Every EC Team in the SHL and the Season 54 Draft
#1

Double media

It has been a long time since I last wrote an article in the SHL, but I am approaching poverty levels in this league once again, so I am going to take this time to take a look at each and every team in the SHL and see how they addressed needs and holes in their rosters. This article is probably going to end up being super long, so definitely feel free to Ctrl + F and find your team or player and move on lol.

SHL EASTERN CONFERENCE

Baltimore Platoon Platoon - Finished 6th in the Eastern Conference, 21-22-7, 109 GF, 156 GA

We start off looking at the newly relocated Baltimore Platoon, who had a tough season in their inaugural season in the FHM era of the league. The Platoon finished 4 points behind the Manhattan Rage for the final playoff place in the Eastern Conference, led by the firepower of winger Ethan Ross, with 38 points, Nickolas Klaus, with 35 points, and the goal scoring of Brock Nuck, with 32 points.

Expected Top Three Forward Lines:
(S46) Ethan Ross - 1330 TPE, (S45) Nickolas Klaus - 1246 TPE, (S46) Petr Mikulak - 1040 TPE
(S44) Brock Nuck - 1076 TPE, (S46) Yoshimitsu McCloud - 1023 TPE, (S50) Karl Krashwagen - 925 TPE
(S51) Henrik Lundqvist Jr. - 714 TPE, (S41) Dayymo Ralchankinov - 886 TPE, (S51) Indigo Trevino - 584 TPE

Expected Top Two Defense Lines:
(S45) Nat Emerson - 1526 TPE, (S42) Geoff Moore - 1366 TPE
(S41) Kristaps Ball - 972 TPE, (S49) Delver Fudgeson - 885 TPE

Expected Top Goaltender:
(S51) Luca Del Vecchio - 873 TPE

Total: 13,573 TPE

The Platoon have a quite young roster of forwards at first glance, with their youngest Top 6 Forward just entering regression as a S44 player. However, their defense appears in much rougher shape with Nat Emerson about to enter regression soon while mainstays Geoff Moore and Kristpas Ball age rapidly in the new FHM era of builds. That said, I would have expected the Platoon to target a top defenseman early and supplement with some forwards later in the draft.

11. Platoon Baltimore Platoon (Dragons -> Platoon) - Pojo Biscuit
12. Platoon Baltimore Platoon (Stampede -> Platoon) - Patrick Shepherd
42. Platoon Baltimore Platoon (Specters -> Platoon) - Leo Bloomfield

The Platoon immediately addressed their aging defense problem by drafting Biscuit with their first pick in the first round, and then made an exciting move to trade up to the very next pick to select Shepherd, a young center prospect. The Platoon would later add a goaltender later in the 3rd round to supplement Del Vecchio as a backup option.

Buffalo Stampede Stampede - Finished 3rd in the Eastern Conference, 35-14-1, 196 GF, 109 GA

Next, we take a look at the team I am currently on, the Stampede. After having late success in the STHS era with Challenge Cup victories in Season 46 and 48, the Stampede had a decent first season in FHM, led by the firepower of defenseman Poopity Scoop and his incredible 57 point season, Hippo Passamus’ 56 points, and Michael Scarn’s 53 points. Monkey D. Luffy also added 51 points, and legend Viktor Marius had 50 points as the Stampede had five players score over 50 points on the season.

Expected Top Three Forward Lines:
(S46) Monkey D. Luffy - 1752 TPE, (S46) Michael Scarn – 1703 TPE, (S43) Hippo Passamus – 1649 TPE
(S39) Viktor Marius – 1377 TPE, (S46) Bobby Sharp – 1671 TPE, (S46) Matt Kholin – 1619 TPE
(S50) Aron Hernadivic – 1047 TPE, (S50) Rintarou Okabe – 740 TPE, (S47) Nicolaj Muller – 1209 TPE

Expected Top Two Defense Lines:
(S45) Cassius Darrow – 1932 TPE, (S44) Poopity Scoop – 1819 TPE
(S45) Alexander Selich – 1867 TPE, (S50) Augustus Wang – 1033 TPE

Expected Top Goaltender:
(S51) Elizabeth Doyle – 854 TPE

Total: 20,272 TPE

The Stampede boast some of the deepest forward depth in the league, as well as an extremely intimidating first two pairs on their defense. That said, longtime forward mainstays on the Stampede like Viktor Marius and Hippo Passamus are beginning to show signs of decline while the Stampede’s top three defensemen are all near or in regression, so drafting a replacement or two now would make sense.

5. Stampede Buffalo Stampede (Chiefs -> Stampede) - Emilia Bergman
27. Stampede Buffalo Stampede (Dragons -> Stampede) - Thor Odinson
60. Stampede Buffalo Stampede - Will Windsor

The Stampede take defenseman (defensewoman) Emilia Bergman with their first round pick, choosing to reinforce that slightly aging defense core that I mentioned. The Stampede also held pick #12 in the first round, but ended up trading the pick away to the Platoon. Later in the draft, in the middle of the second round, the Stampede surprisingly selected goaltender Thor Odinson. While Elizabeth Doyle certainly holds the key to the franchise for Buffalo for the next decade, the team likely saw a need to replace club legend Cedric Robinson who is retiring after this season as a backup to rotate with Doyle.

Chicago Syndicate syndicate - Finished 5th in the Eastern Conference, 24-24-2, 134 GF, 148 GA

The Chicago Syndicate are the next team up, who missed the playoffs by a hair last season, finishing just three points shy of the Manhattan Rage. The Syndicate were led by Daniel Smeb’s 46 points, and Lallo Selman’s 40 points. Corey Kennedy’s disappointing 24 point season did not deliver to expectations, nor Cameron Carter II’s 37 point season in each of their first seasons in FHM.

Expected Top Three Forward Lines:
(S47) Lallo Selman – 1516 TPE, (S46) Daniel Smeb – 1664 TPE, (S42) Cameron Carter II – 1281 TPE
(S47) Gunnar Soderberg – 1289 TPE, (S47) Martijn Westbroek – 1394 TPE, (S48) Nick Connolly – 1186 TPE
(S43) Jack Kennedy – 1083 TPE, (S50) Ryan Shepard – 1013 TPE, (S45) Nolan Sawchuk – 1296 TPE

Expected Top Two Defense Lines:
(S47) Corey Kennedy – 1573 TPE, (S46) Parker Smeb – 1309 TPE
(S46) Jules Watt – 1102 TPE, (S50) Akira Ren – 1036 TPE

Expected Top Goaltender:
(S46) Tibuk Soonika – 1317 TPE

Total: 18,059 TPE

The Syndicate have a pretty young team, with a particularly solid core of defensemen led by franchise star Corey Kennedy who they will count on to have a better season. The team, however, has some aging forwards in Cameron Carter II and Jack Kennedy to replace in their forward lines. I’d expect them to target mostly forwards in this draft.

7. syndicate Chicago Syndicate - Vitek Vitecek
8. syndicate Chicago Syndicate (pride -> syndicate) - Rotticus Scott
22. syndicate Chicago Syndicate (Platoon -> pride -> syndicate) - Cale Amundsen
23. syndicate Chicago Syndicate (syndicate -> Dragons -> syndicate) - Jean-Uthred Ragnarsson-Tremblay
46. syndicate Chicago Syndicate (Wolfpack -> syndicate) - Justin Keahl
55. syndicate Chicago Syndicate - Renji Atake
71. syndicate Chicago Syndicate - Niccolo Livius

With their back to back picks in the first round, the Syndicate selected two wingers in Vitecek and Scott, immediately addressing their need for forward depth. In fact, in total the Syndicate selected five forwards in this big draft class haul. The Syndicate clearly identified this need, and overwhelmingly elected to address it directly in the draft.

Hamilton Steelhawks Steelhawks - Finished 2nd in the Eastern Conference, 40-7-3, 207 GF, 103 GA

The Steelhawks had an excellent first season in FHM, demonstrating that they are here to stay in the new era as they transitioned to the new sim engine. Although they finished two points shy of the Wolfpack in the regular season for the Presidents’ Trophy, the Steelhawks would get the last laugh as they lifted the Challenge Cup. The team was led by Flacko Lagerfield’s incredible 71 point haul, and the ageless Robert Phelps’ 62 point season.

Expected Top Three Forward Lines:
(S41) Flacko Lagerfield – 1279 TPE, (S47) Aaron Wilson – 1535 TPE, (S35) Robert Phelps – 1130 TPE
(S49) Hugh Jazz – 1113 TPE, (S46) Knute Knurtsson – 1116 TPE, (S47) Dale Miller – 1034 TPE
(S49) Jagger Fouquette – 700 TPE, (S49) Skao Anazibf – 926 TPE, (S51) Al Kayhall – 669 TPE

Expected Top Two Defense Lines:
(S43) Tig Murphy – 1717 TPE, (S48) Gabriel Johnson – 1348 TPE
(S50) Samuel Michaud – 1033 TPE, (S47) Akashi SixNine – 1031 TPE

Expected Top Goaltender:
(S42) Geezus Kryyst – 1458 TPE

Total: 16,089 TPE

From a pure TPE standpoint, the Steelhawks look like they’ll take a step back as their third line takes a bit of a hit from the loss of Sophia Bennett, and the continued regression of veterans Flacko Lagerfield and Robert Phelps. That said, the defense core of the Steelhawks remains quite strong. Improving forward depth seems like an obvious call to make.

16. Steelhawks Hamilton Steelhawks - Simon Takshak
32. Steelhawks Hamilton Steelhawks - Adam Friedland
48. Steelhawks Hamilton Steelhawks - Walito Gretzky

The Steelhawks used the last pick of the first round to select winger Simon Takshak, addressing the need I outlined for forward youth and depth. Next, the Steelhawks selected defenseman Adam Friedland, and wrapped up their draft with forward Walito Gretzky, hoping that Gretzky can live up to his surname.

Manhattan Rage Rage - Finished 4th in the Eastern Conference, 25-22-3, 159 GF, 134 GA

The Rage had a bit of a disappointing transition from STHS to FHM, as the incumbent Challenge Cup holders just about managed to make it into the playoffs before getting knocked out in the first round by the top seeded New England Wolfpack. Led by Luke Thomason’s 57 points, the Rage boast high quality forward depth but a weaker defense.

Expected Top Three Forward Lines:
(S43) Alex Winters – 1452 TPE, (S43) Luke Thomason – 1811 TPE, (S43) Jax Aittokallio – 1662 TPE
(S42) David Kastrba – 1305 TPE, (S47) Austin Roenick – 1364 TPE, (S44) Rainbow Dash – 1078 TPE
(S46) Anastasia O’Koivu – 1065 TPE, (S50) Luca Veccelli – 925 TPE, (S50) Phineas Gold – 962 TPE

Expected Top Two Defense Lines:
(S44) Barret McCarthy – 1674 TPE, (S46) Andrej Doskocil – 1273 TPE
(S46) David Vent – 1207 TPE, (S41) Reginald MacIntyre – 1205 TPE

Expected Top Goaltender:
(S46) Peter Larson – 1379 TPE

Total: 18,362 TPE

While their first line is all regressing at the same pace, the Rage have a promising third line featuring two rising prospects in Veccelli and Gold to graduate into the top line soon enough. Nevertheless, drafting to replace some of these superstars on the first line could be a good idea.

33. Rage Manhattan Rage (Stars -> Rage) - Name Redacted

With their sole pick at the start of the third round, the Rage went ahead and selected Name Redacted, a goaltending prospect. While Larson is not too old, he will enter regression in a couple of seasons so taking a chance on a goaltending prospect could prove to be a wise move with the distant future in mind.

New England Wolfpack Wolfpack - Finished 1st in the Eastern Conference, 42-7-1, 196 GF, 81 GA

The Wolfpack had an amazing inaugural season in FHM, as their vast roster of talent and TPE finally had the opportunity to be put to use in the new sim engine. Led by likely league MVP Ola Wagstrom and his incredible 42 goal, 68 point season, the Wolfpack steamrolled their competition to the top seed in the Eastern Conference. New England’s forward depth was incredible, but they were completely stunned in the Eastern Conference Finals, losing in five games to the Steelhawks.

Expected Top Three Forward Lines:
(S46) Dick Clapper – 1657 TPE, (S44) Ola Wagstrom – 1946 TPE, (S47) Eko van Otter – 1561 TPE
(S39) Anders Christiansen – 1224 TPE, (S47) Slap McShotty – 1465 TPE, (S47) Boris Poroshenko – 1188 TPE
(S49) Jakub Bruchevski – 960 TPE, (S42) Rafe Ulrich – 1064 TPE, (S50) Sasha Dangelchek – 587 TPE

Expected Top Two Defense Lines:
(S43) Rex Kirkby – 1792 TPE, (S46) Guy Zheng – 1652 TPE
(S46) Perry Morgan – 1337 TPE, (S40) Ensio Kalju – 1307 TPE

Expected Top Goaltender:
(S41) Benjamin Blue – 1134 TPE

Total: 18,874 TPE

The Wolfpack take a slight step back from their otherworldly forward depth from last season, as Dangelchek likely joins their third line of forwards and Wagstrom begins to decline slightly. The Wolfpack defense and forward lines are still extremely strong nonetheless, although it seems that they could go best player available in terms of draft targeting.

3. Wolfpack New England Wolfpack (Renegades -> Wolfpack) - Matthew Sawful
24. Wolfpack New England Wolfpack (pride -> Wolfpack) - James LeBlond
38. Wolfpack New England Wolfpack (Platoon -> syndicate -> Wolfpack) - Bobby Bergen

The Wolfpack used the #3 overall pick this season to draft defenseman Matthew Sawful, likely going with the best player available at the time. Sawful will likely slot in as Kirkby begins to truly decline in earnest. Next, the Wolfpack selected defenseman James LeBlond in the second round, who they hope can build some chemistry with Sawful as they develop together. Lastly, with Bergen in the third round, the Wolfpack added a forward prospect with high reward.

Tampa Bay Barracuda Barracuda - Finished 7th in the Eastern Conference, 10-38-2, 98 GF, 197 GA

We arrive now at the Barracuda, who had a tough season entering what appears to be a large scale rebuild for the franchise after they had a decent run of contending at the end of the STHS era. The Barracuda were led by Matt Kholin, who tallied 39 points, but has since been traded to the Stampede. As such, the Barracuda significantly lack firepower on their forward lines.

Expected Top Three Forward Lines:
(S49) Anthony Archer – 907 TPE, (S50) Tom Fiddler – 897 TPE, (S50) James Ronlain – 896 TPE
(S50) Michael Fitted – 855 TPE, (S44) Bernard Freeman – 623 TPE, (S50) Francois Breton – 460 TPE
Unknown, Unknown, Unknown

Expected Top Two Defense Lines:
(S46) Joln DuBolk – 1178 TPE, (S43) Sean Stevenson Jr. – 994 TPE
(S39) Liam O’Callaghan – 833 TPE, (S53) Ambacas Cuddles – 501 TPE

Expected Top Goaltender:
(S43) Johannes Leitner – 976 TPE

Total: 9,120 TPE

This is an extreme shallow, bare bones roster in sore need of reinforcements across the board. While Cuddles provides hope as a future franchise defenseman, the rest of the roster is missing pieces that either need to be filled by inactives or by some rookie prospects who may not be ready yet. Volume and depth is the goal here.

4. Barracuda Tampa Bay Barracuda - Dwight Knight
19. Barracuda Tampa Bay Barracuda - Matthew Forrester
21. Barracuda Tampa Bay Barracuda (Jets -> Barracuda) - Elwulf Jericson
35. Barracuda Tampa Bay Barracuda - Panda Panico
39. Barracuda Tampa Bay Barracuda (syndicate -> Barracuda) - Devin Williams

The Barracuda added a pretty substantial five person draft class, addressing the need for volume across all positions. Dwight Knight is a quality forward who brings superstar level potential, which is sorely needed for the Barracuda and really for all teams now in the FHM era of builds. Forrester, drafted in the early second round, also is a high upside prospect who could pair with Knight one day on the top line of the Barracuda. More work will be needed, but it is a good start for the Barracuda to build on.

Toronto North Stars Stars - Finished 8th in the Eastern Conference, 6-41-3, 84 GF, 255 GA

Lastly, we arrive at the Toronto North Stars, who had an abysmal season that at least was dulled by the low expectations in the first place for the franchise. In the middle of a hard rebuild, the Stars were led by Bobby Lane, who tallied 35 points, while Mika Kandinsky took a step back in the FHM era by notching only 32 points. Shaquille Derisaka notably compiled an incredible 178 PIM last season. Sensational.

Expected Top Three Forward Lines:
(S50) Bobby Lane – 1100 TPE, (S48) Mika Kadinsky – 1324 TPE, (S50) First-Name Last-Name – 658 TPE
(S52) Rhys Pritchard – 686 TPE, (S52) Danny Marston – 596 TPE, (S44) Shaquille Derisaka – 605 TPE
(S49) Jan Zacha – 571 TPE, (S50) Kevin Robinson – 481 TPE, (S53) Taylor Johansson – 467 TPE

Expected Top Two Defense Lines:
(S50) Ursin Zimmermann – 857 TPE, (S50) Daniel Kuster – 648 TPE
(S53) Jack Kanoff – 574 TPE, (S46) Kalevi Karhunen – 621 TPE

Expected Top Goaltender:
(S47) Harry Carpet – 1495 TPE

Total: 10,683 TPE

Goaltending is a huge strength for the Stars, who also boast pretty solid youth across the board along all positions. This team really just needs to stick together and continue to develop, and if that happens they will be a team to watch in the next five seasons. Consolidation of talent to search for a few superstars on the forward line could be good, or if the team wants to look for a superstar to pair with Kanoff that would be ideal.

2. Stars Toronto North Stars - Ryosuke Sato
17. Stars Toronto North Stars - Scoochie Stratton
25. Stars Toronto North Stars (Rage -> Stars) - Alexei Petrikov
41. Stars Toronto North Stars (Rage -> Stars) - Patricia Reichardt
65. Stars Toronto North Stars - Rapid Eagle

The Stars snag a player who they hope to be that superstar defenseman to pair with Kanoff in Ryosuke Sato, who goes 2nd overall in the draft. Sato will hope to build chemistry with Kanoff over time, and if he pans out then the Stars have their top defenseman pairing for the next generation. The Stars selected Stratton with the first pick of the second round, a goalie prospect who realistically could be ready to replace Carpet by the time the Stars are ready to contend in earnest. Definitely a solid pick with their timeline in mind.
