Hello and welcome to Fever’s Season 49 SHL Entry Draft review! The entry draft took place on Wednesday evening in Dallas, Texas at the home of the Renegades and it was an exciting time for all prospects and SHL management teams involved. I will reviewing all picks in the first round of the draft and gauging the value of each selection. With that being said, let’s jump right into it and get to the first overall selection in the Season 49 SHL Entry Draft!

Elijah Jones - Right Wing - Anchorage Armada
[Image: LosAngeles.png]
The Los Angeles Panthers held the first overall selection in the Season 49 SHL Entry Draft and elected to go with a familiar face in Anchorage right winger, Elijah Jones. Jones' agent also represents a former Panthers player so it was no surprise to see Los Angeles take Elijiah off the draft board here. He worked very hard during his draft season to make sure he was a high selection, logging 299 training hours prior to the draft, the most training hours of any eligible Season 49 SHL draft prospect. Jones was selected with the sixth overall selection in the Season 48 SMJHL Entry Draft and had himself a decent rookie season, posting nine goals and five assists for fourteen points with a -3 plus/minus rating, 22 body checks, eight penalty minutes and three blocked shots. During the Armada’s playoff run that came up short, losing in round three, Elijiah had a pair of goals to match his pair of assists for four points, a -4 plus/minus rating, two penalty minutes, five body checks and one shot block. It was a no-brainer for the Los Angeles Panthers to select Jones with the first overall selection and he is sure to be a can't miss prospect!

Noah Brusky - Defense - St. Louis Scarecrows
[Image: Texas.png]
The first defenseman and first first generational player are selected in the draft with the same pick when the Texas Renegades select Noah Brusky from the St. Louis Scarecrows. The American born defender spent 285 hours in the training room prior to the draft and he improved his draft stock a fair amount from the time of the Season 48 SMJHL Entry Draft when he was selected eighth overall by the Scarecrows. Brusky had a successful regular season, finding the back of the four times and adding fifteen assists for a total of nineteen points with a -11 plus/minus rating, 48 body checks, 51 blocked shots and 26 penalty minutes. St. Louis were disposed of quickly in the playoffs, despite finishing with the best regular season record and earning a first round bye, they fell victim to the Halifax Raiders in a five game series in the second round. During those five games, Noah posted three assists with a +1 plus/minus rating, ten body checks, six penalty minutes and four shot blocks. Noah Brusky should develop into a great player for the Texas Renegades and has franchise defenseman written all over him!

Bo Kane - Center - Colorado Raptors
[Image: sfpride-banner.png]
The first center was taken off the draft board when the San Francisco Pride selected second generation Canadian, Bo Kane from the Colorado Raptors. Kane had logged a total of 297 training hours leading up to the draft, one of the highest among SHL draft eligible prospects and was selected twelfth overall during the Season 48 SMJHL Entry Draft so he seen his draft stock jump up quite nicely. Bo put up some good numbers in his first SMJHL season, potting eleven goals and seven assists for eighteen points. He also played good defensively with sound positioning, finishing the season with a +5 plus/minus rating with 44 body checks, two blocked shots, six penalty minutes and a 43.86% faceoff percentage. The Colorado Raptors were eliminated in the opening round of the playoffs by the Halifax Raiders in a six game wild card series and Kane did not have a good series in terms of offensive production. He posted two assists with a -2 plus/minus rating, seven body checks, two shot blocks and a 66.67% faceoff percentage on just nine draws taken. The San Francisco Pride should be very happy with their selection here and I don't see any reason that Bo Kane will not develop into an offensive force to be reckoned with at the SHL level.

FR Finn-Rhys - Defense - Halifax Raiders
[Image: Edmonton.png]
The Edmonton Blizzard were on the clock with their first selection of the draft and grabbed Swiss defender, FR Finn-Rhys from the Halifax Raiders of the SMJHL. He is a first generational player who was undrafted in the SMJHL and rather signed as a free agent with Halifax and had spent 250 hours in the training room at the time of the draft so he is a bit off the board with this selection as Edmonton must have seen something to take him so early. Finn-Rhys had an alright season with the Raiders, scoring two times and adding four assists for six regular season points. He finished with a -4 plus/minus rating on the season while throwing 39 body checks, blocking 22 shots and taking 35 penalty minutes in 32 games played. Halifax were eliminated in five games during the third round of the playoffs FR stepped up his game, scoring one goal and adding six assists for seven points with a +1 plus/minus rating, fourteen penalty minutes, 22 body checks and 20 shot blocks. FR Finn-Rhys should develop into a good SHL two-way defenseman but was a little bit of a reach at this selection so we will have to wait and see how he develops to see if he was worth the reach from Edmonton or not.

Ricky Spanish - Left Wing - Halifax Raiders
[Image: Texas.png]
The Texas Renegades were back on the clock with their second pick of the draft and they take yet another player from the Halifax Raiders with the first left winger going off the board in Ricky Spanish. Spanish was selected in the second round with the eighteenth overall selection in the Season 48 SMJHL Entry Draft and the had 275 total training hours at the time of the Season 49 SHL Entry Draft, a non first generational player who comes from a line of successful SHL players. Spanish had a decent offensive Season 48 campaign, scoring four goals with fourteen assists for eighteen total points. Ricky posted a horrid -14 plus/minus rating for the regular season with 35 body checks, five blocked shots and ten penalty minutes. During the Raiders playoff run that came up short, Spanish again had some good offensive numbers but was a liability defensively as he scored once and added five assists for six points. He finished with a -10 plus/minus rating, four penalty minutes, eleven body checks and five shot blocks. The Texas Renegades get a future all-star caliber playmaking forward with the fifth overall selection here but he will need to shore up his defensive game before he will be ready to make the jump to the SHL.

Cody - Right Wing - Halifax Raiders
[Image: WestKendall.png]
A third straight Halifax Raiders prospect gets taken off the draft board with the sixth overall selection by the West Kendall Platoon, who select American right winger, Cody, another non first generational player who comes from an agency with a knack for signing successful SHL players. He had logged 292 hours of training time at the time of the draft and was selected third overall at the Season 48 SMJHL Entry Draft so his draft stock dropped just a little bit from that time. Cody had very good point production during Season 48, leading all Halifax rookies in points and ranking third among all SMJHL rookies, scoring sixteen goals and thirteen assists for 29 points with a -19 plus/minus rating, 64 body checks, ten shot blocks and sixteen penalty minutes. Cody continued his offensive prowess into the playoffs, scoring eight goals and two assists for ten points with a -10 plus/minus rating, six penalty minutes, 22 hits and four shot blocks.Cody is very likely to become an elite SHL goal scorer for the West Kendall Platoon but he has been a defensively liability when on the ice so that will need to be taken care of before he can jump into the SHL lineup.

Khabib Nurmagomedov - Left Wing - Detroit Falcons
[Image: Edmonton.png]
Edmonton was back on the clock and on the draft podium for their second selection of the Season 49 SHL Entry Draft with the seventh overall selection and they went off the board a bit again with the selection of Detroit's Khabib Nurmagomedov. Nurmagomedov is a first generation player who went undrafted in the SMJHL and the Russian left winger had logged 263 training hours at the time of the draft. Khabib scored ten goals and five assists for fifteen points. He also added 30 body checks, four blocked shots and eight penalty minutes with a +1 plus/minus rating. The Detroit Falcons were eliminated in the second round of the playoffs to the Anchorage Armada in seven games and Nurmagomedov put one goal on the board during the Falcons' playoff run with a -2 plus/minus rating, no penalty minutes, six body checks and no shot blocks. The Edmonton Blizzard seem to have seen something in Khabib Nurmagomedov to go off the board and take him here with this selection, not unlike Finn-Rhys with their earlier selection and we will have to wait and see how that pans out for the Blizzard.

Jan Zacha - Center - Vancouver Whalers
[Image: Toronto.png]
The Toronto North Stars make their first selection in the draft at the number eight overall selection and decide to take Czech Center, Jan Zacha from the Vancouver Whalers of the SMJHL. Zacha was selected with the seventh overall selection in the Season 48 SMJHL Entry Draft so he pretty much stayed around the same position where he was drafted then and had 269 total training hours on draft night and is a second generation player. Jan had a decent season in Vancouver with the Whalers as he scored five goals and five assists for ten points on the third line and added 46 body checks, seven blocked shots, 22 penalty minutes and a -3 plus/minus rating. During the playoffs and the Vancouver Whalers 4 Star Cup Championship winning season, Zacha chipped in a bit offensively, putting three assists on the scoresheet with a +1 plus/minus rating. He also posted thirteen body checks and two shot blocks. The playmaking center should be a good pick-up for Toronto and help them be a competitive SHL team once he has time to develop his game in the SMJHL.

Prince Devitt - Defense - Kelowna Knights
[Image: SHL-Dragons-Banner.png]
The ninth overall selection in the Season 49 SHL Entry Draft belonged to the Calgary Dragons and they selected Irish defenseman, Prince Devitt from the Kelowna Knights. Devitt is a non first generation player who comes from an agency who have signed successful SHL players in the past and had accumulated 256 training hours heading into the draft. Prince played third pairing minutes in Kelowna and with that being said, had a pretty good season for the amount of minutes played. He scored four goals and nine assists, totaling thirteen points with a dreadful -13 plus/minus rating, 66 body checks, 41 blocked shots and 60 penalty minutes during the regular season. During the playoffs which was short-lived and ended in six games in the opening wild card round against the Lethbridge Lions, Devitt scored one goal and three assists for four points with a +2 plus/minus rating, twelve penalty minutes, ten body checks and five shot blocks. Calgary should be very happy to get a player with the pedigree of Prince Devitt this late into the first round of the draft and he should develop into an elite defensive defenseman at the SHL level, shutting down opposing top players on a nightly basis.

Skao Anazibf - Center - Detroit Falcons
[Image: Hamilton.png]
The Hamilton Steelhawks make their first selection of the draft with the tenth overall selection when they pluck Russian center and non first generational player, Skao Anazibf off the draft board. Anazibf attained 266 hours of training prior to the draft and moves up a bit from his SMJHL draft position which was seventeenth overall in the second round. Skao finished seventh in rookie scoring during the regular season, scoring eleven goals and twelve assists for 23 points with a +8 plus/minus rating. He added 28 body checks, four blocked shots and twelve penalty minutes, a great rookie season for the smallish forward. He was not able to carry that play over into the playoffs, in the Falcons seven playoff games, scoring no goals and one assist for one point and a -2 plus/minus rating. Skao added four body checks and should work out well for the Hamilton Steelhawks' future plans, becoming an elite playmaking centerman at the SHL level once he developed enough to make the jump.

Mikas Bieksa - Defense - Vancouver Whalers
[Image: sfpride-banner.png]
The San Francisco Pride are back on the clock at the number eleven overall selection in the draft and opt to go with Lithuanian defender in the form of Vancouver Whalers third generational talent, Mikas Bieksa. Bieksa had a decent amount of training hours at draft time, coming in at 252 and was a free agent signing by the Whalers in Season 48, rather than going through the draft. He put up some decent offensive numbers for a rookie SMJHL defenseman during the regular season, scoring two goals and five assists for seven points but held a plus/minus rating of +1. Mikas delivered 20 body checks and blocked 28 shots with 20 penalty minutes. The Vancouver Whalers made it all the way to the 4 Star Cup Finals and were able to hoist that sacred trophy and Bieksa stepped up his scoring prowess during their playoff run. He scored a five goals with a +9 plus/minus rating, eight penalty minutes, eleven shot blocks and eleven body checks in nineteen games played. Mikas Bieksa was a decent pick in this draft position and should develop into a nice offensive defenseman one day for the San Francisco Pride who can run the powerplay for them.

Anthony Archer - Left Wing - Anaheim Outlaws
[Image: barracuda-banner.png]
The Tampa Bay Barracuda get their first selection of the draft here at the number twelve overall selection and elected to go with Anaheim Outlaws left winger, Anthony Archer who is a first generation player and has to be considered to be a steal. Archer had logged 299 hours of training as of draft day and had a good regular season statistically for the Outlaws, scoring twelve goals and seven assists for nineteen total points with 52 body checks, eleven blocked shots, 24 penalty minutes and a -5 plus/minus rating. During Anaheim’s run to the 4 Star Cup Championship where they eventually lost to the Vancouver Whalers, Anthony posted five goals and three assists for eight points with a +7 plus/minus rating, twelve penalty minutes, 40 body checks and no shot blocks. This was a very good selection, especially considering that Anthony Archer was selected tenth overall in the SEason 48 SMJHL Entry Draft and he has all the tools to develop into an elite SHL power forward who can score goals as well as bring a physically imposing element to his game.

Derek Bohne Jr. - Defense - Colorado Raptors
[Image: Toronto.png]
At the number thirteen overall slot in the draft, we see the Toronto North Stars on the clock with the first of two consecutive picks for them and they draft Colorado Raptors American born defenseman, Derek Bohne Jr. Bohne Jr, a third generation player had 277 total hours of training prior to the draft and had a decent season on the Raptors’ second pairing, finding the back of the net two times and recording ten assists for twelve points with a -7 plus/minus rating. Derek had 82 body checks during the regular season with 52 blocked shots and 50 penalty minutes, bringing a hard-nosed defensive game. During Colorado's six game playoff run, Bohne Jr. was unable to post any points on the scoresheet with a +1 plus/minus rating, six penalty minutes, six body checks and four shot blocks. This was a good pick from Toronto late in the first round of the draft and Derek Bohne Jr. will hope to become a solid two-way SHL defender one day but he will need to step up his offensive numbers big time before that can happen.

Knox Booth - Goaltender - Colorado Raptors
[Image: Toronto.png]
The fourteenth overall selection in the Season 49 SHL Entry Draft seen the first goaltender selected as the Toronto North Stars snatched up Knox Booth from the Colorado Raptors once more. Booth is a first generational talent who was selected 20th overall with the final pick in the second round during the Season 48 SMJHL Entry Draft and had a good amount of training hours on draft night, with 274. He started sixteen games for the Raptors and made 21 appearances in total, posting a record of 4-8-3 with a 0.891 save percentage, 2.60 goals against average, four penalty minutes, one assist an no shutouts. Like previously mentioned, the Colorado Raptors did not last long in the Season 48 SMJHL playoffs but Knox took over as the starting netminder, playing every minute for Colorado and posting a 2-3-1 record with a 0.907 save percentage, 2.47 goals against average and no shutouts. The Toronto North Stars should be happy to get a player of Knox Booth's talent level at this point in the draft and he should become a quality starting goaltender for them but that will take time for him to develop.

Artem Mozgov - Left Wing - Vancouver Whalers
[Image: Winnipeg.png]
With the fifteenth overall selection, the defending Western Confernce Champion Winnipeg Jets select Russian left winger, Artem Mozgov from the Vancouver Whalers, a first generation talent who had 256 training hours at the time of the draft and was signed as a free agent by the Whalers, rather than entering the Season 48 SMJHL Entry Draft. Mozgov suited up for all 50 games with the Whalers on their third line, scoring eight goals and three assists for eleven points with a -6 plus/minus rating, 25 body checks, a shot block and six penalty minutes. Artem did not chip in all that much offense during the Whalers championship run, posting just one goal and a -7 plus/minus rating, two penalty minutes, twelve body checks and three shot blocks. This late in the first round, the Winnipeg Jets have to be happy to land Artem Mozgov who hopes to develop into a punishing SHL power forward, much like now teammate, Noah Gallagher.

Noah Andros - Defense - Detroit Falcons
[Image: Edmonton.png]
To complete the first round of the Season 49 SHL Entry Draft, the Edmonton Blizzard have yet another pick and go with Season 48 SMJHL Entry Draft first overall pick, Swiss blueliner, Noah Andros of the Detroit Falcons. Andros is not a first generational player and had accumulated 257 training hours at the time of the draft. Noah put up three goals and eleven assists for fourteen points during the regular season with a +5 plus/minus rating, 31 body checks, 39 blocked shots and 32 penalty minutes. In the playoffs, in seven games played, he scored a goal and an assist for two points with a +1 plus/minus rating, no penalty minutes, two hits and four shot blocks. Edmonton and Noah Andros should be a good fit as he develops down in Detroit until he is ready to make the jump to the SHL and become a great offensive force from the back end while not giving up much defensively.

Well, that does it for this season. I hope you enjoyed this presentation as much as we enjoyed bringing it to you. See you all next season!
