Analyzing the Upcoming SMJHL Recreate Prospects

With less than a week to go leading up to the S34 SMJHL draft, I wanted to take a look at some of the prospects available. I decided to focus on recreates for this article, and get a good idea of what this crop of recreates is able to bring to the table. There are a decent number of recreated players in this draft, here is the breakdown of player positions for recreates:

Centers – 0
Left Wing – 2
Right Wing – 4
Defense - 4
Goalies – 3

As you can see, this is a pretty good sized crop of recreates for most positions, except for Center, I guess no one wanted to waste points trying to win faceoffs. We will take a look at each of these players in a bit more detail and try to get a handle on what the draft will look like in relation to the available recreate prospects.

First we are going to look at three players who were able to get some playing time in season 33.


Carrick Murray – G

Murray was born in Pittsburgh, PA, home of the Heinz Ketchup Museum. Murray is an interesting prospect, it’s not often you can draft a player who has already won the Four Star Cup. Murray is a potential goalie of the future; it’s just a matter of which franchise needs a goalie. Murray has a great all-around build, he will be a solid backup at minimum and you can expect him to push to take the starter position by next season if he progresses well.

Quote from our scout: “Murray played a handful of games in the SMJHL last season and he definitely seems ready to jump in and make a difference. He will still need to take some more time to develop but he is off to a great start. He has to be an extremely appetizing proposition to any team looking for a backup goalie this season and potentially a starter next season. Goalies take a long time to move up into the SHL and whoever drafts Carrick Murray will have several great seasons with extremely solid net-minding in front of them.”

Chuck Goody Jr. – D

Goody is the son of former SHL player Chuck Goody and was born in Boston, MA, sometimes referred to as Bean Town, because everyone there has gas. Goody played a portion of last season with the Halifax Raiders; unfortunately the team’s playoff run was ended by the Montreal Militia. Goody’s skating ability has really improved since coming into the league and his defense skills are top notch. Don’t expect big checks out of Chuck Jr, but you can expect some strong defensive play.

Quote from our scout: “Goody has the pedigree of a SHL player; he is off to a great start and his skating is getting better and better each time we see him. Keep an eye on Goody in his own end and with the puck, this guy really knows how to move the puck and defend it when needed. His board play is impressive as it is, but his outlet passes really round out the rest of his game. He’s going to be a great defensive prospect, hopefully he lives up to the legacy.”

Yuri Bakos-Markov - RW

Bakos-Markov comes to us from Novosibirsk, Russia, home of the Longest Underground Bridge in the World, but Yuri doesn't come from under a bridge, he's a rising star and he will be someone to watch out for in this draft. Bakos-Markov was part of the Four Star Cup winning Montreal Militia, so he's already a champion before his draft.

Quote from our scout: "Bakos-Markov has an amazing shot and he sticks to the puck like glue. Defenders need to be very wary of him when he's got the puck on his stick, one wrong move and it'll be in your net. If a team can pair this sniper with a solid playmaker, they could have themselves a really solid scoring line. Bakos-Markov has very few flaws in his game, but his checking is one of them, don't expect him to use his body much, instead he has an eye for the puck and tries to get a hold of it by poke checking and stick lifting it away from the opposing players. This guy is going to be highly coveted at this year's draft, expect him to be taken early by a team looking for scoring depth on the wing."

Spitfire – RW

The “Madona” of this draft class, Spitfire has no last name, but he doesn’t need one to score goals. Originally being born in Antarctica may make for a tough transition as he moves to North America, but let’s take a look at his build. Despite being a sniper build, Spitfire isn’t completely one dimensional; he also has a decent defensive game. His skating is decent, but his scoring and hands are great.

Quote from our scout: “Spitfire is an interesting character, what kind of name is that anyway? His shot is fantastic for his level, you don’t see many like it, and he can deke around almost anyone. You can’t afford to give this guy space, because he will use it and you’ll find the puck is in your net more often than not, but what he really needs to work on is holding onto the puck, with a bit more strength he could be even more effective. Strength is one of those things that players don't realize how much they need until they need it. Keep an eye on this guy, he will likely focus on increasing his strength on the puck and he should turn into a really solid scorer.”

Fedor Shirobokov – D

Shirobokov is a two way defenseman from Russia, who is good in his own end and he can move the puck well to set up chances in the offensive zone. Shirobokov’s build is very strong defensively and he has great passing, but he could use to work on his puck handling.

Quote from our scout: “Shirobokov has really good defensive positioning and he makes strong and direct passes out of his own zone, teams are always looking to make that first pass out of the zone and Shirobokov can definitely bring that. He might need to work on bulking up a bit to make those hard checks, but with some time he could get there. He is absolutely an asset to have on the back end and he can solidify the entire squad by controlling his own end.”

Intars Vladimirovich Barsou – G

In a competition for the longest name team, Barsou comes to us from Latvia, home to the world’s tallest women, after learning they had the world’s tallest women I was curious how tall we were talking, it turns out the average height of a Latvian woman is 5’8”, not as tall as I expected, but it is an average. Back to Barsou, he’s a Hybrid Goalie focusing on hand speed. Barsou has yet to update his base build, but as you can see he is focusing on stopping the puck with quick reaction time and hand speed.

Quote from our scout: “Barsou has one of the best glove hands I’ve ever seen from a rookie; sometimes it’s so fast you don’t even see it. He has absolutely impressed with his hands and reaction time, but he may take some time to round out the rest of his game. His game is really positional and he doesn’t excel when he needs to make an acrobatic save, but if he keeps playing a solid positional game and following his strengths, he should be a great asset. Look for Barsou to make some improvements to his Agility and Style Control, once he's improved in those areas he should be able to step in and make enough saves for a backup role in the SMJHL.”

Sterling Slaughter – RW

Slaughter is a power forward that comes to us from Japan, don’t mind his name, I swear it’s actually Japanese. Slaughter is the prototypical power forward, he’s got some focus in hitting and strength, battling for the puck in the corners and driving hard at the net.

Quote from our scout: “Sterling Slaughter loves to win one on one battles for the puck, he muscles his way to the net and handles himself well in net front battles. He isn’t a rush scorer, but he can definitely put the puck in the net on a rebound. Slaughter is the kind of player you want to be a net front presence for your team. He can screen the goalie and make sure that he doesn't get a good look at your shots, and any rebounds that pop out, he can pounce on and quickly bury.”

Maurizio Arrivabene – LW

Arrivabene is a winger who’s from the Industrial Capital of Itay, Brescia. Arrivabene is declared for team Latvia for IIHF competition. He is a quick skater and a great sniper. Arrivabene’s build focuses on Scoring and Skating; he’s absolutely built to put the puck in the net.

Quote from our scout: “Maurizio Arrivabene is a fast skating winger who loves to put the puck in the net; he is one of the best guys to have on a rush play because he really knows how to shoot the puck while skating at full speed. His game is still a bit one dimensional, he needs to work on his passing and strength, but for a scorer getting into the SMJHL, those are pretty standard things to work on. Arrivabene will absolutely impress with his shot this coming season in the SMJHL.”

Niklaus St. Croix – D

St. Croix is a defensive defenseman from Innsbruck, Austria, a small city in the middle of the Alps. He’s got the speed and definitely knows what to do in his own end. His puck handling and passing will need some work, but he’s on his way to being a solid defensive defenseman.

Quote from our scout: “St. Croix is a great defenseman; he absolutely knows what he’s doing in his own end. You won’t see any offensive flair here, but you might get some decent passing out of him. His skating is great and he can catch up to most forwards to make a good defensive play. You can expect St. Croix to be a prized prospect in this upcoming draft strictly based on his speed and defensive awareness. If he can round out the rest of his game he will make it tough for teams to play against his team.”

Logan Tesfaye – LW

Logan Tesfaye comes from an unnamed town in the United Kingdom, one can only assume he is referring to Camelot, the castle/town from those King Arthur stories. Tesfaye is a two way forward, he plays solidly on both sides of the ice, back-checking and forechecking. He is a great passer, and you can expect Tesfaye to be a very rounded player.

Quote from our scout: “Logan Tesfaye is putting in the effort to improve with the draft day looming less than a week away. He is good at a lot of things, but great at none. His skating is good enough to keep up with most players, but he needs improvement in a lot of areas to become a go-to guy in both ends of the ice. Moving the puck well is something that Tesfaye does well enough to help out a team, but time will tell if this well rounded player can push into being more than a 3rd line winger.”

Maxwell Andrews – RW

Maxwell Andrews is from the tiny tiny town of “Canada”. You know, that place that’s above America? Come on people, at least give me a city, I’m grasping at straws here! Andrews is a Sniper, and like many before him, he’s not here to check anyone, he’s more of the wheel, snipe, celly, kind of guy. Max has no updates yet, but let’s take a look at his build so far:

Quote from our scout: “Max Andrews is a point producer, when he gets the puck he makes things happen, sometimes it’s a timely pass to set up a team mate, but usually it’s a goal that he goes for. Unfortunately Andrews is not hard to knock off the puck, he’s small at only 5’8” and he struggles against larger competition. Hopefully he can work on improving his speed to a point where he can get around most guys, but where it is right now, he’s a bit of a slow easy target for would be checkers.”

Bojo Storm – D

Bojo Storm is from Mexico City, Mexico, an absolutely massive city with a huge population. The population in Mexico City is so big that they have traffic nightmares constantly. The super-rich often take helicopters from place to place to avoid traffic. Bojo is a defensive defenseman that can’t skate, score, pass, play the puck, or throw a check. He’s a bit of an enigma, but wow does he have impressive defensive awareness.

Quote from our scout: “Bojo Storm is umm…. Well, I think he’d be good at being a defensive coach or something, he knows exactly where to be and what to do; he just can’t get there or do anything when he gets there. Storm is going to need a lot of work before he can be considered useful on any roster. He always seems to know what’s happening around him in the defensive end, and he’s good at defending the puck along the boards, but if you get skating you can easily pass him. If you hit him he crumples to the ice. It really looks like he will have a long hill to climb to prove the doubters wrong.”

As you can tell, we have quite the crop of recreates here; it’s interesting to see the builds of those who have been here before and taking a look at what they did differently the 2nd, 3rd, or 20th time around (JPL). With the draft quickly approaching, we will see soon who has had their eye on these prospects and who will be playing for which team come puck drop.
