Yamamoto was a bit perplexed by the Potato, so he chose to keep the Potato going into St. Louis’ next game against the Carolina Kraken. The young Mitsuharu hoped the Potato would bring luck against the SMJHL’s back to back reigning champions, and the Potato did not disappoint. Early on in the game, Carolina all-star Alexander Wachter lit the lamp, making Yamamoto question if having the Potato was actually a good thing for his team. Despite an equalizing goal shortly after Carolina’s opening salvo, the Kraken again took the lead thanks to Pokrywka’s first goal of the season. Mitsuharu was seen screaming at the Potato for cursing his team into giving up a player’s first goal of the season, a very auspicious start. On his next shift it appeared Mitsuharu was doing his best to pass the Potato to someone on the Kraken, but he could not manage to connect on any of his body check opportunities. But, after another failed check attempt, the Potato began to glow in Mitsuharu’s pocket, imbuing him with great power. He suddenly snapped out of his physical play and rifled a quick pass to teammate James Ronlain for the equalizing goal. Yamamoto quickly took the Potato out of his pocket, laid it on the ice, and all 5 of the Scarecrows bowed to its great power in celebration. The Crows would go on to win the game and the players praised the Potato in the locker room after the game. Mitsuharu quickly learned the value of the Potato this game. Despite playing the most minutes of any player on the Scarecrows, Mitsuharu did NOT want to throw any checks after he realized how magical the Potato is. Even with the early disillusionment he began to see the positives of the Potato. He is in the middle of the pack as far as total St. Louis player hits, so we may be looking at an extended Potato possession. Our Taterlytics department believes a nice winning streak could be in store for the Scarecrows thanks to the Potato’s power. SMJHL S51 Game 71 - ANA @ STL SMJHL Game 71 Advanced Taterlytics Report: Posessor: Yamamoto Mitsuharu @TML99 Team: St. Louis Scarecrows Victim: John Forfeit @Shmurph Team: Anaheim Outlaws Time: 10:57 of 2nd period Total possession time: 30:57 Hot po-take-to: Yamamoto Mitsuharu was seen carrying the Hot Potato in his suit jacket pocket when he got off the bus before the Crows’ game against the Anaheim Outlaws. The huge smile on his face laid his confidence bare: with the power of the Potato the Scarecrows were going to go on a winning streak. Unfortunately for Mitsuharu and St. Louis, they quickly learned that nothing can be taken for granted when it comes to the great Potato. The Scarecrows were riled up to start the game, but Raquel Castillo Gutierrez’s goal 30 seconds into the contest quickly deflated St. Louis’ spirits. The Outlaws would score two more times in the first period, leaving the Scarecrows to pick up the pieces during intermission. The St. Louis coaches could be heard in the hallway screaming at Mitsuharu to finally hit someone and get rid of the Potato. Despite last game’s heroics, they did not want to take any chances on a Potato curse. Mitsuharu came into the second period like a man possessed, but only managed to connect with air. Halfway through the second period Mitsuharu finally saw a golden opportunity. Mitsuharu had just won a faceoff in the Outlaws’ zone when the puck ended up deep in the corner. Anaheim’s John Forfeit lost the puck in his feet and Mitsuharu pounced, hitting Forfeit into the boards and dropping the Potato on Forfeit’s head as he skated away. Unburdened by the Potato, Mitsuharu would pick up an assist in the third period despite the Scarecrows losing the game. SMJHL Game 71 Advanced Taterlytics Report: Posessor: John Forfeit @Shmurph Team: Anaheim Outlaws Victim: N/A Team: St. Louis Scarecrows Time: N/A Total possession time: 29:03 Hot po-take-to: John Forfeit had half a game to get acquainted with the Hot Potato, and it seemed like he spent that time examining the Potato instead of focusing on playing hockey. After receiving the idol, John skated to the bench and whispered to the Potato trying to unlock its secrets. Unfortunately for Mr. Forfeit, it does not seem that the Potato divulged any information that was useful to him. The Outlaws would hold on to their early lead and win the game, but John would not play a part in the victory. Forfeit spent the rest of the second period skating circles in the neutral zone, turning only in the direction of the Potato he held in his right glove. Eventually the coaches would coax him off the ice after a few rotations, but they were getting increasingly frustrated with Forfeit’s distracted play. The third period was more of the same for John Forfeit, except six minutes into the period his circles in the neutral zone intersected with the puck’s path. John had no clue the puck was in his skates until Jakub Bruchevski blew him up with a massive open ice hit and took the puck from Forfeit. The trainers weren’t sure if Forfeit had received a concussion on the play, or if the Potato had sapped all of his mental powers, so John didn’t see the ice much for the rest of the game and he left the arena with the Potato in his possession. Forfeit isn’t a huge hitter, and it seems that the Potato may be too distracting for the Outlaw, so we may see an extended possession. |
