If I were in charge of the SHL Discord, I would straight up delete it. It's extremely bloated to the point where every single conversation piece would have it's own channel. Link that with the fact the person who runs that discord is essentially inactive and I'm assuming isn't too willing to give up the privileges to the channel. I guess if we had to keep it I would make a channel to salute me, and anyone who didn't do that would get instantaneously banned from the SHL.

Also, I would bring back Gorlab but that's another story for neither here nor there.

A second also - pingy bot would be the admin and would also be on discipline committee on the site. I think some other users have brought that up and I think that pingy bot would be a very valuable acquisition as SHL discord commissioner.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Quote:Written Task: Today the SHL has gone all in by naming you the leagues first ever SHL Discord commissioner! with unlimited power over the whole league channel what would you do?? What ideas or changes would you consider? would you add any channels, bots or other discord friendly additions? would you make or modify any rules? what would some of your strategic plans be between discord and the SHL/SMJHL under your reign?... the floor is yours, feel free to dance! (must be 150 words or more)

My first course of action would of course be to eliminate the activity from the forum sucking parasite that is discord. I kid, discord is a great program and great for all kinds of chats. Well if I was to become the first ever commissioner of discord I think I would start of by adding ways to make the SHL a lot easier. There would be channels for all the important league announcements, channels for the newest point tasks and job openings and what have you not. These would be kept clean and if something became irrelevent the post would be deleted to not fill up any precious space.

I would also add a channel that is meant for anime and anime only. It would be the ultimate spot to talk about the latest animes, debates members on why their waifus is absolute trash dog shit and why yours is supere to theirs, reminise about the good old days when anime was actually good and not all just isekais and shit and ofcourse a place where members can come and shame all the weebs that visit the anime channel.
I would create a bot that would ask you for your team before allowing access to the rest of the channels. Once you have told it your team, it would automatically assign you a role, a colour and a subscription to the appropriate channel you belong in. All of the channels would be named after their teams, except Buffalo's which would just say -null-. Upon questioning why the channel is called that, a second bot would automatically mute that person for 10 minutes and delete their question. None of this has any purpose except to troll the players.

Continuing on with my tyrannical shenanigans, I would have the Steelhawks and the Platoon members be the exact same colour. They want to share a mascot, they can share a colour too. I would make a command executed by ?SKREE that would delete every other message sent in the last 10 minutes and post a gif of a giant red bird screeching. Whoever sent the command would also be automatically booted from the server with a 5 day IP ban, not even being able to see their handiwork in all its glory.

I shouldn't be the SHL Discord commissioner.

The Shl discords are a great place for teammates to get to know each other and also receive help from the older members with their players. If I had the power over the discords I would change the Main SHL discord. I would have it where an older member was assigned a rookie and would help them out solely on anything they needed to do to gain tpe. This way the rookie doesn't have to try to find someone to help them and also have to tell a new person all their information to get started. Having the same person helping you the whole time would make things easier because they know what is trying to make and also know about your stats already. There should also be a dedicated discord for all the international play that happens in the SHL. The WJC and IIHF games are becoming more and more popular and should have a discord for that. This way the teams can trash talk each other and not spam the main SHL chat and there could be updates posted for the international games in there.
My first action as discord commissioner would be to ban anyone who questions my new found authority. I would make a channel just for talking about the Canucks as well. Pingy Bot would be active in every channel, and pingy would be given control over him. We would of course have Vancouver's food porn channel moved over to general as well. I would add a rule that McZ can only post once a day maximum. We would also introduce a game of thrones channel. I'd also make a channel called Survivor and one member would be voted off the channel per day. The winner would win $1000 USD wired to his real life bank account, everyone would pay to play and that funds the prize. My strategic plans would be to use discord like a chat forum, which is what it is used for currently and it's very fun. We would also eliminate any team that beats Vancouver in the playoffs from the discord.
As the first SHL Discord Commissioner, I would first implement the idea of a Caption Contest channel. It would serve as an experiment for the next idea of potentially using the Discord server for certain Weekend Funtime tasks. If that doesn't turn out favorably, it could still be there for the heck of it or converted to a general memes channel. Second, if not already done, add a memes channel. Third, add emojis such as the Challenge Cup and MVP trophy emojis and allow users who have won such awards to bear them.

Fourth, add a trivia bot channel. It's good fun on occasion in the Manhattan Rage LR and it stirs up some fierce and fast competition. Also, explore trivia bots that have a bit of a wider rotation of subjects and questions. Finally, for those who really want a down, dirty and fast showdown, I would give a Thunderdome channel a one-week trial and see just how much I come to regret that decision before pulling the plug.

Ultimately, while I would love integration between the forums and the Discord server, we need to bear in mind the SFL is a forum-based sim league first. I wouldn't try to tie too much down to the Discord since it's harder to keep records there and would be harder to keep pace if we staked more on presence in there.
As the first ever SHL Discord commissioner, I would first cry myself to sleep every night over applying for that position, but then I would be hard at work during the day to help the server. First, I would organize the current channels in the SHL server as such and add in a couple (* are new):

Official
>#rules
>#announcements*

SHL
>#general
>#shl
>smjhl
>#iihf
>#draft
>#media*

Non-SHL
>#nhl
>#gaming
>#music
>#pets
>#food
>#emojis
>#bot-playground*

Voicechats
>General
>Gaming
>Draft Discussion

First, I would hire 3-4 moderators along with me and have at least one person in a GMT+0 or +1 timezone. I would actually put rules in the rules channel, and those rules would follow the site's rules under Personal Attacks/Forum Related Discipline in the SHL Rulebook. Announcements would be for any changes to the rules/other channels or whatever else the moderation team deemed necessary.

I would like the server to help drive people to the site instead of keep them away (Discord is where league activity is going to stay, my friends, am sorry to say, but we can still keep people interested in the site who would rather be on Discord), so by creating the #media channel, it could be the place where you post your article links. It would probably also help people get more comments/up reps. As Discord commish, I would also obviously also listen to the needs of non-Discord fans to drum up more forum activity.

I would probably try out a couple bots and if those fall away, have new ones come in, etc. Maybe hire some game/movie night enthusiasts to be like party planners and organize those fun nights on a rotating schedule for folks. I already made a server for that, but I'd delete that and then just make a channel for the draft parties where we maybe do some fun ice breakers or games with all the new rookies. Or maybe just tear it all down, idk, I have the server muted basically. But if I was in charge, ig I'd have to care.
I’m onto you HO, you’re not going to be poaching all my awesome Discord ideas. Instead I will post only my worst ideas.

Idea 1! – Festivus Friday – Every Friday randomly chosen members of the discord will allowed to participate in the time honoured traditions of Festivus. This will mostly consist of the “Airing of Grievances” and “Feats of Strength”. A Festivus for the rest of us!!

Idea 2! – Make Pingy a Mod – No further explanation required.

Idea 3! – Make Expiring invites – Make all Invite links set to expire, then only post the new link minutes before the new last one is set to expire. This will make people swarm the website at specific times to try and get the invite thereby driving up traffic to the site.

Idea 4! – Remove Festivus Friday – After a while everyone will come to love Festivus Friday because this turned into a better idea the more I thought about it. Remove it! And return everything to a state of civil discourse.
You know what would easily be the worst punishment for me? You know how you'd get me to leave forever? Appointing me Discord Commissioner.

Because of my unrivaled passion for literally anything I'm assigned to do--in a borderline-personality-disorder, manic-depressive sort of way--I would have to oblige and actually administrate the Discord. It's in quite a state, and to be honest, the general SHL Discord has absolutely zero redeeming quality. There are memes and spam like any Discord, sure, but there isn't even any detailed conversation apart from a few people. Most people stick to their team Discords [or LR's, as I assume those are still in use for some teams].

But how do you improve communication between two media when most of the "action" of a text-based game occurs on one, and strictly commentary [if even that, because it's usually just drivel] appears on the other? The answer is, in short, you fucking don't. The longer answer is that we'd try to move some of that "action" onto the Discord through live events, PbP commentary, and activities while taking it away from the forum (as though that's a great idea). We would try to further incorporate the cultures that teams try to cultivate in their respective LR discords to improve the first couple of lines a new user sees (which as it stands now is Pingy having an intellectual stroke).

If the Draft Class Discord was the first one people saw, we might be better off. I know that forums are old school to most, but the value that one can gather from piecing out their thoughts on a forum is incomparable to running into a roadblock of shitposting from someone else looking at what you're typing as you're thinking it. We need to consider the rhetorical value of Discord's chat log versus the forum's history. I'll never win this fight, and I've obliged to joining team DIscords because it's convenient if everyone plays. At the same time, posting a line or two isn't activity. Until we fully integrate, both media have diminished returns.
