Raiders Review: First Round Recap
#1
(This post was last modified: 07-15-2019, 09:04 AM by FinnRhys. Edit Reason: added tag )

Introduction: It was an exciting and close series befitting two teams, seeded #8 and #9, that struggled throughout the regular season. With both teams playing for the hope of continuing their season, both the Raiders and the Raptors gave it their all in every game, as evidenced by five of the six games being one-goal games. But, as in any sport, there was always going to be a winner and a loser. Fortunately for Halifax, that winner was us, although only by the slimmest of margins. In what will be remembered for the ages as one of the most hotly contested series in recent history, the Raiders held on to with the series 4-2 and advance to the second round of the SMJHL playoffs.

Game 1:  raiders Halifax 4 – 3 Colorado  Raptors  (OT)

In a game that has foreshadowed the excitement surrounding this series, the Halifax Raiders took a 1-0 series lead off an overtime goal from an unlikely source. It was a night of firsts for our unheralded hero but Halifax fans will be drinking plenty of rounds of beer and cheering unheralded undrafted free agent FR Finn-Rhys for at least one night. Finn-Rhys, a rookie defenseman who has recently earned second and third line minutes, was able to rifle the puck past the Colorado goalie, Knox Booth @Tate, five and a half minutes into the overtime period to give the hometown Halifax fans an early series lead and potentially, wrote himself into local lore depending on how the remainder of the Raiders playoff run goes.

raiders FR Finn-Rhys

“It was absolutely a dream come true for me. My first playoff game in my career and I got an open look off a great pass from Esa and I just took a chance,” a stunned Finn-Rhys stated after the game.

The Raiders came out swinging in the first period, jumping out to an early 1-0 lead just over a minute into the match as Cody @Winter is Coming was able to take a quick pass from Timmo Kyllonen @Lemonade and lift the puck over a sprawling Booth to start scoring. The rest of the period was mostly spent on defense as Halifax took 4 penalties in the period but held strong defensively as the penalty kill shut down any chance of a Raptor score.

If the first period went to the Raiders, the second clearly went to the Raptors as Gunnar Soderberg evened the game up at 1-1 five minutes before the end of the period. Colorado’s defense also buckled down in the period, much like the Raiders did in the first, and killed the only two penalties given.

The third period, in contrast to the previous two periods, had a frenetic pace as both teams fought to gain a decisive edge and defeat their foe. Colorado opened up the scoring in the period when Emeka Valentine-Okoli @ProjectSaint slotted one past Biz Nasty @GrilledTwinkiez to take a 2-1 lead. The lead was short lived, however, as Halifax responded less than thirty seconds later when FR Finn-Rhys made a long pass to Taisei-Tiikeri Wawazat @Wawazat who broke away from the defense and snuck one past Booth to knot it up at 2-2. Fifteen seconds later, Raptor Julio Tokolosh @Julio Tokoloshrepaid the favor and broke away from the defense to give the Raptors a 3-2 advantage that they would hold until late in the period. As the minutes passed by, the Raiders went into desperation mode frantically attacking the offensive zone. With less than three minutes left in the game defenseman Haley Knight @satf found a streaking Josef Kubenic @"Marc Bradford" who tallied the fourth goal of the period to make it 3-3 and send the game into overtime.

It was overtime heroics that gave Halifax the victory at home as Esa Parmborg @Steelhead77 registered his second assist of the night as he found Finn-Rhys who rifled the puck past Booth to start a city-wide celebration.

After the game Raiders GM Flareon @"Flareon4043" described the mood of the team entering overtime, “We just kept pushing tonight. We really fought hard and gave it our all, and you have to give credit to Colorado tonight. They certainly didn’t make it easy for us but we just thought that we were getting good opportunities and that if we just kept plugging away that we could end the night with a W and we did. I’m really proud of the way the team didn’t quit and you just knew that they’d find a way to win. It’s a great start to what will be a tough series, but it’s great that we were able to give this city a win on opening night for us. Hopefully we can give the city a few more and make it deep into the playoffs.”

Game 2:  raiders Halifax 2 – 1 Colorado  Raptors

If Game 1 was full of offensive fireworks, Game 2 was decidedly a defensive affair as Halifax held off several late charges by Colorado to hold on to a 2-1 victory and take what could be a decisive 2-0 series lead before playing the next two games in Colorado.

The first period was chippy and physical as both teams took three penalties a piece. Both teams struggled to get their offenses going as Knox Booth and Biz Nasty traded spectacular saves to keep the game scoreless until late in the first period. The lone goal of the period came twenty seconds into the third Halifax power play of the game. Timmo Kyllonen was able to hand a pass from Cody and take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

raiders Timmo Kyllonen

The first ten minutes of the second period were quiet as both teams continued to struggle offensively with neither team getting anything going. The latter half of the period is where the offenses finally found some success as Colorado tied up the game 1-1 off a Jean-Francois Mayer @YVOVD goal a little over ten minutes into the period. Colorado looked to be in charge offensively and it looked like only a matter of time until the Raptors gained the lead and took the win… that is until Jake Peralta @GoldenKnight took a hooking penalty with six minutes remaining in the period. Halifax, who hadn’t gotten anything going offensively for almost twenty minutes took advantage of the power play with Taisei-Tiikeri Wawazat slotting the decisive goal home off a Timmo Kyllonen pass.

Up 2-1 entering the third period, the Raptors offensive couldn’t capitalize on any of their offensive chances and the Raiders defense and goalie Biz Nasty held firm to give Halifax a 2-0 series lead.

“This was a game for goal-tenders and you really got to see some great saves tonight,” said winning goalie Biz Nasty who ended the night with 25 saves on 26 shots. “Our offense made the plays they needed to tonight and our defense really gave me a chance to make some solid saves… and man, hats off to Knox Booth. What’d he have, like 35 saves or something like that? He was ridiculous in net for Colorado and I just really fed off of him and knew I had to step up my game to match his.”

Raptors Knox Booth

Booth, who ended the night with 37 saves, not 35, was recognized as the first star of the game, a recognition not usually reserved for the losing goalie. “We just couldn’t make it happen tonight,” he said. “We’ve played tough and two one-goal losses is tough but we head back to Denver tonight and we’ll rest up and look to take advantage of our home ice and even this series up.”

Game 3:  raiders Halifax 1 – 3 Colorado  Raptors

Game 3 of the Halifax-Colorado series started off much the same way Game 2 ended. Whether it was the high mountain air or jet lag from the long flight from Halifax to Denver, neither team was able to take advantage of their offensive opportunities in the first period and went into the first intermission with the score deadlocked 0-0.

It wasn’t until midway through the second period that the goal-less streak was ended when Raptors forward Julio Tokolosh got the home crowd cheering, taking a pass from Jules Watt @nykonax to take a 1-0 lead. It was a lead that Colorado would hold onto throughout the rest of the game.

In the third period, Colorado extended their lead to 2-0 after a Teddy Nuggets @mtorino goal eleven minutes into the period. That goal, off assists from Richard Rocket @FusRoDah and Heat Siecker @"HeatSiecker", gave the Raptors a commanding lead that they would not relinquish as they held off several furious offensive rushes from the Raiders in a desperate attempt to close the gap. While ultimately futile, the Raiders were able to breathe some life into their offense as Haley Knight converted a power play goal with only seven minutes remaining to make it 2-1. Any life that was breathed into the Raiders bench was doused with four minutes left in the game when Calogero Crudelli @jason97 took a Knute Knurtsson @Ason94pass and slotted the puck home to make it 3-1. Tempers flared late in the game as the Raiders took out their frustrations with several hard hits leading to a fight between Eric Vanderberg and Josef Kubenic. Not known for fighting, both pugilists ended their bout in a draw and with it, any hope of a miraculous Halifax comeback ended.

Raptors Calogero Crudelli

“It was just really tough for us today and we just couldn’t get anything going,” said Josef Kubenic after the game. “I don’t know if it was the altitude or if we just came in over-confident or what but tonight just wasn’t our night. We still hold a slender lead in the series but we can’t play like this again if we have any hope of getting out of the first round. You can’t make the mistakes that we did tonight and come out with a win.”

Game 4:  raiders Halifax 3 – 4 Colorado  Raptors

Game 4 was a game that could only rival Game 1 in terms of excitement, both offensively and defensively as the stars from both teams came out and made it a night to remember as playoff hockey was in full swing on a balmy Colorado evening.

The game was a game of two halves, as both teams dominated the ice for a period and a half each, although it was Colorado that came out victorious in the end with a hard-fought 4-3 win. The first period was dominated by the Raptors as they scored two goals within twenty seconds of each other to take a commanding 2-0 lead into the first intermission. Seven and a half minutes into the game Julio Tokolosh, Colorado’s playoffs scoring leader, netted his third goal of the series to make it 1-0 off a Calogero Crudelli assist. Twenty seconds later, Jules Watt found the back of the net past a flailing Biz Nasty to make it 2-0.

The offensive onslaught would continue in the second period as Colorado scored two more unanswered goals to take a 4-0 lead halfway through the period. Four minutes in Jean-Francois Mayer scored his second goal of the series and three minutes later Knute Knurtsson netted the fourth Raptors goal in thirty minutes of gameplay. After such an onslaught, it was clear that the Raiders needed to change something to get a spark going, and that change was pulling their starting goalie, Biz Nasty who ended with only 6 saves on 10 shots, and putting in backup goalie Mike McKorsey. McKorsey, who has played sparingly this season, along with Raiders winger Cody provided the needed spark and got the Halifax offense out of the doldrums and back into contention. Cody almost single-handedly got the Raiders offense going again netting his second and third goals of the series five minutes apart to close out the second period and whittle the Raptor lead down to 4-2.

The third period was a back and forth affair until Taisei-Tiikeri Wawazat hit pay-dirt and netted his third goal of the series to close the gap to 4-3. Unfortunately for our Raiders, Knox Booth eliminated any further opportunities to tie the game up and the Raiders were unable to muster any further offense beyond their three goals.

With the win, Colorado evened up the series at two games apiece. As the series continues with another game in Colorado, it is important to note that, so far in the series, the home teams have won each game. If the Raiders want to have any chance to move on in the playoffs they must grab a win away from home before the series shifts back to Halifax for Game 6 and a potential Game 7.

Game 5:  raiders Halifax 3 – 2 Colorado  Raptors
In what Halifax GM Flareon called a “must-win” away game, Halifax held off a furious Colorado comeback bid to secure a 3-2 win in Denver and a 3-2 series lead. “We went into this game knowing we needed a win and we were fortunate and got what we needed. We haven’t done very well on the road this season so getting a road win in the playoffs is huge for us. Now we get to play the final game or games on home ice and hopefully we can take advantage of being home.”

Halifax opened up the scoring in the first period with two straight goals to gain an early 2-0 which Colorado would never recover from. Just over five minutes into the match Cody scored his fourth goal of the series off assists from Ricky Spanish @"Whikadoodle", his second in as many nights, and Timmo Kyllonen.  A little over eight minutes later, Halifax scored again, this time from Josef Kubenic who slotted his second goal of the series off assists from Ricardo Cotalay @ElPato and Esa Parmborg. With scoring coming from multiple lines, it was nice to see the Raiders’ offensive efforts finally prove fruitful as for the second game in a row they scored three goals after combining for only three goals in Games 2 and 3. The Raptors didn’t go down without a fight, however, as they closed the lead down to 2-1 with a marker from Emeka Valentine-Okoli with only 90 seconds left in the period, with assists going to Jake Peralta and Juulius Smonk @"storm".

Raptors Emeka Valentine-Okoli

The Raiders owned the second period, however, and took a commanding 3-1 after Josef Kubenic tallied his second goal of the night, and third of the series, almost six minutes into the frame. The goal, which was assisted by Esa Parmborg and Atlas Rush @Rublic, got the Raiders bench going as they erupted in celebration for one of their star players who has been struggling to get the puck into the back of the net as of late.

raiders Josef Kubenic

Colorado tried to make a game of it but their goal from Ja'Aj Coitus-Wagg @Jaemistightdabswith ten minutes remaining was too little too late as Halifax goalie Biz Nasty redeemed himself from his Game 5 benching and made several spectacular saves down the stretch to take the 3-2 win with 14 saves on 16 shots.

raiders Biz Nasty

“It felt great playing well and making some tough saves at the end of the game. I played really poorly last time out and I knew that I didn’t want to let me teammates down. It wasn’t just me though. Joey Kubes really got things going again and our defense was absolutely solid for me. They only let 16 shots get to me and really limited the shooting angles to give me a better chance. It was a good team win for sure,” said Biz Nasty post-game.

Josef Kubenic, the first star of the game added, “It was a tough win but we did what we needed to do. Now we just need to close the series out back home and show the fans that our regular season record isn’t indicative of our potential. This is playoff hockey at its best and anything can happen in the playoffs.”

Both the Raptors and the Raiders now face long flights back to Halifax where potential history will be made for Halifax. In what has been an exciting series thus far either Halifax will pull out a series win on home ice, or Colorado will comeback from a 2-0 series deficit to win out on road ice. As Josef Kubenic said, anything can happen during playoff hockey.

Game 6:  raiders Halifax 2 – 1 Colorado  Raptors

It was bedlam in Halifax as the Raiders hosted Game 6 in what would prove to be the final game of the Halifax-Colorado series. In a back-and-forth game, Halifax was able to edge Colorado 2-1 in front of the home crowd and secure a first round series win in a series that has been marked by the ups-and-downs and inconsistency of the Raiders offense.

The first period was a relatively quiet affair with neither team making any headway offensively as both defenses and goalies came to play. It wasn’t until Raptors defenseman Derek Bohne @wumaduce earned a penalty that the Raiders were able to get on the scoresheet off the power play. Raiders defenseman Haley Knight scored her second goal of the series off an assist from Esa Parmborg, his sixth of the series, to make it 1-0 with only 35 seconds remaining in the first period.

The Raptors didn’t wait long to retaliate, however. Just over eleven minutes into the second period center Knute Knurtsson broke free for his second goal of the series to even the game at 1-1.

The decisive third period was a back and forth affair with both teams appearing to be playing not to lose rather than playing to win. Both teams tried to limit their mistakes by focusing on physical hard-hitting defense, which ultimately led to a fight a little over six minutes in between the Raptors Jake Peralta and the Raiders Taisei-Tiikeri Wawazat as both pugilists tried to get their teams going. Foreshadowing the conclusion of the game, it was Wawazat who won the fight over Peralta, and after serving his major penalty, it was Wawazat, fittingly, who dealt the death blow to the Raptors. After taking a cross-ice pass from Timmo Kyllonen, Wawazat was able to laser the puck into the back of the net with less than five minutes remaining to give Halifax the 2-1 lead they would end the game with.

As the final horn blared over the ice, the Raiders bench erupted and the Raptors players stared disbelieving on the ice as the Raiders celebrated. The Raiders players, soaked up the atmosphere for all that it was worth, especially since it may not happen as often, or at all, as the second round matches up our #8 seed underdogs against the league’s #1 seeded St. Louis Scarecrows. It will be exciting to see how the Raiders respond to playing the league leaders in at least four games. But that will all be in the future. For tonight, the Raiders are basking in their glory and know that unlike the Raiders, their season still goes on.
