S65 PT #5: Day With the Cup

Player Prompt

When a player gets their day with the cup, there all seem to have a similar journey in mind. They go to their hometown with it to celebrate, or perhaps they spend a day with their families. Whichever option they ultimately select, they all seem to have a common theme; that is, they choose to celebrate their special day with others.

Yannick Svoboda has a much different approach. In his grueling journey through the playoffs, his thoughts invariably drift towards what he'd do with the cup, should he win it. More and more, he is realizing that he'd choose to spend his day with the cup alone. He would take it up to some mountains and reflect on his journey with the cup by his side. The hope from here is that he might form a connection with the cup and he might be more likely to win it again in the future. Either way, Svoboda is a solitary individual and his day with the cup would surely reflect that.

If, in some indeterminate future, Speedwagon were to win the Challenge Cup, that thing is coming home with him to London. First, to Ogre Street, to show the lads that he's finally done something with his life other than beating anyone and everyone who crosses into their back alley. Not to rag too much on them. But to show them that's not all there is to life. And to show his appreciation for their support every step of the way...even the one in which he said farewell. Next, to the hockey academy where it started in London. Next, to the living members of the Joestar family, complete with pictures and a long visit, to show his gratitude to them for the way their forebear, Jonathan, turned his life in a new direction. It may seem like a modern form of gladiator games, but it beats the hell out of what he was doing before. Now, he's getting paid oodles for it, and in a manner that makes him...at least somewhat respectable.

Player Prompt

My day with the cup would involve working to carefully create a mould of the exact shape of the cup. I would then completely ignore the actual cup itself and instead work to make a few different breakable versions. I'd maybe start with creating a replica cup out of chocolate and edible spray paint. If I'm satisfied with the result, I'll then go enjoy a peaceful day with the actual cup before I prepare to hand it back. Handing the cup back would involve taking the chocolate replica and smashing it on a table in front of either the teammate I'm about to hand it off to, or even better, the official cup caretaker. Taking a bite out of the smashed pieces would either cause them to instantly know it's a fake or think it's still the real one and be even more shocked than after the initial prank. The best part about all this is that the mould might be reusable and I can create versions out of different materials for future use.

PLAYER PROMPT

Jonathon Hagan's day with the Challenge Cup would consist of a lot of partying, and a lot of drinking. Just like when his father had the Cup, it would probably be damaged, or at least put in some significant danger of being damaged over the course of the day. The day would probably start with Hagan having breakfast with the Cup, and then funneling beer out of the Cup as he took it out on the lake with him, for some jet skiing, wakeboarding, etc. on the water with the Cup. And that would just be the day time activities with the Cup for Hagan. As night fell, he would grill out with the Cup, but then would host a large party for the Cup, with very many people invited, lots of beer, and all other sorts of things. More drinking from the Cup would ensue, and he would trigger his plot to steal the Cup forever.

Creative Prompt

The wildest day the Challenge cup has ever been through is easily when the Toronto North Stars won it back in season 35 in their home ice. You have to understand that back then since 1993, that fan base didn't have one of their major team won a championship. All the Toronto teams seem cursed to never ever win something again and when the North Stars pulled that unexpected game 7 win, the whole province went nuts. The 20 000 people in attendance all rush towards the ice after the final buzzer, players didn't have the opportunity to celebrate or hold the cup. Security got overwhelmed, the whole barn got in fire, people were barely able to escape alive, unreal stuff. They had to come up with a new trophy the following season, the thing was never seen again after that infamous night. The SHL commissioner announced Toronto would never be allowed again to play in the finals, such a tragic aftermath.

Player Prompt

For his day with the cup, Sven is flying back to Stockholm to party with his mom and childhood friends. There were a lot of doubters when Sven initially entered the SMJHL Draft way back in Season 52 and Sven would be ecstatic to bring the cup back to spite all the haters. It would be particularly great for Sven to bring it back to the school he went to throughout childhood to show all his teachers that yes, he was going to become an SHL player and that yes, he will win the cup someday. Sven is getting towards the tail end of his career and capping off his career with a cup would really propel his case for the Hall of Fame. Sven would definitely be chugging beers out of the cup at every single destination he brought it to. At night, Sven would bring the cup out to the clubs with him and dance around it on the dance floor.

Player Prompt

During his time in the SMJHL Buck has already won 3 4-Star Cups and is currently competing for his 4th. Each time Buck has won it he's brought the Cup back home to Moose Jaw, Sask and has tried to do something different with it each and every time. The first time Buck won it he spent the day going around town letting people see the Cup and have sort of a mini parade, nothing too fancy. In the evening Buck had an autograph session for fans to get a signature and their photo with Buck and the Cup. The second time the Buck won the Cup he decided to be a little more low key with the cup spending the day on his parents farm taking the 4-Star Cup on a ride along in all the different farming equipment showing it off to the animals on the farm as well. The third time that Buck won it he decided to host a charity ball hockey tournament where the winning team would get a chance to lift the cup themselves, have their picture taken with it and donate $25,000 to the charity of their choice.

PLAYER PROMPT - SHL and SMJHL players alike dream of hoisting their championship trophy at the end of the season. But what people often forget is that at some designated point later in the summer-- you'll get to spend your own personal 24 hours with the cup, doing whatever you want. Maybe you've won it before, maybe you've got a chance this season, or maybe you don't. Either way it's fun to imagine, right? Let's go into our mind palaces.

Written Task: What would your player's day with the cup look like? Would it be a wild and crazy whirlwind party around your home town? Is there a coach or a teacher or a parent you'd want to visit? Maybe an important place to your player? Maybe you'd just like to sit next to it on your deck and listen to nature. I don't know! You tell me! What would your player do during their dream day with the cup. (150+ words)

My day with the Cup would be extremely relaxed. I would just bring it home and invite over all my closest family and friends and we would have a party in the backyard. There would be beer, pool, drinking games all with the Cup at the center of the party. We would also have to make every guest chug a drink from the cup. Age doesn’t matter. If you are too young to drink beer, then you get to chug apple juice (or some other kid friendly drink) out of the cup. Everyone invited can’t say no to a quick chug from the cup. It makes it an exciting twist to an otherwise very subdued and relaxed party. Hopefully it would be something that would be exciting for everyone. Luckily, with the way it seems Seattle is trending, while it might not be this year, I am hopeful that this dream will become a reality in no time at all!

Jesper has some unique experience with the Cup. His grandfather Jakub won it three times. His dad Jason won it twice, and his uncle Jax won it once. Ultimately, Jesper has seen that thing a lot and was even the kid sitting in it without knowing any better at one point. When it comes to planning out how to do a day with the cup, it just comes down to what kind of person you are. Jason went all out, having a major golf outing and raising money for local charities to come see the Cup and get your picture with it and him. Jax was a little different, doing just a cookout style meet and greet, enjoying his time in the sun. Jesper isn't sure how he'd go about it, the Cup feels so far away at this point. What he does know is that he'd start the day with a smile on his face, and it would never go away. That's the one constant in every celebration.

GOING DOWN IN STYLE. TOAST4LYFE

My player has been spending the off-seasons in Switzerland since he plays for their national team. Because of this, he is going to take the challenge cup overseas to Switzerland and let all the Swiss see one of their country’s hockey players as a Challenge Cup champion. Hopefully, by showing them this championship, it will inspire them going forward. They might see the Challenge Cup and aim to be like my player. This will help Team Switzerland down the road as might get some superstars out of the country. I feel like the country is just waiting to blow up as a major hockey nation and win some IIHF tournaments. We have been close and I am excited about our future, hopefully a Challenge Cup visit would inspire the young ones and accelerate the process. There’s so much to do with the Challenge Cup, there really isn’t much you can do wrong unless you cheat and take a side street instead of seeing it all with the Cup in hand.

Player prompt:

Julio got his day with the cup as a youngster, and had as raucous of a party as he wanted. But now he's an older player on the way out. He has a self imposed bed time and he knows that he won't live forever. If Julio got a day with the cup this season, he'd make it very family and charity focused. A morning at his hometown rink, letting the youth get excited about it, and buying into the dream of making it to the SHL. Maybe a thank you photo shoot with some local establishments (taking the cup to a fire house or hospital are both classics). The afternoon and evening would be a big BBQ and kickback (a party where I don't black out). Eating some ribs and rubbing barbecue sauce into the Hamilton Steelhawks engravings would give me some joy. Maybe I'm just hungry and tired in real life.

Friedensreich Hundertwasser is a simple man. Obviously he'd take it home to his family, use it as a centerpiece on the dinner table to be looked at and not touched. The extended family would be invited round for traditional Austrian food and all would be allowed to bask in the glory of the cup.
After dinner, naturally Friedensreich Hundertwasser would take the cup down to his basement, put on some incense, light some candles, get some mood lighting and... Perform a ritual to the great Lord using the cup to hold animal blood.
The ritual will grant Hundertwasser with greater strength next season and also bring bountiful harvest to his hometown.
If that wasn't enough the final thing he would do from the cup is drink a big ol cup of wine, tanning a full bottle out of the ginormous cup whilst watching a couple of episodes of X-files and eating chocolate
