S74 SMJHL Postseason Bonanza
#1

The S74 SMJHL Playoffs have begun, and it is time for Postseason Bonanza!

Wait! What's this?

Here's how PB will work: there are several tasks, each of which is worth varying amounts of TPE for putting in a little effort, for a maximum of 16 possible TPE total. You can mix and match, complete them in any order and do as few or as many as you would like (up to 16 TPE). Recreates, you will find this slightly different than CW

Here's how TPE will be earned:

For every 50 words you write about a prompt, you will earn 1 TPE. That scales on, so 100 words for 2 TPE, 150 words for 3 TPE, etc. If you wanted to 800 words about one prompt, that would be 16 TPE right then and there.

The graphics TPE scale has remained the same.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you can, please after every prompt you write about add a Word Count (ie. 150 words). This will greatly help the PT Team!

ONLY S74 SMJHL ROOKIES (S75 SHL DRAFTEES) CAN EARN TPE FOR Postseason Bonanza TASKS. If you signed after the trade deadline and are going into the S75 SMJHL Draft, this TPE is not for you.

You may claim affiliation from an (one, 1) ISFL, PBE or SSL PT this season for a max of 3 TPE.

Deadline: Sunday, February 4th at 11:59PM PST

Without further ado, here are our prompts!

TEAM PROMPTS

Code:
1. Fan Appreciation Day
Your team is giving back to their supporters by holding a fan appreciation day for one of their games, where the team will hand out a special commemorative item to show thanks for their continued support of the franchise. You have been tasked to design the product to be given out to the attendees (can be a rally towel, foam finger, bobble head, etc.) Write a blurb about the item, including details on during which game was / will be given out.

Code:
2. Looking Towards the Future
As we near the end of S72, the SMJHL draft will be happening soon. Going into next season, what are your team's biggest needs and areas of strength? Do any holes need to be filled with call-ups? Do you have a position that is incredibly stacked? Give us all an overview of your team, from top to bottom.

Code:
3. Secret Plans
It’s never too early to start thinking about how you’re going to gain a competitive edge next season! How is your team going to go the extra mile to get wins next season? Is it a secret training regimen? Sneaky equipment modifications? Booby trapping the visiting teams’ locker room? Anything goes.

Code:
4. Funtimes
You have been designated as the team's official Fun Director! Now, everyone is looking for some sort of fun activity where you all can spend an afternoon or day to chill, hang out and build some team spirit. Especially after a long and stressful season, what are your plans to ensure everyone has a great time?

Code:
5. Superlatives
Every team will always have that really funny/annoying/quirky player and personality. However, usually they can be the ones that really make sure the team gels together nicely. Come up with yearbook style superlatives to describe some of your fellow teammates.

Code:
6. Team History
I know history isn't everyone's favorite thing to discuss, but a team's past can really define its identity, what its known for and who they are in the present. Tell us about your team's past! Have there been any franchise defining moments that are integral to your team or even SHL history? Conversely, is there some interesting tidbit that not many around the league know?

PLAYOFF PROMPTS

Code:
7. Winner Winner Chicken
At the end of the day, what we all really strive for is the Four Star Cup. It takes everyone's best efforts, an unrelenting determination to win and hard work to be able to hoist the glorious trophy. Out of the 12 teams in playoffs, who do you think will win the 4 Star Cup? Are you going for the clear favorites, or the underdogs? Give reasons to justify your prediction.

Code:
8. An Alternate Timeline
If you weren't playing for your current team, which team would you most like to be playing for in the playoffs.  Explain why you chose that team and how you think you'd slot into their roster.  Would your player make a big impact on the team?  Would you improve their chances of winning a cup?

Code:
9. What's in a Name?
A player name is the first of many steps that mark the start of a new SHL career. From meme names, real life references and parodies of hockey players, there are a wonderful assortment of names that can be found throughout the league. Which player(s) have the best name and why?

Code:
10. In the Zone
Some players are excellent in the regular season, however there are a certain few that really elevate their play in the playoffs. The pressure and the thought of winning it all really benefits some, while others just have that natural clutch factor, with a knack of showing up at the right times. Write about players who have been crucial to their team, or players that could be in contention for Playoffs MVP.

Code:
11. A 6 Star Show
Make a dream team of players from any team in the playoffs, with 3 forwards, 2 defenseman and a goalie, and give an explanation for each pick. It could be the best team ever, or alternative maybe the worst?

INDIVIDUAL PROMPTS

Code:
12. On the Radar
Write a pre-draft scout report on your player from the perspective of a journalist covering the prospects of the S75 SHL draft class. What do possible SHL suitors have to be excited (or perhaps wary?) about when it comes to potentially drafting your player?

Code:
13. Superstitious
In the NHL there’s a well known superstition that any team that touches their conference championship trophy won’t win the Stanley Cup. Are there any superstitions like that in the SMJHL playoffs? If so, what are they? Where do they come from? Does your player believe in them? Why or why not?

Code:
14. R&R
It's almost officially the offseason. Whether you just won the cup or didn't even make it past the first round of the playoffs, it's time to take a break and look toward the SHL draft. Tell us how you're spending your time this offseason, whether it be with family or friends.

Code:
15. Charity Drive
Professional hockey players are among the luckiest members of a community, but not everyone is given the same opportunities. As such, many players are expected to give back to the community by volunteering their time and energy off the ice with various charitable organizations. Write about a charity or event that your player helped out with.

Code:
16. Goals
Although your career may still be in its early stages, it's still a great time to think about the future. What are some goals you have for your career, or some personal goals for the site? Are you striving for a HOF induction? Getting a site job?

Code:
17. Feedback
For recreates, how was doing this new version of CW compared to the old one? Was the experience better, or worse? How were the PT changes? For first gens, you can also talk about your experiences with PTs in general too this season!

Code:
18. Milestones - COMING SOON
You will have the opportunity to cover up to 3/16 TPE with milestones relating to your player's performance/accolades during the season. Link your post in the Milestones thread and post your comment in your CW reply to claim. They will come soon!

14. R&R
It’s been a long season for Agate, in her debut in North America. She played a ton of games, practiced even more, and overall has seen a ton of damage to her body. But it feels like good damage, and every time she recovers from something, she feels more capable of handling it better and better the next time. She spends a ton of time trying to rest every aspect of her body. Sometimes that means laying in a dark room in silence, penciled in the middle of the bed, not even under the covers. Sometimes that means making herself a big meal, grabbing a glass of red wine and filling up a nice bath. Sometimes that means going for a 5am run and then having a pretentious green smoothie bowl, that never actually tastes good, and never actually makes a difference, but has a killer placebo effect. Sometimes that means going for a casual skate with her teammates, doing trick shots and low-skating beer-league style scrimmages. And sometimes, that even means going on a shopping spree! Moving to North America without any of her things means redecorating, starting a wardrobe from scratch, and investing in new tools and staples. Something that most days feels like the biggest chore, but some days can be the largest source of rest. There are a lot of ways one can recover from the long hard season, and while they’re all great, there’s nothing quite like playing in the SMJHL, like next season!

16. Goals
Olivija Agate ended the season with 11 goals, 22 assists for 33 points in 66 games. Very easy numbers to calculate ratios for! Hopefully Agate can start pushing towards 20 goals moving forward, and push towards 30-40 assists. Agate insists upon being a strong offensive presence, and while she certainly was no slouch, there is a ton of room left to move upwards. Her main goal however is to remedy her horrific defensive play, conceding 4 goals per 60 minutes, which is just unacceptable for her future. Her unit simply does not suppress shots against enough, nor are they outshooting their opponents by any significant margin. There is a lot room to continue to dominate the shot clock, and actually drive play, tilting the ice in their opponents direction. There was a lot of growth on the team throughout the season, and management will be looking for some of their investments to pay off and have players growing into much larger roles. Agate’s final goal, a bit self-centered perhaps, is to continue to stand above her rival Demir Bellona. Agate got the upper hand this season on a much shallower team, but Agate will need to step up even more to maintain that position as the Kraken continue to improve.

4. Fun Times
The Kraken have decided to give Agate the Fun Director spot for a week over the offseason, and she’s taking them on a camping trip! They all packed their tents, their backpacks and their cars. Agate packs her Subaru up super tight, remembering all of the lessons her parents taught her about packing a ton of stuff in small spaces, a skill she often used on the farm in Latvia. They make their way into the woods, and find a nice spot to lay out all of their goods. They set up and spend the week reading, playing bocce, burning lots of things, eating lots of food and hiking for hours on end, exploring the untouched depths of nature. They make some trips to town, spending a rainy afternoon stocking up on food, hitting the arcade, seeing a movie in a tiny little local movie theatre, and walking through a local art gallery. It can be hard to escape the overwhelming noise that comes with being a professional hockey player, and here, right now, with the team, there is nothing but the laughter of friends enjoying their time together, a strange howling, and silly songs. These are the sorts of memories that the team will remember from their offseasons, and everyone agreed that they would aim to make it an annual thing.

3. Secret Plans
I suppose that by announcing it, it makes it no longer secret, and it probably shouldn’t be a secret at this point anyways, but Agate must round out her game if she hopes to propel herself into a top defender. She’ll be taking the opportunity to focus on her commitment to the team’s defensive systems, and her own chemistry with her possible unit members. Positioning herself better on the ice, making better use of her teammates and reading the fast paced play better are all on the table. We’ll be doing a bit of ice dancing as a team this offseason, getting to know how each other move, spin and use their edges. This will allow us to read our teammates as they move, nailing precise timings and pinpoint passes.

12. On The Radar

Inge Baardsen is an interesting prospect, as we approach the SHL Draft. The dynamic young Norwegian winger has kind of changed his game, from what was expected of him prior to the SMJHL Draft. Whether that is a development of the player due to a change in himself, or due to the system he has adapted to playing in, will be one of the key questions ahead of the draft, for teams that may be interested in the current Regina Elk.

Let’s look at what was said of Baardsen, prior to being drafted into the SMJHL. Baardsen originates from Tromsø, northern Norway, above the Arctic Circle. Interestingly, Baardsen is not the only player representing Tromsø in this draft. Quebec City Cittadelles defenseman Frederik Gronlund also hails from ‘The Paris of the North’. Baardsen made his name as an athletic playmaker, a player who was quick both with and without the puck, a skilled puckhandler and pinpoint passer, with a strong hockey IQ and an eye for how the play was coming together. He also prided himself on being a team player, helping others to get the goals, while obviously chipping in with a few himself. Although appearing quite slight in stature while plying his trade with Tromsø Hockey as a junior, Baardsen was in North America to prep for the SMJHL Draft and take part in scouting interviews etc, and took the chance to use the facilities of the Seattle Argonauts to keep his skills sharp, and it would appear, put on some muscle. Not all SMJHL draftees get the chance to use the facilities of an SHL team, but Baardsen had connections within Seattle. He has stated, however, that this does not indicate a preference for the draft, it was just a great opportunity for him to prepare for his first professional season of hockey.

Baardsen arrived at the SMJHL Draft ready to play anywhere. Sources close to the player had indicated a preference for Regina, as the team stood out to him as one that certainly had the tools to really mount a charge over the next few seasons, and the management had been open about their plans for the franchise. Baardsen got his wish, and was drafted by the Elk in Round 2, 20th overall. As a rookie, Baardsen was not surprised to find himself on the 3rd forward line, where he plied his trade for the season. He saw no significant Special Teams ice time, certainly during the regular season, but put up 30 Points (nicely split into 10 Goals, 20 Assists), averaging just over 13 minutes of ice time over the 66 games of the regular season. What was more surprising, however, was his physical, defensive play. Baardsen had become something of an aggressive forechecker and a player not afraid to mix it in his own defensive zone. Despite his limited on-ice minutes, Baardsen accumulated 130 Hits and blocked 43 shots, as well as adding 22 Takeaways, the majority of which came later in the season, as Baardsen adapted to the pace of hockey in the SMJHL. His regular season number put him close to far more experienced teammates, who had significantly more ice time than Baardsen. The transformation of Inge Baardsen from
quick, skillful playmaker to punishing forechecker is a surprise, given his stature and history of his play style, but if he keeps that up all season and scores more points, he could become an outstanding 2-way player, not afraid to mix it when the opposition is in possession, but deadly when his team has possession. It will be interesting to see where Baardsen ends up, but also the kind of system he will slot into with his ‘big’ club. It will also be interesting to see the evolution of Baardsen as a player in the SMJHL this coming season.

17. Feedback

I really like the new setup of CW here. Trying to pick out CW topics each season to write about quickly became something of a chore, but I kept on like a good soldier, for that sweet TPE. I like the freedom users have to really go to town on a topic that they either feel strongly about or just sparks their creativity. Sometimes, you get in a flow and realise you’ve written 268 words for a prompt where you get 3 TPE for 150 words and that is it, or something like that, and you feel like you have wasted effort in really trying to get your pint across exactly how you wanted it to. Two thumbs up here.

Milestones for 2 TPE (100 words).

12. On the Radar (600 words, 12 TPE)
Herman Ståhl. A 6'2" 185 lbs Goalie from Uppsala, Sweden. Herman started his journey at a local Uppsala team, before moving slightly up north to Falun for continuiation of this journey. A few seasons there with steady improvements had him wanting to try his luck over in North America. He missed the SMJHL draft cutoff by about 2 weeks, so when he declared himself available teams were already filled for the most part. Only two teams came to bat, and one of them pulled the longest straw.

The St. Louis Scarecrows have had a lot of movement around the place. From winning the 4-star cup a couple of seasons back, they have changed their General Manager twice. One of them resigned after the cup win, the other went on sickleave and would not returned. Ahead of this season, a new GM pair stepped forward who were looking to right the ship and slightly nudge the team in the right direction.
The team would not look competitive, and would not have any of their draft picks in the coming draft. A consequence of winning the cup years prior. Herman however, likes a challenge.

Despite joining the St. Louis Scarecrows later in the season, he still managed to put up 35 games for the crows. Sadly, the 7 wins on record wasn't anything to be happy about. A measly 0.884 sv% and a 5.18 GAA really should turn the scouts away from this prospect. But there is something about him. His mental game and his recovery from difficult situations shows a strength not many of his peers possess. Add in his development over the season, where he started out even further in the bottom before working himself up to be an average goalie in what most stats would suggest. The fact is this was a fine rookie season playing on the worst team in the league. His steady improvement, his mental game and his easy going nature in the locker room really should turn heads towards him.

But there are still some weaknesses to his game. His play on the puck, whilst ever improving, is simply poor. His skating is the same, where he can never really challenge a skater or help the team out behind the goal line. This lack of skill will see him drop slightly in the draft, but probably not by much. Herman is aware of this weakness, and will look to improve over the course of the off season.

So what you have is a fully grown goalie with great mental strength and average to good goalie skills for his age, coupled with poor skating and puck handling. He came in late on the worst team in the league and improved himself over the course of a season in a really solid way. 7 wins is low for a goalie, but that was also 7 out of 16. his GAA was at 5.18, but that was actually below the teams average at 5.32. He let in only 127 goals out of 351. Sadly for him, those stats are very likely to become worse.

Now, is Herman Ståhl a 1st round pick? No. There are other, more impressive rookie goalies in the pipe. Throw in the fact that goalies are usually rater lower than skaters, and you have a situation where he can become a really good pickup in the late 2nd or early 3rd. There's also a chance he isn't being picked up at all, because of the goalie logjam that currently persists in the league. I would expect Herman to go around the 35th overall pick.

14. R&R (100 words, 2 TPE)
The season ended before it started. 16 wins and 32 points for the Scarecrows pegged them last place in the league. The SMJHL season might be over, but Herman has other things to look forward to. Namely, the WJC. Herman was named to the Team Rhine as an extra pickup, where he will be a starter. A lot of preparation has been going towards that, trying to get back into match shape while improving his weaknesses on the puck. The rookie goalie is spending most of his off-season time on the ice this time around, realy trying to find his groove.

12. Scouting Report:

Name: Karter Mendenhall

Position: Goalie

Height: 6'5

Weight: 213

Team: Yukon Malamutes

GP: 40
W: 19
L: 12
OTL: 4
SO: 2
SV%: 900
GAA: 3.51

Karter Mendenhall was thrust into the starting role at the age of 18, and took the opportunity and ran with it. In his first season in the SMJHL, he led his team to the playoffs where they were eliminated in the 2nd round to Detroit. Mendenhall has garnered significant interest from scouts all over the SHL, and his performance on the ice has scouts and fans excited.

Mendenhall's agility and reflexes between the pipes are nothing short of impressive. His ability to make acrobatic saves has left players forwards shaking their heads in disbelief. The Yukon Malamutes' netminder has a strong understanding of goalie fundamentals. Mendenhall's positioning is always great, and his ability to read the play allows him to anticipate shots effectively. One of the standout qualities in Mendenhall's game is his mentals. In high-pressure situations, he remains calm and focused, showcasing the poise of a seasoned veteran instead of a draft prospect.

While Mendenhall has displayed brilliance in the crease, there have been instances of inconsistency. Becoming more consistent will be crucial for his transition to the SHL.

Mendenhall has the makings of a goaltender who can be a wall in net for years to come. His athleticism and technicals point to him being a potential franchise goalie.
GPGP
Karter Mendenhall is a noteworthy goaltender prospect in the S75 SHL draft class, to sum up. Although he still has room for improvement, his strengths make him a promising young goalie for teams searching for a long-term solution. When considering Mendenhall for their rosters on draft day, the decision-makers will need to carefully balance the possible rewards against the challenges. Mendenhall is likely to be a late first or high second-round pick.  A young, rebuilding team could benefit by adding him to their prospect pool and signing him later when they are ready ro compete.

13. Superstitious
Ju-gong is by no means a very superstitious individual, thinking that everything will play out as they are meant to, given who has worked the hardest and has the best team work ethic. However, back from their days in playing in the local Busan hockey leagues, he has picked up something of a post-season tradition, something his team would do back before their playoff games back home. Before each game, each player would declare someone or something they are playing in honor of that game. In Busan, they’d each go in turn and take a drink or shot just before the contest. In Quebec it looks a little different, no large group, no alcohol – Just Ju-gong asking one of their defenseman who they’re playing for tonight, telling them back his answer, before having a spray of water to complete the little tradition.

14. R&R
While still in the midst of a chase for a championship, Ju-gong already has a ticket booked back to South Korea for the offseason. While all focus during the day has been on improving with QCC to achieve their goals, it wouldn’t be off to say that a little bit of homesickness has set in. Having never been outside of Korea for more than a few weeks before, this last season has been a bit of an off the ice test as well. While the frequent calls back home are nice, they always occur at the crack of dawn or early into the night due to time zones. Not only that, but the bitter Canadian cold has made the hot and humid climate back home far more appealing than it ever had been before. Sadly the trip back home will be short lived, as Ju-gong has been instructed to be in attendance for the SHL draft.

15. Charity Drive
Coming from an extremely humble home, Ju-gong has perfect attendance on charity events the team has invited him to. From helping sort food donations during the holiday season, to signing game-worn equipment in order to auction off for charitable causes, nothing is too much or too little. This extends well past the public events as well, as having one’s name associated the act is never truly the goal. For the New Years, Ju-gong anonymously donated parts of his paychecks to give bonuses to staff and employees at some of his favorite local restaurants and spots to visit. Given the sudden wealth quickly finding its way into his pockets, Ju-gong is all too happy to share the excess to help those in need.

16. Goals
Obviously the goal with QCC is to keep competing for four-star cups, team achievements are always greater than individual ones, and managing to win a final would be a great reward for such a fun locker room, whether it be this season, or just before the end of this groups run, once would be amazing. If not, having fun and playing good hockey are the next in line, along with potentially earning some success with individual awards as well as the making some noise at the WJC. At the moment, I fully plan to get Ju-gong towards the 2k area in TPE, despite being a goalie and the memes, it increases career longevity and is a rewarding process to pursue. In the SHL, I assume goals will be the same, hopefully starting a lot of games, competing for cups, and having a great time.

17. Feedback
First Gen – I think PT was for the most part good. I enjoy writing prompts and honestly wouldn’t have minded one bit if they were even longer or more in depth. In terms of room for improvement, I’d say clear communication and doing things on schedule would be the only issues. PT’s staying open longer than expected to the point they push back the next is something I noticed and made planning them a bit irksome. But if by chance they were meant to go past the deadlines, just knowing that that’s part of the plan would be nice. It felt reliable, but rather unpredictable when things would actually happen. That said, I greatly appreciate all staff efforts to managing everything, and would like to pass along thanks to all the teams that are trying to juggle such a large project!

16. I hope the SHL scouts read this because I'm going all out baby. I want to hit 2k TPE on another player, and I believe it should be a lot easier this time around than it was 5 years ago when I started this journey. 2k TPE is the baseline for this player, I don't see a way for me to not reach it, especially considering I'm sitting on 113 millions that will set this player for life so I won't have any issues with training whatsoever. The second easiest goal to reach would be 1k played games. That would be a little over 15 seasons in the league. My first player played exactly 15 seasons in the SHL but unfortunately played through various changes in the league and so only his 6 last seasons were played at 66 games a season. This time around, things seem more stable so I believe I could play for another 15 seasons at 66 games a season to reach my goal. The ultimate games played goal would be to be the last player standing of my draft class. This is something that I had wanted to do with my original player but life got in the way. Ultimately the burnout due to simming derailed my plans but I believe that since I no longer have to sim, I can reach these 2 goals. However, I have more in mind for this recreate. While not reaching the above goals would probably mean a failure in my mind, the latter goals are out of my control but I will do my best to reach them. A second Hall of Fame caliber player on the backend would be something special. 1k points as a defenseman would be insane. As of this writing, 18 defensemen currently have 1k games played or more, and 5 more are within a season or 2 to reach the goal. The all time points leader on the backend has 973 points, so my goal to reach 1k points might be a tad too hard to reach... I remember Alonzo Garbanzo in the STHS days and he was a machine. Nobody in the FHM era comes close to him, so while the 1k games played goal is doable, there is probably no way for me to reach 1k points. Finally, I've recently been hired as the head portal data so that's one job that'll help me stay sustained in cash to buy all my training but as I said before, my bank will be plenty enough to max earn on this player. No need for me to look for sim jobs again Smile 439 words

17. It's been nearly 4 years since I've had to do any tasks and championship weeks so I was a little apprehensive when I recreated, I wasn't sure if I would enjoy doing tasks again or not, considering I'm not very much a good writer but I was pleasantly surprised. I will say that I like that the SHL gives you two options when writing about a task but from glancing at theirs quickly, I found ours in the SMJHL to be easier to write about. Also the need to write to earn TPE kicked it pretty early on so I was always excited to see new tasks drop and find ways to write about them. I can't really talk about PT changes as I wasn't really aware that anything changed since it's been 5 years since I've been in the SMJHL but I've liked the experience so far. As for this Championship Week, well, again I can't really compare it to anything as I don't have any memories of doing CW in the SMJHL, but I'm writing this task first and looking at the various options to write about it's really encouraging and helpful for people that don't have inspiration like myself. Lots of various topics about our own players or teams. I don't know what it was previously but this makes CW less intimidating to write about in my opinion. I also really like that TPE earned scales as we write more about a specific task. Sometimes you really want to talk about a specific thing but the rules kind of limit you but I like this one. 269 words

2. Looking Towards the Future (3 TPE)
As we near the end of S72, the SMJHL draft will be happening soon. Going into next season, what are your team's biggest needs and areas of strength? Do any holes need to be filled with call-ups? Do you have a position that is incredibly stacked? Give us all an overview of your team, from top to bottom.

The St. Louis Scarecrows mortgaged their future to win the season 72 SMJHL Championship, and this created a large issue for the future teams. Left with a lack of draft capital, it has created a significant skill gap between the top line and the rest of the lines. While having the fourth overall pick in the last draft, in the upcoming draft the earliest pick that they have is in the 4th round. It will be important for the Scarecrows to be active on the waiver wire and try to get as many active players as possible. Now, this leaves a very large weight on the shoulders of some of the most recent draft picks to be top earners and for them to carry the Scarecrows if they do intend to compete soon. The major holes to fill are the ones that require active players in general, so get as many as they can the future will look bright for them!

3. Secret Plans (3 TPE)
It’s never too early to start thinking about how you’re going to gain a competitive edge next season! How is your team going to go the extra mile to get wins next season? Is it a secret training regimen? Sneaky equipment modifications? Booby trapping the visiting teams’ locker room? Anything goes.

Going into the next season, I want to the take the next step in my player’s development and become the true number one center that the Scarecrows had in mind when they drafted me fourth overall. This will require intense training to not only focus on my strengths, but to also improve my weaknesses. Next, I will do a better job of learning my opponents and evaluating scouting reports before every game better. I do think a large part of getting a win is done on the ice, however if you can research and learn about your opponent you are that much more likely to perform better on the ice and know what their next move will be. I think that this will be an important skill to learn not only for this upcoming SMJHL season, but also into my SHL career. Also, I will begin to involve my teammates more into this exercise.

6. Team History (5 TPE)

The St Louis Scarecrows franchise is one that has had a great amount of success, with multiple dynasties taking place. Going back to the season 40s is what I believe was the best decade of performance from any team in the history of the SMJHL. There were 5 championships won in 10 seasons, with the first 3 happening back-to-back to back, and then a few seasons later, the Scarecrows won back-to-back again, just falling short of another three peats. Many players for this decade have gone on to have very successful careers in the SHL and even some have reached Hall of Fame status. This feat is something that will never be matched and will continue to be looked at, as how great a dynasty can be in the SMJHL. Every single day that a current or past player has walked into the locker room they are constantly reminded of the season 40 teams and what they did for the franchise. They symbolize the ability to not only win, but to also keep winning and retooling while being competitive every single season in their dynasty run. Now often we see teams sell their future to win or get the chance to win a championship, while these season 40 teams were able to keep most of their draft capital to keep rebuilding their prospect stock. I don’t ever think there will be another three peats again, or even a team that comes close to winning 5 championships in a 10-season window.

12. On the Radar (2 TPE)
Write a pre-draft scout report on your player from the perspective of a journalist covering the prospects of the S75 SHL draft class. What do possible SHL suitors have to be excited (or perhaps wary?) about when it comes to potentially drafting your player?

Being the fourth overall pick in the SMJHL has given me high expectations both in the SMJHL and then also in the SHL. My player has developed an outstanding ability to make plays in tight situations and is on the right track to be a complete two-way player. The SHL is an amazing league, and it would be honored to be able to be drafted and be a part of any great organizations. I think I may want to be drafted by a team that is in the middle of their rebuild, so I can grow with similar aged players, and we all enter the SHL at the same time, to take over the league together. A rewarding rebuild is a priceless experience that every player may not want, but some do.

1. Fan Appreciation Day

Your team is giving back to their supporters by holding a fan
appreciation day for one of their games, where the team will hand out a
special commemorative item to show thanks for their continued support of
the franchise. You have been tasked to design the product to be given
out to the attendees (can be a rally towel, foam finger, bobble head,
etc.) Write a blurb about the item, including details on during which
game was / will be given out.

Wow! What an honor for Anchorage to select Muon Collider to be the one to help and decide the item to give to the fans on fan appreciation day! Honeslty, I'm surprised, as a relative newcomer to the Armada, that I'd be selected over either of our fantastic GMs, well... the one fantastic GM or also Gabe, but also that some of the more seasoned, successful, or experienced players weren't selected to take a hand in this. Perhaps someone in the Human Resources department noticed that Muon has a particularly successful sense of style. Anyway, if Muon is to design a product for fan appreciation day, it need to cover a few things. First of all, it needs to really pop. I don't like things like this that give out simple pens, or notepads, or stress balls. No, Muon would want to give the fans something really, nice, something worth keeping, and something they can show off and say that they are proud that they went to fan appreciation day and they got this thing. Another requirement is that it has to be a something that really represents Anchorage, hopefully both as a franchise, and as a team, and the city itself. It needs to resonate with the fans, and show that the team appreciates them, not just as people that come and buy tickets and hot dogs and over priced beers, but as people of the city, that come out every night and support the team and everything that we do for them. Thirdly, it can't be too expensive. Now I know this might contradict the first point, but hear me out. I want it to be something that is not a cheap piece of garbage, but I also want it to be something that can be economical enough that we can really let all the fans in, and no one that takes the time out of their day to make it to fan appreciation day is left empty handed. The fans come out to support the team and the least that we can do is to give them something worthwhile to remember the team and the day when they leave and go back to their lives. So, putting all that together, and I think really the answer is a full on swag bag. First off, the bag does not need to be anything too special, since it's just the thing that will hold the cool stuff, something simple, obviously branded with the team logo should suffice. Then, inside the bag we will put a few things. First off, a Muon Collider bobble head (certainly you did not think that I would leave myself out of the bag I am designing, did you?) Second off, an Armada pen, and not just any pen, I want it to be a good, metal clicky astronaut pen, the kind that can write upside down with. They never look much cooler, but it's always fun to say to your friends, "Hey, I have one of those pens the astronauts use that can write upside down!" See? It's the little things, they go a long way with the fans. Then I think to round it all out, you add two little things that can be made cheap and will really help to fill out the bag. First a T-shirt in our colors, so that the fans can come and fill the stadium in our colors, that always makes for a cool scene. Secondly, a team towel for them to wave, when Muon is slapping passes left and right.

2. Team needs are a tricky question to answer for the Reigna Elk, particularly because our S74 SMJHL (i.e. S75 SHL class) draft was incredibly deep due to our number and quality of picks. We had six picks, at least half of which were in the first couple of rounds of the draft, and every single one of them is over 250 TPE at time of writing. And there’s no shortage of positions among this large draft class – the class includes two goalies, two wings, and two centers. You might think this makes defense the obvious choice for the Elk, and it’s certainly a priority – but the team also has an S74 class with three defensemen. It’s fair to note Guy Incognito, Mac Turner, and Philippe Le Bel are all players at ~425 TPA that may be called up. But the team is only likely to lose Incognito and possibly Mac Turner given their current >650 TPE. You could make an argument, then, that a defender and a winger would be meaningful and important replacements while holding on centers as Beanman Jr, Stoica, and Panda are nowhere near being called up and there’s absolutely no need to have three goalies on a single roster.  What ownership/the GM does with the draft selections thereafter would be icing on the cake: go ahead and get a third center, maybe get a sixth defender (i.e. a second defender for the draft), and everything else is to replace any inactive players. Many of the players will advance up by one line or so, particularly the rapidly growing S75 class.

[264]

12. SCOUTING REPORT FOR VIOLET STOICA, SWEDEN
OFFENSE: The Elk want Stoica go play with a bit more detail in the neutral and offensive zones.  Shows good overall vision when the puck is in her possession but doesn’t see the net itself very well. Has trouble screening for her teammates, which is troublesome when she herself does not shoot aggressively. When attempting to shoot does show good accuracy and reasonable range. Creates extremely well and seeks out passing lanes for open shots for her wingers and when playing with two-way defensemen. Brilliant young counter attacker but when given time and even numbers primarily functions as a simple shooter and good passer.
DEFENSE: Stoica’s defense, oddly, is her element. Not typical for young players attempting to run center. Grindy defender who is excellent at dispossessing her opponents. Management has seen this and placed Stoica, understandably, on PK lines and is extremely disciplined with high IQ when the puck is coming to the defensive ice. Only had 18 penalty minutes all season and over 35 takeaways. Also serves as the initiator for offense from the deep defensive ice with pinpoint passing out of dangerous situations. Excellent freshman season at even strength, needs to continue to refine composure when short-handed.
INTANGIBLES & SUMMARY: Crafty, physical player who can grind out shifts along the wall when needed, can be relied on in key defensive scenarios. Hard to prognosticate final potential, could see 2C with obvious defensive/counter-attacking upside, not fully established. Unlikely to be a true 1C unless we see a lot of development in the next couple of seasons. Smart, net-positive player.

[267; total 511 so far]

16. I want my career to be just slightly better than my first player’s (Emilia Bergman). She won a defenseman of the year award, but as I started regressing I stopped earning just about completely, which probably healthily took her out of HoF contention in addition to a lack of titles (1x only, early in career). I don’t have enough time to do a site job based on what I’ve seen, and I would worry about not doing a good enough job to keep my job pay based on the number of infractions I’ve seen for rules I haven’t previously thought about. In an ideal world I would love a HoF induction, but I would certainly settle for at least one WJC and/or IIHF (heja Sverige!) title and as many SHL championships as are possible. Regardless, I’ll continue earning my points and being a good little center or whatever is demanded of my career.

I think the design choice here is obvious if you think about it a little. Were the Berserkers and we're here to fight, to defend our honor and to all around kick your ass. Every team has a 'rally towel' or gives out a puck but we do things different up here. To that end I would design a foam two headed broadaxe just like the Berserkers in the days of yore would use in their battles. The head of the axe would have faux twine lines drawn onto it and look sharp as an axe would. On the handle, which would be brown like, you know, an axe handle will have the signatures of all of the Berserkers on it in stitched on in gold. Season ticket holders would get an actual two headed broadaxe with dulled blades and signed in sharpie by each member of the Berserkers and placed inside of a case.

Newfoundland and Labrador is home to some of the most beautiful scenery and stunning glaciers and mountains on the face of this planet of ours. So first thing I would do is organize a team hike to see the sunrise at Cape Spear which is the first sunrise in North America. Next on the itinerary is a trip to see whales and icebergs, something that this area has plenty of and is well known for. Honestly, everyone should go see these majestic creatures and massive blocks of ice. Next on our trip would be a stop to meet some "actual" berserkers at the L’Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site. This site, the first landing site of Vikings in the new world is a great way to connect our team and its namesake to the history we strive to keep alive. Maybe we'll even split the team up and take part in a traditional Viking battle in traditional garb. I could see Slowpoke and I really getting into it.

Lastly is a stop at Jellybean Row to meet our fans, take some pictures and get a great team dinner after a fun day out and about in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Write a pre-draft scout report on your player from the perspective of a journalist covering the prospects of the S75 SHL draft class. What do possible SHL suitors have to be excited (or perhaps wary?) about when it comes to potentially drafting your player?

Prospect Report: Eric Vanderberg Jr.
Height: 6'5
Weight: 235lbs
DoB: April 17th 2006
Shoots: R
SMJHL Team: Newfoundland Berserkers
Family History: Son of Buffalo Defender Eric Vanderberg

Pros: Vanderberg Jr grew up learning the game with the tutelage of his father who spent 9 years in the SHL. Unlike his father, Vanderberg Jr plays a strong two way game with above average passing skills which are reflected in his 28 assist, 31 point freshman season for Newfoundland. His 57 takeaways to 7 giveaways reflects a strong ability to hold and move the puck into the offensive zone and to play aggressively but not so much so that his team is worse off when he is on the ice. Vanderberg Jr spent most of his first season on the top pairing for Newfoundland where he found a great mentor and playing partner in Ondrej von Stoodrick whose play Vanderberg complements well. If drafted by the SHL, teams who look to use his services would be served well to place him on a pairing with an OFD or TWD on the first or second pairing as he looks to develop into a serviceable top six defender.

Cons: Despite playing on the top line with von Stoodrick, Vanderberg still possessed an average DGR which sits among the lower three defensemen in Newfoundland's pipeline. While a concern, it is not something to be overly worried about as he is still developing but SHL teams looking for a SHL Ready Now defender in Vanderberg Jr may consider steering clear. Teams looking for a defenseman who is a 'shoot first' player may also consider steering clear as his shot total is nearly the lowest on the team at 111. Player is also not one of the 'tougher' on the defensive corps, losing the only fight he took part in in the S74 season. Despite the faults, I believe there is nothing that can't be solved with development.

While my player and his father were lucky enough to be able to play the sport they love and be paid for it, his grandparents served in the military. Multiple members of the Vanderberg family served in the armed forces and drove home that there is always a cost, often times paid in blood, for the freedom that we get to enjoy today. With that in mind, my player decided to volunteer his time to two charities that mean a lot to him. In Canada he spent some time with Wounded Warriors Canada and VETS Canada which both work to help transition Veterans to civilian life and give them the tools they need to succeed. In the US, he worked with the Fisher House which gives housing, food and a shoulder to families who are traveling with their Veteran as they get medical care or who may be heading into hospice. He wishes he can do more, but he will never not give to or respond to a request for help from a Veteran charity.

+3 for milestones claimed.

Prompt 2 (257 words, 5 tpe) - I look at Colorado, a team currently in the finals, who are losing only a couple of inactive players to age this season, and I think we don't need a heck of a lot. In a draft you always want to pick up the stars of tomorrow, but right now we're smack in our window. We've got a great chance to win it all for the next 3 or 4 seasons, so more than anything we probably want impact guys. If you could point to any weakness for us it's likely on our defensive end. We love scoring but we've had a hard time slowing down opponents this season. So if we're looking to fill positions that could contribute quickly it'd likely be some new up and coming defenders that can assist the guys that we have in shutting down the game in our own end. We may also be looking for our next big goalie-- someone that Pitts can mentor during their last few seasons with the squad. I guess what I'm getting at is that I don't see a ton of positional need for the Raptors at the moment. What we need is hungry young guys that can take up the mantle and keep this train rolling as our current squad ages out in 2-3 seasons time. If we don't want to hit a downward trajectory/rebuild after this window, then we gotta have a never ending stream of talent moving in, getting mentored, and then turning around and doing the same down the line.

Prompt 4 (224 words, 4 tpe) - As the newly minted Ambassador of Fun I'll be mandating high speed internet cubicles be installed on team busses and planes that allow us to do World of Warcraft raids together in our off time. This serves dual purposes as both mandatory fun, and team building exercises. If we can learn to work together in Azeroth, we can learn to work together on the rink. You might think "Playing World of Wacraft and hockey all day? How could you have any more fun?" well dear reader we're going to have a little bit more fun by serving the community. Yes, we will also be taking weekly trips to the highways of Denver where we'll be picking up trash and shaking hands with community members. This might not seem fun, but it actually is. It's fun to have a sense of civic duty, and it's fun to get to know your neighbours. A well rounded individual makes for a great hockey player, and you always have to remember where you came from. No big headedness or egos here, we're picking up trash so that we remember how blessed we are to play hockey at a high level like this. You're going to be a part of the community whether you like it or not, comrade. It will be fun, whether you like it or not!

Prompt 7 (161 words, 3 tpe) - I'd be being a pretty silly goose if I didn't say that Colorado has a good chance of winning this one. The team is really vibing right now, we're on a huge hot streak, and we're all out there looking out for eachother. This is a team through and through that's having fun and might just bag a championship while they're at it. Coaching, offense, defense, goaltending, our fans-- everything this season is clicking like magic. Our strength all year has been goal scoring and we're still seeing that through the playoffs and through these grinds of series'. Hell we qualified for the finals in an 8-4 win. Maine is a damn good team and they sure weren't going to roll over and let us advance, so to pot 8 in that game just speaks wonders of our offense. If we can keep that rolling it's going to be mighty hard for Detroit to put a stop to the S74 Raptors.

Prompt 12 (77 words, 1 tpe) - I think Pinli is a great pick for both his locker room presence and his excellent rookie showing with the Rapors. 46 points and nearly 30 goals in his first ever professional season is nothing to sneeze at, and it shows a determination and willingness to get into the hard areas of the rink even while being undersized. As Pinli gets stronger and faster with age, he's going to be a formidible offensive force on the ice.

TPE Earned: 16/16
