I refuse to flat out pick who I think will win the Sarmad Khan Trophy out of fear and superstition, but I will enjoy presenting alternatives to the alleged favourite. The easiest option is Justin Time. Dude was positively unhinged this season: he ended the year sitting at #1 in wins, goals against average, goals saved above average (almost double 2nd place Evil Kyle Murray, who had a hell of a year himself), save percentage, and tied for first in shutouts with Seattle's Henri Losanov. It's absurd. If ever a goalie could win MVP (and they should be in the mix much more often because goalies are cute and awesome), I can't think of anyone with a better case for it than Time. As for an alternative on the blue line? The MVP award strongly favours offense, so I will to because I'm lazy right now. I think I'd go with Kal Akar Kekkonen. While he was NOT the leading scorer among defensemen, at #3 he was only four points away from tying teammate Stavros Kondos, and more importantly (to me), he is the only one in the top 10 who was also in the top 10 for hits.

Option 1:

There would not be a single rule change on the ice if Paul Bondage had his way. The game would still play out as it always does, we do not need to change any rules to this wonderful, beautiful game. HOWEVER, I do agree, it can get pretty boring to see the same team win the cup multiple years in a row (unless you are a fan of the team, then it is fun as hell). But no, what Paul Bondage would do is that the IF the reigning champions make it back to the finals, they will have one loose gorilla in their locker room. They can choose to ignore the gorilla, but that may not be up to them. How is the gorilla feeling today? Sleepy, bored, angry? Did he enjoy all the ruckus happening through the walls of the arena or did it just make him irate? Have fun!

I think the best option to make for a more unpredictable playoffs is to change the way that teams advance to the next round. Each round you can have a weighted total of wins needed to advance that favors the underdog team. For example: if the matchup is between a 1 seed and 8 seed, the 1 seed needs to have 4 more wins than the 8 seed to advance. So a 4-0 series would be the same as it is right now, but if the 8 seed gets 2 wins then the 1 seed can't advance just by winning 4 in a row in 6 games. They would have to get to 6 wins to win the series by 4 games. Obviously it would lead to longer playoff series, but there would probably be some pretty interesting outcomes (and a lot of mad players from the top teams). I don't think it would make for great playoffs, but it'd be entertaining for sure.

There are a number of players that have had outstandings years. I think Fantasy Hockey Manager really pushes for success being seen in the way of scoring. I think it’s also the easy answer for people to vote for the player that has the most points. I think there is a Goalie that should get recognition though. The San Francisco Pride goalie, Justin Time. Yes, he is on an amazing team, but he also puts up amazing stats. Forty wins in 54 games is unreal. Winning 75% of the games he plays in. It’s not the most wins he’s gotten in his career but he has had a career year for other stats. S81 was his best save % year, second best GAA and fourth most shutouts. He also had the second most saves of his career. A career year doesn’t mean he deserves MVP though. Let’s look at how he compares to his peers. First in wins with 7 more than second. First in GAA, first in GSAA, first in save %, first in shutouts and fifth in shutouts. This guy is next level and deserves to be called MVP.

If my player was selected to mix things up, he would do his best but I don't think he'd have the best solution. Louis Belanger doesn't see any big issues with the rules currently for the playoffs and he thinks that most teams need to simply be better. We can congratulate the winners, San Francisco, and we don't need to try to change everything simply because they won everything, In real life, we've seen teams in multiple sports be good for a long time and win cups many times in a few short span so this is not a SHL problem. If you were to put rules that would make it almost impossible to win 3 cups in a row, that would be really bad for the league I believe because you would have to remove incentives to build a good team. Therefore, I hope the league stays with the current rules for now.

I'd go nuts on rule changes for the playoffs. To the point it's barely hockey anymore. I'd have goals count as 2 if shot originated from higher than the faceoff circles. Just a flurry of one timers from the point. Selfishly this will benefit Newfoundland as their D have put up a crazy 71 goals combined. Shot blocks would become even more valuable but that's also why Id change the rule for intentionally blocking a shot from the point would result in a foul shot of sorts where the team gets to take a free shot from the slot.

The game would be so far from actual hockey and likely result in 20-18 type games but I bet there would be a ton of parity as it essentially becomes luck and who has the best shooters. Would I actually want to see this? Nope. But hey that's what hypotheticals are for.

Option #2: Well I was going to do an affiliate but then I saw this second prompt and figured I would give it a try.  But first I think a look at why Logan Webb is the top scoring player this year so a comparison can be made.

First let's look he is the top TPE player on SF and so should be on that top line going against the other top players, but nope not there.  Oh must be on the second, nope not there. He is the RW on the third line.  Now SF does have a lot of good high TPE players, but placing what is your 1st line into the 3rd line slot so they can go mostly up against those new 1000 TPE rookies, well of course they dominate.

How about Ubba Lodbrockleading assist man for Philadelphia.  Yep he is up there on the first line for them playing against the best of the best.

Or Shadow Fenix from Seattle who finished second in points, yeah he too is up against other fellow top TPE players on the first line.

Or if you want totalk defensemen, howabout Kal Akar Kekkonen who let all players in Power Play goals. A feat not often done and still played solid defense for the team that finished 5th overall in points.

So, in conclusion, if you want to give it to the player who scored the most goals and points, well then the MVP is the Coach GM of the SF Pride who had enough high players to put their best forward up against 3rd line competition like my player is is not quite at 1000 TPE this point.

That's your look behind the points

RE: S81 PT #5: Let’s Mix It Up - TomServo - 03-21-2025

As a player on the Kelowna Knights, they picked me to change the rules this year. I wanted to make things unpredictable while giving our team a slight edge.
I have created a rule where scoring twice consecutively means playing with your stick upside-down for five minutes. This disrupts dominant teams who rely on scoring streaks, but can allow for some crazy shots with the nub of a stick.
I also added a "home ice advantage" where once each period, we add one GIANT shield to the middle of the slot that we call "Defending the Fortress". This works perfectly with our fast paced passing style and allows for some crazy blind spot shots.
My main change is position rotation after whistles. Forwards become defensemen, defensemen become goalies. This completely transforms game strategy. We call this rule, "Knights of the Rotating Table".
The playoffs are now completely different. Still recognizable as hockey, but strategy has to constantly adapt. Three-peats seem impossible with these changes. Our team is performing better than expected with these new dynamics, which was part of my plan.

Honestly, I feel like you would have to take a long hard look at Logan Webb's teammate, Justin Time, as an alternative. Trust me, no juggernaut team can last with bad goaltending. We have seen this in the leagues of parallel universes (the NHL), a team with franchise level forwards and a decent D-core is NOT going to be able to overcompensate for a below average goalie.

Justin Time is absolutely not that. By all means he's an elite goalie. It's easy to dismiss those numbers as the D-core helping out, or the system working well to set up some neutral zone trap, but I would make the compelling case that no team is going to have a goalie reach 40 wins and record 5 shutouts to boot if it wasn't for that goalie playing off the walls crazy. Also, least goals against in the entire league should absolutely give the goalie some credit.

My player, Leonard Wood, is a hockey player. He is not a league official, general manager, owner, etc. He has no authority over the rules of the league nor does he want any. Leonard Wood wants to play hockey. He will work with the Players Union to bargain for the best working rights and contracts but beyond that, the rules of the league to the head office. In fact, he would question the Simulation Hockey League's integrity if he was selected to change things up because he would without a doubt implement changes that positively affect his team. I suppose he would however serve on a players committee from representatives from across the league to provide input to the actual decision makers. But Woody actually implementing those rules would spell disaster for the league because the Philadelphia Forge would win 4 straight cups until they got kicked out of the league. But that won't happen because Leonard Wood is just going to stick to what he does best: play hockey.

Option 2

For me it's obvious, even with the season Logan Webb had, it's Justin Time that should have the Sarma Khan for the MVP.

The San Francisco Pride have a lot of talent on offensive, they just got the reigning MVP Chris Valentine from us, so for them having offensive success is not really a surprise.
The surprise in my opinion is that Time had one of the best season in FHM 8 for a goalie while being deep in regression.
He is first in every major categories for a goalie : Wins (by 7), Goal Against Average (by 0.02), Goals Saved Above Average (by 19.25 and getting almost to 50 is probably a record), Save % (by 0.05) and he is almost tied for first in Shutouts with 5, while playing in 54 games so it's not a matter of getting lucky with a low game played and against low competition.

So yes Justin Time have my vote.
