PGS Game 112 Anchorage vs Anaheim

Armada Anchorage vs Anaheim  Outlaws

Preview: Coming into todays game, the Armada are playing their best hockey of the season. After a rough start to the year, recent line adjustments have started to see things turn around for a team that many thought should be in the top half of the SMJHL and not fighting to avoid being in the cellar. With a 5 game winning streak on the line, Anchorage is looking to continue their good fortunes against Anaheim, a team hungry for a victory after being shutout in their last contests and a tough shootout loss in the game prior to that. With both teams looking to move closer to the top of the league, let's see how this game turned out.

1st Period: The game started off hot with an early faceoff in the Anaheim zone is won by Primeau back to Michaud. Michaud moved the puck back to Primeau who slid the puck across to Jones who quickly put a shot on net and past Niederreiter for the first goal of the game, less than a minute in. The rest of this period saw the Armada take multiple penalties and Anaheim dominated the play. Late in the period with the Armada on the back foot, Larsen took a lazy hooking call and Anaheim was able to quickly capitalize on this powerplay when Bombay won a faceoff to Archer, who passed to Selman, who slotted the puck past Venables to tie it up late in the first. Both teams entered into the locker room tied at 1, but Anaheim dominated the shot counter by a score of 12-7

2nd Period: Considering how great the first period was, the second period was a complete snooze fest from start to finish. Anaheim appeared to take a nap during the intermission and didnt show up in the second. They need to thank Niederreiter for keeping them in the game this period because the 2 shots that they were able to put up came no where close to the 9 that Anchorage had. That being said after the second 20 minutes both teams had to regroup and come out storming for the third since the next goal could be the one that helps their team take two points on the night.

3rd Period: Third period started similar to the first, with an early goal, this time by the Outlaws who came out quickly and looked to put the Armada away. A great shot by Connolly put the Outlaws up 2-1. On the ensuing faceoff, Mander tripped an Armada winger, putting Anchorage a man up. Like most lazy penalties, this one ended up being costly when Halkias was able to slap home a shot that bounced off the end boards to tie the game up. The quick reply by Anchorage put Anaheim on the back foot and with the pressure they were able to apply, Halkias was able to get a bad rebound by Niederreiter and quickly slide the puck into the open net, putting Anchorage up 3-2. With momentum against them, tempers on the Outlaw side began to rise and Mader took it out by slashing an Armada player. With their second powerplay of the period, Anchorage capitalized again in the same way, this time with Wang finishing the play off a puck that bounced off the end boards. Wang's goal put the Outlaws away and for the remainder fo the game they couldn't get anything going, only managing 6 shots in the period.

Final Score
Anchorage 4 : Anaheim 2

Three Stars of the Game

1: Stavros Halkias (2G: 0A: 2P)

2: Jonas Larsen (0G: 3A: 3P)

3: Raphael D'Alcott (0G: 2A: 2P)

Finally, Some Good Fucking Power Play
The Anchorage Armada have long struggled on the powerplay. They have consistently failed to deliver sustained pressure and deliver shots on net. Tonight, they managed to convert on two of their three attempts. The first attempt came at 8:21 into the second period. The Armada attempted 7 shots, 4 of which hit the net. On the second attempt, 1:24 into the third period, Anchorage scored to end the power play after 2 shot attempts, one of them (the goal) on net. The third power play attempt came at 8:25 in the third period, with the same results as the second. Overall, tonight's results poke holes in the conventional wisdom that getting pucks to the net is the best way of scoring on the powerplay. Tonight the Armada showed that sometimes making the extra pass and the clever play can get very quick results.

Goalie Battle
Ian Venables logged a very respectable performance on the night. Making 18 saves out of 20 shots, he slotted in at an impressive 0.900 sv%. Facing only 2 shots in the second period, he showed great tenacity by not falling into the trap of monotony. Patrick Niederreiter's performance on paper might look lackluster at first glance, but when looking a bit deeper it is clear that he was let down by his defensive corps. Overall on the night he put up 27 saves on 31 shots, logging a 0.871 sv%. But looking at the breakdown by period, it is clear that the Anaheim defense completely collapsed in the third period and allowed Niederreiter to be shelled for 20 minutes. In the first 2 periods, Niederreiter saved 15 of 16 shots, a 0.938 sv%. In the third period alone, there were another 15 shots. If Anaheim want to succeed, they'll have to work on conditioning and support Niederreiter like he needs.

Unsung Hero
Jonas Larsen flew under the radar tonight, but he was the glue that held his team together. He played 16 minutes tonight, but it definitely seemed like way more than that. Any time the Armada put some offense together, you can bet Larsen was part of it. His stats reflect his contributions in the assists column, where he pegged 3 on the night -- all three third period goals for Anchorage. The only flaw in Larsen's night was his weak hooking penalty at the end of the first period. Caught at the end of a long shift, he hooked John Hawke in the neutral zone instead of moving his feet to get back into position of go off for a change. That kind of weak lazy playing is what got Anchorage into their early season losing streak.

No Discipline
This tilt game featuring the Armada and the Outlaws had 8 penalties taken. The total penalty minutes between both teams was 16 which was evenly split between 4 for each team. An important note is that the Armada taking 3 penalties in the first period. Taking that many penalties in the first period makes it extremely difficult to get any momentum started as you're down a man for about a third of the period. Fortunately for them, they were only punished on only one play and their ability to kill off the remaining penalties came back to reward them as they score 2 powerplay goals out of 3 goals total in the third period. If the Outlaws were able to capitalize on the powerplay opportunities that they had early in the game then they would’ve been in full control of the game. However, Ian Venables shut the door by stopping 11 of 12 shots that he faced in the first period.

Goon of the Game
Anthony Archer had 6 hits on the game. There was definitely no one willing to go up against this guy tonight as he was steamrolling everyone around him. Not only that, but he also potted one assist on the powerplay goal late in the first period to tie the game at 1-1.  As a second line winger, Archer brings a unique skillset to the Outlaws lineup as he is always the one that is not afraid to get to the dirty areas as seen with his forechecking which led to their first goal of the game. Anthony Archer currently sits at second in the league for most hits.

Fear the Armada
After starting 2-11-0, the Armada are now on an insane run over the last 10 games with a record of 8-1-1. While their total record doesn't look pretty, it seems that something is finally going right for them as this win against the Outlaws gives them a 7 game win streak as we near the middle of the season. Rookie goalie Ian Venables continues his stellar form the last couple games as he even notched a shutout in their 3-0 win over the Colorado Raptors a couple of days ago. The other rookies including Bischoff, Michaud and Wang are also producing which is rare for rookies as they are often sheltered over the veterans. But, the increase in ice time and confidence from the coaching staff have created what may become a juggernaut going into the rest of the season. The experience they are gaining is immeasurable and we can only hope that they improve even more. If the Armada continue this form then they will be scary come playoff time.

When the Game Got Away

It's a common theme, but teams let games get away from them when they let their discipline get away from them. In the 3rd period, Anaheim scored to take a 2-1 lead just 1:20 into the period. 3 seconds later, Jerry Mander took a tripping penalty. Anchorage capitalized in 30 seconds to tie the game again. That gave Anchorage complete control in the 3rd period, outshooting the Outlaws 15-6. The Armada scored the go-ahead goal 5 and a half minutes after they tied it. 30 seconds later, Mander took another penalty, this time for slashing, and again the Armada capitalized, and made it a 2 goal lead. Anaheim could never recover from the lack of discipline, and lost the game 4-2.

Spencer MacLean's Assist Breakout

If you look at the Armada's team scoring today, you'll see Spencer MacLean @birdwatcher69 smack dab in the middle with 9 goals and 13 assists for 22 points. However, interestingly enough, MacLean's first assist of the season came in this game against the Outlaws.

MacLean was one of his team's top playmakers last season, with 9 goals and 20 assists for 29 points for Anchorage last season. However, while MacLean has already matched last season's total for goals and will likely top it this season, he has 7 more assists to go to match his total helpers from last year.

If you can believe it, MacLean went the first 16 games of the season without an assist before he picked up his first, a secondary, in this game against Anaheim. MacLean made an outlet pass to Jonas Larsen @DaftRaincloud, who headmanned it to Stavros Halkias @Bongo.

Halkia's shot missed the net, but he retrieved his own rebound and buried it to tie the game and give MacLean his first assist of S49. MacLean has since found his playmaking form, adding 12 assists since that one icebreaker against Anaheim in Game 112.

The Old Man and The Sea

It finally looks like the Anchorage Armada are getting out of their basement-dwelling habits and are mounting a comeback - and no game expresses this push like tonight's game against the Anaheim Outlaws, who are starting to dwindle a bit in the standings. Patrick Niederreiter had a respectable game in the first 40 minutes, until it all came crashing down as his PK units seemed overwhelmed by the Armada's relentless assault. In the end, the SMJHL veteran was overtaken by the new blood of the league, as the only rookie starter Ian Venables was able to shut the door and earn his 8th win of the season. A working powerplay, and good goaltending - with these two elements, Anchorage could surprise a few people in the post-season.

Jerry Mander costing Anaheim the game.

The Anchorage Armada went into the third period with a 1-1 score when Nick Connolly from the Outlaws quickly scored the 2-1 for Anaheim. But this only convinced Anchorage to fight back harder. When Jerry Mander tripped his opponent three seconds later he gave the Armada an easy chance to equalize on the powerplay.
After Halkias scored his second of the game, it was Jerry Mander again who had to go to the penalty box for a slashing penalty. And once again the Armada capitalized on the opportunity as they buried the 4-2 aswell. If the penalties could have been avoided, this might have turned out a whole lot differently.

Rookie Performance Spotlight

Armada Augustus Wang Armada
Wang definitely put up the most impressive offensive performance, scoring one goal on the power play about half way through the third period, adding to the promising defencemans already impressive totals.  He played just under 20 minutes in this game as well as playing an important role on both the PP and PK.

Outlaws Jacob Riley Outlaws

The Anaheim rookie defenceman had a strong showing even though the Outlaws ultimately lost the game due to taking some bad penalties. While he was on the ice for two goals against on the powerpaly, he still put up a good showing and even managed to add an assist to his points tally.

Honorable Mention

Armada Samuel Michaud Armada

One assist, +2, 19:16 Minutes Played.

4th Star

Finally, not a game that is not 3-2, as Anchorage got the win beating Anaheim 4-2. I am surprised that Jonas Larsen was not one of the 3 stars this game, so he will get the 4th star award from me today. Larsen finished the game with a 0 for his +/-, however did get 3 assists on the night. Larsen did go to the penalty box for a hooking call which resulted in a powerplay goal for the Outlaws near the end of the first period. Besides that one mistake, Larsen played a pretty spotless game tallying 10 assists on the season now in this win for the Armada.
