S42 PT #4 - The Difference
#76

Kelowna Knights finished to 2nd place in smjhl after good regular season. This was expected before season even started. Knights really wants their 3rd Four Star Cup in a row. Knights strength is that we have 3 strong forward lines, good defense and amazing goalie. Almost every player in top 6 lines have over 30 points, which tells how strong this team really is. other teams may have star players, but in our team every player is star player. The Only minus is that our lower defense lines could be little bit stronger.

In playoffs we will play against in conference finals against Armada or Falcons. The difference between Knights and these other 2 teams is huge. This feels like easy win for Knights. If we are realistic we will probably see knights against Whalers in finals of smjhl. This match wont be easy for either of these 2 teams.

The New England Wolfpack have already made the playoffs, and while many did contribute to reaching this goal, there is one person who obviously pushed us over the edge. That person is undeniably Olsin Fletcher. Fletcher led the league in points as well, showing true dominance this season that helped us big time. A stat that shows how dominate Fletcher was for us is the +24 plus/minus rating. This breakout season is going to help the Wolfpack immensely. Its going to want more people to come to New England, and the upcoming youth players are going to help as well, such as Kristaps Ball and Alex Andani. Fletcher helped show how good this New England team is, and that it will only be better in the coming seasons as well. If Fletcher can keep up this in the coming seasons, New England is going to be a scary team. While the future is bright for the Wolfpack, the present is as well due to the help of Fletcher.

At this point, we've already missed the playoffs. However, we made some changes during the trade deadline with the goal of improving in the future, rather than this season. We were able to make some trades that will be paying off in the next few seasons. The biggest issue we had this season, our poorest season in the past 6 or so seasons, was a lack of chemistry with some of our newer off-season additions. However, since the trade deadline the team began clicking and playing pretty well and we only ended up missing the playoffs by a few points. Next season, once we have some of our younger studs coming up into the fold, we'll definitely be right back at challenging for the Cup. We do have a few players that are in the twilight of their careers, but they're still able to contribute and mentor our younger up-and-comers.

I'd say BUF's success is mostly attributed to 3 key players/lines.
#1 and the one with the most impact is our beloved Goalie Jordin FourFour Jr. without him Buffalo wouldn't be in the playoffs this season. He just had a great season overall carrying the team on his back which will result in some Awards I hope so.
The #2 and #3 players definitely had their share towards the success that Buffalo had this season and I honestly can't say that one unit had a bigger impact than others. For me it's Alexis Metzler who had a great season which will hopefully result in him winning the Stevens Award because in my eyes he had the most complete game as a Defender this season and the other unit I'd like to honor would be Vorkämpfer/Marius/Lavelle line. They had great chemistry this seasons finishing in the top 10 for +/- this season. They carried the Buffalo offense this season when the first line some couldn't get it done. They are without a doubt a huge cornerstone for Buffalo in the future.

Seattle finished sixth in the Western Conference this season. Unfortunately, that was one spot worse than where we finished last season. The good news is that we finished with six more points than we did last season. What went right for us this season was the addition of new offensive weapons, namely Elias Lindstrom and Joseph Lombardi later in the season. Another thing that benefitted us was some of our prospects coming up and having really nice coming out parties. Our two rookies, Ensio Kalju and Kolja Seppanen proved that they’re ready for bigger roles in the future. Unfortunately, where we really faltered was goaltending. Even though Yuma had a great year, it just wasn’t enough to keep up with the rest of the West. Another reason I think that we missed was how tight the Western Conference was. The bottom four teams in this conference (us, Winnipeg, Los Angeles and San Francisco) were battling for that last playoff spot for practically the entire season. There were lots of things to enjoy about the Riot in season 42, however there’s also a lot of room for improvement.

Well the North Stars season came to a disappointing end after finishing on a losing streak and falling out of a playoff position. A number of the losses were single goal losses which A: hurts more and B: shows that there is hope for the team. During the losses the backup goalie did play for 4 games, but by no means was that the reason for the losses. Would a backup keeper with more than 160 tpe help us out, yeah.. but those games were winnable. Now a big part of the reason Toronto finished out side the playoffs has to be the performance of the young defenseman Bob Bergen, after an impressive rookie season you would expect great things from the young Brit. However this wasn't the case, Bergen finished the season with 2 points less than last season, while this isn't a massive issue when you look at other stats you see his defensive game was missing this season, with a massive reduction in shot blocked and a horrible +/- compared to the rest of the team.

Well the biggest negative for the San Francisco Pride was definitely their total bust of a defenseman Jack Tanner who didn't live up to his draft billing so that was a pretty negative influence on the season however in the long run it should be pretty positive for the franchise as the Pride's own pick has the 2nd best odds to win the draft lottery and the team will be making 3 top 5 selections in the upcoming draft. Having so many selections in a stellar class like this one is going to be is invaluable for the long term health of the franchise so really Tanner sinking his team could be construed as a good thing. Hopefully the new selections will be making big contributions on the SHL roster for several seasons before Tanner slips into regression. Also shout out to teammate Dakota Reid who won the Turd Ferguson for the first time this season. Ultimately this was a season that the team knew was going to be rough so we're pretty happy about the way things went down and the outlook for the team going forward.

The Toronto North Stars were in playoff contention for the majority of the season, but a late season slide ultimately saw them fall to 6th in the conference, and seven points out of a playoff spot. I'm not entirely sure what happened. Perhaps the team just ran out of steam, as they finished the regular season with an eight game losing streak. Part of the problem for the North Stars was their depth scoring. While the likes of Chris York and Zander Rhys were their usual dominant selves, some of the role players didn't contribute enough. Kristian Eriksson, the SHL's all-time leading scorer put up a paltry 29 points, his worst offensive ouptut since his sophomore season. While he is definitely getting up there in age, he is still being relied upon by Toronto to put up points, and his performance this season simply wasn't up to par. The rest of the team, however, is young and still improving, and the future is still bright for the North Stars.

The Vancouver Whalers put on an amazing performance in S42, taking first overall in the regular season. A battle until the final stretch, the Whalers came out winning just one more game than the second place Kelowna Knights. Being a team on the rise and as deep as the ocean it was hard to pinpoint just what the main ingredient was in their recipe for success. The line chemistry was explosive, the goal tending was immaculate, and the penalty killers stood their ground all year shutting down even the most lethal of power play units. Taking all of this in to account you still have to hand it to the Vancouver Whalers second line who dominated the league. Comprised of Left Wing David Kastrba, Center Benis Smol, and Right Wing Eriks Skalbergs the trio combined for the most total points over any other line while playing even strength hockey during the regular season. Vancouver's first line wasn't far behind and finished second in scoring. Tells you something about the way this team was built.

How much did draftee Soren Kierkegaard contribute to the Blizzard’s regular season success and seat atop the West? So much so you cannot count the difference. Kierkegaard is so awful that playing him would have sent the team back 20 games, solely being in the fourth line. Lets explain, you know Captain America? Think of the film. Now imagine if you will, the experiment never works, but skinny Steve Rogers is still out there on the battlefield. Let’s say he somehow beats the Red Skull and then gets revived in the ocean, “great, he’s still part of the Avengers” you may think. He still loses to Loki, and instead of being able to stop the Hellicarrier from falling, it’s crashed and dead. Fury is dead, Widow is dead, Hawkeye is dead. Hulk, Stark, Thor and for some ungodly reason Skinny Cap still are alive, and that’s it. Fast forward to the battle of New York, and it’s a massacare. The Avengers die cause shitty Steve is still useless and the rest, and Loki takes over Earth. That’s what Soren Kiekegaard would do for the Blizzard.

The Colorado Raptors went into S42 with expectations set very low. Amidst a rebuild with only seven returning players, the Raptors exceeded expectations by a large margin by not only making the playoffs, but ending up comfortably in third place. There were two big factors in this result; the play of the three returning defensemen and some surprising offensive prowess from a couple of their rookies.

Troy McClure III, Maui and Sachimo Zoidberg Jr. combined for 122 points (24 goals and 98 assists) and a +40 between the trio, with 39 of those points coming on the man advantage. They were expected to carry the load on the back end and all three did that in spades. They all played over 20 minutes a game with Maui being the lowest at 20:36 and Zoidberg Jr. topping ice-time at 22:25, along with big man advantage time and production. McClure carried the physical play as well with 125 hits and 82 blocked shots, Maui chipped in with 68 hits and 77 blocked shots and Zoidberg Jr. came in with only 23 hits but 62 shots blocked.

The other factor was some superb play from the rookie forwards, primarily Gvidas Kazlauskas and Tony Pepperoni. Kazlauskas led the way with 19 goals and 20 assists for 39 points, with a +8 rating and Pepperoni threw up 15 goals and 17 assists for 32 points and a +13 rating. Phillip Winter and Nate Forsberg played along Kazlauskas on the top line and they were a very solid combination for the Raptors.

Overall, a pleasantly surprising season for Colorado and a Cinderella run in the playoffs isn't out of the question for this squad.

For the St. Louis Scarecrows, the regular season comes to a prompt and disappointing end.  Although their roster was completely littered from top to bottom with large amounts talent, they just could not string together enough wins to become a formidable force.  A large part of their ultimate failure was the lack of contribution from SMJHL veterans Daniel Karlsson and Nicholas Falk.  Both considered absolute leaders of the team and maxed out, neither were able to eclipse the 35 point mark and both sported a miserable negative rating for their respective lines.  Falk, now playing with the Renegades, was a dominant force in the pre-season with over 65 points, but only managed 33 points over the course of the regular season.  Karlsson, also playing with the Renegades, was the Scarecrows #1 defender and managed just 27 points and 56 blocked shots, despite leading all defensemen in ice time.

The scarecrows are losing two of their top players heading into S43 and hope the reins can be passed down to the next generation of stars.

The difference for the Platoon this season was that some of the stars other than Wilson were able to put up big points. The bulk of the scoring by the team was between three players this, who all made a huge difference. Wilson had another season similar to expectations, so the big difference lied with the other two. Forsberg had a big break out season scoring 54 points for top on the team. This was a huge help in filling the hole that losing Linna produced. Light was also able to finally crack 50 points for the first time in his career. This was an exciting moment in his career, which also happened to help boost up the team. With the rest of the players all playing up to expectations this these two helped keep the Platoon as a cup contender. Hopefully this difference will translate well into the players, as until last season the Platoon have historically choked.

Quote:Scenario: The regular season is rapidly coming to a close, and many teams’ final standings positions are coming down to the wire.

Written Task: Where do you think you’ll end up? If your team’s place is already determined, what or who made the difference for your team? Was it positive or negative? Must be at least 150 words.

With the season having already ended, I can look at the final standings and give a reflection upon those. I did not really have a clear idea of where the Wolfpack would end this season, but they sure did a fine job getting to where they are now. 59 points is nothing to scoff at and a 26-17-7 record is far from bad. They barely missed out on finishing second in the group ahead of the West Kendall Platoon, who finished with an idential record, but had a better home record, giving them the second place and with that home ice advantage over the wolfpack which they will be facing in the first round of the playoffs. The Wolfpack saw two players who had a bit of a break out season, in Xander Green, but specificly Oisin Fletcher, who finished with 29 goals, 35 assists for a total of 64 points, which gave them the point lead in the league. All in all this was a very positive season for the wolfpack in their first season without vet Raven Silverwing who had retired. Good shit lads.

The Minnesota Chiefs fell back in a big way this season, missing the playoffs for the first time in awhile, and doing so despite a lot of their young players doing way better. The biggest reason was they did not play Garbanzo on the power play like, at all. They also didn't play him on the first defensive pairing until late in the season, when it was already too late. The Chiefs stagnated with Garbanzo on the third pairing, hence their terrible record, but when they brought Garbanzo back up to his rightful place they actually started to play well, and they were on a really good winning streak up until the end of the season, which unfortunately was too late. Hopefully Garbanzo doesn't regress too hard, as the Chiefs are really looking to do better next season. If he does regress really hard, or even retires, then the Chiefs probably won't make the playoffs for another 10 or 20 seasons or so. He was that good.

Alonzo Garbanzo Final Tallies (Among Defensemen):
2nd in Goals (208), All-Time Assists Leader (765)*, All-Time Points Leader (973), 3rd in Hits (2587), All-Time Blocked Shots Leader (1882)*
*All-Time Leader Among All Skaters
