News from the Updating World - Blastmeaway - 06-18-2019

In the spirit of trying to show some of what goes on in the updating world of the SHL. Back in S42 @Dude and I developed a Spreadsheet to help fast track updating. While some things have changed from the users perspective, like The Marius Rule. Some things have not changed like updating a whole season’s worth in an update, if you do this please try not to do this during the offseason. The offseason is our busiest time between assisting new users learn the ropes, regression, and 22.80-31.18% of the total updates done over the course of the season.

Prior to S44, the way that updates were process with the updaters looked something like this:

If a player updated only 1-2 stats we would only list those attributes, anything more and we had to list the entire set. The Simmer would then spend their sunday evening/monday morning inputting every single update for every single player.

With the development of the Spreadsheet we now use, the updaters copy your build over from your Player Page into the spreadsheet. Along with that there is a calculator that will calculate how much TPE you have spent on attributes. This will then compare it to the amount of TPE you have actually earned, it matches your Player Page.
As for the Simmer, their workload consists of simply downloading the ‘Ratings Page’, which is what STHS understands, as a Comma-Seperated Values (.csv). They then upload it into STHS for it to process and export as a Rating Pack. The Simmer, then uploads this file once again into STHS and then the Sim is updated with the weekly updates. This is why the IIHF Tournament now has the most recent updated before the start of the tournament. Acording to the former SHL & IIHF Simmer, her workload used to be 15-45 minutes a week depending on the amount of updates. With the new system it dropped to about 2 minutes.

Over my time spent on this site I have learned a tremendous amount about the power of spreadsheets. My main partner in crime at this point is the awesome @LukeTD. Together we have been collecting all sorts of data with the power of this spreadsheet.

Since S44, I have been keeping stats on how many players are being updated, each week and season. Over the last four seasons, 33 weeks, a cast of over 27 different users has process over 7,330 updates. Some of the longest working team members are guys like Tomen (S30-S35, S41-now), Zombiewolf (S36-now). Spartan Gibbles has been with the team since the last week of S45, he has racked up 723 updates in the last two seasons! Hell, even at one point Pingy was an updater, if this noot noot machine can understand it and help others, you can too. After being appointed as Head, after GCool decided to take a break from the site, I appointed ml002 as the Co. ml and Tomen are both absolute role models in the updating community and are also both quick to respond and help anyone with any sort of issue, not necessarily just updating. Coincidentally, they are Co-GMs of Division Rivals, Toronto & Buffalo.

Below in the first group on the left is a breakdown by season at the number of teams, amount of players updated each week, the percent of players updated from the previous week, and lastly a look at the percentage of players updated that week from the whole season. The right three grouping columns these are broken down by difference in teams across those seasons, difference in players updated, percent of players updated in the later season vs the earlier season, and percent of the difference of the total players updated between the two seasons.

Can't tell if this is a serious suggestion or a joke about the last time you tried getting a dev team together lol

Amazing insight on what its like to be on the updating team. I cant speak for everyone but for myself, i can definitely say that your work does not go unnoticed

I have worked in the past in sim leagues (the VHL as a commish and a GM) and now im a GFX grader here. I can see you guys work harder than what ive done in the past and the present

Props to the whole updating team, you do a wonderful job
