Prospect Showcase - Making Their Case for No. 1

Feb. 17 2019
Chaz Anderson - SMJHL Beat Reporter

Let's take a look at some of the standouts so far in this years

Scoring Standouts

  1. Espen Knutsen Jr., Center (VIP) - Leads the tourney in assists (20) and is just outside the top ten in goals (8) for a total of 28 pts.  That's a 1.75 pt/gm pace. Another bright spot is his 21 shot blocks.  This guy does it all.  He's 2 points up on the next closest guy.
  2. Jaguar Johnson, Winger (RAY) - This guy can score.  With 15 goals in 16 games, Jaguar almost guarantees himself a top spot in the draft.
  3. Gunnar Söderberg, Winger (BLZ) - His pts/20min sits at 1.61 and he's second in the tourney with 26 points.  He plays a strong two-way game as well with a plus/minus of +12.
  4. Jules L'Éclair, Winger (BLZ) - The Blazers are clear cut favorites to win the tourney and Jules is a leading the way.  Second only to the aforementioned Knutsen Jr. in points, L'Éclair should go early.  His only downfall, his defence.  Opposing teams score when he's on the ice.
  5. Harry Carpet, Goalie (VIP) - Leads the tourney in save percent (.892) and GAA (3.92).  Yes, the numbers are gaudy, but it's a rookie tournament for fucks sake!

Honorable mentions: Taylor Lights, Thomas Bathory & Corey Kennedy.  This trio sits atop the D scoring race with 19, 18 & 17 points respectively.

Media Darlings & Fan Favorites

  1. Wibbly McButternutz, D (VIP) - It's debatable whether fans enjoy a earth shattering hit or an electrifying goal more.  Wibbly is a master of the former and spends quite a bit of time in the box as well, which only provides him more fan interaction time.  Here's an article I wrote about him just recently.  Legend.
  2. Tony Ford, D (VIP) - Very socially active which is bound to turn some heads at the draft, this guy can score as well.  He sits third in points for D-men and is part of the core that's helping the Vipers win some important games.
  3. Lex Peters, C (BLZ) - What a beautiful article about this man.  From the west coast, the Whalers may have their eye on him.  Who doesn't like a hometown kid?

Closing Statement

There's too many good stories too mention.  Hopefully i'll craft a writing style that you guys can enjoy.  Looking forward to reviewing the tourney at its close.
