Lions Lethbridge Lions vs. Detroit Falcons  Falcons
Game Link

We had a shootout in Detroit tonight as the high flying Falcons took on Lethbridge. This was the second meeting between the teams this season, in the first contest, Detroit crushed the Lions 5-0. Detriot currently sits at the top of the table and seeks to continue to put distance between them and second place Kelowna, while the Lions continue to scrap for position in the tight middle of the table. Nolan McMahon will start in net for the Lions and backup Jeffery Thompson will lead the Falcons out.

First Period: The first several minutes of the game saw both teams feeling the other out, trying to see who would crack first and where. The first goal of the game would come off an incredible individual effort by Lions forward Disisde Dayudie. After collecting the puck in his own zone Dayudie would go coast to coast to put a beautiful shot on net only to be stopped by Thompson, however, Thompson's effort was all for naught as Dayudie quickly collected his own rebound and deposited it in the empty net for his 4th of the year (1-0 Lethbridge). The period was mostly quiet from there as neither goalie was giving anything up. The Lions penalty kill did make a strong showing at the end of the period...this would not be a sign of things to come.
Shots: Lethbridge 10-Detroit 8

Second Period: The second period was where both offensives found their stride, though one more than another. The explosion started at just before 5 minutes into the period. After a courageous shot block by Jakob Hamr, Falcon Travis Bitties fired a strong wrister past McMahon which knotted the game at 1 (1-1). Lethbridge would answer quickly back, however. After a tripping penalty by Austin Roenick, the Lion's powerplay went to work. Right of the faceoff breakout rookie Liam Hutchinson took two quick shots and managed to muscle the second one into the Falcon's net, regaining the lead for Lethbridge less than a minute after they lost it (2-1 Lethbridge). After 5 minutes of relative inactivity Detriot forward Raino Kyllonen won a faceoff in his own zone and sent a breakout to Marc Palicka Jr. who was in on a 2-1 with Josh Driver and after a beautiful feed Driver stashed one which McMahon had no chance at (2-2). Two minutes later Lethbridge would once again retake the lead on a wrap-around from Luca Veccelli for his tenth of the season (3-2 Lethbridge). This would be the last time however that Lethbridge would have the lead, as after this Detriot started to really abuse the young Lions defense. At 14:19 in the period Austin Roenick took a one-timer right off the faceoff which due to a screen in front of the net was not tracked by the Lions netminder and found the back of the net (3-3). It was at this point the Lions lack of discipline would begin to cost them. After tripping and charging penalties left the Lions down 2 men the Falcons powerplay went to work scoring on both sections of the PP. First on a deflection by Khabib Nurmagomedov off a point clapper(4-3 Detroit), then off another deflection, this time by Savoli Tankovic (5-3 Detroit). It was at this point the Lion coaching staff decided McMahon's night was over, while his defense had left him to dry on many of the goals, it is tough to overlook 5 goals on 9 shots so Markus Tegernako would take over for the rest of the night.
Shots: Lethbridge 14- Detriot 9

Third Period: The third period was a story of the Lions briefly having life and then the Falcons taking their hopes away. 4 minutes into the period rookie phenom Liam Hutchinson continued to be red hot as he fired home his second of the night and 14th of the rookie campaign (5-4 Detroit). But several minutes later, after a strong flurry by the Lions, the Falcons got going in their zone, firing a shot of Tegernako which he stopped but the rebound was fired by Savoli Tankovic and deflected by Espen Knutsen Jr. for a goal (6-4 Detroit. The Lions would get life again after a Boruvka Banananak slap shot brought them within one (6-5 Detriot). But they could not get any offense going after that and two late Falcon goals by Satoshi Zizagooney (7-5 Detroit and Josh Driver (8-5 Detroit) sealed their fate.
Shots: Lethbridge 15- Detroit 11

Final:  Falcons Detroit 8- Lethbridge 5  Lions

Postgame: Detroit proved why they are the best in the league today as their offense was firing and their defense and goalie tightened up when they needed to, they will look to keep rolling at Vancouver. The Lions, on the other hand, will need to dust themselves off, both the young defense and goalie McMahon will need to put this behind them if they have are to have any chance against Colorado.

3 Stars:
1 - Satoshi Zizagooney (DET)
2 - Josh Driver (DET)
3 - Khabib Nurmagomedov (DET)

Offensive Explosion
The game between the Lethbridge Lions and the Detroit Falcons featured two of the highest scoring teams in the SMJHL, and the score reflected that.  The Falcons came out on top in an 8-5 race, with offense all around.  The game started with a relatively modest opening period, with just 1 goal scored.  The second period it really picked up, with 7 total goals, 5 of them coming on the Falcons side.  There was an impressive spread as well, with 11 different players scoring goals.  Both Josh Driver of Detroit and Liam Hutchinson of Lethbridge potted 2 goals a piece.

Star of the day
Defenseman Satoshi Zizagooney lead the way offensively for the Falcons, finishing the game with 1 goal and 3 assists for a 4 point effort.  This took his season totals to an impressive 22 points.  Zizagooney lead the team in all situations as well, finishing with the most ice time on the team while being deployed on the top unit for both power play and penalty kill.  The 3rd year player is undoubtedly living up to the potential the Buffalo Stampede saw when he was selected 11th overall in the SHL draft a few seasons ago.  Look for him to continue leading the Falcons in the playoffs.

PK miss
The Lethbridge Lions boast the number 1 ranked penalty kill in the league, but you would not have been able to tell from watching this game.  The Detroit Falcons managed to go 2 for 3 on the powerplay, giving the Lions a minuscule 33.3% on the PK, a far cry from their season average of 82.68%.  The Falcons 2nd ranked powerplay could have attributed to some of the mishaps, but no matter the reason, the Lions will have to shore up their special teams if they want to prove they can shut down a top team and have success going forward in the season.

Rookie Performance Spotlight

The Lion's rookies really put on a show in tonight's game, leaving the newbies on the Detroit squad looking a little dazed. Therefore, all 3 rookies in this particular spotlight will be from the Lethbridge Lion's organisation.

Lions Disisde Dayudie Lions

One of the two big rookie names on the Lion's blueline this season, Dayudie displayed his trademark offensive capability for the entirety of his just under 20 minutes of ice time. He spent over 4 minutes on special teams in this game alone, proving his importance to the team and his role in its success story.

Lions Luca Veccelli Lions

The star rookie forward on the squad, Veccelli had a strong offensive game, scoring a single goal in the span of his 17:34 minutes of ice time. He spent just under 4 minutes of ice time on the special teams in the game and had a strong game in the face-off circle, winning 11 out of his 21 bouts.

Lions Rintarou Okabe Lions

With so many Rookies having great seasons, it's easy to overlook some of the hard working guys that play bottom minutes. Rintarou Okabe is one of those guys. In tonight's game he managed to add an assist to his offensive tally in under 10 minutes of ice time.

(Losing) Player of the Game

Liam Hutchinson (RW) – Liam Hutchinson, assisted by Boruvka Banananak and Cant Eyhkil, scored the Lethbridge Lion's second goal of the night in the second period against the Detroit Falcons. The first was scored by Disisde Dayudie. Hutchinson also scored the opening goal of the third period, assisted by the aforementioned Disiside Dayudie. The only other player to score two goals in this game was the Falcons Josh Driver. Hutchinson had four more shots on goal throughout the game and also managed to lay a hit on Espen Knutsen Jr to make him lose the puck. Despite being good enough that in any other game the Lions would most likely have won, it unfortunately wasn't enough in this 8-5 game against the Falcons.
