Report: Frost Looking for a New Opportunity
#1

-Toronto, Canada

As first reported by the SHL Network’s own Elliotte Briedaman, former Colorado Raptors General Manger Sebastian Frost is reportedly looking to get back into the league in some capacity after spending a year away from the SHL and SMJHL as the host of the popular lunchtime talk show, SHL Central at Noon. It was first reported by league sources that Frost’s agent was sending out feelers to gauge interest around the league in possibly bringing back the American in a role similar to that which he held as General Manager and President of Hockey Operations with the Colorado Raptors. While the Raptors organization declined to comment on rumors that they may want to bring Frost back, it is believed to be unlikely, with Frost reportedly being rankled by some within the organization that described him as a “hands-off” manager, despite bringing the organization to its first 4-Star Cup Finals in almost a decade during his tenure and the most playoff success the team had seen since the 20s.

Several teams at both the SHL and SMJHL level were expected to reach out to the Frost camp following the news that he was potentially back on the market, with teams such as the Minnesota Chiefs and the Toronto North Stars believed to be at the front of the pack. The Chiefs, of course, were slammed with a tampering punishment involving their, now fired, assistant General Manager before trading three first round picks and a second round pick to the Buffalo Stampede for a player quickly heading towards the twilight of his career in GOD McZehrl. Toronto, on the other hand, is an aging team in need of a positive influx of top level prospects to replace aging and traded stars such as Anders Christiansen and the questionable future of defenseman Bob Bergen. There is a concern among some SHL teams that have interest in Frost that he would insist on the team acquiring young Manhattan Rage star Alex Winters if he were to accept their management positions. Acquiring the young winger, the S45 winner of the Ryan Jesster trophy as rookie of the year, would not be an easy task with Rage GM Jakub Aittokallio viewing him as one of the franchise’s cornerstone players for the future. When I spoke to Aittokallio about what it would take to acquire Winters, he said it was “unlikely that most teams would be able to meet our valuation of Alex, and if those that can, we’re not overly comfortable moving him to.” This would presumably be a sticking point for any team looking to hire Frost, as the draft and prospect capital needed to acquire Winters from Manhattan would be extreme and potentially crippling for Frost’s new organization.

This does, of course, lend itself to the question of is there a fit with the Manhattan organization for Frost? With Assistant General Manager Tokek Takshak announcing that he would be leaving the organization’s management after the S48 season, one wonders if Frost would be interested in that job. We’re told that he is “extremely interested” in the job, and seems to view Manhattan as a great fit for him and his family. We first reported at the end of last season that there was mutual interest between the two parties in finding a spot for Frost in the scouting department, perhaps in the vacant Director of Amateur Scouting post that Aittokallio left when he took over as the full-time General Manager. While the two were unable to come to an agreement over position before the beginning of last season, the two have reportedly rekindled their interest since the end of the regular season.

The third option for Frost would be a return to the SMJHL. With the SMJHL Commissioner stepping down and several GMs reportedly leaving their jobs, the community belief is that Frost could, and perhaps should, return to the SMJHL. Several people that we’ve talked to believe that Frost would be considered among the front runners if he were to apply for the Commission Job, while people with an understanding of his thinking have led us to believe that there are only two situations in which he would come back to the SMJHL: as Commissioner or as GM/owner of Lethbridge with the ability to move the team. While this does put a dent in the chances of a team like Vancouver or Montreal who are rumored to have a management job opening up this summer, it’s not something that those sources would totally rule out. Who’s to say that one of those teams couldn’t put together a lucrative package that could convince Frost to return to the SMJHL in a situation that was less than preferential to a man who left the league just one year ago.

We have been told definitively, however, that Frost has not made any decisions on what he plans to do next season. There are plenty of possibilities out there for Frost and while it is believed that he wants to make a change, sourced close to him say that he’s not feeling pressure to make a decision in the short term. He can afford to wait for what he feels is a perfect opportunity and situation. It remains to be seen if he feels that situation is in Manhattan (with the Rage or with the SMJHL League Office), Lethbridge, or perhaps a team we didn’t discuss here. Frost is sure to be a sought after target this offseason as he looks to get back into management.
