SMJHL Playoff PT
#1

This year I have decided to do things a little differently for the SMJHL Playoffs. There will be no predictions this year. Instead we have this PT. It will be similar to the old Championship Week of the SHL except it is for the SMJHL rookies only. If this goes well then we will continue to use it for the future. There will be plenty of Capped and Uncapped TPE available in this PT. Anyone who wants to earn full marks will be required to do a mix of writing, research, and grafx. I am aware that not everyone is a photoshop master so as long as you show some effort you're not going to lose marks.

Each task will have 2 available uncapped TPE to earn. This means you could earn a total of 5 capped and 10 uncapped TPE.

[Your Tasks]

Task #1 - Written - 250 word minimum - 1 Capped TPE + Uncapped available for exceptional work
Break down the regular season series between two teams that are facing eachother in the playoffs.

Task #4 - Grafx - Must include 2 goalie renders - 1 Capped TPE + Uncapped available for exceptional work
Compare two goalies who are playing eachother in a playoff series.

Task #5(This is not a prediction. Wait until the finals to complete this task) - Finals - Written or Grafx - Written must be 500 words, Grafx must include at least 3 player renders - 1 Capped TPE + Uncapped available for exceptional work
Written: Write an in depth break down of the finals. Look at how the teams played eachother during the season, who each teams top performers are, and what will make or break the series for each team.
Grafx: Use your creativity to create something specific to the finals. Some examples may be a championship banner, a program for the series, or a couple flyers advertising the series.

Would the capped TPE go towards this season or would it count towards next seasons PT cap?

Just want to make sure for those who are at the PT cap and if they are just going to be doing this for uncapped.

This goes towards this seasons cap. That's why I made 10 uncapped available

Task #1 - Written
It was tough sledding for the Prince George Firebirds this year, but even tougher when having to face the Kelowna Knights. Things won't get easier as they are on course to battle the Okanagan foes in the first round of the SMJHL Playoffs. During the season these two teams battled hard and still have one remaining game on the schedule against each other. The funny thing is that Prince George is 3-2 currently in the head-to-head matchup between these two squads. Prince George has been terrible this year and the fact they are leading that regular seasons series is flat out astonishing. The scoring is very balanced as the Firebirds lead the scoring 15-14 in goals over the Knights. If the Firebirds are going to want any shot in this series they have to keep it close like they've been doing. Prince George lost two key players at the trade deadline, so they will need to have other players stepping up in a series between these two. The Kelowna first line came on late and made this series closer in the end, which is something they will look at have going in a playoffs series as well. Not to be outdone though, the Prince George Firebirds first line also provided them a spark down the stretch.

Goaltending isn't something that has been exceptionally great in the regular season series, but it something to talk about. Both goalies gave up and average of close to 3 goals per game in the series. If both teams want a shot at winning it might come down to who's puck stopper is on their game and hot.

Task #3 - Written
Well the Prince George Firebirds can only hope that their early draft pick Jaxson Reynolds can come out of nowhere and spark the team. Reynolds has largely been a disappointment thus far and some are wondering if he really justified being an earlier pick in the the past SMJHL draft. Reynolds has nine goals to date and has also added a pedestrian four assists to tag along that number. Jaxson doesn't really provide much in the defensive zone as he rarely blocks shots or hits his opponent, however there is one stat where he has been a blessing in disguise. Jaxson Reynolds leads the Firebirds with a +7 rating and that bodes well for his Corsi stats and ability to stay on the ice in late game situations in the future. Reynolds isn't as flashy as he was coming out of his WHL team in Everett, but he still can give us some signs of potential game-changing ability.

The Firebirds hope that if they are looking for an uplifting moment, they can turn to Reynolds to come out of nowhere and do just that. One thing that still baffles SHL scouts is how this prospect got the bump to the first line during the year. Reynolds was underperforming and management figured they would slap him on the first line to compete against SMJHL veterans. It was a poor move by management and it really stated Reynolds growth. If coaching and management can figure it out sooner rather than later, this player might show up big time in the playoffs.

Task 1: Written - 523 Words

In a playoff series that is sure to impress, the President’s Trophy winning Montreal Impact are taking on the last place St. Louis Scarecrows. Montreal won the season series by a tally of seven games to three. That isn’t too surprising a stat line, however, because the Impact did a lot of winning this season, setting the SMJHL record for most points in a season, with 70. They are looking to continue their winning ways when they play the Scarecrows.

When the Scarecrows were at home, home field advantage was nonexistent, as the Impact won four out of five games. In one of those meetings early in the season, goaltender Robert Andersson recorded a shutout, stopping all sixteen shots to come his way. Sixteen may not sound like much, but goals are always plentiful in this league, and the St. Louis side was not really known to bolster a strong offensive assault. In that game, and in most of the teams’ meetings, the Scarecrows could not seem to keep themselves away from the penalty box.

When the Impact played in Montreal, it was pretty much more of the same. Early in the season, many teams took advantage of St. Louis’ weak defensive corps, and the Impact were one of those teams. On the seventh day of the season, the Impact defeated the ‘Crows by the score of seven to three, what many would call a “blowout” in the sport of hockey. Michael Gerrard, Adam Falk, and Michael Burch all had monster games in that contest, and those three players would be the leaders for the team for a large part of the season.

The top skaters for St. Louis are John Wick and Ryan King. Neither one had a stellar point year, but who could fault them? They did their best to try to propel an otherwise stuttering offense. On the blue line, Chris Crutchfield is definitely one of the more exciting rookies to watch. This guy is relatively inexperienced, but once he found his footing midway through the season he has also produced somewhat of a double sided game, playing well both on D and on the attack. Starting goalie Lee Bowden was 12-28, but he didn’t have much around him, so the record is not totally indicative of what he is capable of.

On Montreal’s side, the top skaters are the “Three Mikes”; Michael Burch, Michael Gerrard and Mikelis Grundmanis. Gerrard’s shot coupled with Grundmanis’ slick passing is enough to make anybody want to watch this Impact offense. Aside from his offensive game, Mikelis Grundmanis is also probably their top defenseman, excelling in both sides of skating. Montreal has what many consider to be the best goaltending in the league, Robert Andersson leads the charge, he anchored the net down for this record-setting team during the season. But he isn’t the only capable face back there, as rookie Matt Lewis-Flood has impressed during his short time and would be ready if needed in a potential sticky playoff situation.

This Montreal/St Louis clash certainly has the makings of a fun series. Will the champs roll? Or will we see an upset special?

Task 3: Written - 423 Words

It is not every day that rookies steal the spotlight in a hockey playoff series, but it is certainly more likely in a league in which rookies seem to always steal the show. That league is the SMJHL. And the player that I think will have a big series will actually not be my own player, Matt Lewis-Flood. Do I think MLF could shut down any team in net and lead us to victory? Yes. But we already have someone doing that, Robert Andersson, who shut teams down all season. My pick to break out in this season’s playoffs is none other than Hannu Hamalainen. This gritty young forward only tallied thirteen points in fifty games this season, but to me, the playoffs are just like a new season anyways. Hamalainen would most likely not be everyone’s first choice for a break out contender, but I have played with this guy all season, and he is one of the most dedicated players on the Montreal Impact. I think if anyone is capable of scoring some surprise points this playoffs, it’s him.

On the defensive end, I will select another rookie. And that is the potential number one overall draft choice in the upcoming draft, Lord Vader. This kid broke on to the scene with one of the most intense work ethics out there. He currently leads all eligible draft candidates in training points earned, and that speaks to his level of dedication to both the Impact franchise and to himself as a player. He did have 21 assists this campaign, with 5 goals, making for a total of 26 points. Not a bad offensive year for a blue-liner known for his defensive prowess. A playoffs where he breaks out would certainly make for solidification of his draft stock. Vader will have to make it count, because we already know there will be plenty of eyes watching him and evaluating his every skill.

As for goalies, Matt Lewis-Flood probably won’t get much of a chance to impress everyone this playoffs, but if he was ever needed in an emergency situation, he had already told the media he would be ready to step in. I firmly believe that is, indeed the case. He also stated not to worry, for the Montreal Impact will be back into a high seed next season with Matt Lewis-Flood as the go-to goalie!

I certainly think that all the players I mentioned above are ready to step up and bring the cup to Montreal, the city of success!

Task 1-
Vancouver Whalers vs Colorado Mammoths

Vancouver Record
Vancouver Whalers finished the year with a record of 25-21-4 which was good enough for 3rd in the West and 54 total points. The team scored 155 goals and allowed 177 which was most in the West.

Offence
The Whalers had 3 players reach 40 points with an extra 2 break 30. That doesn't sound very good on the surface but they also had 8 players break 20 points. The offence was really spread out this season and it seemed to work for the most part. Patrick McEichel scored 22 goals which led the Whalers and he also assisted on 21 for 43 points. Bernie Sanders was the other forward to hit 40 points as he scored 19 goals and assisted on 21 for 40 points. These two players will be the offensive linchpins going forward.

Defence
Montel Vontavius Porter and Cody Black led the way on defence. Both of these players played like Andrei Markov and Sheldon Souray during the 2007-2008 years with MVP playing Markov to Black's Souray. Cody Black had the most points out of the two with 13 goals and 29 assists for 42 points which was 1 point of the team lead. MVP on the other hand was no slouch as he scored 6 goals while assisting on 27 for 33 points. If Vancouver has any hope to pull off the mini upset here, Black and MVP will have to keep on leading the way offensively and defensively.

Goalie
The man between the pipes is Lukas Berger. He started 44 games this year going 20-18-3 with a very dismal 0.858 save percentage. The save percentage was last in all SMJHL Goalies and he will have to step his game up if Vancouver has any hopes at all in moving past the Mammoths.

Colorado Record
Colorado finished the year 2nd in the West with a record of 27-18-5 for 59 points.

Offence
Colorado had 5 players break 40 points and a further 2 break 30 points. The offence was well spread out as 10 players had more than 20 points. Leading the offence was Tony Pellegrino, Charlie Conway and Potato Chips. This trio of forward were the bane of many defences this year and will be leaned on heavily again to get through the 1st round of the payoffs. All three players had point totals of 42, 41 and 41 respectively. Tony was the sniper (23 goals, 19 assists), Potato was the assist man (13 goals, 28 assists) and Charlie was a mix of both (15 goals and 26 assists).

Defence
The man who led the team in points was none other than defenceman Kristoffer Ruud. He scored 5 goals while assisting on 40 for 45 points. He also blocked 60 shots on the year which led the team. He is very good at both ends of the rink. Don't sleep on his defence partner in Alexander Wolff who scored 10 goals and assisted on 30 for 40 points. He also blocked 51 shots while laying the body with 101 hits. These two paired with Tony, Potato and Charlie form one of the best lines in the SMJHL and the whole Vancouver team should key in on them if they want to have any chance of moving forward.

Goalie
Austin Lemieux was the number 1 goalie for Colorado this year. He played in 42 posting a 24-14-4 record with a 0.878 save percentage and a 2.85 goals against average. These were very good numbers and if he can just be good Colorado have a chance because Berger has just been plain bad.

Regular Season Series
Game 1 - Colorado 5 - Vancouver 2
Game 2 - Colorado 4 - Vancouver 3 (SO)
Game 3 - Vancouver 5 - Colorado 4 (SO)
Game 4 - Vancouver 5 - Colorado 3
Game 5 - Colorado 5 - Vancouver 2
Game 6 - Colorado 6 - Vancouver 4

Colorado won the season series with a 4-1-1 record while outscoring Vancouver 27-21. I predict this series to go the full 7 games simply because it good for the game of hockey and good for the SHL.

Task 3 -

Goalie of the Kelowna Knights, Christoffer Bjornsson has just led his team to the SMJHL finals. He however will have to be better if he wants to lead his team to the championship.

In the 1st game of the playoffs he shutout the PG Firebirds by making 11 saves. In game 2 the team lost in Overtime while he let in 4 goals on 18 shots for 14 saves. Basically the same workload but a very different result. In game 3, Kelowna returned the favour by winning 5-4. Bjornsson made 28 saves on 32 shots. Both of these totals were playoff highs. In game 4, Bjornsson got pulled after allowed 4 goals on 12 shots which meant he only made 8 saves in just under 30 minutes of game time. In game 5, Bjornsson made 16 saves on 19 shots which is ok and his team still managed to win. Finally in game 6, Kelowna was able to put the Firebirds away with a 3-2 win. Bjornsson made 18 saves on 20 shots. So that puts the series total at 95 saves on 112 shots for a 0.848 save percentage and a 2.83 goals against average. Not the numbers from a number one that you'd like but it got the job done.

Like the last playoff series, Bjornsson started the series off the right way for the Knights with a 4-2 win in favour of the Knights. He made 24 saves on 26 shots for an impressive win. In game 2, it was much of the same as Bjornsson seemed to get over the early playoff scare as his team won 3-1 and he made 29 saves on 30 shots. Vancouver looked like they would never solve Bjornsson as he had made another masterful performance in game 3 stopping 29 of 31 shots. Game 4 it all fell apart for Bjornsson although it went to 3 overtimes. He stopped 28 of 35 shots in a game they lost 7-6 in the 3rd overtime. In game 5, Bjornsson was still shook from game 4 as he let in 4 goals on 7 shots for only 3 saves. The Knights lost that game 4-3. However much like the last series Bjornsson stopped 18 of 20 shots in the series clinching game. For the series he has made 131 saves on 149 shots for a 0.879 save percentage.

For the playoffs he has made a total of 226 saves on 261 shots for a playoff save percentage of 0.866. Its not the greats but if shuts the door like in games 1-3 in the vancouver series he should be set for the finals. Because he just needs to steal a few games, Kelowna's potent offence will do the rest.

Task #2

Task #3

A silent hero from within the depths of the Montreal Impact’s third line is projected to emerge as the team’s unlikely hero during their upcoming playoff run. Who could this be you may ask? Well it’s none other than the white and blue centerman, Hannu Hamalainen.

Hannu currently plays alongside, Leo Yakimov and Dane Rowe on the Montreal Impact’s third line centerman spot. Through the regular season he boasts 5 goals and 8 assists for 13 points in 50 regular season games.

Through the end of the regular season, Hamalainen showed vast improvement in his defensive ability and overall demeanour on the ice. This progress should carry over into the “Finnish Phenom’s" playoff matchups. Before we get into his future playoff projections, let’s analyze his past statistics even further.

Game 200: MTL vs. DET

This game ended up going to Detroit in an extremely close overtime victory. The shots on net were almost dead even between the two franchises, but the difference maker and ultimately what kept Montreal’s scoring alive was Hannu’s playmaking ability. In the first period alone, Hamalainen assisted Leo Yakimov TWICE and only 3 minutes apart. He went out of the game as a +2 player and won 56% of his face-offs in his 11 minutes played.

Game 189: MTL vs. DET

Another game versus Detroit, another game where Hannu Hamalainen shines under the radar. This matchup was also a close one and ended up seeing the shootout. Again, without Hamalainen’s work on the ice, this game would have gone the other way. It’s 11 minutes into the third and the Montreal Impact are struggling to tie up the game, Detroit leads by one. Hamalainen to Rowe, Rowe to Vader and in it goes. The play that tied the game and ensured Montreal another point in the standings all starts with Hannu’s amazing offensive mind. He comes out of this game not only with a game tying goal but an unreal 78% face-off percentage in under 10 minutes played.

Game 177: MTL vs. HAL

Are we starting to see a pattern here yet? We’ve proven the Finlander can setup his team mates, but another weapon in his arsenal not to be overlooked is his scoring ability. This game ended up becoming a blowout victory for Montreal, but if Hannu hadn’t given his team momentum after their first lead at 2-1, who knows what would have happened. This time Yakima and Vader return the playmaking favours by assisting Hamalainen at 11:37 of the second. In the end Hannu comes out with an amazing goal and still keeping his face-off percentage above 50 in 12 minutes of ice time.

We see above that Montreal Impact’s Hannu Hamalainen has always been a key, unthanked tool in the team’s success. The playoffs will be no different, only this time we hope to see his name called as one of the 3 stars of the game. We project Mr. Hamalainen to have 4 goals and 8 assists, winning 61% of his draws over the course of his franchise’s run for the 4 star cup.

Task 1. - 268 words

Montreal vs St. Louis

The first round playoffs will set the presidents trophy winner Montreal, against the 8th, last place St. Louis in a series that will surely excite you. These two teams have faced off all season, having battled each other to catch an early upper hand in the season and eventually square face to eliminate one another to advance farther in the eastern conference playoffs. Even though St. Louis placed last, they have beaten Montreal a few times and will be looking to do so again.

Montreal will have the home ice advantage throughout round one and have 1 win, 2 losses, and 2 shootout wins on home territory. They've combined a total of 17 goals and 13 goals against in the five meetings with St. Louis visiting. St. Louis will have to hope they can take a game or two away from Montreal, as they have 27 goals with 34 goals against throughout the whole season and record 3 wins, 3 losses, and 4 shootout losses. If anything, they'll have doubt if any one of the seven games will lead to an overtime.

St. Louis does have the advantage when comparison to the special units come into play. They're 23.40% on the powerplay as Montreal has 18.75% and also 81.25% on Penalty Kill where Montreal has 76.60%. It may be a little more but you still have to add the factors of this. Hopefully Montreal does whatever they can to stay away from bad penalties.

Even though Montreal is a powerhouse, anything can happen in a blink of an eye, changing the course of fate. If St. Louis does succeed in eliminating Montreal, it will be a total upset to fans yet again.

Task 3. - 512 words

When we think about hero's inside our head, we think of standing up for justice when its needed, risking his or her own life to achieve something miraculous, or has the rapper atmosphere says " taught us that a hero ain't nothing but a field trip, naw". In hockey however, there's many hero's you could label in different categories and are not always the hero of every single game, nor are they even mentioned at some points for their body, mind, and soul in important aspects of hockey. The credibility to go out every night and give it your all, knowing that every hit could shatter a play, every faceoff can generate an offensive play, every shot blocked allows the goalie to make one less possible save, or every save can rob players of their morale. These are the true hero's of hockey and need to be recognized and thanked for their contribution to the whole of the teams essences.

Dane Rowe is a hero on Montreal and will continue to be during the playoffs. He played half the season on second line and the other half being a depth player on third line. He ended the season with 9 goal and 17 assists (3 goals and 5 assists from the PP unit) and was on penalty kill for most of the season.

Being a playmaker offensively and defensively is no easy task. Before creation, I saw the most common build was a pure offensive player and I wanted to make one but knew a utility build might be a better first time choice. Rowe plays his role on his team, not producing a large amount of one specific stat, but rather try to be average on an all around scale. Whatever situation my player crosses, I wanted him to be useful and contribute, whether it be a simply face off, or scoring the winning goal.

To point out one person on the team and say he's going to be a hero in the playoffs is all about perspective on what you think a hero is. Dane Rowe is going to be one whether you agree or not. His linemates are going to be the hero's for playing along side him and picking up responsibility when he makes a mistake. His fellow teammates who he has never played with are hero's for playing their role on the team when he's tired and needs rest. The GMs are hero's for taking time to manage a minor league when they have players in the SHL. Finally the managers on this site are the true hero's that allow us to have so much fun and opportunity to play this game we love. My point is that my player will be a hero in is unique way. If you have a problem with that then your self centered and conceited.

Task 4. [Image: gIr3D89.jpg]

Task 5. - 945 words

As the 26th Season winded down to an end, We knew also this magical time in the playoffs must come to a conclusion as two teams are facing off to prove themselves worthy of the Four Star Cup. Its a long road to round three and not always does the top dog from the regular season prevail, Nor does the hungry underdog give up the fight to become the unexpected Champs from a struggling play all year long. The pride and glory is too much for any team to not envision themselves bringing it home to the many who place faith in them time and time again. These two teams have made it into the finals and are batting through blood and sweat to claim thier right to show the SMJHL why they deserve it.

For the Kelowna Knights, they are the returning Champions of Season 25 and are looking to gain their 7th and 2nd time, back to back championship titles. Season 2 and 3 was the last time they won back to back and they have the chance to do it again against Halifax. Throughout the season they went an even 3-3, winning once in a shootout, and had 14 goals well winning and 23 through 6 games. In the 3rd meeting the Knights blew out Halifax 6-2. The 5th meeting was a tight game between them but the Knights won the game in shootout 5-4. The final meeting was another win for the Knights as they scored 2 quick goals in the 1st and took the last game 3-1 to even out the wins against Halifax throughout the season.

In their second season since being formed in the SMJHL, The Halifax Raiders are a young founded team without much history. They made it to the 2nd round of the playoffs last year taking St. Louis easily 4-1 in the 1st round and fighting Montreal
in the 2nd but losing in game 7. They had 12 goals well winning against Kelowna and 19 in 6 games. Halifax took the 1st game by a close margerine 3-2. In the 2nd meeting Halifax was down 4-3 going into the 3rd but managed to nail 2 quick goals
to ride them into a regulation win 5-4. In the 4th meeting Halifax was up 3-1 going into the 3rd but gave up 2 to send the game into a shooutout, they won the game 4-3.

Goalies - Christoffer Bjornsson 28-8-8

Halifax
Ignant Ogorodnikov has been uping his game in the playoffs. Despite not making the list of top performers in the regular season, Rewarding Halifax with 15 goals and 23 assists for 38 points, He has been lighting up his potential in the 12 games during the playoffs. Hes top point leader for his team with 15 points (6 goals, 9 assists) and only 1 behind the leader for both goals and assists, Hes also sitting at a +6 for his line and has the chance to be a huge teammate. I believe if Halifax do defeat Kelowna for the cup, it will be because of this guy stepping up his game. Only if he keeps it up against the Knights, He should be praised with graditude from the Raiders.

Kelowna
I had a hard time picking between Mainio Makinen and Alphonse Oduya. They both have 15 points in 12 games but in the end, I had to go with Alphonse Oduyafor being the top performer in the playoffs. He currently has 6 goals, 9 assists, 15 points, and +7 in the P/M department. Coming off a regular season of 16 goals and 24 assists for 40 points, He is generating enough force to be a top performer in the playoffs and might stay course til the end. I believe he will be the go to guy to finish Halifax for good.

Make or Break
Kelowna's goal against in the regular season was the 3rd in the league (145) and had 15 less goals then Halifax (160). Depending on how well the goalies are during the playoffs, This will be the main factor that plays in the winning role of the team. They may not be a top performer throughout the games against each other but making one less save can be devastating to morale. Well everyone is doing their part on offence or defence, The goalie is to be heavily relied on should they lose focus and make a mistake. The winner of the cup will be decided by which goalie has the better night
in net and if the defence can help them out by cutting chances from the other team offensively. Brett Broadway and Christoffer Bjornsson are tied at 8-2-2 and are around the same in every other stat but Broadway has a better GGA at 2.56 where Bjornsson has 2.94. Both have played 12 games and having an edge on this stat compares them with how consistent they are bringing their "A" game. With 4 to 7 more games just to figure out the make or break factor in this years playoffs, It is certainly a nervous time to be a goalie in the final round and we'll see who stays calm
to bring home the cup soon enough.

St. Louis vs Montreal

The worst against the best. The St. Louis Scarecrows finished the season with an SMJHL worst record at 15-24-11, good for 41 points. Meanwhile, the Montreal Impact finished as the best team in the SMJHL with a record of 33-13-4, good for 70 points. Although the regular season standings were quite different for these teams, their head to head matchups were actually quite close.

In the 10 games played between the two teams, both the Scarecrows and Impact won three games each in regulation. Where the difference occurred was in the shootouts. In the shootouts, the Impact absolutely dominated as they beat the Scarecrows four times out of four.

The Impact outscored the Scarecrows in the regular season by a margin of 34-27. The Scarecrows actually had more wins in Montreal than they did in St. Louis. The Scarecrows won two games in Montreal compared to one at home.

Michael Burch was the top scorer for the Impact this season. He had 19 goals and 31 assists for 50 points. This was good for a point per game. John Wick was the leading scorer for St. Louis with 38 points, 12 less than Burch. Wick had 19 goals and 19 assists for 38 points.

Robert Andersson, the starting goaltender for Montreal, had a great record this season at 28-11-4. Andersson was fourth in the SMJHL with a .875 save percentage. He was third in the league with a goals against average of 2.69. The starting goalie for the Scarecrows, Lee Bowden, finished with a record of 12-20-8. He was fifth in the league with a save percentage of .874 sixth in the league with a goals against average of 2.96.

This series, despite the vast difference in regular season records, will be a good, hard fought battle no matter who wins. The goaltending matchup is very even, which should make for exciting, low scoring affairs. The Impact will be heavily favored, but the Scarecrows are primed to make it interesting either way.

Task #3-365 words
The player that is going to breakout in the playoffs is a player that plays for the St. Louis Scarecrows. He was a mid season trade coming from Prince George. This player also had 0 points during the entire regular season. Lastly, this player is a face off master. The player that I am talking about of course, is Alexander Charlyb'y.

Charlyb'y did not have a lot of expectations for this season. Everyone knew he could win face offs, but many thought that his lack of offensive ability would not improve. And in the end, those people were right. In 50 total games this season, Charlyb'y had exactly zero points. Eight of those games were played with the St. Louis Scarecrows. Many may laugh at the point totals from Charlyb'y, or maybe it is just his face they are laughing at. We may not know the answer to that question, but there is one question I know the answer to. Charlyb'y is going to break out in the SMJHL playoffs this season.

He has been doing this on purpose. Charlyb'y intentionally has not scored points in the regular season. Why you might ask? Because Charlyb'y wants his first point ever to come during game 7, in overtime, at home in St. Louis. And that is exactly what is going to happen. He has so skillfully succeeded in not scoring any points that it is truly amazing that no one can see his true talent.

Many wonder what his first point will be. Whether or not it is going to be a goal or an assist. Well, I can one hundred percent that his first point will be an assist. In fact, it will be an assist to Scotty Reay, another Scarecrow due to break out. I can see it now, game 7, overtime, against their former team the Prince George Firebirds.

Many will not see this coming, and perhaps rightfully so. But Charlyb'y does not care. He knows that the best is in store and when he breaks out this playoff by assisting the game winning goal to win the Four Star Cup, the league will bow down to the greatness that is Alexander Charlyb'y.

Task #1 -

The first round of the playoffs for the impact are happening as I type today. Game one puck is about to drop and with this lets take a look at what type of match up we have going on here. The scarecrows had a horrible season this year. Finishing dead last in the league and having a minus forty-one goal differential. The also scored the least amount of goals out of any other team in the league. The scarecrows need to rebuild there core as they have not been this bad in years. I would say the GM needs some more lessons on how to run his team as he was un able to fill the void JP created. Taking a turn the the Impact, they have been the best team in the league all season long and have proved that nothing can stand in their way, Almost doubling the points the scarecrows managed this season, the Impact are the clear favourites to win the series and it would be consider very foolish to bet against the team. The impact finished with the second most goals scored throughout the regular season with 170 and allowed the least amount of goals in the net with 138. Every other team in the conference allowed at least 160 go into their own net, but the Impact found the best way to keep it out and will be the deciding factor on why they will win the cup. Plus getting 19 out of 20 points in there last ten, this teams coming in hot and the scarecrows better be ready for the fight of their life!

Task #3 - With the Montreal and St. Louis series for round one of the playoffs about to start, lets take a look at who to watch this series.A player to watch for this playoff series with the Montreal impact will be none other then Impact player Michael Burch. Burch was sensational this season putting up 19 goals and 31 assists making him one of the few players in the league to reach 50 points this season. He has the ability to be a go to guy when your team needs a goal, but also knows when is the right time to set other player up as well. Surprising how even though his scoring is only at 75, he just fell out of the top ten players for goals. So this series he is determined to show the SMJHL why he deserved to be in the top ten. As for the crows, it is none other then goaltender Lee Bowden. He had a poor season not reaching a 90 plus save percentage and had a sixty winning percentage this season, proving he could keep his team in most games. Up against a hot team like the Montreal Impact, Lee Bowden will be the critical X factor as Montreal has the best forward depth in the league. Could it be the pressure that gets to him, or is it he just has poor defence in front of him. the Crows will have to come together to pull off a victory if they want to head to the four star cup.

Task #1
After an exciting regular season time has come to move on to the best time of the year, Playoffs are just around the corner. Therefore we would like to take a close look at one of the pairings.

The second placed Colorado Mammoths will face the third placed Vancouver Whalers.

Regular season record Colorado Mammoths
Win: 27
Loss: 18
OT Loss: 5
Points: 59
GF: 164
GA: 152
Regular season record Vancouver Whalers
Win: 25
Loss: 21
OT Loss: 4
Points: 54
GF: 155
GA: 177

During the season the teams met 6 times. Colorado celebrated 4 wins, two for Vancouver. Two matches were decided in the Shoot-Out.

Colorado Mammoths (5) vs Vancouver Whalers (2)
Colorado Mammoths (4) vs Vancouver Whalers (3) - SO
Vancouver Whalers (5) vs Colorado Mammoths (4) - SO
Colorado Mammoths (3) vs Vancouver Whalers (5)
Vancouver Whalers (2) vs Colorado Mammoths (5)
Vancouver Whalers (4) vs Colorado Mammoths (6)

Now we briefly compare the individual team areas.

Goalie:
Colorado: Austin Lemieux - GP 42, W 24, L 14, OTL 4, PCT 0,878, GAA 2,85, SO 2, GA 119
Vancouver: Lukas Berger - GP 44, W20, L 18, OTL 3, PCT 0,858, GAA 3,47, SO 1, GA 134
Here are the benefits on the side of the Mammoths clearly, Austin Lemieux appears to be the better goalie of these two.

Defense:
With Kristoffer Ruud & Cody Black both teams have a top defender in the roster. Even the remaining defenders seem to lie close together when looking on their scoring points. Only the comparison of +/- ratings shows a clear winner. Viewed as a whole, both teams are here on the same level.

Forward:
Again, the teams are somewhat equally. Both have a very good sniper in their lineup. Tony Pellegrino scored 23 goals for the Mammoths, his counterpart Patrick McEichel scored 22 times for the Whalers. They are also both the leading scorer in each of their teams. Here Mc Eichel is ahead of Pellegrino. with 43 points to 42.

Taken as a whole, the Mammoths have the nose slightly in front as they have the better goalkeeper. However, it is a close call. The performance of the goalkeepers will decide in this series between victory or be defeated.

Task #3

In a sport like hockey, it is always very difficult to say who could be the best player in a playoff series. Often you tap on the player who was the best in the regular season. However, when play offs started it often happens that these guys are run out of fuel. Or they are not able to cope with the great pressure which is to be done on them. It is easy to select the best and to give him the hero status.
But for me, a playoff hero is someone who is not too good for anything. He motivates his teammates and drives them to maximum performances. This need not be the best scorer.
In this regard, I have a very special player in my mind. It's about a 4th round pick in the last draft. At no. 32 the Vancouver Whalers drafted goalie Lukas Berger. In my opinion he is the guy for a break out and get a playoff hero. Quickly, the Whalers made him their first goalie, probably due to lack of alternative. And it was no easy year for him. In the main stats for goalies, he is knocked off last, at least among the regulars goalkeepers. Save Percentage 0.858, goal against average 3.47, these are not good values. That is the reason why I believe that he will get a playoff hero. Just to show everyone that he can do it better. He will break out and leads the way for his teammates for a successful playoff run.

Task #5
The finale of the SMJHL is around the corner. Who will stand out as a winner? In the final, it will be a clash between the Kelowna Knights and the Halifax Raiders. We expect exciting games that will hopefully carry us up in a game 7, there is nothing better than that for the spectators. But how does the teams have done so far? Let's take a short look back and look at the ways the teams have taken into the finals.

Kelowna Knights:
First round against Prince George Firebirds. 4 - 2
The Knights were only able to convince in game one and to a lesser extent in game two also, which they still lost. The remaining games were very balanced, possibly even with a slight advantage for the Firebirds. The results of the series were always very tight. Except for game one, this was a clear matter (5:0, 3:4 OT, 5:4 OT, 3:4, 4:3, 3:2). On the whole a bit happier but quite deserved series win for the Knights.
Second round against Vancouver Whalers 4 - 2
Thanks to a very efficient offensive department, the Knights were able to win the first three games, despite fewer shots. A large proportion of the victories had Christoffer Björnsson. He was like a wall and defuse countless shots of Whalers. In game four, the sweep before their eyes, failed their nerves and Vancouver was back in the series. Kelowna also lost Game 5 before they defeated Vancouver in Game 6 and moved on to the finals.

Halifax Raiders:
First round against Detroit Falcons 4 - 2
The teams showed best playoff hockey in the first two games and both teams had won one game so far. In Game 3 and 4 the Raiders could win with the score of 4:1. With a hard fight the Falcons managed to win the first elimination game and move on to a game 6. But in Game 6, the Raiders were no longer tenable, and went confidently into the next round. But in Game 6, the Falcon were no longer able of holding back the Raiders and the Raiders moved into the next round confidently.

Second round against St. Louis Scarecrows 4 - 2
No one would have thought that the Scarecrows would stand here as an opponent. The underdog surprised Montreal in round one, thus the Raiders have been warned. In an exciting first game, the Raiders won, thanks to the better scoring rate. Game 2 and 3, however, went to the self-sacrificing fighting Scarecrows. In Game 4, the superiority of the Raiders paid off and they equalized the series. Then in Game 5 and 6, it was a clear matter. The Raiders won each with a shoot out of Brett Broadway.

The teams faced each other six times during the regular season, with each team winning two games in regulation and one game in overtime.
Halifax Raiders (3) vs Kelowna Knights (2)
Kelowna Knights (4) vs Halifax Raiders (5)
Halifax Raiders (2) vs Kelowna Knights (6)
Halifax Raiders (4) vs Kelowna Knights (3) - OT
Kelowna Knights (5) vs Halifax Raiders (4) - OT
Kelowna Knights (3) vs Halifax Raiders (1)
Probably the most dangerous weapon of the Knight's is their first line with Jonathan Lundberg, Mainio Makinen, Tony Flow. The three scored 58 goals in the regular season for the Knights and are hardly to stop. Goalie Christoffer Bjornsson is also a guy you should keep an eye on. He could be the key factor to win the 4 Star Cup.

Also the Raiders have a very strong goalie with Brett Broadway. When we look at the statistics, he is slightly behind his opponent, the difference between this two is very low. But he is in a great shape and comes with the confidence of two shootouts in the final. In offense, the responsibility is spread over several shoulders. Which can be a very important factor in the battle for the championship.

We are curious to see who emerges as the winner in this finale and is crowned the winner. Good luck to both.

Task 1:

In the half finals of the Four Star Cup the St. Louis Scarecrows go up against the Halifax Raiders.
The Scarecrows beat Montreal Impact in 5 games in the first round and the Raiders went to a game 6 against the Detroit Falcons.
The Scarecrows seem pretty strong after their upset win against the Presidents Throphy winning Montreal Impact.

During the 7 regular season encounters Halifax Raiders were the clear suppirior team over the Scarecrows.
Winning 6 out of the 7 games in regulation and losing one in regulation.

(Game 1)
St. Louis Scarecrows 0 - 1 Halifax Raiders
(Game 2)
Halifax Raiders 6 - 2 St. Louis Scarecrows
(Game 3)
St. Louis Scarecrow 2 - 0 Halifax Raiders
(Game 4)
Halifax Raiders 6 - 3 St. Louis Scarecrows
(Game 5)
St. Louis Scarecrows 3 - 6 Halifax Raiders
(Game 6)
St. Louis Scarecrows 3 - 7 Halifax Raiders
(Game 7)
Halifax Raiders 4 - 3 St. Louis Scarecrows

A few close games, but judging from the scores in most cases a very dominant Raiders team.
Scarecrows should keep their eyes open for Ignant Ogorodnikov, a player who scored against them in 4 differnt games through the season.
Aswell as Sekkusu Gan who scored 6 goals against them. While the Raiders should keep their eyes on Alexander Charlyb'y, he might not get any points, but his faceoff precentage are off the chart.

The Scarecrows have shown to be able to score against the Raiders, but they've also shown to like to eat a few to many goals in return aswell.
If they can sort out the defence and keep their offence going, I think we can see some very close games here in this series.

Task 2:

Task 3:

What can I say about Alexander Charlyb'y?

Drafted by the Prince George Firebirds in the second round 7th pick, 15th overall and traded to the St. Louis Scarecrows midseason.
With 0 points in 50 regular season matches you wouldn't guess that this guy is actually a beast.
Well a beast in his area.. the faceoff circle. You see, while Charlybabe might not be hot towards the goal.
He is a blazing fire storm of alright faceoff taking. With an alright percentage of 60.57% he stood on top of the league.
The second best only ending with 56.33%. It's almost as if Charlybý doesn't see the entire field, but rather only the face-off spot.
I think Charlibi will be the play-off hero for his team. With a face-off precentage of 62.30% so far in 6 games, he's winning draws and setting up oppertunities for his team.
This is the most important reason for me to name Charlybya to be the hero his team needs. Keeping the puck in their posession with such a high success rate will lead to success.

While still at 0 points in his career, Charlychee will have to score one day. With 4 shots in 50 games he had some chanches. One day a rookie goalie will make a mistake giving Charlyb'b his first point.
Assists are a weird story, either ICharly doesn't pass well or his teammates dont score well. overtime they'll probably get a better chemestry resulting in points.

Who knows it might even happen in this very playoff run.

Task 1:

The Vancouver Whalers and the Kelowna Knights will face off against each other in the second round of the SMJHL playoffs after facing each other seven times during the regular season. The regular season match up was a close one with Vancouver winning four out of the seven games, with two of the wins gained after going to the shoot out to decide the outcome. Goals for and against were dead even in the series at 23. There was a definite home ice advantage in the series, with each team collectively outscoring their opponent by five goals over the games played on home ice. The series may be decided by the improvements that were made by each team during the season. Looking at the series game by game may provide some insight.

Game 23:
The Knights outshot the Whalers 28 to 21 at home in a game that Whaler Riley Mason was named the first star for his two goal effort on the road. Despite Mason’s effort, the Knights won a close one at home 3 to 2.

Game 68:
The Knights won their second home ice contest with the Whalers in a 6 to 3 blow out, outshooting the Whalers 28 to 14. Slacker Pentecost was the game’s first star with the hat trick.

Game 72:
The Whalers squeaked out a victory at home with the shots on goal 24 to 23 after regulation and overtime. Zach Zyvleski scored the game winner in the shoot out to seal the victory for the Whalers, while Christoffer Bjornsson, the losing goaltender, was oddly named the game’s first star.

Game 88:
The Whalers “earned” the first road victory of the series, besting the Knights 5 to 4 despite being outshot by the Knights 33 to 14. Zyvleski again scored the winning goal in the shootout after having scored earlier in regulation. Yet all three stars went to the home team.

Game 95:
Shots on goal were close at 22 to 19 in favor of the Whalers in this game in Vancouver, but the score was not. The Whalers outscored the Knights 6 to 3. With the score tied 3 to 3 midway through the third period, Patrick McEichel went off and scored a hat trick in a four minute span to lead the Whalers to victory and earning the first star award for the game.

Game 107:
This one was equally close in shots on goal and on the scoreboard, with Vancouver outshooting Kelowna at home 31 to 30 and winning the game 3 to 2. Cody Black scored the deciding goal on the power play with about six and a half minutes remaining. Bernie Sanders was the only reasonable vote for the first star of the game for his three point night.

Game 183:
The Kelowna Knights outshot the Vancouver Whalers 24 to 19 on the way to a 4 to 2 home ice come from behind victory. Maximilian Watcher was named the first star for Vancouver for his two goals and three hits in a losing effort.

It’s interesting to look at the regular season match ups, but little trend can be determined from the analysis. Ultimately, the randomness of the SMJHL dictates that anything can happen.

Task 2:

<div align="center">[Image: tumblr_nz93yspACI1upx2d4o1_400.png]</div>

Task 3:

The St. Louis Scarecrows have already upset the Montreal Impact in the first round of the playoffs and they achieved this feat decisively, winning the series 4 games to 1. Although I still can’t see the Scarecrows having a long run in the playoffs, I see the unsung hero for this season’s playoffs coming out of St. Louis. The SMJHL probably doesn’t keep records for the all time lowest point totals by a player in the regular season, but Alexander Charlyb’y has to have a share of this all time record.

Charlyb’y played a full 50 game regular season splitting time between Prince George and St. Louis without scoring a single point. Charlyb’y made his contribution at the faceoff dot, winning over 60 percent of his faceoffs during the regular season. This production or lack of it came over an average of over eleven minutes of ice time per game.

The faceoff specialist obviously doesn’t possess good offensive skills. This is an understatement. Charlyb’y passes the puck a bit better than he can shoot or handle the puck. Yet, I’m going out on a limb with the prediction that Charlyb’y will get his first point in the playoffs with a game winning goal. That goal will look something like this:

<div align="center"><object width="460" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/cATa-g-uWOM"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/cATa-g-uWOM" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="460" height="315"></embed></object></div>

Task 4:

<div align="center">[Image: tumblr_nz93yspACI1upx2d4o2_540.jpg]</div>

Task 5:

The SMJHL finals are about to begin with the Kelowna Knights facing the Halifax Raiders for the Four Star Cup. The teams faced each other six times during the regular season, with each team winning two games in regulation and one game in overtime. Kelowna had the edge in goal differential for the series, outscoring Halifax 23 to 19. Home ice was no advantage during the regular season, with each team splitting the games that ended in regulation and each winning an overtime game on the road. Here is a brief recap of each game of the series to see if either team gained the upper hand as the season progressed:

Game 50
The Halifax Raiders won the first meeting between the two teams by a 3 to 2 score after outshooting the Knights 27 to 22 through three periods of play. Ignant Ogorodnikov was named the first star of the game for his outstanding play during a team leading 21:25 minutes of ice time. Odorodnikov scored a goal and added two assists, factoring in on all the raiders goals and adding for hits in a very busy night. This is one of the best games by an individual player in my first season covering the SMJHL. Both goaltenders were solid in this contest, with save percentages either side of 0.900.

Game 124
The Halifax Raiders won their second game in a row by a one goal differential with the shots on goal for the game even at 23. This was a bit of a wild one with a total of five goals scored in the first period. The Raiders had the lead 3 to 2 at the end of the first period. The Knights scored two unanswered goals in the second period to make it 4 to 3 Knights at the end of two periods. Finally, the Raiders fought back in the third period to win the game 5 to 4. Slacker Pentecost was the first star of the game with a goal, three assists in 22:17 minutes of play.

Game 138
The third matchup between these two teams was no contest. The game was close early but the flood gates opened in the second period when the Knights scored four goals to make the score 5 to 1 in favor of the Knights. Brett Broadway played a total of 34:16 in relief of Curtis Allison. It was a bad 25:44 for Curtis Allison prior to that. He was only credited with three saves on seven shots. The final score was Kelowna 6 Halifax 2. The scoring was spread throughout the lineup for the Knights, but Alphonse Oduya was named the first star of the game for his two goals and five hits in the winning effort.

Game 147
The game needed to go into overtime for the Raiders to win the decision. However, the Raiders outshot the Knights 13 to 1 in the second period and 27 to 18 for the game on the way to winning 4 to 3. Goaltending was not very good for either team in the contest, although Halifax again started their backup goaltender. The first star of the game was awarded to Petr Kolesnikovs for his three point effort in 21:03 minutes of play. Kolesnikovs also went 14 for 25 on faceoffs to help the Raiders to the victory.

Game 164
The Knights won the fifth meeting of the season between the two teams 5 to 4 in overtime in a close contest throughout the entire game. The Knights outshot the Raiders 30 to 28. Sekkusu Gan was named the first star of the game for his two goals in 17:03 minutes of play. Mainio Makinen was the star for the Knights with his seven shots on goal and 2 goals in 21:55 minutes of play on the losing side. That earned Makinen the thirds star of the game.

Game 172
The final meeting between the two eventual conference finalists was the first to be decided by goaltending. The Raiders outshot the Knights at home by a narrow 22 to 20 margin, but were behind early when Tony Flow scored just 24 seconds into the game. Christoffer Bjornsson was the first star of the game for stopping 21 of the 22 shots he faced in leading the Knights to the 3 to 1 victory.

The Knights seemed to grow stronger as the season series progressed. Tony Flow led the league in scoring and Bjornsson was arguably the best goaltender in the SMJHL this season. I had noticed in my SMJHL final report that the Knights had a good blend of skills and that they were perhaps the league’s most consistent team in S26. On the other hand, the top line players for the Raiders tended to fade over the course of the season.

The key to this series is going to be the defensive play of the Knights from the blue line and the Chamas line. I believe that the Knights and the last line of defense, Christoffer Bjornsson will be up to the task and will have their names engraved on the Four Star Cup.
