WhalersVancouver Whalers vs St. Louis ScarecrowsScarecrows

Game Link

Here we are on day 31 of the sea-son, almost halfway there! Today we’re taking on game 114 between the Vancouver Whalers (8-13-1) and the St. Louis Scarecrows (10-9-3). Vancouver has just recently started to recover from a nine game losing streak, since breaking it they have gone 2-2. Starting us off in net tonight for the Whalers is Kasperi Braulin. He’s got a record of 8-10-1 on the season, playing almost all of the games so far for the Whalers. At the other end of the rink is Marques Brownlee, typically the backup for St. Louis, who is 3-5-2 on the season so far. Will Vancouver be able to get some momentum going this season? Let’s find out.

1st Period

St. Louis gets off to a rocky start in this game. Eight seconds in, Barrett Blackwood takes a shot on goal that gets deflected by Mika Kandinsky, but saved by the Vancouver goalie. This would be the only shot St. Louis gets for the remainder of the period. Sasha Dangelchek takes a penalty for interference, putting them on the penalty kill early. St. Louis kills it off, but a mere two minutes later Vancouver’s Sami Reider takes a sweet pass from Kaspars Claude and lets that puck rip right past the St. Louis netminder for his sixth goal of the season. Just under a minute later, Sami Reider would pick up his second point of the night, an assist on Cullen Gray’s eighth goal of the season. The period would conclude with St. Louis going on the penalty kill three more times, successfully killing it off each time. The score after 1 period is 2-0 Vancouver, shots are 6-1.

2nd Period

St. Louis is again tripping out of the gate on this period with James Ronlain taking a high sticking minor just 4 seconds into the period, they cant seem to get any momentum in this game. At 10:10 into the period Mikas Bieska picks up his third goal of the season off a feed from Kaspars Claude, his second assist of the night, also assisted by Cullen Gray, his second assist of the night. This goal came on yet another penalty from St. Louis as Jakub Bruchevski took a hooking call at 8:57 into the period. The penalty killing has been good from St. Louis, 5 consecutive penalties without a goal, but they were bound to slip up eventually. Just twenty seconds after the last goal, Sami Reider gets his second goal of the night, assisted by Bjorn Leppanen and Mikas Bieska. It was at this point that St. Louis realized something needed to change. Marques Brownlee’s night was over and Shiqa Vitaleivich would come in to finish the game. As the period comes to a close St. Louis is killing off a high sticking double minor taken by Flash Gordon. Down 4-0, getting outshot 14-12, St. Louis would need to dig deep if they want a chance in this game.

3rd Period

This period starts out looking bleak for the St. Louis comeback. Not only does Vancouver’s Joe Ackroyd score during the carried over penalty time from last period, but just 45 seconds after that St. Louis takes another penalty as James Ronlain goes to the box again, this time for holding. The rest of the game would pass by without much incidence, St. Louis and Vancouver would each take another 2 penalties each, but no more goals were scored. Vancouver’s Kasperi Braulin takes the shutout, his second of the season, stopping all 22 shots he faced.

Final Score

Whalers 5 - 0 Scarecrows

Three Stars

First - Sami Reider (VAN - GWG, 2G, 1A)
Second - Cullen Gray (VAN - 1G, 2A)
Third - Kasperi Braulin (VAN - Shutout, 22 saves)

Summary

This was a game where St. Louis failed to gain momentum at any point. Constantly taking penalties and unable to generate any offense. Their penalty killing was pretty good, but when you take eleven penalties in a single game, you’re bound to get punished for it eventually. Kesperi Braulin earns the shutout for Vancouver.

In today's game, Vancouver destroyed St. Louis 5-0 off the back of many hard working players and outstanding performances. Outsides of the 3 stars selected, there were a couple of deserved players for unsung hero, but it should definitely go to Egor Kucherov.

Kucherov finished today's game with 2's all across the board for assists, points, plus/minus, and PIM. With those assists, Egor now has a total of 3 on the year showing that he not only a capable goal scorer but can be a playmaker for Vancouver as well.

Just an interesting tid bit I noticed from the index, St Louis actually outshot Vancouver in this game, 22-21.

Comment 1 - 3 Stars

With the Whalers dominating this game from start to finish, it was unsurprising when the results for the 3 Stars were announced at the end of the night, with the Whalers taking home all of the nightly honours.

First - Sami Reider (VAN - GWG, 2G, 1A)
First star was Sami Reider, who got the Whalers on the board early in the game, and surprisingly, ended up as the GWG. Reider managed to score another, while also showing off a little bit of playmaking, earning an assist as well. All in all, Reider finished with 3 points, 2 goals and 1 assist, as well as a +3.

Second - Cullen Gray (VAN - 1G, 2A)

Second star goes to Cullen Gray, fellow linemate of Sami Reider, and he also had a great showing on the night. Displaying a little more playmaking chops than Reider, Gray earned himself 2 assists with his play, while also showing off some fancy stickwork, scoring a goal for the Whalers. Gray also earned 3 points and finished +3, but with goalscoring a little sexier than playmaking, Gray only got the second star of the night.

Third - Kasperi Braulin (VAN - Shutout, 22 saves)

Braulin showed out on the night, turning aside all 22 shots he faced. interestingly enough, the Crows actually outshot the Whalers on the night. Braulin was a well deserved third star, as he had less of an impact than Gray and Reider, but still did more than his part to win the game.

Comment 2- What great depth you have!

In this game, the Crows were absolutely walloped, taking an absolute beatdown from the fins of the Whalers and never recovering. Surprisingly, it wasn't the Top 6 of the Whalers forwards responsible for this beating, but it was actually mainly their 3rd line. Combining for 6 points and finishing a +9, the Whalers triumvirate couldn't be contained, dominating the Crows up and down, driving play against all opponents, and getting a big win on the board. This line was justly rewarded for their play, earning the first and second stars of the game. Unfortunately, with Braulin getting a shutout on the night, Weiser was unable to get the third and final star for the line, preventing a third line sweep of the Stars of the Night. (150ish)

Comment 3- Revenge Factor

An underlying factor was in play here. Besides the typical SMJHL attributes that Simon T. takes into account, one has to wonder if a previous meeting was still on the minds of Whalers players. The Whalers had made up a little bit for the 9-4 beatdown they suffered from the hands of the Crows by winning their ensuing meeting 3-2. However, justice still wasn't fully served. Coming out firing, the Whalers decided tonight was the night to make up for that embarrassment. Coming in like a tsunami, the Whalers just kept coming back for more and more, steamrolling the Crows into submission each period. The final scoreline was 5-0 for the Whalers, making up the 5 goal loss they suffered back earlier in the season, and making sure everything is balanced in the universe again (140 words)

Rookie Performance Spotlight

Whalers Björn Leppanen  Whalers
We've raved on and on about the Vancouver defencemans before. It's no secret that the writer of this spotlight is a big fan of Leppanen and while we we're disappointed to see a less physical style of play in tonights game, Leppanen managed to add an assist to his offensive production totals in the game, further solidifying his spot as a top draft contender in the S50 draft class.

Scarecrows Yamamoto Mitsuharu  Scarecrows
Mitsuharu is arguably the top rookie in the St Louis organisation and while he didn't manage to get on the board in tonight's game he still made sure his presence was felt in the game. He managed to get 3 shots on goal and 3 hits in his 20:33 minutes of ice time.

Swegs MVP

I'm a broken record, i'm sorry. But if your goalie has a shutout with 20+ shots against you're gonna have to do something extra-ordinary for me to not pick him as the MVP. In this 5-0 game with a couple of 3 point players, i need to look at the stats line and see what they did aside from those 3 points to decide if they did enough to beat out the goalies performance, and they didn't this time, im almost surprised they didnt get more points when all of them played almost 10 minutes of PP each. No hits and no SBs, sorry no MVP. So congratulations Kasperi Braulin, 22 saves for his 9th win of the season! He actually got the 3rd star too, but it shouldve been the 1st.

Swegs sweggy Trivia

This is the fifth game of the season between the two teams, Vancouver won this game big, which is pretty much how the matchup has looked the entire season, with Vancouver taking home 4 of the 5 games. Last game in the series where one of the teams won with five goals or more where on gameday 19, where St Louis got their only win against Vancouver for the season. This was a crazy game where St Lous scored an amazing 9 goals against the Whalers. The other teams has been fairly even, but these two games take the cake, winning with 5 goals is never a fluke.
