Sydney Shaw has an incredible 6 powerplay goals leading the league this playoffs by 3x any other player, as a defenseman no less! Is there something San Francisco is doing differently to make Shaw a power play sniper? Sydney Shaw is in a league of her own on the blue line. She has the skill and creativity to create offense out of nothing, which is also why she is the assists leader among defense this post season. That is also why she is the top dog on the France powerplay. There is nothing she can't do when it comes to the game, she just thinks and sees the ice on a whole other level. To top it off she is even better without the puck, which is why she also leads all defense in hits while being among the top 10 in shots blocked. Code: 3. A total of 5 goals separates SFP and TBB’s goal differentials. The difference? SFP has 17 goals from Logan Webb with most of his teammates just feeding him puck while TBB has no player besides 1 to have less than 2 goals scored this playoffs. Which team’s strategy is more likely to pay off in these finals and why? Conventional wisdom would say that Tampa Bay has a better well rounded team, having offense from multiple sources. However it would appear they do not have that one player who is able to break open the game. It is more likely that Webb will continue to dominate as he has not been able to be stopped up to this point. Also since injuries are not a factor, their is no risk of a star player getting hurt. If injury was a possibility, I would take the Barracuda over the Pride. There is much more room for error if you have a balanced lineup top to bottom. Code: 5. If the SHL finals were to be held in another country this season, where would the best place be and why? The best place to hold the playoffs would obviously be in France. Two of the teams top stars are originally from France. Sydney Shaw, the Pride's ace defender and Johnny Wagner-Svenson, the Barracuda sniper. Both of these players deserve to play in front of their home crowd and showcase their nation's pride.

Tib 3tpe 4. Both Tibuk Soonika and Justin Time are playing extremely well for their teams, boasting very similar numbers all around. Soonika does have the edge on goals save above average however. Will this give the advantage to Tampa Bay going into the finals, or will SFP find a way to outdo the goalie playing above expectations What a legendary battle between 2 heavy weights in the current goaltending universe. Soonika versus Time and now we aren't talking about Tibuk's progressing age here, we are in fact talking about Sir Justin Time. I am convinced if he is not currently being discussed as Sir he should most definitely be knighted at some point in the not too distant future. Getting back to the topic at hand, while I am indeed writing this at the 11th hour and am not more than aware how the finals turned out I think this really turned into a top tier playoff between these 2 goalies. While Time and the San Francisco Pride did ultimately win Tibuk put up an amazing Goals Saved Above Average or GSAA. Tibuk recorded a 10.52 to Time's 3.82 which is quite an accomplishment along with posting better save percentage (.915) in comparison to Time's .908 which is a very respectable number in the SHL. Time did edge out Soonika in GAA and did clearly post a couple Shut outs through these playoffs. It was a great showdown and it is a shame we have to wait a whole year for another potential show down again. Hopefully it tilts in a different direction and we can see some puck luck in the American pan handle. (218 words) 4tpe 5. If the SHL finals were to be held in another country this season, where would the best place be and why? Wouldn't it be wild if instead of playing in a politically unstable American city we uprooted the whole SHL to Europe instead? That would be bonkers and is something I definitely think we should do because America is about to go down and no sense in dragging our glorious league with it. Seriously let's just change the American city names to European city names and call it a season. (69 words, nice) 1 TPE Total = 8 TPE

Code: 10. Written, 50 to 200+ words. The Unexpected I think the regular season should be celebrated more highly but also in a separate arena than the playoffs. The playoffs are a small sample size gamble where you can only set yourself up as best as possible, make small adjustments, and pray. The regular season is a much larger sample size with lots of opportunity to make big adjustments to the roster and lines. GMs that can consistently perform well in the long form regular season should be celebrated for their strategic and personnel skills. GMs that can do well in the playoffs should be celebrated for their tactical execution. GMs that can do both should be in the hall of fame. 113 words, +2 TPE Code: 14. Written, 50 to 200+ words.- The Procrastinator Special! Congratulations to the San Francisco Pride for winning the cup. This series was back and forth for the first leg, each team going off in a big way and then shutting down. My favorite part, and where the train went off the track, was the thrilling conclusion to game 4. Throughout the series, the Pride absolutely peppered Tibuk Soonika with shots and this was no exception. They score early, but then the 2nd period is stalemate. Johnny Wagner-Svenson comes out hot and ties it up late into the 3rd, but the game goes to overtime and all momentum fades when Robyn Nyckel scores after just 5 minutes. Losing that momentum is the difference between a 2-2 series or a 3-1 lead. In the next two games, the Pride had scored the game winning goal less than 5 minutes into the 3rd. So the story is twofold. Tampa played really hard against a high volume offense and grinded out an early lead. They lost their edge in the critical moment, and then the Pride just rolled through to the end. Going forward, Tampa should probably pay Soonika everything they want and more, then see what they can do to take the edge off their opponents offense. 205 words, +4 TPE

verification word: donky 3 TPE Task 10: Toronto ended up making it into the playoffs by one point while Atlanta had the best regular season since S71 Winnipeg. Yet in the playoffs Atlanta ended up losing the second round, while Toronto made it to the conference finals. Does regular season success matter in the long run if the team fumbles in the playoffs? Should teams give much importance to the regular season or focus all of their energy to playoffs once their team has secured a spot? Should the league in general regard the regular season results more highly? I think theres a lot of different ways to view this. At the end of the day, only one thing matters: winning the cup. However, the regular season is important because it proves your team has the quality needed to win. Yes, Atlanta faltered this year, but they should view themselves as being in a strong competitive window and it will allow them to inform roster decisions with more information to go off of. It's disappointment in results combined with the ability to be more confident going forward. Toronto, on the other hand, overachieved in the playoffs, which is great and should make the players and fans happy. However, how good is Toronto truly? Do you trust the large regular season sample size that would put them in mediocre to average territory? or did this team show their true quality in the playoffs? It's very hard to tell, and it means Toronto has to take a more difficult approach to team building. Playoff success is everything in terms of results, but the regular season shows consistency. A team like Atlanta last season should be expected to win the cup more often than they don't, while Toronto fluked to even make the CF. I'd take Atlanta's year. 4 TPE Task 14 Looks like [TEAM] won Season 80 Challenge Cup! So who won and why? What could the other team have done differently to change the result? What was your favorite part of the series? Looks like San Fran did it again. Simply put, the reason SFP won and TB lost is because its so much easier to succeed when you've done it before. Tampa hasn't won the cup in 62 seasons, back when they were the seattle riot, and that means they just don't know what it takes. the pride don't have to guess. 1 TPE Total: 8 TPE

Confirmation word: tpe 2. 213 words, 4 TPE While some defensemen are certainly talented at scoring goals in spite of their position, being a consistent powerplay triggerman requires a few things to work successfully. The first, and most obvious, is a hard, accurate shot, and particularly the ability to one-time the puck on a hard pass. Powerplay quarterbacks fall on different parts of the accuracy-velocity spectrum, but the basic skill remains the same. What gets less attention than the big shot in the highlight reel is the puck movement and positioning of all five skaters on the powerplay unit, which is what San Francisco excels at. Let a defender with a good shot fire away from the blue line with a screen in front and you'll get some goals, but it's not an optimal play. However, if smart cycling and puck movement can draw penalty killers out of position and allow the shooter to step into a shot with momentum and from 45 feet instead of 60, they stand a much better chance of beating the goalie, and this is what has allowed Shaw to achieve such goal scoring dominance as a defender. The threat of allowing Shaw to score also creates space for the rest of the unit to act, further forcing poor positioning and misreads from the PK unit. 10. 105 words, 2 TPE I think regular season success, especially in particularly extreme cases, is close to as worthy of celebration as a cup. Proving yourself to be the best in the league over the course of a large sample size in the regular seasons is a better indicator of team strength than how they do in a small sample size of a 7 (or fewer) game series. Top dogs bowing out early can certainly be disappointing but the reality of sports, and especially a sport with the inherent randomness of hockey, is that good teams will sometimes lose to other good teams no matter how good they are.

2. I believe San Francisco did what the Chicago Blackhawks did with Dustin Byfuglien. They parked them in front of the net to screen the goalie, get a few rebounds and maybe just maybe a few off the backside. Since this was a novel strategy teams were unable to design a counter play which allowed Shaw to excel on the Power play. (66) 8. San Francisco does all the things, drafting, coaching, great hard working players. They also have great asset management. If you are unable to determine the value of what you have, what is available, and how to get the best value out of every transaction. With drafting it's finding the player with the highest motivation and potential. On trading, understanding the value of opponents players and picks as well as what they desire. Do they want to make a deal to extend their window, or are they looking for futures like draft picks and prospects. SFP has been able to do this and more, they are the envy of the league and I'm sure every team wants to emulate their success. (120) 10. Regular seasons success does matter but FHM is going to sim you sometimes. Being the best over the season is a large sample size, while the playoffs, especially one series. can be devastatingly small. Sometimes the sim is going to roll against you, and it does it twice. Now you're down 0-2 and wondering what changes to make, or to stay the course. What's the best path? On average the best season standing team should have the best chance however upsets can and will happen.(85) 14. San Francisco has won the S80 Challenge Cup, and it's due to stellar performances from two key players. They would be Sydney Shaw and Logan Webb. Webb with 21G just missed being at an even Goal per game and a total of 34 points, 25 of which came at even strength. Sydney Shaw finished with 25 points and a 1.14 PPG. If they would've had that PPG during the season they would've finished with an astonishing 75 points. This only highlights the skill of the San Francisco coaching staff and the tactics they employed throughout the playoffs. For Tampa Bay, losing game 4 in overtime and letting San Francisco back in the series instead of taking a commanding 3-1 lead. I'm sure their players will have the killer instinct next season.(132) |
