(This post was last modified: 05-05-2019, 10:39 AM by ej27.)

As a rookie, you have a lot to learn and a long way to go, and the veterans in the league are the ones who have already made it. But where were they when they were just like you? It's time to find out.

Task

Pick a senddown on one of the leaderboards and compare their performance so far this season with their performance in their rookie season. You can either make a graphic with a render and 4 stats, or write at least 200 words that include 3 stats.

Reward
4 TPE for doing the thing. (Just one, not both.)

Only S47 SMJHL Rookies (S48 SHL Rookies) are eligible for this PT.

You cannot claim TPE for this PT until a post is made in the global claim thread.

Post a link to PBE or NSFL PTs here to get credit for welfare claims.

Comparing Jules Watt’s Rookie Season (S45) to the Midway Point of S47

When Jules Watt first came into the league, he would tell you himself that he considered himself as a defensive defenseman. As a rookie looking to get his first taste of the SMJHL, Jules Watt found himself pairing Colorado’s third defensive pairing with Chico Smeb. He found his way on special teams as he was manning the point of the second power play unit but still only managed to play an average of 16 minutes a game. In his rookie season, Watt had 1 goal and 8 points, with just 17 shots on net and 27 shots blocked. As played were starting to get called up to their respective SHL franchises, Jules got better and better and got an opportunity in Season 47 to finally show what he can do. Surprisingly, it’s his offense that has the Raptors and their fans rejoicing. His role has significantly increased as he now finds himself on the second defensive unit but seeing a huge increase in ice-time (22 minutes), as well as being on every special teams’ unit. At the midway point of the season, Jules Watt has scored 7 goals and 18 points, with 35 shots on net and 38 blocked shots. He is tied with Nick Brain as the point leaders for the Colorado Raptors. He finds himself 3rd in the league in shooting percentage, tied for 8th in the league in defenseman scoring, tied for 2nd in the league in power play goals and finds himself amongst the top 10 in shots blocked. Jules Watt is truly becoming one of the top defenseman in the SMJHL and the third year player is one of the bright spots on a struggling Colorado Raptors squad.

Taken first overall in the  season 46 SMJHL entry draft the Halifax Raiders selected the towering 7 foot tall and 350 pounds, Esa Parmborg. Hailing from Hella, Iceland, Parmborg had a decent season in his first season in the the SMJHL. Due to the depth Halifax had at center he was forced to play out of position on the wing on the third line. Through 50 games Parmborg amasses 6 goals and 9 assists for 15 points and an average ice time of 13.70 minutes per game. In his second season with the raiders Esa has already surpassed his point total through 27 of the 50 games in a season. So far this year Parmborg has 6 goals and 11 assists totalling 17 points with an average ice time of 16.38 minutes per game. In his second season Esa is playing in his preferred position anchoring the second line as the raiders number 2 Center. While his point totals have significantly increased the stronger competition of second line match ups have proved to still be an issue on the defensive side of his game. In his first season on the third line Esa finished with a -8 and in his second season he is currently sitting at -7 through 27 games. Hopefully Parmborg and the rest of the Halifax raiders will be able to take control of their defensive woes and make a deep playoff run with all eyes set on winning the four star cup!

This week, Siberia Sports wants to take a look at the performance of the St. Louis Scarecrows forward Filip Zadina between his rookie season with the squad and his draft +1 season.  When looking at his rookie year and then his second season, one word comes to mind: improvement.  He's improved his game in almost every metric.

There are a few interesting stats to note between the two seasons.  For instance, in his rookie year Zadina scored 14 points over the course of his 50 games played.  That's good for .28 points per game.  A number the team definitely wanted to improve to his next year.  In his second season, Zadina has scored 24 points in 30 games played.  That's good for a .8 points per game so far this season.  That's a drastic improvement and the Scarecrows are reaping the benefit.

Another point of improvement is Zadina's shooting.  In his rookie year he took 66 shots in 50 games.  Just over a shot per game average.  In his second year he has shot 94 shots in 30 games so far.  That's over 3 shots per game on average.  A huge improvement.  This shows that his goals aren't coming from luck this season as his shooting percentage has only gone up by 1 percent since last year.  He's finding space and taking his shots more, and he's being rewarded for it in the goals column.

The last stat to look at is his time on the power play.  I his rookie season, Zadina only played 4 minutes of power play time.  In his second season he is up to 88!  This shows he's gained the coaches' trust as an offensive force and is being expected to create offense on the power play.  A good sign for an up and coming star in the league.

Charlie Serpe was selected 15th overall in the S46 SMJHL entry draft by the St. Louis Scarecrows, fresh off their back to back Four Star Cup victory.  The defender was put in right into the St. Louis line-up during his rookie season, posting some solid rookie numbers.  He finished off his rookie season with 20 points and ending with an even 0 +/-.  Just over half way through this season, Charlie’s second, he has almost passed his point totals (17 points so far this season) and is at a +8.

Where we notice our first major difference between his two seasons is how he racked those points up.  During his rookie campaign, Charlie scored one goal, and chipped in with 19 helpers.  This year is a different story, Serpe has already notched 8 goals and added 9 assists.  He has really shown that during the offseason, he focussed on improving his shot and now is a threat to put the puck into the net.  To further this, let’s look at Charlie’s shooting percentage.  As mentioned earlier, Charlie scored one goal as a rookie, taking 37 shots to get that one goal.  That put his rookie seasons SHT % at 2.7%.  This year, it’s a whole other ball game.  Charlie sports the 3rd best SHT% in the league, at 19.51%, when Serpe winds up for a shot, 1 out of 5 times, that puck has found the back of the net.  That’s nuts.  Keep shooting that puck Charlie!

Next, we are going to look at an often overlooked stat, shots blocked.  Charlie blocked a total of 40 shots last season, that’s 40 shots that his keeper didn’t have to attempt to save, that’s not bad at all.  But Charlie has really stepped it up this season, he has already blocked 44 shots this season, that’s roughly 1.5 shots per game and good enough to have Charlie sitting 5th overall in blocked shots in the SMJHL.

These gains between Charlie’s rookie season and this seasons shows that a defender, who puts in the work can be a huge benefit to his team on both ends of the ice, Sepre’s has honed his ability to position himself in the defensive zone to block opponents shots on his own net, while finding that scoring touch to help lead his team in the offensive zone.

I have picked to do mine on the forward player Theo Morgan of the Vancouver Whalers. Hey managed to put 7 points total which came from scoring 4 times and getting 3 assists during his season 46 run of playing 50 games. Of these respective points it is worth noting that 1 of the 4 goals and 2 of the assists he got were on power plays.

However, just 30 games in Theo Morgan is showing a vast improvement. Currently still having 20 games still to play he is currently on 8 goals and 9 assists which equal 17 points. Already 10 points clear of his season 46 tally. To be fair statistically if we compare how many came from the power play as well it is 4 power play goals and 5 power play assists totalling about half of his points came from power plays again but the improvement his has show with how many points he has managed to get is clear in just over half a season is clear for anyone to see. I hope to improve to the same degree next season. He has 328 minute difference between his minutes played currently which he should easily hit with 20 games remaining and he is almost all but confirmed to continue to widen the gap between his season 46 and season 47 statistics.

Cullen Gray led the league in rookie scoring in S46 with an outstanding 35 points. So far this season he has already hit 22 points, and is the #7 Left Wing. He hasnt had a monstrous season, but what he has shown is consistent growth, and in my opinion that is more impressive than just putting up high numbers. In a league where the level of competition you face becomes tougher every season, and to be able to develop steadily are both challenges that can be overwhelming to a young star. Cullen Gray has shown that he can do both of these things, I believe that he will be a star in Tampa Bay for a long time coming. Will he lead the league in scoring? Maybe no, but he will be consistent.
Even though he is playing on a good Vancouver team, Cullen has shown the ability to lead his line. 4th in team scoring, far below a point per game, but he is still contributing regularly. Both of those things bode well for both Vancouver and Tampa Bay moving forward. He very well could end up being a defensive stalwart in the league, which is an underappreciated talent for a forward in a league and generation where the ability to put a puck in the back of the net is valued above all.

Espen Knutsen Jr.

Stat One: 4 goals vs. 14 goals
Goal scoring is a very important stat in the game of hockey. Without goal scoring, your team cannot win the game. Knutsen Jr. in his rookie season was anything but a sniper. The forward could only muster 4 goals his first campaign, preferring to pass the puck rather than taking the shot. This has by far been the biggest improvement this season. Not only has Knutsen already passed 4 goals in his first 31 games, but it hasn't been close. Knutsen has managed to pot 14 goals this season and has solidified himself as the biggest threat on his team.

Stat Two: 44.09% vs. 52.06%
In fairness to Knutsen Jr., it's hard to be a dominate centre right from the get-go. The older competition is stronger and more experienced on the dot. Knutsen Jr struggled his first season, only managing to win 44.09% of his 279 draws. This season has been much different for him though. Trusted as the Falcons number one centre, he's obviously learned from his poor season and turned things around this season. Knutsen Jr. has managed to win 52.06% of his 194 draws in his second season. Assuming the Falcons get him for a third season, the sky is the limit.

Stat Three: 21 vs. 33
We've already talked about Knutsen Jr.'s much improved goal total, but his point total deserves to be highlighted also. In his rookie season, the player was a good depth option for the Falcons, managing a total of 21 points in 50 games. But as the spotlight shone on him his senddown season, Knutsen has delivered. Knutsen Jr has managed 33 points in 31 games this season. With the Falcons being not a great team this season, a performance like this may demand MVP consideration.

We are now 3/5ths of the way done this season and many players in the SMJHL are finding themselves with more production in 30 games this season than they had all last season in their rookie years. The SMJHL is a league full of development and fast growth, and you need to keep up with the fast paced level of improvement to compete in this league. One of the players who has kept paced extremely well in his training and improvement over the last season is Esa Parmborg of the Halifax Raiders raiders

Through last season's 50 games, in Esa's rookie year he provided 15 points for the Raiders with 6 goals and 9 assists from the third line wing. That is incredible numbers already for a rookie on limited ice time but is even more impressive when you realize he already has 18 points this season in 19 less games played! That's right Esa has blown past his already impressive rookie numbers in less games played this season with 7 goals and 11 assists, this time coming from the second line center with slightly more time on ice. Parmborg is not just a pretty goal scorer either, he is good on all areas of the ice so let's take a look at the rest of his stats between the two seasons to really appreciate his growth as a player. In season 46 Esa accumulated 44 hits, 4 shots blocked, 20 PIMs and had a +/- of -8. So far in season 47 (31 GP), Parmborg boasts 27 hits, 3 shots blocked, 10 PIMs and a +/- of -5. So between the two seasons, Esa Parmborg has 3 more points, a better +/-, similar shots blocked and is on pace to acquire the same amount of hits but with tons of the season left to play. Well done Esa, keep up the great improvement!  raiders

THEO MORGAN

One year is a lot of time in life, and one season is a long time in the SHL. Players grow exponentially and it is awesome to check up and see the difference that one season can make. As an undrafted free agent, Theo Morgan decided to bring his talents to the west coast of Canada and join the Vancouver Whalers. The Whalers had been rebuilding for a while so it was understood by Theos part, the chance at success on the team scale was not very high. But, in the future, that could change.

In under than 70% of the season, Theo Morgan has already tripled his point totals from last season. In fact, it took him only 17 games this season for Theo to tie the same amount of points he had last season. Averaging only a minute more per game compared to last season, Theo Morgan has changed up his style of play, electing to shoot the puck a little more than last season. With only 66 Shots in total for a whole season last year, Theo knew that he was going to have a bigger role if he would want to see the Whalers succeed. So far, he has potted the puck in the net 11 times, but has already taken 86 shots in the season. That shoot first mentality has helped increase the scoring totals for the Whalers organization.
Knowing that there was a little more on the line this year, with the Whalers coming in with a lot higher expectations, Morgan decided to play playoff hockey throughout the whole season. Morgan has already registered 26 hits, throwing his body around more than last season, where he totaled just 22 hits.

It will be fun to see how the season ends for the Whalers and Theo, who has already had a career year for himself. With his play hopefully continuing like he already has, Theo has his eyes set on the rest of the regular season and most importantly, the post season.

The development of star Armada player Xena has been incredible. Hailing from the United Kingdom originally, Xena, a 6th overall pick for the S43 season, came overseas and started her SMJHL career quite well, putting up 10 goals and 13 assists in 50 games. Those 23 points put her 4th in rookie scoring, and established her as a potential key piece for the Armada moving forward.

Fast-forward to today, and Xena became everything the Armada could have expected, and more. She has taken her game to another level this season, as she has 20 goals and 39 points in just 36 games, making her the leading scorer across the entire league. Her and Anchorage captain Olivier Cloutier have been a lethal one-two punch for the Boats, as Cloutier is just a point behind Xena for top in points. The 77 points that her and the captain have combined represent nearly twenty-nine percent of the total points scored by the Armada roster, proving just how ridiculously valuable both of them have been to Anchorage. Xena's incredible season has made history, too. Her output this season has solidified her as the all-time top point scorer for the Armada, passing legendary winger Dani Forsberg to take the crown. Big congratulations to Xena for claiming the record, and making her mark in Anchorage's history in what will be her last season for the Armada!

Martijn Westbroek

With the 19th pick in the S47 SHL draft, the Chicago Syndicate picked up their second Anaheim Outlaw in as many picks. Martijn Westbroek fell to them early in the second round and Chicago were quick to run to the podium and call his name. Let’s compare Westbroek’s SMJHL production from his rookie campaign to his sophomore.

As a rookie, Westbroek found his home on Anaheim’s third line where he had a nice season. Tallying five goals and sixteen assists would make any first year player proud. His twenty one point total was good enough to put him sixth in the league for most points by a rookie. A few key areas Chicago wanted to see him work down in the juniors were his defending and his shooting. Only thirty games into his second season, his hard work in these areas are very noticeable. He’s already more than doubled his goal total, but more importantly, he’s almost doubled his shooting percentage. Making the most of the few high danger chances you get during a game is crucial and the extra shooting drills Westbroek has worked into his training has paid off tremendously. His defense has also gotten better which is a vital attribute for a center. On an Anaheim team that placed third in the standings in S46, Westbroek didn’t boast a great plus minus sitting at -4. In S47, on a vastly inferior roster where the Outlaws currently sit in 7th, he is tied for the best plus minus on the team with a +4. This shows that Westbroek has clearly been working hard on defensive positioning and awareness and it’s helping his line keep the puck out of their own net. His improvement will continue as the season wears on and surely Chicago is thrilled with their second round pick’s progress.

With the 3rd Overall pick in the Season 45 SMJHL entry draft, The Anchorage Armada traded up to select an extremely talented right winger, Olivier Cloutier. It was seen as a bold gamble at the time for the organisation as while Olivier was exceptionally talented, there were questions regarding how he would fit in to the Armada system and if he could translate his junior dominance to the SMJHL. His rookie season showed great promise for the future with a solid return all around. Getting 13 points (6 goals and 7 Assists) while anchoring the third of Anchorage was a solid start for the winger would go on to be drafted 3rd Overall by the Tampa Bay Barracuda of the SHL.

What Tampa Bay wanted to see from Olivier was a big increase in his scoring because they believed the more Olivier shot the puck, more often than not it would go in due to his incredible precision and puck handling. Midway through his 3rd season with the Armada, Olivier has proven Tampa Bay correct in their assessment of him. Olivier is now Top 5 in points in the SMJHL and now plays consistent first line time for the Armada. If it wasn’t for Xena, Olivier would be the team leader in goals, assists and points. Both the Armada and Barracuda should be very proud with their choice because Olivier has proven himself to be one of the most versatile right wingers in the league.

EVO:
Good ole Ja'ag, he who at one mement will nick your puck like he nicks ya wallet, and in another moment will down 5 Irish Car Bombs, maybe with a couple of Jaegerbombs to go with it. Preferably not in Sweeden tho, I hear he has a warrant there.

Anyway, what was it that you wanted from me? Comparing Ja'ag now to his rookie year? Alright then.

Ja'ag has always taken pride as a faceoff master, even in rookie puck; 51.38% Faceoff win percentage in his rookie year is an amazing performance and, if maintained, will help raise Ja'ag's stock. Ja'ag didn't like the word maintain, cause after 38 games so far, he has a team-leading faceoff win percentage of 55.66%. I know who to place my bet on when Ja'ag is in the circle.

Of course, it's all good winning faceoffs, but you also have to shoot to bring pressure to the goalie, and as a defensive forward, that has come hard for Ja'ag to begin with, only shooting a total of 28 times over 50 games. Very sure that Nick and O'Koivu laughed the hell out of him for that. At least this season he has made up for that shortcomming, shooting 55 times. Now goalies can't just leave Ja'ag as a likely dud, lest they want to let one pass by them.

And with that, we get to the points, how we earn our bread. Sure, defense can save ya, but scoring wins ya games. And Ja'ag was certainly not scoring early on, only recording 4 points (1 G, 3 A) on a shooting percentage of 3.57%....................yeah, Ja'ag doesn't like talking about that. What he does like talkin about is his improvements. This season, he has score 12 points so far (5 G, 7 A) on a 9.09% shooting percentage. Now that is good production from our defender up front.

Although I covered his offensive progress, I should mention that Ja'ag still is a nightmare to face defensively with his 37 hits and his 104 min PK time. But I don't need to worry about that, cause he is still my wacky, fun teammate.

JCW:
That's calm and all, but on the off-chance that Tronna doesn't draft ya, you will be locked on a island with me. Hope you like some Everclear with that.

EVO:
XD Ja'ag................please just no. I'm not going into a drinking contest with you, damnit.
