New SHL Awards?
#16

I disagree with splitting the Stevens personally. It is genuinely too difficult to judge with GA and TA a defenders ability in his/her own zone. The other stats are too team reliant to make an best estimate on who might be the best all-around/defensive defender. I know it's tough for people to make defensive D's since they don't get any recognition, but it's the same way in the NHL. The defensive defenders aren't decorated in awards but they are some of the most important guys to the team. Take this from a guy who played a defensive defender (Buchesner) for 12 seasons. He is still one of the most rewarding players I've had even though he never was an HOF'er or Award winner, just because I felt so important to Seattle/Edmonton's top 4's

I think creating another award is too hard to determine, and just dilutes the meaning of winning best defender. Even in the NHL the defender who gets a lot of points wins. Getting points is important too, and the winners fo the Stevens are usually the best defenders who are good on both sides of the puck. We don't need a feel good award to get people to create DFD's.

Even the Dar is a struggle to really determine who is the best "two-way" "defensive" forward. Adding one for a defenseman would be silly to me.

Most blocked shots + factoring in PK time and maybe +/-?
That makes sense to me. Even though we don't have many stats that can show who is the best defensive defenseman doesn't mean that we should just ignore them when it comes award time, we do the best we can with what we have.

They should be utilized when determining who deserves the Stevens. Diluting the award into two makes two awards with even less clout.
Yes but saying the best defenseman is too broad, I think splitting it into two best defensive and offensive would he clear it up. We could also keep the Stevens for just best all around.

It is broad because the position itself has a pretty broad definition. Some times the best defenseman has a great all-around season. Some times they are a major step above everyone else offensively. But regardless winning the Stevens holds a lot of weight because of it requiring you to either be really really good at everything or be incredibly good at one thing. And because defense is such an important part of being a defenseman (compared to forward), there isn't really that need to have a two-way or defensive award. It should come with the territory of being a great defenseman.
