PGS S49 Game 90: Anchorage Armada vs Halifax Raiders
#1

[Image: Anchorage.png]vs. [Image: Raiders-banner.png]

Hello out there, we’re on the air, it’s another hockey night. Tonight, we have the Anchorage Armada (5-12-1) facing off against the Halifax Raiders (8-7-2). It’s been a tough start of the season for Anchorage, but they’ve shown some signs of life recently, winning 3 of their past 4 games. The Raiders, who have done comparatively much better than the Armada, are still not standing out the way we’d expect from a cup contender. Both teams will be hard out of the gate tonight. In their past two outings, these teams fought hard until the very end, with Anchorage winning one and Halifax winning the other. I don’t expect this game to be decided until well into the last minute.

First Period
From the first faceoff, Halifax takes control. Most of the first 10 minutes of the game takes place in the Armada zone. After minutes of sustained pressure, the Armada begin to crumble and get sloppy. This comes to a head when, during a moment of rare offense for the Alaskan team, Joe Kerr takes a stupid penalty for goaltender interference. The Raiders’ first goal comes shortly after the end of the penalty, when Josef Kubinec collects a loose puck from the feet of Darnell Johnson and roofs it over the shoulder of Ian Venables Goal (ANC: 0 HFX: 1). Things turn from bad to worse for the Armada when soon after the goal Jake Primeau takes an interference penalty, awarding another powerplay for the Raiders. At around 11 minutes into the first period, after a Halifax icing, the Armada coach briefly calls his team over for a quick pep talk. Nobody knows what he said to them, but things certainly turned around after that. The following 3 minutes were spent in the Halifax zone, where Anchorage scored twice in 28 seconds. The first one came from a blistering wrister from Elijah Jones Goal (ANC: 1 HFX: 1), and the second by Raphael D’Alcott – on his third consecutive shot attempt Goal (ANC: 2 HFX: 1).

Second Period
At a minute and a half into the second frame, the Armada prove yet again that they can’t stop taking dumb penalties. Augustus Wang is sent off for hooking, and on the ensuing Halifax man advantage the Raiders powerplay unit does a fantastic job hemming Anchorage into their zone. At the end of the powerplay Halifax manage to make a line change for fresh legs, but Anchorage can’t make it to the long change. Connor Tanner steps off the Raiders bench, collects a rebound, and promptly slides it around the Armada goalie into the net Goal (ANC: 2 HFX: 2). Halifax take two penalties in the second period, but thanks to a heroic  effort from Raiders goalie Biz Nasty, the Armada are left with no goals on 10 shots this period.

Third Period
Third period begins with both teams trading chances. At around two minutes, Jonas Larsen for Anchorage collects a loose puck off a FR Finn-Rhys shot block and slides it five-hole into the net  Goal (ANC: 3 HFX: 2). Later, Halifax’s top line held an exhibition as a nifty tick tack toe passing play left the Armada looking like shipwrecks. Esa Parmborg won the faceoff, slid it to Josef Kubinec on the left wing, who rifled a pass to Cody in the high slot, who found Parmborg again who had snuck around for the tap-in  Goal (ANC: 3 HFX: 3). The rest of the period passes with little offense mounted by both sides. It seems like both team’s coaches are hesitant to lose the extra point by being too aggressive.

Overtime
The overtime period is a flurry of activity, with 8 attempted shots in 2 and a half minutes. The Raiders mount an early offensive with quality chances by Ricky Spanish and Atlas Rush, but Ian Venables shuts the door. The Armada collect the puck and rush the Raiders’ zone, but after Elijah Jones misses the net Halifax takes back over. Timmo Kyllonen’s shot is blocked by Johnny Sins and Karl Krashwagen is robbed by Venables. When Ricky Spanish is nailed against the boards by Elijah Jones, Augustus Wang notices an opportunity. He collects the puck that squirted out from the skates of Spanish and Jones, and streaks up ice. Stavros Halkias follows to support him, and the two Armada players bear down on Adam Barron of Halifax. Wang passes to Halkias, and Barron throws himself down on to the ice to block the shot. Wang cuts across to collect the puck, and him and Halkias move in 2 on 0 against Biz Nasty. Wang fakes a pass to Halkias and rips a snapshot shortside, beating Biz Nasty just under his outstretched glove Goal (ANC: 4 HFX: 3).

Physical Play Comparison

About an average number of hits this game, maybe a bit on the low side, since Halifax only had eleven. In any case, neither team had a significant stand out for hits. Elijah Jones had three for Anchorage, and Stacy Jefferson Jr had three for Halifax. A whole bunch of ones and twos fill in for the rest of the hits. Blocks are a pretty similar story. The only slight exception is Finn-Rhys for Halifax with three shots blocked, which is a solid number. Again, a handful of ones and twos make up the rest on each side. In this game, I give Anchorage the edge in the physical game. Seven more hits, but only one less block. In a game where both sides had the same number of shots, I think this may have given them the slight edge they needed to come away with the win.

Rookie Analysis

Rookie Forwards: The forwards for the Armada did not really make any positive impact in this game. Not a single point between the 5 of them and a combined -5 means that they might have been less of a positive influence than they thought. They also didnt take a single shot, not a good look for this squad this late in the season. They should be doing much better than that. Despite most the the Raiders rookie forwards not doing seemingly anything this game, the team did have a goal by rookie Parmborg which helped the team keep this game close. Overall the forwards for the Raiders made much more of a positve impact for their team.

Winners: Raiders

Rookie Defensemen: Armada defensmen really stepped up this game. Wang even was able to slot a goal home in this game, he hopes that this goal could start him on a hot streak, as this two way d man really hasnt seen his offensive game take off the way it was expected. Michaud didnt do anything positive or negitive in this one. He played but didnt show up on the score sheet outside of his 2 PIMs. Halifax defenders were able to also get a point, with Barron getting an assist in this one. Similar to Michaud, Jefferson Jr didnt show up on the score sheet. Overall The Armada defensemen were able to get a goal to the Raiders assist, so this on goes to the boat gang.

Winners: Armada

Rookie Goalies: Montgomery didnt see the ice tonight, interesting considering the Armada were entering into this game sitting last in the league and rest would have been valuable for Nasty in this one. Venables did see the ice tonight for the Armada. Having been a sure shot to play in net each night for the Armada of late his performances have been hit or miss. In this game Venalbles allowed 3 goals on the 24 shots that he saw, out dueling Nasty on the other end who also saw 24 shots in this overtime thriller. Venables play has been steadily improving over the last few games a trend that he hopes he can continue for the foreseeable future. Overall:Having a goalie play has not necessarily been a sure shot to win this category, but with that being said, out dueling a more veteran net-minder does make you a sure shot to win.

Winner: Armada.

Unsuccessful PP or Strong PK?
The Armada took 5 reckless penalties which led to 5 big opportunities for the Raiders to take control of the game. Unfortunately, the Raiders were unable to capitalize on any of their opportunities. Being 0/5 for the night was a big factor in the Raiders' loss as they were barely able to generate any good shots or scoring chances on the powerplay. On the other hand, the Armada were successful in killing off all of their penalties which may have provided them with the necessary morale boost to stay in the game because spending 10 out of the 60 minutes in a game with a man down is bound to get the boys going. However, this may just have been a good game for the Armada's PK as they sit in the middle of the pack when it comes to killing off penalties.

Top Line Minutes Helping Augustus Wang
During a post-game interview with Augustus Wang himself, he emphasized the importance of having the trust of the coach and the GM to play top-line minutes even though he is a rookie defenseman. Wang expressed that his defensive partner, Gabriel Johnson, has been a big factor in his development as a player and as a person. The experience and mentorship that Wang has received definitely shows and he credits his game-winning goal in overtime to all the knowledge he has received from everyone around him. Wang stated that even though his team isn't doing great in the standings, they've "come together and formed a welcoming atmosphere" which has removed the rookie-veteran divide that typically occurs in the locker room. Regardless of what you have to say about him, you need to commend his ability to step in as a rookie and play impactful minutes on both ends of the ice. Wang has been sound defensively and he was rewarded tonight with the game winner in overtime.

Armada Heating Up
It seems that the Armada are finally turning their season around after starting 2-11-1. They are now 4-1-0 after this win over the Raiders. There are many different reasons why they struggled in the beginning of the season such as the many rookies that have joined the team and goalie Cole Beckett struggling at the start, but the growing pains seem to have subsided. Bichoff, Michaud, Venables and Wang have been the heads of the rookie movement as they have quickly adapted to the play of the SMJHL. Even though not all of them are producing at the moment, they have all been valuable defensively and holding the team together in these tough times. It is often difficult to remain positive when your team is losing a lot, but the Armada seem to have shaken off the rust and seem poised to make an impact in the league. Beware of the potential of this team as they become more and more accustomed to the league and how the flow of the game works.

First Comment - 130 words

The Good:
Anchorage and Halifax both had different lines each time scoring goals with a total of 7 goals scored the entire game with Anchorage grabbing 4 and Halifax left with 3. Overall both teams’ lines performed superbly and unlike a lot of teams in the SMJHL was not dependent on one line carrying the scoring for either team but instead was a truly team affair as everyone put in effort while on the ice. The other amazing part of the game was that both Penalty Kill squads absolutely stomped out the power play with Anchorage stopping 5 for 5 and Halifax stopping 2 for 2. Absolutely ruthless defense by both teams in what was a high skill and tight game all the way up to the end of overtime.

Second Comment - 161 words

The Bad:
The game saw 14 penalty minutes with Anchorage receiving 10 and Halifax receiving 4. Penalties were seen in all three periods though thankfully overtime didn’t last that long stopping someone from making a boneheaded mistake. The only reason this only gets a bad is because both teams penalty kills were absolutely in point in what was an obvious breakdown of discipline on both sides. Specifically, we see Joe Kerr early in the first period grab a goalie interference penalty for Anchorage only to once again see Anchorage boxed again when Jake Primeau grabs an interference penalty. Anchorage obviously needs to get back on the practice ice and discuss what are legal hits and what are boneheaded moves. Though not to be outdone we see Esa Parmborg for Halifax in the second period grab a goalie interference penalty as well. Ok boys let’s remember the big guy in pads is not there for checking practice so play the puck instead.

Third Comment - 208 words

The Ugly:
Typically, goalies are there to stop the puck, but I guess Venables and Nasty need a refresher course as they both seemed out to lunch for this game. Both only faced a total of 48 shots combined each facing a total of 24 shots a piece yet neither had a percentage above .900. Instead we see Venables with a lousy .875 and Nasty with an even worse .833. The only thing that saved this from being a complete meltdown of points was that both sides penalty kills were willing to put in the work on the rink while the goalies obviously were busy making snowmen or smoking refer or whatever the hell they were doing. The other losers of the night are both teams Power Plays with Anchorage going 0 of 2 and Halifax in an utter humiliation going a whopping 0 of 5. Not only could this game have been an easy victory for Halifax with a half competent power play, but it could have led to pure humiliation for Anchorage whose goalie was barely performing as is. Hell, Biz Nasty might have only been rated a bad if Halifax’s power play had decided to not partake of whatever their goalie was smoking in net.

Hero Augustus Wang
Just 2 minutes and 28 seconds into overtime, Augustus Wang made the first and only necessary shot for the Anchorage Armada in over time, securing the game for his team. It was Wangs only shot on net of the game, but he sure did pick a good time to make it. He made one attempt earlier but it sailed wide. Wang also had 2 strong hits and a blocked shot during the game. The Armada's top pairing defensemen made it known he was here to play the game. Early in the second period Augustus Wang was put in the box for hooking, but the Armada made sure to score shortly after the penalty was up.

3 point night for Kubinec
3rd Start of the game Josef Kubinec had a very impressive game despite the Raiders loss tonight. Kubinec made his dominance known early in the game, with a quick two shots on net resulting in a goal 9 minutes into the game. He followed that up with another shot 1 minute later. Josef Kubinec was determined to not slow down. Late in the third, down 3 to 2, Kubinec gave his team a chance to win with a beautiful setup to Cody to Esa Parmborg who tied the game. Kubinec unfortunately did not get a chance to play overtime and could not save his team.

Even Shots
It's always fun to see a game of dueling goalies. You like to see one where none can blame goal tending for poor performance and each side has equal support. Well that was the truth of tonights game, with 24 shots apiece and almost 21 saves apiece. It was that last shot in overtime that did Halifax Raider goaltender Biz Nasty in. It seemed like the Anchorage Armada's game for much of the 1st and 2nd periods, but the Halifax Raiders rallied behind Biz Nasty to secure a tie. Biz Nasty did his best, but his first and only shot on net in OT found the back of the net

There's something in the water for the special teams of Anchorage and Halifax this game, or at the very least just the water of the players on each team's Penalty Kill units. Both teams went dead silent on the Power Play and resulted in the game having an entirely 100% successful Penalty Kill across the board. None out of the seven opportunities were converted on, with Halifax having five huge chances that amounted to a big ol' goose egg in total on the scoreboard. Darnell Johnson really stepped compared to one of the recent games where they were a huge liability to the Armada, this time helping the Armada Penalty Kill first line contribute to a perfect game for their unit.

First Comment: Szlerchek’s 3 Keys to Anchorage’s Win

In what was a thrilling back and forth game between the Anchorage Armada and the Halifax Raiders, the Armada would win the game 4-3 in overtime. While they fell behind first, the following 3 keys led to their eventual victory. The first key was the play of their top line, namely Stavros Halkias and Jonas Larsen. Halkias on route to becoming the first star of the game, recorded 3 assists. Larsen would score a goal and an assist of his own. This line was the primary driving force, as they were a +3 on the ice. The second key was the physical game. Anchorage outhit Halifax 18-11, and that dominance led to controlling the pace of play. The physical play was led by second line winger Elijah Jones with 3, who also scored the only goal not by a first liner. The third key was taking advantage when given the chance to win the game. Augustus Wang, and the Armada for that matter, only needed one shot in overtime to make it count. The top pairing defenseman beat Biz Nasty for the game winner.

Second Comment: Pahajaarinen’s 3 Keys to Halifax’s Loss

This game is the game fans get up to see. Both teams exchanging goals till an eventual winner in the end. Unfortunately for the Halifax Raiders, they were on the wrong end, a 4-3 overtime loss to the Anchorage Armada. These 3 keys were why they lost in the end. First was the powerplay was non-existent. They went 0-for-5 with the man advantage. That many chances with no success will always give the opposing team some momentum. While they didn’t allow any themselves, the Raiders were only shorthanded twice. Any goal here, and odds are we are talking about the Armada here and not the Raiders. The second key to Halifax’s loss was goaltenders Biz Nasty’s play in the first period. He allowed two goals in less than 30 seconds, giving up the tying and go ahead goal in that time. Those 2 goals came on just 5 shots. He did play better as the game went on (2 goals on 19 shots), but by then it was too late, the Raiders were playing catch up the rest of the night. The third key to their loss was the inability to capitalize on their overtime chances. They outshot the Armada 2-1, but that one was the winner for Anchorage.

Third Comment: AGH’s Closer Look at the First Star

The game we are looking at today is the one between the Anchorage Armada and the Halifax Raiders. It was an exciting back and forth affair, that, in the end saw Anchorage emerge victorious in overtime by the final 4-3. Stavros Halkias would be named the first star from the Armada. The center on the top line, between wingers Raphael D’ Alcott and Jonas Larsen, is in his third SMJHL season, and was a second round pick of the Los Angeles Panthers in season 48. He plays top line minutes in all situations, as evidence by his over 4 minutes of penalty kill time and nearly two minutes on the powerplay, where he played over 21 minutes in total. He proved to be pivotal in the faceoff dot, by winning over 50% of his draws going 12 for 21. His biggest contribution to the game though was his playmaker, recording 3 assists, including on Augustus Wang’s winner. He finished with 2 shots and was a plus-3, meaning his PK play also translated to his defensive play in 5-on-5 situations. As you can see, Halkias had definitely delivered a first star performance.

Rookie Performance Spotlight

Armada Augustus Wang  Armada
Another day, another great performance by the Armada rookie defenceman Augustus Wang. Its beginning to become something that the fans up in Anchorage have come to expect from the rookie, a solid defensive performance night after night combined with solid offensive output. On this particular evening he played just under 19 minutes on the ice, spending time on both of the PK and the PP. Tonight he also scored the game winning goal in overtime, solidifying himself the MVP of the game in this writers eyes even though he was left out of the 3 stars in the post-game review.

raiders Adam Barron  raiders
Although Halifax is among the teams with the least amount of rookie players this season, one could argue that they managed to pick up some of the most interesting talent. Adam Barron is definitely one of those players. In tonight's game he managed to add an assist to a decent offensive season as well as some strong defensive numbers.

(Losing) Player of the Game

Josef Kubinec (LW) – Josef Kubinec, assisted by Cody and Adam Barron, scored the opening goal of the game for the Halifax Raiders against the Anchorage Armada, in what seems to be a trend for (Losing) Players of the Game to score early and lead their team to defeat. Kubinec also had an assist on both Conor Tanner's second period, also assisted by Jon Snow, and Esa Parmborg's third period goal, again assisted by Cody, being the only play to help with all three goals by the Raiders. He also had three shots on goal, two in the first period and one in the third. Unfortunately, the team just couldn't rally behind Kubinec enough to defeat the Armada.
