S39 PT #1 - Kickoff

Looking at the Montreal roster there is one glaring hole, not enough Tanners. For the first time in 3 seasons the Militia will only have one Tanner in the line up. With Jack and Connor going up to SF and HAM respectively this leaves MTL at a loss of Connor’s. While they both had long and successful careers, the Militia turn to a new strength as they lose an MVP candidate. Defense Defense Defense with 3 active returning defeners in Koenig, Elliott, and Brumm the Militia remain formidable on the blue line as they look to repeat a deep run into the playoffs. Behind these 3 returning defenders is star netminder Cedric Moreau.

The thing this years team is lacking is depth, as their 2nd line anchored by Kyle Keenan Jr. has had trouble getting anything going in the first 1/5th of the season. The team is optimistic they will hit their full stride by post season.

The Winnipeg Jets had a strong season in S38, but were anything but complacent in the offseason. The Season 37 Challenge Cup Champions fell to the Calgary Dragons in the S38 Western Conference Finals, ending their bid for back-to-back championships. They wasted no time in bolstering the S39 roster, immediately working out a deal with Seattle after their elimination. With that move, the Jets brought in forward Kyle Kylrad on a sign-and-trade for a pair of second-round draft picks, which might be the closest Seattle gets to the second round for a long time (jk <3 u Samee).

Winnipeg followed this with the addition of Crossfit Jesus via free agency. Both Crossfit Jesus and Kyle Kylrad (combining for 81 points in Season 38) join reigning Sarmad Khan Trophy, Jeff Dar Trophy, and Sergei Karpotsov Trophy winner Zach Evans on the second line for the Jets offense, creating the most dominant forward corps in the league with Jason Visser, Corey Bearss, and Pietra Volkova still holding down the top line.

There have been some changes for the Steelhawks this off season. Some are big and some are not so big. Lets start with the departures. The Steelhawks had lost Steven Stamkos Jr. despite attempting to re-sign him on an inactive deal. Even though he is a point per game in Texas right now, it is no real loss for the already strong forward group that the Steelhawks have. The Steelhawks also re-signed Abes for another season which make their forward group even stronger. Odjick, Harrak, and Konig are expected to have bigger roles on the team as well.

On the defensive side of the puck is where the Steelhawks made the biggest improvement. Connor Tanner has finally been called up from the SMJHL and will prove to have an immediate impact in the league. Sami Owens is much more stronger player. But I think the biggest move has been the trade for Zander Rhys. The Steelhawks traded a lot of picks in order to acquire the former Stevens nominee's services and strengthens an already strong backline including Ben Dover and Adam Kaiser.

Despite the one departure, I think with the additions we've made as well as the call ups, I think the team is going in the right direction and I believe that we are the favorites for the Challenge Cup.

This offseason was a busy one for the Winnipeg Jets, with their second and third line looks changing dramatically through roster moves. With Luke Fleming falling deeper into regression, the squad looked to move players in order to create an even better depth matchup on the second line than that of their cup run. Unfortunately, this meant the loss of two locker room favorites in Don Pellegrino and Theo Kane. In their place, the Jets brought in two players either in their stride or about to hit it, in Crossfit Jesus and Kyle Kylrad. With Kylrad and Jesus on the second line alongside S38 Sarmad Khan winner Zach Evans, the Jets have done what some people thought impossible - improved a stacked roster. While individual scoring is not as high, their collective play has proved to be even more dominant, with responsible shut-down defensive play heralding what could be another deep run.

The Seattle Riot had in what a lot of people to believe a 'very confusing' offseason. A team that hasn't had a great identity these past few seasons, the Riot decided to say goodbye to many familiar faces who wore the teal and white, but introduce many more people to the city of Seattle.

The Riot saw a mass exodus of elite talent from their teams. Gone is Michael McFadden, Cory Knouse, Trevor Wilson, Kyle Kylrad and Viacheslav Orlov, in what many people claimed to be the whole core of the Riot, in exchange for younger talents and draft picks. The draft saw an introduction of thirteen different drafted players, the most important ones being Liam O'Callaghan, Jacob Dorty and DeMarcus Smyth.

However, the Riot still wanted to keep the team afloat for the season, and had a glaring hole to fill in the center position. After an extremely controversial moment in the regular season, Brett Kennedy was dealt to Seattle in a three-way trade involving Manhattan and Los Angeles. Going from Championship team to what many believe to be 'bottom of the barrell', Kennedy will help the Riot get through the S39 season, although it may not be a season to remember in the state of Washington.

The biggest addition for the Texas Renegades was getting Conklin Owen back from his absolutely ridiculous season long suspension from last season. Anytime you can add a power forward of his nature – he can hit, skate, puck handle in a phone booth, play solid two way hockey and can light the lamp like no other, your team should be in good shape to win night in and night out.

Another addition to the team was Steven Stamkos Jr. and although he is naturally a center, he will end up playing wing most of the season. He doesn’t take the body, but can skate, back check and score and will round out texas’ top 6 forward lines to provide some depth and take pressure off of the first line.

On the defensive side, Black was lost to retirement and replaced with Ty Justice who will jump in on the first line with Vader. Justice likes to hit and play physical and can skate and pass well, but doesn’t score much and has trouble handling the puck.

The buffalo stampede changed a lot throughout this off-season we picked up a big name in that of Theo Kane through free agency as well as Don Pellegrino and Ivan koroviev who are both inactive but should provide great depth for us. Two of our call ups, Kevin Marks and TJ Bayley have accumulated a massive amount of TPE and should provide us with a ton of goals. Marks and Bayley are both currently in the top 10 among rookie scoring and Ivan has provided us with a ton of goals. These 4 players on top of our active core players will help this season. I do think this was a step in the right direction and we still have a ton of send downs who are soon to make their mark in the SHL and I cannot wait. Is this a cup winning team? Probably not but Buffalo is slowly inching their way to become a cup contending team.

As we get underway on the new season the Los Angeles Panthers don’t look to much different than the year before except for one face Mercer Church he was brought in the off season to round out the top 3 centre positions. He has been a great fit with the team with a very balanced build & so far, he has been off to a good start this season amounting 6 points with limited ice time. In a couple years he is going to be a top player within in the league and every team is going to be fighting over him. There is another rookie that the Panthers have added over the off-season compared to last year and it defense man Maurice Picard he had a strong season last year and it has started to carry over into his play with the Panthers thus far playing on the 3rd pair and having 6 points already he definitely isn’t hurting the chances of the Panthers making a better break for the Cup this year.
