S42 SMJHL Draftees into Pokemon Conversion
#1

My apologies to whoever has to grade this; I need dat cash. I can provide my spreadsheets and such if need be; I spent a lot of time on this although I have no idea what the word count works out to. Also double media for the draft related content please!

Hey everyone (mostly the SMJHL rookies I tagged), welcome to another edition of my seasonal quest to perfect PAHSI (Pokemon Attribute from Hockey Skill Interpreter). That’s right, based on the way you spent your TPE - and with a few other changes for this season - you end up being changed into a particular Pokemon (like Bill from Gen. 1 for you old-timers out there). Here’s what I ran with two seasons ago (had to take a season off last time around, sorry S41 class) :

Code:
[align=center]Skaters:

HP = (Endurance + 0.25*Strength) / 1.25
Attack = Scoring
Defense = (Defense + 0.25*Strength) / 1.25
Special Attack = (Passing + 0.5*Puck Handling) / 1.5
Special Defense = (Checking + 0.5*Puck Handling + 0.25*Strength) / 1.75
Speed = (Skating + 0.25*Strength) / 1.25

Goalies:

HP = Endurance
Attack = (Size + 0.5*Skating) / 1.5
Defense = (Rebound Control + 0.5*Agility) / 1.5
Special Attack = (Puck Handling + 0.5*Skating) / 1.5
Special Defense = (Style Control + 0.5*Agility) / 1.5
Speed = (Hand Speed + Reaction Time) / 2

All of that worked decently well so I won’t be changing it, but I didn’t like how some players ended up as similar or identical Pokemon despite having at least somewhat varied builds. So I have one change going into effect this season and hope to both refine that and implement another for next season. The big change tries to emulate the Natures aspect of Pokemon – even amongst one particular species there is variation, as some are faster at the cost of attack, and vice versa, and the same goes for every other attribute set. For us, this means that a player’s strengths and weakness modify the usual values for that skill. A player’s strengths get a 5% bonus, while the one weakness gets a 10% decrease. Additionally, since I still haven’t worked face offs into this stuff and I saw many centers with a face off strength/they also spent a bunch of TPE in that, I decided to at least work that into the Nature idea. Therefore, a player with a Face Off strength will get a 10% bonus applied to each of special attack and special defense, representing their ability to either start an attack or prevent the other team from doing so.
The one other area that I’ve started on but needs some refinement adds a Size component (separate from the goalkeeper’s size attribute) that basically acts as another attribute. I found a list of every Pokemon that had their heights and weights, and after parsing the data somewhat in the easiest possible way I got the heights in meters and weights in pounds. Obviously those don’t match up at all, so I then divided each by the average of all Pokemon to somewhat normalize the data. Finally, I divided the new height value by the new weight value in order to get a sense for the size and shape of a Pokemon. To get a value for hockey players - since there doesn’t seem to be an actual scale established for player creation - I looked up the average height and weight of an adult male (as far as I could tell all of the players in this draft class are male - I apologize if that is incorrect and plan on introducing changes for that in the future anyways). The data I found which I believe is for Americans but is good enough for our purposes is 69.2 inches and 195.7 pounds. So that will get me the normalized height/weight ratio I need to compare to Pokemon. Unfortunately, so far the size attribute just completely overwhelms everything else percentage wise, so it skews the results and I won’t be using it yet.
For each player (of the 77 created and approved players as of me writing this, I apologize to those creating closer to draft time), I’ll provide their attributes in Pokemon terms, the name of the best Pokemon comparison, and that Pokemon’s attributes. I’ll also go into the Smogon tier of that Pokemon (essentially its competitive viability at this time) to give GM’s a heads-up on who to pick in the upcoming draft, since clearly this is the best way to determine draft selections. I’ll interject comments throughout as well as time allows – there’s so freaking many of you guys this time around but I’ll do my best! As you’ll notice soon I didn’t have time to write about the hockey skill side of things too – look that up for yourself you lazy bum! Hopefully that was enough of an explanation, time to get through as many players as I can now. Get at me if you have suggestions for the future or comments/questions for now!

Kind of a strange ‘mon with several different forms, this thing has literally zero usefulness in competitive Pokemon. It has been relegated to the PU tier, the lowest of them all.

The first (of many as it turns out) Mega Salamence comparisons. These are definitely the guys you want to draft GM’s – this ‘mon has been relegated to the Uber tier for being way too good, and is banned in most normal competitive Pokemon fights.

This adorable little guy is a member of the Little Cup competitive group for being a Pokemon that can still evolve and is obtainable at level 5 in game. I don’t think it gets used much even there, though after evolution it’s a pretty fierce lion.

Seadra is basically nonexistent for competition purposes – it can’t be in the Little Cup because it evolved from Horsea, and there’s not any reason to use it over its evolution Kingdra. Personally I don’t mind going old school though, and I think it was pretty strong back in the day.

This mon is basically the result of Nintendo deciding that Poliwag/Poliwhirl/Poliwrath wasn’t good enough and trying again with a tadpole/toad/swole-bro line. Competitively it falls in that weird spot of 2nd evolutions in that they just aren’t used basically.

Another proud Little Cup representative, I believe the idea here was to repurpose Tentacool as a squid, though somehow this thing is Dark-Psychic and not some kind of Water type. Also it only evolves in games when the system is held upside down, so please don’t drop Crush on his head when trying to do the same for him.

Nintendo decided Electabuzz and Magmar weren’t cool enough to begin with so they came up with this guy and Magmortar as evolutions. I disagree with the decision myself and neither member of this evolution tree is competitively viable anyways, but I may just be a purist.

Because of its evolution and without being eligible for Little Cup competition, it isn’t really used anywhere, which is a shame because it comes up several more times.

Mega Charizard Y is my preference, though this one finally picks up the Dragon typing which is also pretty sick. This one is also much more competitively viable, as I believe this was actually the first member of the Overused (OU) tier so far. OU is the most oftenly used set of guidelines for these type of Pokemon battles, and being part of the tier is a really good indicator of Pokemon power.

Another of the newer Pokemon, it was super annoying to find and catch and, once it evolves and if you spent a ton of time looking for the Regenerator hidden ability, it becomes super annoying for everyone else to fight against. Specifically with Regenerator it is quite popular in the Little Cup, and after evolving into Toxapex it moves up to OU and really dominates there too.

Here we have the actual god of the Pokemon universe, as Wormster hacked the system by having such a well-balanced build that the best comparisons were all Pokemon with identical attributes across the board. This actually happened several times in past seasons, but is the only one this time around. As should be pretty obvious, it is an overpowered member of the Uber tier in Pokemon’s competitive scene.

We had Natu earlier and now we get its evolution, one of the most-chill looking Pokemon in existence and one of only 3 with names starting with an X. It even manages to rise slightly above that PU tier into the Neverused territory, apparently finding a home in teams by removing the entry hazards set down by the opposing team. So don’t try dropping any spikes on the ice around this guy.

The claim to fame for this fish is that the name makes it easily mistakable for an evolution of Eevee (Flareon, Jolteon, Vaporean, etc.). It is also useable in the Little Cup tier for a similar role as what I described for Xatu a few comparisons ago; it gets rid of obstacles placed against your team while not being awful otherwise.

Another grass starter popping up, this one from all the way back in gen 2. Probably one of the more familiar mons for the more casual followers of the games/show/everything that Pokemon does. At this stage of the evolution line, it is solely in the Little Cup, and doesn’t seem to find any real success there.

Hey did you know that Ekans is snake spelt backwards? Oh everyone knows that by now? Anyways, this intimidating gen 1 poison type has a pretty significant role in the Little Cup competitions, as it uses a move called Coil to continuous boost its own attack and defense before unleashing a strong attack such as Earthquake; with the right support around it, Ekans is able to sweep the entirety of the opposing team of Pokemon right off the ice.

Somehow it took all the way until the sixth generation of Pokemon for them to make this Poodle thing. You can give it haircuts in game, a truly useless feature that I can’t imagine anyone actually using.
