PT #6 - Rival Teams
#1

The Situation

There's always that one team - that one that you absolutely hate, whether it be because of a long history or because of that one bad game last week. Is the rivalry founded in statistics? It's not like you'd stop hating them if it wasn't, but let's see how your teams measure up anyway.

Your Task

Written option: Look at StatsVS in the sim index and write at least 200 words, citing at least 3 stats, about how your team fares against their rival.

Graphics option: Look at StatsVS in the sim index and make a pre-game "what to watch for" infographic comparing your team to your rivals. Must include: 3 stats & both team logos.

Your Reward

4 capped TPE for doing the thing (just one of the options, not both).

Remember, the PT cap for the season is 30.

Only S31 SMJHL Rookies are eligible for this PT.

You cannot claim TPE for this PT until a post is made in the global claim thread.

Deadline
11:59pm EST Nov 1/16.

The Detroit Falcons have developed an early season rivalry with the Montreal Militia. It is no surprise, as the teams have lined up on opposing benches seven times already this season. Detroit has wracked up 4 wins and dropped 2 in regulation and a single game in a shootout. Overall, in seven games, the Falcons have netted 19 goals to Montreal's 17.
However, Montreal has outshot Detroit in these 7 games 170 to 163. This certainly tells the tale of the tape for the first set of games between these two junior rivals. The Falcons have benefitted strong goaltending and a solid set of play in the defensive end.

With little success on special teams against Montreal, Detroit would be well served to push their current 14.81% Power Play percentage up in their remaining tilts against the Militia this season. The fans and players are certainly in for a treat the rest of the way as it looks like both franchises will be in the mix come playoff time and could meet during the race for the cup.

As previously mentioned, special teams will be a big part of the remainder of the games between these two teams. Thus far, Detroit has killed 82.76% of their penalties against Montreal and they will need to continue to make that percentage rise and rise during playoff time to send the Militia home early and back wishing that they were Impact players.

The Kelowna Knights have absolutely destroyed the Prince George Firebirds so far. In five games played, Kelowna has won all five of those games. Additionally, the points scared are equally lop-sided - 17 to 3. Scoring less than one goal on average per game is never a good sign! Worse, three of the losses came at home!

Especially telling are the powerplay statistics: The Firebirds have had fifteen power-plays and only scored once. That is only a bit more than 6% of the time. Meanwhile Kelowna has scored in five of 27 opportunities. This is more than 18%! While the percentages tell a big part of the story, one should also not discount the opportunities. Having almost double the amount of power-plays shows how much of a difference there are in these games in terms of dominance.

A similar dominance is seen with shots. I just mentioned double the amount of power-play opportunities, it is a similar story with shots as well. Kelowna has about double the amount of shots with 151 compared to 88 for the Firebirds. Even then, you have to wonder... something is going wrong when double the amount of shots lead to a 17 to 3 goal comparison - Kelowna scored almost 6 times the amount of goals on not even twice the amount of shots.

For this season at least, the Halifax Raiders have had the measure of their heated rivals, the St. Louis Scarecrows. The Eastern Conference rivals have clashed 7 times so far this season and in 6 of those, the advantage has been with the Raiders who were able to come away with a win; the Scarecrows being the victors only once. What is perhaps even more shocking is the number of goals scored by the two teams during these matchups. The Raiders managed to find the back of the net a solid 22 times in the 7 games played, compared to a meagre 5 goals scored by St. Louis over the same period. It is fair to say also that the Raiders' special teams units have been rolling against the Scarecrows this season. Their power play unit has managed to score on 30% of it's opportunities; something that may be a big contributor to the whole team's success, and perhaps even more impressive is their penalty kill unit's efficiency, boasting an incredible success rate of 96.88%. On paper at least, it looks like the Raiders have dominated the Scarecrows this season as they attempt to play their way to another Four Star Cup. Whether they can maintain this momentum against one of their fiercest rivals into the post season may be what marks this team out as one that can be a perennial contender.

The Detroit Falcons and Montreal Militia have developed a nice rivalry early on in the season. They started off playing their first 4 games against each other and that’s how everything started off. They have played each other 10 times already, Detroit having 5 wins, 4 losses. One of those wins came during overtime and one of those losses came during a shootout. Detroit Falcons have scored 22 goals against Montreal while Montreal has scored 21. As you can already see, it’s already tight in all the games they have played. It’s always coming down to the wire and the rivalry is real between them.

Going to the special teams, Detroit has 10.81% and Montreal has 17.65%. You can see the difference between this against each other. Detroit does better than Montreal thus why they have one more win against them. Going to the power killing, Montreal hold 89.19% and Detroit hold 82.35%. Montreal is doing a better job at killing the penalties against Detroit. The percentage between them is about the same as the power play percentage. You can already see the difference which there is none because it’s really close between and the rivalry will be epic if they meet in the playoffs.

Every team has a rival. That one team you just circle on the schedule calendar. The one you can't wait to destroy. Everything elevates that night. The shots are harder, the hits are dirtier, the saves are more desperate and the emotions are higher. Everyone in the building can feel it. The anticipation of war.

For the Vancouver Whalers the obvious rival is the Detroit Falcons. The Falcons and Whalers are mirror opposites when it comes to defensive play this season with the Whalers posting the 4th best Goals Against average in the league at 2.54 per game. While the Falcons are one of the worst defensive teams at 7th with 2.80 goals against per game. The Whalers continue that strong defensive play on the Penalty Kill with the Leagues 3rd best PK Unit at 82.2% while the Falcons are the worst a man short at 77.5%. Continuing on to the always critical faceoffs the Whalers are the 3rd best team in the dot at 50.5% effectiveness while the Falcons are dead last at 45.8%.

It's going to be critical for Detroit to fix these defensive deficiencies (see what I did there?) If they plan to make a serious run for the Four Star Cup this season.

When it comes to team rivalries then they differ. Some rivalries are just for the sake of competition and everyone are friends between each other its just that they are really competitive and it gives that extra satisfaction to win a game over your friends so that later on you can brag about it while having a pint of beer. But not all of the rivalries are as pleasant and some of them are based on honest dislike towards a person, group of people or even the whole team as an organisation.

One of such aggressive rivalries are between Prince George Firebirds and Detroit Falcons. This rivalry is more like one sided as since the beginning of the regular season and actually even before the regular season, some of the Prince George Firebirds decided to have this rivalry and promised to destroy Detroit Falcons in every match-up they will have in the regular season. The reason of course was the "Deplorables" scandal and obviously some of the Prince George Firebirds players did not like it.

So far both teams have met each other 5 times, 2 times on Prince George ice and 3 times on Detroit Falcons ice, and one game is yet to be played between both of these teams. The rivalry score between each of the teams are 3:2 in favour of Prince George Firebirds. But in general you could say that Prince George Firebirds players are staying true to their promise and maybe they are not destroying the Detroit Falcons stat wise, but they definitely are winning. Firebirds are leading in puck possession in all of the zones as the lowest FO% is in the Offensive zone at 51.70% Faceoffs won. The penalty kill percentage is the highest between other teams it being at 90.48% while power play being also really good - 24%. And in total leading the scoring with 12 goals for and only 6 goals against Firebirds.

As mentioned before, there is one game still left, but we can see that Firebirds have taken this rivalry serious and while being the last team in standings in their conference, most of the games against Detroit Falcons are played differently and you can feel the rivalry, not even mentioning the big line brawl that happened between these two teams.

While many likely count the Detroit Falcons as a rival, the St. Louis Scarecrows form the southern half of a midwestern rivalry that warrants discussion as we approach the playoffs. The Falcons and the Crows have played each other five times in the first forty games played on the season for both teams.

The matchup has been remarkably even. In the five games played, each team has won two games in regulation and lost two games in regulation, with St. Louis edging Detroit in a shootout for the fifth result. Furthermore, the goals scored in aggregate across those five games give St. Louis only a slight edge, 14 to 13. St. Louis has gone 5 for 20 on the Power Play against Detroit, a mark of 25% which is above their season average of 17.18%. They have given up 5 power play goals to Detroit on 22 penalty kills, a mark of 77.27%. That is slightly below their season average of 79.41%. Also of note is that the Crows have won 55.56% of their offensive zone faceoffs against Detroit. That's St. Louis' best mark against any team this year.

The Crows will play Detroit two more times before the playoffs with the first of those coming up as the second end of a back-to-back that starts tonight. They will certainly be looking to come out ahead on the season series as well as climb out of last place in the SMJHL. They can clinch the season series with a regulation win in their next outing, due to having gotten said shootout win while splitting the other four games thus far.

So far this season the battle of British Columbia stands in favor of the Vancouver Whalers by one point in the standings by virtue of a shoot out win. Goal differential shows a greater advantage by the Whalers over the Prince George Firebirds with the Whalers outscoring the Firebirds 21 to 14. This goal differential comes despite the Firebirds having outshot the Whalers by a small margin 165 to 158. The greatest statistical difference therefore seems to be in shooting percentage or save percentage. The Whalers are scoring at a 13.3 percent rate in the series, while the Firebirds are scoring at an 8.5 percent rate. Power play goals were also even at 7 apiece.

Both teams may be worn out by the third period with the teams combining for 232 hits in the seven contests. Even those hits are fairly evenly distributed with 117 dished out by Vancouver and 115 delivered by Prince George. In their first match up of the season, the Whalers dominated the third period 4 to 0 enroute to a 5 to 2 victory. In the second game, the Firebirds scored the only third period goal which proved to be the game winner. In the third contest, the Firebirds scored the only third period goal to send the game to overtime. The fourth game was one by Prince George on the strength of three third period goals. The Whalers scored three third period goals in shutting out the Firebirds in game number five. In the sixth contest, the Whalers coasted through the third period with a 3 to 0 shutout. The Firebirds won the latest contest 3 to 1 on power play goals in the second and third periods.

After looking at all the statistics, I’m unable to discern much of a trend other than the tendency for Prince George to win the lower scoring closer games and the Whalers to keep scoring once they have a lead. If the two meet in the playoffs, expect a long and hard fought series.

There are many teams in the league that consider themselves the rivals of the Detroit Falcons as they are all pissed off about the start of season deplorable drama and all that followed. One of the few teams in the league however that Detroit actually cares about though and considers a threat are the Halifax Raiders.

The raiders are the defending champions and have as strong a roster ever as they look to repeat as they sit comfortably atop the eastern conference. The matchup between the two teams so far has been quite close with the falcons sitting 2-3 vs the raiders with 2 more matchups still the come, the falcons also sit slightly behind with 13 goals versus the raiders 16.

A key stat however that has plagued the falcons all season along and especially against the raiders is their 40% FO win rate, something that they will have to improve if they face them in a playoff series and are already looking to improve with the acquisition of Joey Ryan. Next despite these two teams being rivals their games have been quite clean with the falcons having the lowest PIMS against the raiders of any team with 34 and for the raiders their 2nd lowest with 52.
