The S74 SMJHL draft had a lot of hype leading up to it, with a big mix of recreates, as well as some bright new faces in the league. We’re going to take a look at the top 5 picks in this draft to see where they landed, and also how they’re doing so far this season.

1OA Quebec City Citadelles - Anna Skovgaard (258 TPE, tied for #3)
One of the least surprising first overall picks in league history, Skovgaard goes to the Citadelles, a team with which their user has a long history. So far, they’ve lived up to their billing as they rank 3rd in the class in TPE, only 3 behind the class leader. Unfortunately, if they wanted ice time, the Norweigan center went to the wrong team, as the already stacked Quebec City club has played them the second least time on the team. They’ve managed to make good use of it though, with 40 points in 46 games and a solid 52.5% faceoff win rate.

2OA St. Louis Scarecrows (via CAR)- Alexa Johansen (256 TPE, #7)
Manifesting themselves to the second overall spot, the St. Louis Scarecrows traded up to get their top target by dangling a bevy of picks in front of the Carolina Kracken. Thus far, their investment in Johansen has paid off as they are 256 TPE, which puts them #7 in the class, but only 5 off the class leader. Johansen hasn’t seen a lot of ice time and the Crows are in a rebuild, but she is tied for 2nd on the team in goals for the St. Louis team.

3OA Kelowna Knights - Jennifer Huh (258 TPE, tied for #3)
The third pick, Jennifer Huh, saw themselves headed to Kelowna to play for the Knights, who are currently in the 12th place spot in the J. Huh is currently 258, which puts them into a 3-way tie for 3rd place in the class, and 3 behind the leader. While Huh has seen more ice time than some of the other rookies, the struggling Knights aren’t seeing as much production overall and that has translated to Huh with an unfortunate -26 +/- and 28 points in 47 games.

4OA Great Falls Grizzlies - James Howlett (248 TPE, #14)
With the fourth overall pick, the Great Falls Grizzlies selected Canadian center James Howlett.
With 248 TPE, Howlett has fallen a bit behind the class leaders and is ranked 14. Despite being 13 TPE off the lead, Howlett has been having a successful season, with 40 points in 45 games, and an incredible 57.6% faceoff win rate. The Grizzlies, currently in 5th place in the J, are definitely feeling the positive effects of having Howlett on the ice.

5OA Regina Elk - Tank Sharksy (236 TPE, #33)
With the 5th overall pick, the Regina Elk grabbed Tank Sharksy, a center hailing from the hockey capital of Amarillo, TX?? But, hold that thought, they immediately traded Sharksy to the Vancouver Whalers for the 6th overall pick and next seasons R3 pick. Sharksy has also fallen a bit off of the TPE train, with only 236, which places him #33 in TPE. Also unfortunately, the Whalers are dead last in the J this season and as a result Sharksy has struggled on the ice with a -38 +/- and only 22 points in 47 games for the Vancouver team.
