PGS S46 Game 74: Detroit vs Vancouver
#1

Detroit Falcons get shutout 4-0 by the Vancouver Whalers

Falcons Detroit Falcons 0 - 4 Vancouver Whalers Whalers

Scoring Summary

1st Period:

No Scoring

While there were no goals in the first period it certainly wasn't devoid of action. There were 5 penalties called in the first period, 3 against Detroit and 2 against Vancouver. In the first 20 seconds of the game Borromini Cannellini got called for tripping Jimmy Cahill after Cahill intercepted a pass made by Petr Mikulak in the neutral zone. 2 minutes and 30 seconds later Oleg Scoreov got a roughing penalty on Igor Volkov after Volkov intercepted Scoreov's pass. Later in the period, just before the halfway point, Wibbly McButternutz cross-checked Jax Duggan multiple times earning himself 2 minutes in the box. Good on Duggan for keeping his cool and getting his team a powerplay. Just past 15 minutes into the period William Goose got a holding penalty against Lunga Gumba. As Gumba was skating by Goose reached out and held his arm for a brief second, was definitely one of the weaker calls of the game, but still a penalty nonetheless. The last penalty of the period was called 2 and a half minutes later when Przemysław Brzeszczyczkiewicz got his stick up into the face of Joe Ackroyd, getting a high sticking call. Even with all these penalties, neither team could get anything going in the first.

2nd Period:

Vancouver Whalers Goal - Borromini Cannellini 9 (Petr Mikulak 8, Bernik Vrzala 9) at 0:43 Falcons 0 - 1 Whalers

Cannellini gets his 9th goal of the season just 43 seconds into the second period. After a shot by Cannellini goes wide Petr Mikulak picks up the puck in the corner, skates up the side boards and makes a nice move to get around the defender getting himself into the upper slot where he fires a shot that's deflected by Cannellini up into the top corner of the net.

Vancouver Whalers Goal - Andy Kerr 1 (Bernik Vrzala 10) at 8:41 Falcons 0 - 2 Whalers

Midway through the second period Andy Kerr finds the back of the net with a quick one-timer for his first goal of the season. After a bad giveaway by Jimmy Cahill in the Falcons zone, Bernik Vrzala ends up with the puck with Kerr open just below the faceoff dot on the left side of Jakub Hasek. Vrzala passes it over to Kerr for a nice one-timer that goes top shelf giving Hasek almost no chance.

3rd Period:

Vancouver Whalers Goal - Sami Raanta 1 (Carlo Russo 8, Jeremy Chen 1) at 6:59 Falcons 0 - 3 Whalers

Sami Raanta gets his first goal in the SMJHL and gets it on a beauty of a goal. After a shot from Carlo Russo is blocked by Wibbly McButternutz in front of the net, Raanta manages to pull the puck out of McButternutz's feet, goes forehand, backhand and lifts the puck over the outstretched pad of Hasek for a great first goal he'll remember for a long time.

Vancouver Whalers Goal - Borromini Cannellini 10 (Bernik Vrzala 11, Andy Kerr 6) at 7:52 (PP) Falcons 0 - 4 Whalers

After Jimmy Cahill gets a penalty for slashing, Cannellini gets his second goal of the game on the powerplay midway through the third period. Vrzala carries the puck into the Falcons zone and makes a drop pass to Cannellini who snipes a shot over the shoulder of Hasek. Probably one that Hasek should have had, but you can't blame him too much as he didn't get much support from his team.

Three Stars of the Game
1st Star -  Bernik Vrzala Whalers
2nd Star - Borromini Cannellini Whalers
3rd Star - Andy Kerr Whalers

Tony's Stars of the game:

1. Casimir Stevens  Whalers (18 shots, 18 saves - 1.000)

This game was a tale of two goalies, with Hasuk posting just .833, while Stevens saved 18 shots in this shutout. This wasn't a game where one side massively outshot the other, so you have to give Stevens the credit for causing the scoreline to appear so one-sided. An impressive outing for his second shutout of the season.

2. Bernik Vzala  Whalers (0G, 3A)

Bernik played an excellent offensive game, getting 2 primary assists and a secondary assist. He might be disappointed that a change cost him +3, so his +/- wasn't as nice as it could've been, but he will be happy with posting the points. He also had a couple of shots to add to Vancouver's tally.

3. Borromini Cannellini  Whalers (2G, 0A)

Vancouver's captain once again had an excellent showing here. He was the difference in shots between the two sides, and his two goals (including the GWG) were both excellent. He'll also be glad to add another Power Play goal to the tally.

What happened in the first period?

There were 5 penalties in the first period of the game, meaning half of the period was spent on power play for one side or the other. Neither team, however, managed to post a goal (and there were only a fairly dismal 11 shots in total on the period). While league power play numbers are sitting around about 20%, both of these sides are failing to even convert 1 in 6 (both are sitting around about 15% on the PP through the season). This game may be endemic of a greater problem in both of these team's power play units, which is that they simply aren't taking enough shots on goal. With neither side posting more than 2 shots on any of their power play attempts, they were never looking like scoring in this period. In a total of 10 power plays in the game (just under a period spent on the PP), only one goal was scored, by Cannellini in the 3rd. If these teams want to be real contenders at the end of the season, this seems like the right place to start.

Shot suppression, or why it could have been a whole lot worse for Detroit:

This game saw Vancouver have a dominant performance, despite only outshooting Detroit 24 to 18. One indicator of how dominant Vancouver's performance was is the fact that their defensemen hardly blocked any shots, yet still they managed to dominate the shot count. Vancouer managed to post just 3 shots blocked, which is worryingly low. That brings the total shots that may have been on goal to 21 by Detroit. Detroit, meanwhile, posted 12 shots blocked, a much more healthy rate of shot suppression, because those shots would've bought Vancouver up to 36. This could've brought Vancouver to almost double the shots of Detroit, which would've been an incredibly dominating performance. So Detroit got off lucky. But these numbers may be of concern to Vancouver, as rates of shot suppression are high across the league. Then again, this is more likely to be a freak result, as Vancouver lead the league in shots blocked. Either way, this is an interesting indicator of Vancouver's offensive dominance, and maybe sheds more light on why the 4-0 scoreline isn't so bad for Detroit.

Audi Star of the Game: Borromini Cannellini Whalers
This game's Audi Star of the Game is Vancouver's Borromini Cannellini. Cannellini's fantastic night led the Whalers to a dominant victory over the Falcons as he opened the scoring 43 seconds in and then scored a late power play goal to put the final nail in the coffin in this one. Cannellini was a huge part of Vancouver's dominance even when he wasn't scoring as his 6 shots and him going 10/21 in the faceoff circle helped Vancouver control the pace of the game and generate offense in his 20 minutes of ice time. Tonight's star of the game comes as no surprise as Cannellini has lit up the opposition all season long.

Tide Flop of the Game: Josh Driver Falcons
Tonight's Tide Flop of the Game is Detroit's Josh Driver. The Falcons depth just wasn't up to the task tonight as they were out matched by their Vancouver counterparts for much of the night. Driver was a big part of this as he went a lowly 3 for 9 in the faceoff circle giving Vancouver a lot of control of the game, Driver was also a -2 on the night as his 4th line got absolutely pounded in their small amount of ice time. Driver wasn't really able to generate much going the other way either as he finished the night with 1 shot on goal in a game that he'd surely like to forget quickly.

Tesla Key to the Game: Finishing
Tonight's Tesla Key to the Game is finishing. There wasn't really that much between the two teams tonight the deeper you look into this game as the shots were fairly even, the physicality and faceoffs were pretty close and both teams were equally average on the power play. The major difference between the two teams was finishing as Vancouver only had 5 more shots than Detroit's 19 but finished with 4 more goals in a night where their shooters were just much more lethal than Detroit's resulting in a very disproportionate score line.

Vancouver Performer: You have to give the nod here to their goaltender Casimir Stevens as the Whalers were outshot 6-5 in the first and were shorthanded twice. He stood tall while their offense was quiet and gave them a chance to come out in the second period and win the game. You really can't ask for much more from your goaltender and Stevens remained perfect for the next two periods in putting up an 18 save shutout to help Vancouver earn the 4-0 win over Detroit.

Detroit Fugly: As we talked about Vancouver's strong defensive and goaltending effort in the last point, you've gotta be disappointed with the effort shown by the Falcons offense tonight both at even strength and on the power play. They were a pitiful 0 for 4 with the man advantage and not much better at even strength, putting up a solid 0 goals and getting generally run over by the Whalers. Coach will be asking for a better effort from them next game.

Comment One - First Round Focus:
In this segment, we will break down the impact that each team's first-round selection from the S46 draft had on today's game.
Falcons Espen Knutsen Jr. ©
Espen did not have a productive game at all, proving detrimental along with his teammates' performances. Knutsen Jr. slotted in on the third line next to Gabster TheMagnificent and Lex Peters. Espen recorded 0 points, was on the ice for no even-strength goals against, but had 2 penalty minutes, and a shot in his 12:55 of ice time. Despite spending almost 4 minutes on the powerplay with his unit, Knutsen Jr. could not produce, and was not a bright spot in Detroit's loss tonight.
Whalers Jax Duggan (D)
Jax played a strong defensive game tonight which allowed his developed veteran teammates to take control of the game and blowout Detroit. While playing significant minutes on the second pairing for Vancouver, Duggan recorded 0 points, contributed to no goals for, put his team on the penalty kill once, and had 3 hits in almost 21 minutes of ice time. Jax's physical presence was felt in the game and was definitely a factor in tonight's victory without being on the scoresheet.
Comment Two - Who was Hot?
Forward of the Game - Whalers Borromini Cannellini
Borromini received second-star honors in tonight's victory in credit to his two-goal performance which included the game-winning goal early in the second period. He also blocked a shot and won just under half of his faceoffs while playing first-line minutes for the Whalers. Vancouver's strong first line showed up tonight and was the main factor for their success against the Falcons.
Defenseman of the Game - Whalers Bernik Vrzala
Bernik was named the first star of the game after his excellent offensive showing in tonight's game. His stat line included 3 assists, a +2 rating, and a shot all while playing the most defensive minutes on his team. Vrzala is a key #1 defenseman that plenty of team's around the league would covet, and he will play a huge role in the Whaler's run for the championship.
Goaltender of the Game - Whalers Casimir Stevens
Thanks to strong defensive team performances, Stevens only faced 18 shots the entire game but recorded a shutout by saving all of them. The SMJHL is a high-scoring league where shutouts are scarce so Vancouver should be thankful they have such a wall to backstop them this season.
Comment Three - Who was Not?
Liable Forward of the Game - Falcons Josh Driver and Savoli Tankovic
The fourth line for the Falcons saw sheltered minutes but still managed to be on the ice for 2 goals against, digging their team a hole that proved insurmountable. 3 shots is all this line could muster the whole game, and they must improve in the coming games or the coach may be forced to give their minutes to more consistent players.
Liable Defenseman of the Game - Falcons Stolp Skottson and Jimmy Cahill
The entire defensive group for the Falcons failed to show up for today's game but these two are the veterans who are expected to lead in minutes, offensive production and defensive reliability and they could not distinguish themselves from the other pairings. They were on the ice for a goal against, combined for 2 penalty minutes, and only recorded 1 hit. Detroit should be expecting and getting more out of their veterans if they hope to make a cup push this season.
Liable Goaltender of the Game - Falcons Jakub Hasek
His defense, while not playing their absolute best, held Vancouver to just 24 shots and 4 of those shots got past Hasek tonight. Compared to goaltending averages around the league, the performance tonight was abysmal to say the least, and unless Jakub wants to let Luke Derion steal the starting spot, then the numbers must improve.

Comment One:
Sami Raanta finally scores first goal

It was a long and tough wait for the young finnish centerman Sami Raanta, but the junior player for the Vancouver Whalers was finally able to score his first SMJHL goal in the 4-0 victory over the Detroit Falcons. "Of course that is something I always dreamed of but it is so much more satisfying to do it when your team wins" said a very happy Raanta after the game. His goal came in the third period to make it a 3-0 nothing, so his goal pretty much sealed the deal for the Vancouver Whalers. His goal was assisted by Carlo Russo and Jeremy Chen.

Comment Two:
Penalty Kill comes through

Special teams are a very big factor in hockey and today, especially the penalty kill came through for the Vancouver Whalers. They went to the Penalty Kill four times and were able to stop the Falcons from scoring in all of them. The Penalty Kill Unit was lead by young forward Aaron Wilson who spend more than four minutes on the kill. The next player on the Whalers was Petr Mikulak with nearly three minutes. So Wilson was showing his worth here and was able to lead his team on to stop the Falcons powerplay and to help the Whalers get a shutout.

Comment Three:
Casimir Stevens stops everything

Young goalie Casimir Stevens had a fantastic night and stopped all 18 shots by the Detroit Falcons to get a shutout and his eigth win of the season. Obviously, his team did a superb job and held the Falcons to only 18 shots but still, Stevens showed off his elite skills and will be an important piece to the Whalers team for years to come. With his play, Stevens was able to grab the 1st star on the night. His counterpart Hasek didn't do as well unfortunately, stopping only 20 of 24 shots tonight, suffering his eigth loss of the season.

Comment 1: Game of Firsts
The Whalers came out to play against the Falcons. However, it was a game of firsts for 3 Whalers. Both Andy Kerr and Sami Raanta notched their first goals of the season, whereas Jeremy Chen got himself his first assist of the year. While the Whalers' scoring was still dominated by the top unit, they got themselves some much needed depth contribution. The Whalers have been struggling to get scoring from the secondary players, and this was a perfect game to get the monkey off players' backs. With a lot of effort being shown in every game, it finally paid off for these Whalers. Multiple pucks had to be kept after this game!

Comment 3: Whalers Season Storyline: Special Teams
When you win 4-0 you would think there was nothing you did which could be improved upon, right? Wrong. The story of the Whalers' season has been their poor performance with their special teams. While they did manage to score a powerplay goal in this game, they squandered 5 other opportunities to score with the man advantage. The Whalers have tinkered with their special teams units in their most recent games, but this poor play early on is a big part as to why they are struggling.

Now while the powerplay was an area of concern, the Whalers were perfect on the penalty kill. They gave the Falcons 4 opportunities to score with the man advantage and successfully killed them all off. This could be a step in the right direction at improving this. While the Whalers are struggling this season, they should work on the details of the game and improve as the season goes on

Comment 3: Defensive Prowess
It's hard to have defensive issues when you win with a shutout, and we're going to see just how dominant the Whalers were on the defensive end of the puck in this game. They managed to keep the Falcons to 18 shots in the game, while giving up a total of 3 shots in the second period. THREE! Absolutely incredible play by the back end, playing fundamentally sound, sticking to the game plan and making Sevens' night an easy one (besides giving Detroit 4 powerplay opportunities). The play of all players on the ice on the defensive side of the puck was incredible, as they only needed to block 3 shots. All other opportunities were either led wide or simply shut down before Detroit could even see the net.
