A thrilling battle of the goaltenders ended with a late goal as the Colorado Raptors steal a win from the Anchorage Armada. Both Ian Venables and Emiko Spektor shined in a battle between first and second place.
FIRST PERIOD
Nothing much happened until 4:56 into the period when Raptors center Bo Kane was penalized on a double minor for slashing. Yet the Armada could do nothing on the power play. Stavros Halkias came close to a goal, deflecting a Gabe Johnson shot onto the Raptors net with 12 seconds left on the power play, but Emiko Spektor made a great save to deny him. Halkias seemed to be steaming after that miss, and would absolutely light up Ja’aj Coitus-Wagg late in the period. 17 Armada shots in the period. All either saved by Spektor or missed the net entirely. Meanwhile, the Raptors only had 3 shots, barely testing Ian Venables, who looked strong in between the pipes for the Armada. Colorado had been bailed out by their goalie, and that’s a trend that would continue throughout the game.
SECOND PERIOD
Colorado started the period off on the right foot, with a Henrik Lekberg Osterman shot saved by Venables two minutes in. Venables coughed up a rebound only for Vorian Atreides to miss the net. Anchorage went back to dominating play, with three straight Daniel Bischoff shots missing the net, until a hit from Georgy Gorbachenko seemed to turn the tide. That positive play seemed to be curtailed when Anthony Archer was sent to the box with 10:44 left in the period, but the Raptors did a fantastic job of killing it off, and right after it ended, First-Name Last-Name received a pass from Derek Bohne Jr., skated up the ice, and beat Ian Venables to give the Raptors a 1-0 lead. The teams continued to trade shots until the period ended. Colorado outshot Anchorage 9 to 6, and scored the lone goal of the period.
THIRD PERIOD
Anchorage were on a mission to get one back in the third period, and pelted Emiko Spektor with a continuous barrage of shots early in the period. But Daniel Bischoff, Augustus Wang, Spencer MacLean, Stavros Halkias, and Jake Primeau were all turned away or missed the net entirely. Seven minutes in, Joe Kerr, Berry Blue, and MacLean all fired on target, only to see Spektor make a string of fantastic saves. The game continued to be an exciting, back-and-forth affair until the final whistle, as Jake Primeau was denied by Spektor with 12 seconds left. Anchorage outshot Colorado again, 11 to 8, but had no goal to show for it as a lack of finishing cost the Armada dearly. The final score from Alaska was Armada 0, Raptors 1.
THREE STARS
1. Emiko Spektor
2. Derek Bohne Jr.
3. First-Name Last-Name
KEY PLAYER
Emiko Spektor won the first star, and it was well deserved, as she kept the Raptors both in the game and in the lead with some fantastic saves. Without her between the pipes, Anchorage would’ve had a field day, as they produced 34 shots in the game compared to Colorado’s 20. The Raptors should be thanking their lucky stars that Spektor played so well.
