Double media for insight on S50 draftees! ***THIS IS ONLY ROUND 1 CAUSE IM TOO LAZY TO WRITE ABOUT TOO MANY DRAFTEES :( ***

I always love to take some time to show some love to the Season 46 SHL draft class, a Reddit draft class that continues to see prospects blossom into superstars and into the future leaders of the SHL. While I personally find myself on the fringes of SHL society, with a bank account consistently in the red due to my inability to find a job (rip) I will just take the time to write some media which is sort of refreshing to do here!

Without further ado and meta discussion about myself aside, let's take a look back on the Season 46 draft class! These skaters are entering YEAR 5 in terms of their regression season in the SHL. We'll see where the top draft picks are now!

S46 Round 1
1. Steelhawks Hamilton Steelhawks - Nikolai Evans
2. Steelhawks Hamilton Steelhawks (VIA San Francisco Pride) - Anastasia O'Koivu
9. Steelhawks Hamilton Steelhawks (VIA Toronto North Stars) - Kalvins Zvejnieks

Nikolai Evans, 898 TPE, Tampa Bay Barracuda
Anastasia O'Koivu, 814 TPE, Tampa Bay Barracuda
Kalvins Zvejnieks, 582 TPE, SMJHL

The #1 and #2 draft picks in the S46 draft class no longer find themselves in Hamilton. Traded to Tampa Bay for a huge haul of picks, Evans and O'Koivu's development has been steady, but imperfect. The two users are undeniable, but Hamilton perhaps feels hard done by seeing these two top picks no longer on their roster altogether even after getting a sizable haul of picks back. After all, I'm not sure if Evans and/or O'Koivu ever played any significant minutes on Hamilton before leaving town. O'Koivu and Evans had decent if not unspectacular seasons with the Barracuda in S49. Meanwhile, Kalvins has simply not panned out as his development has completely stalled in recent months.

S50 Round 1
9. Steelhawks Hamilton Steelhawks (via Tampa Bay Barracuda) - Hariken Urawa

The first of 5 draft picks to convey from Tampa Bay to the Hamilton Steelhawks, Hariken Urawa is a promising winger out of the Colorado Raptors academy. It's intriguing that the Steelhawks chose to go with an offensive forward with this first pick -- they will certainly have their pick of defenders with the future draft picks to replace the duo of Evans and O'Koivu. You had figured that the Steelhawks had drafted their top line on defense for decades to come in Evans and O'Koivu at #1 and #2 in such a prestigious class, but life doesn't always work out the way you think it will.

S46 Round 1
3. Barracuda Tampa Bay Barracuda - Olivier Cloutier
14. Barracuda Tampa Bay Barracuda (VIA Minnesota Chiefs) - Matt Kholin

Olivier Cloutier, 962 TPE, Tampa Bay Barracuda
Matt Kholin, 958 TPE, Tampa Bay Barracuda

We see in retrospect that the Tampa Bay Barracuda now own the #1, #2, and #3 draft picks of the Season 46 draft class, and 4 total first rounders. They did pay a haul of picks for the right to do so, but it's definitely an interesting factoid. Cloutier remains on Tampa Bay's roster and will look to take a step up after an amazing rookie season. Cloutier tallied 12 goals and 20 assists playing on the 2nd line of the Barracuda. Matt Kholin, in his 2nd season with the Barracuda, put up a more than solid 29 points in 50 games of action. With more chemistry with the rest of the Barracuda team, including with Evans and O'Koivu, Cloutier can only improve which is scary for the rest of the league. The Barracuda's triumvirate plus Kholin, who continues to blossom, has the potential to terrorize the rest of the league for the foreseeable future.

The Barracuda had no first rounder for S50, so no analysis here.

S46 Round 1
4. Stampede Buffalo Stampede - Monkey D. Luffy

Monkey D. Luffy, 1055 TPE, Buffalo Stampede

There's no question that the Stampede have an absolute star in the making in Luffy. Luffy's work ethic on and off the ice is practically untouchable and certainly unquestionable. Although Luffy entertained 10x10 offers in free agency, he has re-upped his contract with the Stampede and affirmed his commitment to the future in Buffalo. Luffy looks to be the heir apparent to longtime staple Viktor Marius as the star for Buffalo.

S50 Round 1
6. Stampede Buffalo Stampede (via Minnesota Chiefs) - Augustus Wang

Augustus Wang is a promising 2-way defender from the Anchorage Armada academy. There's no question that the Stampede have a wealth of offensive talent, including second rounder Bobby Sharp and newly acquired second rounder Michael Scarn. Ensuring the defense can stay just as strong as key, and the Stampede addressed the immediate need for the future perfectly by drafting Augustus Wang with their acquired first round pick after trading their first rounder for Scarn.

S46 Round 1
5. Chiefs Minnesota Chiefs (VIA Chicago Syndicate) - Mathias Seger
13. Chiefs Minnesota Chiefs (VIA Texas Renegades) - Jerry Mander

Mathias Seger, 1006 TPE, Minnesota Chiefs
Jerry Mander, 568 TPE, RETIRED

Quite devastating to see that the Chiefs' late 1st rounder has already called it quits on his career after exhausting eligibility in the SMJHL. Nevertheless, it is his decision to respect! Seger has proven to be a great pick for the Chiefs and someone for the organization to build around. I'm sure everyone has heard of the Chiefs' heavy tampering penalty that largely stripped away a good part of their future, beyond draft picks but also the mentality and attitude of the organization. Seger brings light to the end of the long night and it's good to see he's stuck around. Seger put up 5 goals and 17 assists last season, and will look to continue to create for the Chiefs on the ice.

The Chiefs held no picks in the first round of the S50 draft.

S46 Round 1
6. Specters New Orleans Specters - Jimmy Slothface

Jimmy Slothface, 1044 TPE, New Orleans Specters

The Specters got a good one in Slothface. The promising forward put up 23 points in 50 games last season for the Specters, even in a bit of a limited role as the Specters continue to rely on elite offensive talent albeit aging talent in their push for the Challenge Cup. Slothface is expected to finally make the jump into the top 6 rotation for the Specters with Oisin Fletcher making a move to defense to save his aging legs. Look for Slothface to take an enormous leap in his first big opportunity to shine on the Specters.

The Specters held no first round picks in S50. Come on, I want to write more!

S46 Round 1
7. Wolfpack New England Wolfpack (VIA Calgary Dragons) - Perry Morgan
12. Wolfpack New England Wolfpack - Gordie Boomhover
15. Wolfpack New England Wolfpack (VIA Chicago Syndicate, West Kendall Platoon) - Guy Zheng

Perry Morgan, 1029 TPE, New England Wolfpack
Gordie Boomhover, 1042 TPE, New England Wolfpack
Guy Zheng, 1032 TPE, New England Wolfpack

What an absolute hammer of a draft by the Wolfpack front office. Three first rounders, and nailed on all three of them. It's absolutely no surprise to me that the Wolfpack made the Challenge Cup last season when you look at drafting like this. Morgan and Zheng will form the backbone of the Wolfpack defense for seasons to come, while Boomhover is a potent forward having put up 24 points last season. Zheng contributed 21 assists last season, and Morgan matched his output of 21 assists while also banging in 9 goals to Zheng's 7. The Wolfpack are packed with talent, including this trio, and they will certainly be in and around the Challenge Cup for seasons to come even after falling short this past season.

The Wolfpack also held no first rounders in the S50 draft class! What the heck! I guess that's the cost of contending.

S46 Round 1
10. Panthers Los Angeles Panthers -  Borromini Cannellini

Borromini Cannellini, 1068 TPE, Los Angeles Panthers

Cannellini was widely renowned as the best pure skater prospect in the S46 draft class. However, fears that Cannellini planned to test free agency throughout his career due to an aggressive agent led to him falling from #1 all the way down to #10 in the draft. Still, a first round pedigree. The Los Angeles Panthers' gamble on Cannellini has thus far paid off handsomely. Satisfied with the gorgeous Los Angeles climate and the nightlife, Cannellini put up 37 points last season while playing on the 1st line for the Panthers. Cannellini is in an excellent position to continue to excel on the Panthers and he'll soon become the face of the LA franchise as Jon Toner begins to age.

S50 Round 1
7. Panthers Los Angeles Panthers - Disisde Dayudie
8. Panthers Los Angeles Panthers (via West Kendall Platoon) - Vorian Atreides

The Panthers continued to build draft capital and acquire young talent with drafting Dayudie and Atreides with back to back picks in the first round. Dayudie currently ranks as the #1 TPE earner of the S50 class, perhaps mirroring their gamble on the upside that they made on Cannellini. Atreides is a prototypical attacking center and should profile as a potential linemate of the future for Cannellini. The Panthers will hope that this duo can continue to develop and eventually join Cannellini to turn LA back into a hockey town.

S46 Round 1
11. Jets Winnipeg Jets - Nick Brain

Nick Brain, 1027 TPE, Winnipeg Jets

Nick Brain finds himself in an excellent position to excel in his third season upcoming in the SHL. Brain already tallied 16 goals and 22 assists for the Jets last season, and now has surrounded himself with talent like Sophia Bennett and Liam O'Callaghan joining the team. Although talents like Ola Wagstrom and Michael Scarn left via trades for draft capital, the Jets have certainly reloaded and seem ready to seriously compete. Brain has certainly been an excellent value pick for the entire Winnipeg Jets franchise and front office.

S50 Round 1
1. Jets Winnipeg Jets (via Hamilton Steelhawks) - Adam Barron
10. Jets Winnipeg Jets - Ricky Bobby

The Winnipeg Jets held the #1 overall pick in the Season 50 draft. Back in Season 47, the Jets selected Jax Duggan, who promptly bolted to Hamilton as a Restricted Free Agent and the Jets were left unable to match the offer. As compensation, the Jets obtained this pick from Hamilton. Adam Barron is a highly touted defenseman from the Halifax Raiders academy. The Jets will hope that Barron is in it for the future as they look to make this defenseman pick count. Ricky Bobby is a winger on the Carolina Kraken, curiously one of the newest SMJHL teams. Bobby certainly has a role in the future for the Jets to play alongside Nick Brain if his development can continue to progress.

S46 Round 1
16. Dragons Calgary Dragons (VIA Edmonton Blizzard) - Brennan Kennedy Jr.

Brennan Kennedy Jr., 1021 TPE, Calgary Dragons

With the last pick of the first round of the S46 draft, the Calgary Dragons picked up defenseman Brennan Kennedy Jr., who certainly looks one for the future. Although Kennedy Jr. struggled a bit last season, tallying 4 goals and 12 assists on the second line of defense for the Dragons, his upside is immense. And, along with second round defenseman Chico Smeb, the Dragons look well set up to continue to dominate as star forward Mike Izzy begins to enter his twilight years with the team. The Dragons certainly nailed this pick and their front office will especially be pleased to have made this pick count when the pick originally came from their fierce rival Edmonton Blizzard.

S50 Round 1
11. Dragons Calgary Dragons (via West Kendall Platoon, via Winnipeg Jets, via Buffalo Stampede) - Joseph Weston
12. Dragons Calgary Dragons - Alex Rykov

To perhaps add insult to injury to the rest of the league and the West, the Dragons held two first rounders in the S50 draft. Weston is a young skater from the Carolina Kraken academy, as is Alex Rykov. The duo will be thrilled to be joining Calgary together, having already built up a good amount of chemistry having trained together for countless hours in their youth as part of the Kraken. The Dragons definitely have the prospect depth to look down the road to continue to stay in contention for seasons even after this current window ends.

MOVEMENTS

1. Nikolai Evans, 898 TPE, Steelhawks --> Barracuda
2. Anastasia O'Koivu, 814 TPE, Steelhawks --> Barracuda

Absolutely no movement other than these first 2 picks from the huge HAM/TBB trade! Interesting to see, and we'll revisit this draft class again soon! Maybe I'll check out the second round too since it was so packed with talent as well.
