Calgary's next wave of firepower Meet the newest Dragons
#1

After a long and magical post season where the Calgary Dragons came within 2 games of winning the Challenge Cup championship.. players and management found themselves tired and ready for rest. A difficult position to be in with less than 48 hours to prepare for the most important Dragons draft in recent memory! See Calgary owned 4 of the first 28 picks in this ubber talented reddit draft and with regression upon a group of our players.. the opportunity was here to add the next wave of players ready to take over when called upon.

The draft team which consisted of 4 members parked themselves in our discord draft room and worked vigorously through the night! Danga kept the sheets, Joe spoke the knowledge, Esa weighed the options and i poured everyone continues fresh :coffee: emoji... and when it was all said and done we put forth a game plan which we were all proud of! For those in the know, this draft seemed to follow suit and with that every one of our targets came through giving us a tremendous influx of youth and talent to stand alongside Hunter Jones, our top pick from S37.

Below are the next wave of Dragon firepower

Ostap Maksimov, Ohtaay, D, selected 13th
With the 13th pick in the draft we were thrilled to acquire Ostap Maksimov, a ubber talented 6'2 defenceman originally from the Ales Smirnov acadamy in Moscow, before making his way to the SMJHL where he was drafted 20th by the Vancouver Whalers. Maksimov possesses a poise and skill set far beyond his years which played out in his rookie season where he lit up the junior circut scoring 25 points with a +21 and 55 blocks on a %19.05 shooting percentage! Maksimov missed the rookie scoring title by 2 points while leading the whole league in +-. yes them numbers pop out .. but what stood out for us was his professionalism... Ostap works hard off the ice seen by a robust 281 player build and an endorsement by Ales Smirnov himself who boasts a 15 season career in the SHL where he racked up 574 points. Calgarys defenders run a nice mix of older talent with Boychuk, PLL and O'Reilly and 2 bonified young studs in Roman Augustus and Casey Creller. Maksimov will join that dynamic young pairing in a couple of seasons in what should be a formidable defensive core for years to come.

Friedrich Schmidt, Dawegg G, selected 24th
If there was 1 thing which everyone in our draft room agreed with, it was to find a way to land Friedrich Schmidt. For those in the SHL who havent followed the juniors closely in S38... Schmidt is a hybrid goalie out of Wien, Austria who was taken 27th by the Scarecrows as there future replacement for current starter Johnny Yuma. Back up goalies typically don't get a lot of burn so it would have been easy to forget about Schmidt for the season... but Fredrich showcased one of the best work ethics in the SMJHL showed by his 288 TPE player build which ranks 11th out of the 87 players in his draft class! Schmidt started turning heads in practice late in the season and in an unforseen turn of events.. a clerical error made by Seattle deemed Johnny Yuma ineligible for the Scarecrows first round match up with the Whalers! Blink

With a team in flux all eyes looked towards Fredrich Schmidt. The rookies first game as the teams starting goalie took place in the playoffs where he put his team mates on his back and steamrolled past Vancouver in a shocking 4 game sweep! The Scarecrows finished post season just 2 games shy of the 4 star cup finals with Schmidt winning 6 of 9 games and making a name for himself as a bonified backstop. As top 100 goalie Dick Chocklate moves into his 1st season of regression, Dawegg looks to grab the baton in a couple of a seasons as the Dragons next guardian in goal.

Michael Fischer, esilverm, RW, Selected 27th
We spent allot of time in that draft room going over our list of needs and at the top of that list was a pass first playmaker to compliment the scoring abilities of Kurczewski, Forsberg and Izzy.. and what we found at pick 27 was the answer with St. Louis forward Michael Fischer. Selected 27th in the junior draft, Fischers ability to move the puck around with passing and puck handling strengths land him square in the middle of Calgarys future plans! On a talented scarecrow roster Fischer was asked to learn, improve and be ready for a hightened role in his sophmore season, and that is exactly what he did as the Vienna native built up a robust 255 point player build. Calgary has great ties to the St. Louis franchise with a unique view into the Scarecrow lockeroom where Fischer is considered an assett, an attribute important to the Calgary methodology. With Nicolas Pederson and Schnitinfritz Jagr deep in regression.. Fischer along with Hunter Jones stand to replace these 2 legendary Dragons as the teams distributing point producers.

Fenton Uriel, Pwnpiie, C, selected 28th
Fenten Uriel is a 6'4 inch 212 pound center from Canada who stormed into the SHL with a drive and activity rate reminiscent of a young Robert Phelps! Taken 2nd overall in a reddit draft, Uriel quickly captured first line duties for Kelowna while showcasing franchise player type abilities on the ice. With a start like this how did this high-powered prospect last until pick 28? Well late in the season Fenton's activity rate plummeted and his TPE rate stalled putting his can't miss label in jeopardy as the draft approached. Many teams passed on him believing he flamed out... The reality is Uriel's commitment to a multi month school could not be avoided leaving him just enough time to post his weekly point tasks. All reports from Kelowna state that Uriels return is expected making this risk reward pick by Calgary something to monitor. Missing a portion of the season Fenton boasts a 256 player build coming off of a 20 point, 113 hit rookie campaign.

Gustav Helzberg, 701 aka YUNG GUAP GOD, D, Selected 52nd
With the 52nd pick in the draft Calgary eagerly grabbed Swedish Sniper Gustav Helberg. The cousin of former 9 year defenceman Jackson Cartier, Helzberg possesses the skill and pedigree to make this a steal of the draft type selection. Helzbergs game was on cruise control during his rookie season with a moderate 225 point player build.. coming off a long and lengthy career can do that to recreates early in their next go round....making Calgary an ideal landing spot for Gustav as Esa knows how to get the maximum production out of each player on the ice. Helzberg had Calgary at the top of his list .. ingredients that make us excited about a long and prosperous future from this gifted young player.
