Week #1: Game 5:HAL @ COL
#1

*Bob Cole Voice*
Ohhhhh baby what a game we had here. The second game of the season opening back to back between the Halifax Raiders and the Colorado Mammoths. The Mammoths squeaked out a 5-4 win in what showcased the two teams great offences. This game would prove that point even further.
First Period
The Mammoths would have a fast paced start and it payed off when Colton Hagen would bury his 2nd of the year to open the scoring early. The early lead wouldn't last long though as a sloppy play by the Mammoths leads to Kip O'Callahan knotting the game up at 1s with his 3rd of the year off a sweet pass by St. Lauren just 22 seconds after Hagen's goal. And just1 minuted 43 seconds later, the Raiders would get another one, this time off the stick of Adam McKapy. Don't sit yet folks as just 12 seconds later they would extend their lead to 2 off a wicked shot by Zanarkand Abes. After an exciting start, the play would die down until sophomore Vratislav Zbynek would bring the Mammoths to within 1 after a 3-2 costs the Raiders with 3:50 left on the clock.

Second Period
After a back and forth opening period, the Mammoths would take control in the second. Just past the halfway mark of the period, Vincent Garland would get his first of the year and tie the game at 3. And then 2:08 second later, Zbynek would get his second of the season on a wicked one timer from Kesler.
This would be all the action in the period as we go into the 3rd with the Mammoths leading 4-3.

Third Period
The Mammoths would continue the pressure they had in the 2nd early on in the 3rd.Hunter Hotchkiss would net his 1st of the year 4:03 into the period. The Raider's would wake up and start to show signs of life. Just 2 minutes after the Hotchkiss goal, Luca Meier would find himself on a breakaway looking for his second of the game just to be robbed by Landon Boeing. A bad pinch by the Raiders would lead to Daedric Heikennin finishing off a 2 on 1. And that would be it for Jordin FourFour Jr. after allowing 5 goals on just 16 shots. A late push by the Raiders would be too little too late, despite Luca Meier with 3:18 left on the clock.

Final Score: Mammoths 6 - Raiders 4

Karri's Keeper Corner

Week 1 - Game 5 - HAL vs COL

Anderson/FourFour, Jr vs Boeing

Keeper of the Match:

Jordin FourFour, Jr. started things off for Halifax with a fairly poor outing, today. With only 16 shots on net, he allowed 5 goals and a measly 68.8% save percentage - much worse than he is capable. We've seen this kid before, and I'm not sure if it was some pre-game jitters, he wasn't feeling well, or it was just an uncharacteristic off-night for him, but Halifax had to send Anderson in to finish the game - and he did well, with a 91% save percentage against 11 shots. While Boeing escaped with the win tonight, his 4 goals on 20 shots and 80% save percentage wasn't impressive, either. Tonight's Keeper of the Match has to go to Anderson, coming in cold and keeping the score a lot more respectable than it otherwise could have been. It isn't easy to come in cold and unprepared, but Anderson did just that and deserves credit.

Unsung hero:

Jeremy Anderson came in relief of Jordin FourFour Jr. to try and save the game for the Halifax Raiders. When he came in the score was 5-3 in favor of the Mammoths and they had hopes of being able to save the game. Despite having to capitalize once on 11 shots, it did give the Raiders a fighting chance in this game. It is thanks to Anderson that the Mammoths didn't continue and ended up on 8 or even 9 goals as their offence continued to blast through. For minimizing the damage on the scoresheet, he certainly deserves an unsung hero award.

BK's Spotlight Player: Daedric Heikennin

2 Goals
10:54 Ice Time
5 Shots

I think you start to see a trend with my spotlight players when one guy from one of your lesser lines scores more than once. In just under eleven minutes of time, Daedric found himself on the scoresheet in two periods. Scoring the opening goal as well as Colorado's 4th goal of the game, the 'Epitome of Dutch Drinks' had a night to remember in such little time. Colorado had a lot of momentum their way in that first period, led by the formentioned opening goal, and carried it onto the second period which was capped by his second. At one point, Colorado was leading 5-1, showing their absolute dominance that many people believed they had. If Daedric can continue his scoring touch, a promotion in terms of lines will have to be made for him.

How do you pronounce that name, anyways? Is it like Heineken?

Leafer's POTG

He was the 1st star of the game no question about that. 8th overall pick from the SHL Draft, Vratislav Zbyněk. Now obviously, there's one reason to why he's the 1st star and POTG and that is because he scored 2 goals but not only that. His 1st goal made it a one goal game bring hope to Colorado and his 2nd goal gave his team a lead! That's the big difference. He took 4 shots and was physical too with 3 hits. He played 20 minutes in the game and he was a +2! Now obviously being a +2 means you didn't allow so many goals you were on for 2 goals. But whatever, Vratislav Zbyněk was no question the best player in the game and you have ti deal with that!

Player Spotlight: Teddy Kesler

In this barn burner between the Colorado Mammoths and the Halifax Raiders there was one player who, although didn't necessarily provide anything flashy, did a ton to get his team back into a game where they fell behind early. Teddy Kesler provided two massive primary assists on goals to bring the Mammoths back within 1 goal of the Raiders and on the goal that put them into the lead. He was critical in developing plays that lead to these goals. As you might have guessed by now, I really like players that contribute in all phases of the game. Kesler put in 21 minutes this game with just under 5 minutes on the penalty kill. He was also critical in controlling the game for the Mammoths as he won nearly 66% of his faceoffs. He may have only gotten the 3rd star of the game but his role was entirely necessary for this gutsy Colorado 6-4 win.

Crossfit's Goal of the Game:

Vraistlav Zbynek had an absolute cannon of a shot against the Raiders as the goalie had absolutely no chance and this shows that Zbynek is the real deal and a very highly touted prospect for the West Kendall Platoon. Not mention the soft feed to him by Teddy Kesler as Kesler has been a threat in the SMJHL for the past few years now. The Mammoths have a solid one-two punch in Zbynek and Kesler as they look to reek havoc on the league.

1 - Vratislav Zbyněk (COL)
Goal 2 - Assist 0 – Point 2 - +/- = 2 Shots 4 – TOI 20:34 – Hits 3

Our first star of the evening is Zbyněk who was big factor in tonight’s match up. He scored two big goals, one in the first period and one in the second period and produced 4 shots on net and 3 hits.

2 - Vincent Garland (COL)
Goal 1 - Assist 2 – Point 3 - +/- = 3 Shots 5 – TOI 15:13

Garland is the second star tonight as he put up 3 points including his first goal of the season. He didn’t play super high minutes but still managed to lead the time with the most points tonight, he also produced a team high of 5 shots on net. He was all over the ice tonight in all of the right places.

3 - Teddy Kesler (COL)
Goal 0 - Assist 2 – Point 2 - +/- = 2 Shots 1 – TOI – 21:32- Hits 2

Finally, our last star is Teddy Kesler who had two assists tonight, one in the first period and one in the second… assisting on both of Zbyněk’s goals. He played high minutes tonight and even had 2 hits.

Turning Point

[b]Colorado's Second Period Defense[b/]

After giving up 3 goals on 10 shots in the first period to the Halifax Raiders, the Mammoth's coach must have given the rousing speech of a lifetime. The Mammoths came out angry as hell, and absolutely shut down the Raiders to the tune of 2 shots on goal (count em', 2) in the entire period! The defense played inspired after a lackluster 1st period, and the offense provided a consistent 2 goals per period. The mantra "Defense Wins Games" was on full display here, and especially in that dominant second period.

Most Underrated Player

Finn Larsson of The Colorado Mammoths continued his hot start to the season here in the second match-up between these teams in two days. With two assists here tonight Larsson added to his one goal one assist performance in last nights game. He has gone 65% on the draw to start the season, absolutely outstanding for The Calgary Dragon first rounder in S34.

#1 Bowl Smoker in the SMJHL

Vincent Garland once again the top bowl smoker in the SMJHL has shown here tonight he's got the talent to lead this Mammoths team in rips...on net with 5 shots against Halifax goaltender's FourFour Jr. and Jeremy Anderson. A goal and two assists through 15 minutes played was only enough for the 2nd start of the game.

Bustiest Flower...

Niklas Flower a 2nd round pick by fuckin Winnipeg in S31 was one of the few players with a -2 rating for the Raiders tonight. His first period assist on the Abes goal was a total fluke, Rhys tried to clear the zone and had Flower deflect it back to him at the Halifax line as he went for a change. That gave Rhys a second attempt to float one up to Abes for a partial breakaway on Jeremy Anderson.

The Limelight Lamp Lighter of the Game

Giving respect to one player of the game for out performing others in regards to intangibles, Game 5's 3LG is Brock Bailey. With five hits and two shot blocks, Bailey tallied one assist with 21-plus minutes of ice time. Unfortunately it wasn't enough as Halifax would fall to Colorado.

3 Stars

3. Hunter Hotchkiss Mammoths Hotchkiss had just one shot on goal, but it found the twine on the powerplay early in the third period. He added an assist earlier on in the game, and his goal turned out to be the most important one, as it would hold up as the game winner.

2. Vratisalv Zbynek Mammoths Zbynek tallied 2 goals in this one, with 4 shots and 3 hits for a really nice stat line in 20 minutes of ice time. After a wild first 3 minutes to the game that saw Halifax go up 3-1, Zbynek got the Mammoths back in it late in the first with just 4 to play. He added his second goal midway through the second period to put the Mammoths ahead for good.

1. Vincent Garland Mammoths He picked up 5 shots, and was a key factor in every important Mammoths goal. He picked up 3 points, a goal and 2 assists. He set up the first goal of the game just a minute in, and then 10 minutes through the second period, he scored a goal to tie the game up at 3. He then added an assist on the game winner early in the 3rd. All this in just 15 minutes of ice.

Heat Check

Vratislav Zbyněk

He scored more goals than any other player on the ice including a big goal that kept his team ahead midway in the game and kept the energy going. He had 2 goals in 4 shots and also led the team in hits, with 3. He showed up in a timely manner for the Mammoths and deserved the first star because of his grit.

VICE Sports GOON OF THE GAME:

It's......Brock Bailey, Halifax Raiders Defenseman!

Bailey had two minor penalties in this one, a hooking minor at 13:17 of the first period, and a roughing minor at 3:23 of the third period. He also had a game-leading five hits in 21:12 of ice time, also known as one RUSH song's worth of TOI (Units valid in Canada only). Now, the one question interview we run up and ask every Goon of the Game:

"Hey Bailey, why'd you take those two penalties? Sure didn't help your team out. Are you to blame for this loss?"

"Who the hell are you? Jesus, I'm in my towel."
