As SHL Discord Commissioner, I would make it more enticing to use the general discord as it is currently a gong show of channels and it is just easier to use the individual team discords if I need help with something SHL-related. I would separate the chat channels into SHL related and non-SHL related. Some users may only use discord to ask for help and this will allow them to sort out the main discord easier. Have all members sorted into their teams to allow users to recognize each other easier. Consider removing draft class discord server and consolidating it into the main SHL discord would prevent users for having too many separate SHL-related discord servers. If privacy can be maintained, consider having each team have its own exclusive channel/locker room on the main SHL discord. This will help alleviate the too many different SHL-related discord servers problem and help consolidate all members to interact in one discord.
As a relatively new user I think discord works good as a locker room. I think the music bot was a good idea as long as it is not abused to share music amongst teammates. I am not certain but maybe there should be a few jobs for the Discord. Examples would include an SHL and SMJHL Discord manager. Their duties would be to streamline each locker room to make them all similar in structure and take onus off of our GM’s to keep Discord locker rooms in check.

For example, each teams Discord channel would have 3 sub-channels; General channel for Alumni, GM’s, and Current players, SHL/SMJHL HO, for any subject. Locker room channel for current players and GM to discuss the season and other interests. A centralized TPE, Build, Strategy channel, for specific question pertaining to Coaching for current players. A lot of users love trash talking too, so I think there should be a SMJHL and SHL trash talk channel and have sub channels for each season. Make a new award for best trash talker from there. Lastly, maybe add Nationality Locker rooms. When selected to a team you get in the locker room. I’m just brainstorming here. Other jobs could include a Discord HR Rep. All they would do is make sure each user who has a discord account is in their correct locker rooms. While also classifying players as Alumni, Roster, GM, Retired, etc.
So, I’m not even aware of what rules the current SHL Discord server has aside from the basic stuff like “don’t be a cunt”. So, I don’t think I’d make any changes there. Aside from that, the engagement over there isn’t what I’d call “poppin”, y’know, so making any changes to the actual format of the discord seems unnecessary. I suppose holding some kind of discord referendum or opening a suggestion box would be the best way to identify changes that need to be made. Active moderation doesn’t seem to be a concern, so I don’t think I’d need to install a staff, or at least, not a very big one. Maybe a couple mods just to make sure no one’s a dick when I can’t be there. I think there’s things we can do to increase league discord engagement like a big game night or something, to increase voice chatting once a week or something. I remember Storm tried to set up a little Overwatch discord and we played a couple games one night, so something like and SHL Overwatch pick up game/tournament, or a Jackbox nigh, or a Secret HItler night, or something like that. Of course you’d need a site incentive like some TPE or SHL bux or something to get people to participate could also be discussed. Aside from that, there’s not much I can think of that needs to be done.
OK so I will preface this by mentioning I am not on SHL Discord so I have no idea if any of this is already in place

So first thing is to make sure that when somebody signs up, they get an invite to the discord channel - whether it be in the auto-welcome message or a manual invite

I would not allow any bots at all. They are distracting and mostly annoying.

I would hire people to have as close to a 24-hour presence on the discord as possible, and have one channel exclusive for rookies, with mentors available to answer their questions.

People who spam the discord with idiocy would be politely asked to stop but then kicked if they persisted.

Definitely have a channel with links to all point tasks or other TPE opportunities

Would have a channel for random chat which is not exclusively SHL-related so people could chat about whatever, so that the discussion about SHL stuff remains SHL-related.

NO NSFW stuff.

Obviously monitor the chat daily and if any good suggestions are made on discord that they get passed along into SHL Discussion on the forums.

Generally promote a respectful, helpful, and inclusive attitude, and make it something that works WITh the forums rather than try to replace them. The league is still a forum-based thing so wouldn't want to lose that aspect of it.

ALSO - not sure how to do this exactly but have some sort of scrolling scoring update that shows the results of the sims, kind of like they do on ESPN or TSN, with news and whatnot.
Quote:Today the SHL has gone all in by naming you the leagues first ever SHL Discord commissioner! with unlimited power over the whole league channel what would you do??  What ideas or changes would you consider? would you add any channels, bots or other discord friendly additions? would you make or modify any rules? what would some of your strategic plans be between discord and the SHL/SMJHL under your reign?... the floor is yours, feel free to dance!

First of all, I would make it so that only moderators can post in #rules. Second, I would appoint more moderators to the discord -- for a start, everyone in HO would be a mod, and I would also open a few jobs for SHL Discord Mod with a moderate amount of pay. These moderators are in charge of kicking spammers, warning/banning people for inconsiderate/hateful conduct, assigning team roles to people, and helping out in general. I think the main problem with the SHL discord is that nothing of importance ever happens there. For example, there should be an #announcements channel where people with the appropriate tags are pinged whenever there's a new SHL PT, or SMJHL PT, or awards, or whatever else. I would also kick the MEE6BOT, and make it so that the Pokemon bot can only post messages in the #pokemon channel.

Overall, I think it's hard to make the SHL discord all that more relevant, simply because it's huge and it's always going to feel like less of a community when compared the smaller discords of SHL and SMJHL teams and draft classes. However, that doesn't mean we can't do things to improve the SHL discord and at least make it somewhat useful to be a part of.
I will have to say I am not a part of the SHL Discord because I was warned beforehand about it. That is probably a pretty big thing to build on, I assume the moderation is pretty mild, so getting some mods from the players, even giving them few SHL bucks, would probably create a bit nicer of an environment. Another way to approach this would be creating a sort of serious discussion channel, where people wouldn't be allowed to post memes, and moderating would be a bit harsher to ensure people don't go on pointless rants about nothing, but actually discuss, although I feel the idea would get abbandoned pretty quickly. At least I would want to try, maybe people can stay civilized while talking to each other. On the other hand tho, where is order, has to be chaos, so having a fully dedicated channel to Pingy-level spam would also have to be a thing to think about. A place for most people to just mute, and for the chosen few that can withstand it, to just mindlessly type out whatever they want, with the moderation staying only within the most basic of boundaries.
The first thing I’d do as discord commissioner, is ban pingy. Dude is fucking annoying as hell and just ruins things. But jokes aside, I’d do what I could to make discord great again. At some point, it became a thing where if you offended someone on discord they could screen shot it and cry to HO about their feelings being hurt. Then people are getting suspended for some bullshit that they thought they’d be saying in a safe space. I’d eliminate that right away. Honestly, if there was a way to eliminate screen shotting discords, I’d enable that so that way people couldn’t just rat each other out and be backstabbing little babies about it. The next thing I’d do is hire @luketd and name him Bot Commissioner. He knows what the people like, and I think he’d be great at knowing which bots to create, destroy, add, whatever. Also nobody can ever @everyone ever again. Thanks. (157)
I actually am basically a discord commissioner, because I have mod powers in the SHL discord, but never once have I felt the need to do anything in that place except play duck hunt. With that in mind, the change I would make to the SHL discord is that I would get rid of all the channels EXCEPT for dunk hunt, and then i would relentlessly hunt ducks until I was top of the leaderboard, which I may or may not be right now, I don't know, I'd check but I don't want to get sucked back in because I don't have time right now. so basically my strategic plan is to throw out simon t hockey simulator and just make the shl (simulation hockey league) discord into dhl (duck hunt league) discord. this is a perfect plan, and as an shl discord administrator, i am going to implement it as soon as i post this pt. unless i forget and/or don't care. thank u, goodbye.
I guess I can see how discord is useful but I have never enjoyed it since joining the league. I would much rather see the locker rooms become more important on the site. When I first joined I thought it was a super cool idea but quickly realized it was almost never used. It doesn't make much sense to me that we all spend time on the site but then have to go to another site in order to communicate with our teammates or found out what is happening in the league. Maybe in the beginning it was better but all the different sub-channels that each channel has makes it a nightmare to go through.

If I had to make discord an official partner of the site channels would have to be cleaned up. I don't want to be a killjoy or anything but I don't care about the food everyone is eating and stuff like that. Any spammy bots would not be allowed. I would make a rule that all usernames must be the same as on the site or at least have the player name included. It is so hard to know who anyone is when usernames can be changed at any time.

I think discord is great for people who have time to be on there but for people who don't have that much time it is frustrating to try and find info or see what people have been talking about since you logged on last week. MAKE LOCKERROOMS GREAT AGAIN
As the new SHL Discord Commissioner, I would rule it with an iron fist. There would be zero tolerance for nonsense. I would let the people voice their opions on ideas for discord channels on how they could be streamlined and improved and with my ultimate authority I would be decree my favorite suggests to be done.

I would make my no nonsense police directly into the rules so everyone would be forewarned that the SHL Discord commissioner aka me, will not tolerate anyone's nonsense and punishment for nonsense will be swift and severe.

As for my strategic plans between the SHL/SMJHL, I would have none as I cannot think of any off the top of my head. So I suppose my plan would be to pit individual players from the SHL and the SMJHL against each other in a rap showdown. Then I will decree the winner based on my personal amusement and reward the winner with TPE. And that is how I would rule as SHL Discord Commissioner. Ha Ha Ha

First thing I would do as the new commissioner of the Discord is delete every single discord. The SHL one and every single team too. Then I would ban every single user from Discord. Then I would open up an MSN account and add everybody to my MSN account so we could talk through MSN messenger. People can use just as many smiley faces as they do now. It's basically the same. There would be different groups for every team that I would oversee but nobody else could see it. Then there would be one huge group with all the people in it. Memes would be banned! No more pings! I guess that we all could have our own unique usernames which is pretty exciting and should be fun and there won't be a limit of the kind of stuff that we could talk about. Oh just kidding actually there will be a list of appropriate things which we can talk about.
As someone who is relatively new to the site, Discord, from my experience, is a great communication tool. especially for locker rooms with both voice and text chat. However, it's no secret that the SHL discord isn't exactly active all the time. Some things I would do:

1. Announcement Channel. The fact that the SHL Discord doesn't have one is kinda insane. New PT's, Job Announcements, site announcements, you name it. The draft class discords have them, why not the central server?

2. Reducing the number of channels. Many others have touched on this point before, but it's a great point nonetheless: we don't need a smash bros channel if we have a gaming channel; who uses #food? ; make things like IIHF and the Draft as seasonal threads. The possibilities go on.

3. Flash Events: I don't know if it would fare well, but how about having flash assignments every now and then for some cash? It doesn't need to be a lot, but giving people a reason to check in every now and then would be a great thing for boosting activity...in theory.
As the Discord Commissioner, I would aim to make discord a community spot but not an SHL necessity.

I've seen it posted already, so I won't vamp on it, but first step is an announcements channel with links to the forum announcements.  I wouldn't worry about facilitating announcements discussion on discord, since that will be done on a per issue basis on the forum.

I like having the SMJHL / SHL / IIHF based channels, but I would appoint moderators to encourage some friendly inter-team trash talk.  They would post the schedules for the next day, calling out some players to look for.  I think teams can become kind of silo'd unless you are someone who is notorious or a fantasy asset, so I want people to have exposure to others in the league beyond their own team.  I'm not talking about tummy sticks here, just some banter about upcoming games.

I would not try to usurp the team specific servers because I think that is an important part of the team experience.  Each team has its own memes and interests channels, that is encouraged.  There is still some place for league wide interest threads, however, for example people interested in software development projects for the league will be sparsely spread across all teams.  My goal here would be encourage active sub communities separate from the sim for people to hang out.

If someone recognizes that enough people are interested in a certain hobby or topic, they can ask for a channel to be made and become the moderator.  By having someone responsible for taking care of the channel, dead channels will naturally get cleaned out as interest dies.  I'm not 100% on what moderator duties would be, but they could facilitate involvement with regular events, or be the point person for rules or ideas for the channel.  If we interact with each other as people more, we might not be as quick to jump down each other's throats about little things.
As Discord Commissioner there are only a few small changes I might place into effect:

Idea Channel: I've always thought this might be a good addition; somewhere members can post ideas on how to improve the league (or in this case, Discord) and get a direct answer from management / leadership without it being flooded with nonsense.

Ban all Bots: Speaking for everyone, the damn bots are annoying. They should be kept away from Discord entirely, in my opinion, and this would be my first step towards doing so.

Flash PT's: So I think this would have a lot of challenges to it but could be very successful. For those in the Discord channel, the PT Director could post something under a PT Channel like "Answer this trivia question within 12 hours to receive an extra uncapped TPE".... kind of like a pop quiz. This might be an incentive for those who AREN'T on Discord, to join it.

If I became discord commissioner, my first and only change would be to make a room solely for Pingy to be himself in. His way of talking seems to of contaminated other fellow SHL'ers and it must be contained. I feel like it would be years before he even realized he was by himself. It's simple, he likes talking and basically he's the only one that can understand himself. Maybe once in awhile if he starts getting suspicious we can throw McZ in there for laughs, everyone would have access to this room, but no one could talk so that way we could all witness the anarchy that would ensue of those 2 trying to speak to each other. This would all be in an attempt to change Pingy to a normal functioning member of society instead of the nothing penguin he is right now. Oh and also I'd ban Monkey D. Luffy from all rooms just cause it would be funny.
