a Goalie. Marques Brownlee not only has a solid name, but a solid player, as he's reached 165 TPE in a very short time since declaring for the S49 SHL Draft. We look forward to what Brownlee can demonstrate on the ice.

Goalie Rankings as of 7/8/19 (TPE changes noted)
G - Knox Booth - 243 TPE (+17)
G - Noah McMahon - 218 TPE (+9)
G - Malcom Weekes - 208 TPE (+0)
G - Marques Brownlee - 165 TPE (+10)
G - Gritty Saosin - 158 TPE (+0)
G - Jeffrey Thompson - 155 TPE (+0)

CONCLUSION

As the deadline to declare for the S49 Draft has passed, we start to get a better idea of who is rising, who is falling, and who may surprise us as the day draws near. Although we've seen four players go inactive in the past week, we've had the pleasure of adding three new names to our class; each determined not to allow their late start to hinder their careers. With only a couple of weeks until draft day, we will see players scurry to accumulate as much TPE as possible. Additionally, with milestone claims just around the corner, we at Draft Preview are fully prepared to watch our mock get turned upside down, and we couldn't be happier about it.

Meanwhile, we still do not have a clear first overall. Kame and Jones remain in a dead heat for that spot, keeping them our obvious top two choices going into next week's edition.

We at Draft Preview decided, for the time being, to create a new tier just below these two studs with another two studs. While Archer has fallen away from the top, Cody has launched himself from the below, creating a two prospect pairing that, if the draft took place today, would create a clear choice at #3 and #4. We predict that, as the draft nears, this tier will disappear as either the Tier 3 prospects catch up, or one of these prospects make their way into the top tier. However, temporarily, we must make this distinction as these two are guaranteed to be at least #4 OA.

We've seen some changes in Tier 3 over the past week, most notably, the surge of Zacha to the top. Booth also gets the nod here after two solid weeks of TPE gain as the far and away best goaltender in this class.

Tier 4 looks very different from last week, with a number of inactives either falling into or falling out of this group. Fouquette has fallen into this tier after failing to update last week, and could continue to dive should he fail to show any development. On a brighter note, Nurmagonev has shown significant improvement over last week and finds himself climbing the ranks.

Tiers 5 and 6 are moving targets, with Bieksa, Finn Rhys, and Mozgov proving over the past two weeks that they should be considered strong prospects and are worthy of an earlier selection. Gavin Hughes, Conor Tanner, and Wyatt Ruschkoff find themselves dropping down the board after not updating, and could serve as the top of a Tier of mostly inactive prospects by our final rankings.

Tier 7 includes two very strong prospects in Janorksson and Bruchevski, who, but for the late start, would be higher on our rankings. Expect GMs to jump off the board to pick these two players up near the early third round.

With the exception of new entrants, Tier 8 is comprised wholly of inactives. We expect this tier to grow to have Sterling Slaughter at the top by the S49 Draft.

Week 3 Awards
Our Top Prospect award this week goes to Elijah Jones. Jones has consistently found himself at the top of our prospect board, and we expect GMs to take note of his consistency when it's time to make the first selection.

Our Most Dedicated award this week goes to the player who tied for second in this week's highest rise in the overall rankings, Jan Zacha. Typically, we see players struggle to rise once they reach the top pool of prospects simply because the margin for error is so thin. Zacha blew us out of the water this week with his incredible 6 spot gain into the #6 OA prospect slot.

Our skyrocket award goes to our top TPE earner and biggest change in the overall rankings, FR Finn Rhys. An unprecedented jump, Finn Rhys finds himself at #21 OA with no signs of slowing down.

Our Player to Watch award goes to another player who has slowly climbed the ranks, Artem Mozgov! We at Draft Preview may not have given this player enough praise in our previous iterations, but that doesn't mean he hasn't impressed us. Currently at 27th OA, Mozgov is quickly making a name for himself as a solid mid to late Second Round player, and his draft stock will only improve from here.

That's all we have for this week at the S49 Draft Preview. Next week we see the Playoffs begin, and with the chaos of a postseason we expect to see some chaos in our prospect pool. Tune in next week to find out what happens!
