The Power Play can make you, and the penalty kill can break you. These five are the type of players the opposition fears when they are down a man. When you talk about a power play quarterback you find the very quality in everyone on this list, all of them are able to score it as well as dish it for the apple. The SHL is full of great performers; and great individual performances but these guys were catalysts when it really mattered.
Andrey Barbashev Special PTs: 21 (7PPG, 12 PPA, 1PKG, 1PKA) Special Minutes: 196PPM 196PKM First on this list in Andrey Barbashev most known for his monster SMJHL career, Barbashev has been patiently waiting to become a star in the SHL. The numbers Barbashev put up on the Power Play and Penalty Kill are tops in the league; he has become a true playmaker on the Power Play, and a great defender on the Penalty Kill. One of most notable stats is how little Barbashev shot the puck on the Power Play (38PPS) totaling 7PPG. His Power Play shooting percentage (18.4% improves on his already astronomically high even strength shooting percentage (15.25%). It will be fun to watch young Andrey develop into his prime as he becomes a cornerstone of an improving Toronto North Stars team. Barbashev also shows Penalty Kill prowess with his 2PTs coming while being down a man, talk about a morale boost for your team. :admirals: 2. Patrick Brumm Special PTs: 19 (8 PPG, 10 PPA, 1PKG) :admirals: Special Minutes: 169PPM 146PKM Brumm was touted to a Power Play quarterback at the very least, and he accomplished that this year as the Portland Admirals had the most potent offense. He showed he was not afraid to let it rip when he got the puck on his stick with the highest shot Power Play Shot total, with the lowest minutes on this list. Brumm had a good amount of help on the Power Play with Buster Killington netting 11 PPG. The thing that we have seen from this young Offensive Defensemen is that he can really score; his 8 PPG is good for second league wide, and only the Stevens Award favorite Alonzo Garbanzo scored as many goals from the blue line (16). There were many doubts after a lackluster rookie campaign but Brumm continues to get better, and the Power Play is where he eats. 3. Oliver Pettyfer Special PTs: 19 (6PPG, 11PPA, 2PKG) Special Minutes: 172PPM 260PKM Pettyfer was an all around Power Play, and Penalty Kill beast! When you have a teammates who live in the box the way Big Z (1st PIM), and Bojo (2nd PIM) you have to have a fluent Penalty Kill. Pettyfer provided this logging more Penalty Kill minutes than anyone in the league. Oliver was not just skating down the ice trying to kill off time; it was an active pursuit to score even when down a man. The 2PKG’s that Pettyfer netted leads the league; proving that a top tier Penalty Kill player can be just as dangerous even down a man. Pettyfer was not only a potent Penalty Killer, but also strive on the Power Play netting 6 goals in only 29 shots (20.6%). 4. Jackson Rodgers Tanaka Special PTs: 18 (7PPG, 11PPA) Special Minutes: 202PPM 161PKM JRT lead the Edmonton Blizzard to the second best PP + PK in the league; he also helped lead Edmonton to the best record in the league. Games are won and lost on the special teams; thanks to JRT being a special team catalyst the Blizzard didn’t do too much losing this season. JRT will volatile in the push for the Challenge Cup, teams playing Edmonton take note if you want to shut them down you will have to stop their special teams which is led by Jackson Rodgers Tanaka. 5. Griffin Simons Special PTs: 17 (7PPG, 10PPA) Special Minutes:183PPM 67PKM It shouldn’t be a surprise to see Griffin Simons on this list as he has become synonymous with scoring throughout his SHL Career. Simons put up this huge numbers on a pretty lackluster Power Play unit (8TH OA) it would be interesting to see what his numbers would look like had they performed better. Simons is a true offensive weapon, that’s why he saw very little time on the Penalty Kill; I’m sure Tanner would like him to help out a little bit more going the other direction. It is hard to argue with someone who puts up 40Pt season after 40Pt season.

Our special teams are cursed this year. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. It definitely has nothing to do with my lines.
