S78 SMJHL Awards Midseason Watchlist - sve7en - 09-02-2024

S78 SMJHL Awards Midseason Watchlist

Welcome all, to the return of the watch.
After a long S77 off-site for both Kahri and myself, we're back with the revamped committee (we hired some people), even more stats, and a return to the transparency plan we established when we were hired. The watchlists thread is a return to the standard SMJHL Awards process that we have established, some of which we'll be looping you all into soon now that we're comfortable with a lot of it. The committee has identified the below as a list of predicted finalists and likely vote getters when we reconvene to look at the S78 season next week. This is normally published coming out of the 2nd weekend of the season (between Sim Day 10 and 11), but due to the previously mentioned S77, Kahri and I were late on the hiring and have adjusted this season's schedule to allow for our new hires to learn the normal process and for our returning faces to get reps of the normal process in. Because of this, the data for these lists was cut off AFTER SIM DAY 10, and the work the team did during Week 3 obviously DOES NOT INCLUDE LAST WEEKS SIM RESULTS.

You can view the data used to generate these lists and the lists in sheet form HERE

Nice to see this much data!

But I do have one question. Looking at the Esa Anrikkanen Trophy (rookies, because I'm on a team with a whole bunch of decent rookies), I see that 17 players were chosen to be shown in the watchlist, but how were those 17 chosen?  Were those the leaders in some category that's in the spreadsheet, or are some other criteria being used to decide the watchlist?

The Anchorage D corps will be a menace for the next few seasons. Can’t wait to see how the team develops

Some were leaders, yes, though it's not explicit criteria and there's no formula to try and min-max.

Part of the issue facing Rookie of the Year each season is that it's a hard task of comparing apples to oranges to bananas. Variance in where teams are at, linemates, position, and usage (both rate and deployment) make it both an award that wide and challenging to judge properly. It's all of the complexity of Most Valuable, without the guidance of "what impact (value) did this have" to lead the discussion. In this case we see some scorers who are able to contribute defensively - (with some leeway given to the top shooter and assist leader), defenders and grindy forwards who haven't been a black hole on offense, and the two goalies being treated as 1A options who are performing above average. Sometimes this hurts rookies who are above average at everything, but as you'll see these players have good seasons and it's more a matter of the decisions being split because every person who looks at these numbers will come to a different conclusion.

Regarding your team that is a whole bunch of rookies, all 6 Armada defensemen and a winger are rookies, and the team as a whole is performing well. In this case the primary list at Day 10 includes Dieter Fruhstuck who is doing approximately all of the defensive work for the top line, and omits Micool is Gonnawinthecup, who is not seeing the minutes the other five are with similar-ish numbers. Outside of that there are Deven Rappleyea and Javelin Bodine who (combined on PP1) lead defensemen with 29 points each, omitting Abbe Wass and Barcus Juneau. This is a hard one, and all four have merit, but at that point priority was likely given to the more complete Deven and Javelin - while you could argue Abbe and Barcus are slightly better on offense despite the missing PP time (even strength scoring per 60, corsi, etc), their slightly worse defensive metrics (hits and takeaways per 60) don't do that argument any favors.

In the end, it's a close decision - I wouldn't be mad with any of the five being listed, but I fully agree with the result in that I think it's valid, that it was limited where the entire Anchorage depth chart doesn't make this list, and will reiterate that this isn't exhaustive or exclusionary to who is on the actual ballots.

In order on the sheets, no, people are just shuffling names around as they go.

For the Agante gap, yes, to the extent that there were a slightly stronger 9 and another relatively good cutoff point at 14.

In the post, no, just sorted by team.

They were on stream, but not in the post. I'll get the vote totals from Kahri and update the post within the next day and change.

Amazing job, Sve7en! I'm curious, did you calculate the OPS, DPS or it is a stat generated by FHM?
