(GRADED) Deep Dive #2 - Detroit Falcons Defensive Core
#1
(This post was last modified: 04-20-2021, 07:29 PM by leafs1997.)

The Detroit Falcons have a wealth of defensive talent on their roster, including several solid SHL prospects, as well as SMJHL veterans. Here's a breakdown.

Wen Baters - S57
S58 Stats: 66 GP, 4 G, 26 A, 30 P, +/- 19, 22 PIM

One of three fourth-year defensemen on the Falcons roster, Baters is the epitome of a two-way defenseman - good at everything, but not great at any singular thing. He has a solid knowledge of how to play in the defensive zone, and his ability to shutdown the offense is good. In the offensive end, Baters can quarterback the unit, or take a shot himself. His biggest drawback is both his shooting accuracy, which is not very good, and agility, as despite his shutdown abilities, he can be evaded by opposing forwards in front of the net at times.

Bjorn Thornsen - S57
S58 Stats: 66 GP, 6 G, 26 A, 32 P, +/- 20, 24 PIM

Another fourth-year defenseman for the Falcons, Thornsen is a more puck-moving, offensive defenseman. He has the ability to make difficult tape-to-tape passes look easy, and has very good hands, especially for a defenseman. At his own end, he's solid, able to breakup opposing attacks and find himself in the right spots to make good defensive plays. His ability to block shots and lay the body are lacking, however, as is his ability to make the right play in the offensive end, despite his otherwise solid offensive ability.

Jimmy Nutcluster - S57
S58 Stats: 66 GP, 8 G, 26 A, 34 P, +/- 23, 26 PIM

The last of the fourth-year defensemen, Nutcluster is a solid two-way defenseman with a lethal shot in the offensive end. He can shoot from range and shoot very accurate, especially for a defenseman. He makes good setup passes and feeds for his teammates to work off of. In his own end, Nutcluster has great defensive IQ and seemingly blocks most shots that come his way when he is on the ice. His main drawback are his hands, as they at times are seemingly made of stone.

Luc Blouin - S58
S58 Stats: 66 GP, 6 G, 24 A, 30 P, +/- 30, 6 PIM

The only third-year defenseman, Blouin is coming off of a solid sophomore season, netting 30 points. He's another two-way defenseman, albeit with his strengths much more apparent than the normal two-way defenseman. In the offensive end, Blouin can really move the puck, and knows where the right play is. Defensively, Blouin finds himself in the right spots to strip the puck right off of an unsuspecting opponent's stick. He's not the best shot blocker or guy to lay the body, but is an overall great 2-way defenseman.

Zak Wilson - S60
S58 Stats: N/A

The only rookie, and the last rostered defenseman (leaving Detroit with only 5 defensemen), Wilson is more a defensive defenseman. His ability to read what the offensive is attempting in his own end is solid, as well as his response to said read. He has a good poke check, able to take the puck right off of opponent's sticks. He's passable offensively as well, with the ability to make good, accurate passes tape-to-tape. His more glaring weaknesses are physical - he has below average acceleration and agility, meaning that anyone that gets a step on him is gone.
