Game 41: Montreal Militia vs Detroit Falcons

Game Link

The game itself is kind of old news now, but with both teams fighting for the final playoff spot, it is looking like an important contest.

First Period: The Militia started the scoring off towards the end of the period, capitalizing on a hooking penalty committed by Hans Oldrich. Jim Elliot put the puck in the back of the net about 17 minutes through the period, with assists from Kyle Keenan Jr and Cedric Moreau. Two additional minor penalties were assessed on Militia players - Crystal Roy for slashing and Patrick Brumm Jr for hooking. Their teammates came through for them on the penalty kill, resulting in a 1-0 Montreal lead after one.

Second Period: Montreal again waited a long time during the period to slam one home, with a goal at the 19:37 mark. This one was scored by Barbie Tanner, with some fancy playmaking coming from Alexander McKinley and Michael Owens. The Falcons picked up several penalties this period, including what was probably a high sticking out of frustration committed by Bob Bergen just 5 seconds after the Militia goal. Viktor Kolesnikovs picked up a delay of game call and Quick Mafs was guilty of goalie interference, spending 2 minutes each in the sin bin.

Third Period: About 5 minutes into the period, the Falcons were finally able to mount a comeback attempt, putting the game back within reach at a score of 2-1. Grayson St. Raegan was responsible for the goal, with some help from Filip Armstrong and Heidi Aho. The real nail in the coffin for Detroit came a little over 4 minutes later on, as Barbie Tanner struck back with a vengeance, scoring for a second time. For the second goal, Krists Zommers and Artemi Berezin contributed to Barbie's effort. A couple more penalties were committed by the Militia this time around, but the Falcons couldn't get their power play going and it was all for naught, leaving us with the final result of 3-1 in favor of Montreal.

The first star of the game should come as no surprise - Barbie Tanner. Tanner put 2 goals in the net on only 3 shots, resulting in a +2 rating. Barbie also picked up a shot block in a little under 11 minutes of work - not a bad showing overall. Next up we have Jim Elliot taking home the second star award. Elliot was a true special teams wizard for the Militia, both scoring on the power play and putting in about 4 minutes on the ice during their success at penalty killing. Elliot also tied for the game lead with 4 shots blocked. Finally, our third star is another member of the Militia, Krists Zommers. Zommers didn't have much ice time, but assisted on one of Barbie's goals and picked up a +2 rating to match that of Tanner.

My fourth star for the game would be the Militia goalkeeper Cedric Moreau. Moreau actually faced more shots than his counterpart on the Falcons, but managed to turn all but one of them away, good for a .952 save percentage. Meanwhile, part of the problem for Detroit was that three players on the ice for over 20 minutes - Bob Bergen, Quick Mafs, and Viktor Kolesnikovs - weren't able to contribute much more than a single shot block and a couple penalty minutes.

First Star: Barbie Tanner
The first star of the game was earned by tanner, who was unquestionably the driving offensive force for the Militia in this game, helping them to earn their 3-1 victory over the Detroit Falcons. Tanner was responsible for two of the aforementioned three goals that the Militia scored during this game, one scored in the second period, while the other was the final goal scored in the entire game, during the third period.

With a little less than thirty seconds remaining in the second period Tanner managed to score his fourth goal of the entire season, giving the Militia a firm two to nothing lead over the Falcons. If that wasn’t enough, Tanner managed to score his fifth goal of the season, and the second in the entire game, with a little over nine minutes into the third period of the game.

Tanner scoring his second goal of the game.

On the defensive end of the game, Tanner was just as impressive as well, as he possessed an impressive plus/minus of +2 through the duration of the game. It’s Tanner’s offensive prowess combined with his defensive responsibility that allowed him to rightfully become the first star of this game.

Second Star: Jim Elliot
While not as prolific offensively as Tanner for this game, Elliot still managed to score the only other goal that the Militia managed to get pass Falcons’ goaltender Sebastien Primeau, throughout the entirety of the game.

With that being said, Elliot’s goal can be viewed as the catalyst for the Militia’s success through the entire game, as he scored the very first goal of the game (for both teams), giving them the early momentum and lead. Elliot’s goal occurred with a little less than three minutes remaining in the first period, and it was arguably the highlight goal of the game, as can be seen directly below.

Elliot's incredibly impressive and highlight goal in all its glory!

Aside from scoring one of the three goals that the Militia managed to earn that game, Elliot can also be considered a horse and consistent presence on the ice for them. Elliot was second on the entire team in minutes played on the ice that game, with twenty two minutes and twenty seconds of ice-time being registered on his behalf. Elliot’s previously mentioned goal and endurance on the ice is what allowed him to earn the second star of the game honors.

Third Star: Krists Zommers
Last but certainly not least is Zommers, who earned third star of the game honors for his, perhaps, underrated play and impact on the game. Zommers did not manage to register a goal for the Militia this game, but he did manage to do two important things on the ice. First, Zommers was a solid playmaker on the ice, as he was responsible for primary assist on Tanner’s second goal of the game, during the midway point of the third period.

Zommers with an impressive check on defense.

The second and most likely more underrated aspect of Zommers performance was his defensive prowess on the ice. Thought Zommers only managed to register a single point during the game, he managed to earn a plus/minus stat of +2. This shows that Zommers was not only active on offensively success shifts, but that he was also defensively impressive in not allowing the Falcons to offensively produce while he was on the ice. This defensive tenacity combined with his assist is why he earned the third start of the game honors, though he may have gone a bit under the radar with his play from the stat sheet alone.

My turning point for this game has to be Barbie Tanner's fourth goal of the season, coming in the 2nd period. Before Tanner scored this goal at the 19 minutes and 37 second mark of the 2nd period. Before Barbie Tanner scored, the Militia had scored 1 goal in the game, and the Falcons were looking like they could make it into the 3rd period down by one. But Tanner put any ends to that hope, putting a dagger into the hearts of the Falcons, just seconds before the period ended. Once the 3rd period started, the Falcons scored just over 5 minutes in, to bring the game within 1, but if it weren't for the goal by Barbie Tanner, it would have been tied. And just over 4 minutes later the Militia scored the insurance marker, to give them the 3-1 win. So because the goal scored was the game winner, and possibly effected the Falcons player, that I think it's the turning point of the game.

RIP Mac & 701
