Third lines: End of season report
#1

1500ish words, good to be graded

Hello again

I'm back with an end of season report on each team's third line, similar to the midseason one I did here , except a little bit better I hope.

To begin, I will look at some standard average line stats, followed by standard individual stats. I will then look at some advanced line stats, followed by advanced individual stats.

Basic line stats

here's the average tpe ranking of each line

  1. detroit 342.3333333
  2. vancouver 259
  3. halifax 258.6666667
  4. Anaheim 252
  5. kelowna 246.3333333
  6. montreal 238.6666667
  7. colorado 236.6666667
  8. anchorage 218
  9. lethbridge 212.6666667
  10. st. louis 204.6666667

Key Takeaways

Honestly, compared to the midseason report (below), a lot of third lines got considerably worse. Anchorage, Vancouver, and Halifax all tanked their third line, with Detroit remaining steady, and other teams such as St. Louis and Lethbridge letting their rookies develop slowly.

347.33 TPE: Anchorage
342.33 TPE: Detroit
302.67 TPE: Vancouver
296 TPE: Halifax
256.33 TPE: Anaheim
221.67 TPE: Kelowna
221 TPE: Colorado
193.67 TPE: Montreal
193 TPE: Lethbridge
187.33 TPE: St. Louis

Here's the production of each line

  1. Line Pts
  2. detroit        83
  3. vancouver 71
  4. montreal 52
  5. Anaheim 50
  6. halifax        48
  7. colorado 37
  8. kelowna 36
  9. lethbridge 31
  10. st. louis 30
  11. anchorage 29

Key Takeaways

Detroit has a dominant team, and unsurprisingly, has a third line that dominates as well. Best ranked TPE wise, it is not shocking that they finish with the best producing third line. Vancouver finishes in second, on the back of Cullen Gray, who had a shit ton of their points. anchorage, after blowing up their non-producing third line at midseason, had a terrible line production wise; same with St. Louis and Lethbridge.

Third line grinders? or nah

  1. Line +/-
  2. detroit      37
  3. montreal 5
  4. kelowna -6
  5. colorado -12
  6. halifax        -17
  7. vancouver -18
  8. st. louis -21
  9. Anaheim -27
  10. anchorage -29
  11. lethbridge -63

Key Takeaways

I swear this isnt a typo lol
Detroit as a team is just that good, and this line has some serious two-way players. Lethbridge on the other hand, the less said, the better.
Montreal's line is the only other positive line, showing teams depth are typically unable to play good, solid, defensive hockey. Lethbridge literally can't score and genuinely can't keep the puck out of their own net at all.
Anaheim can contribute a bit offensively, but are bad defensively.
St. Louis can barely score, but are average defensively

  28. Anaheim Hendricks 202
  29. St. Louis Dangelchek 188
  30. St. Louis Strudwick 174

Notable Takeaways

St. Louis and Lethbridge have some players on the very low end of the rankings, explaining their struggles this year, although St. Louis' Hernadivic is in the top 10.
Krashwagen has middle of the pack TPE, but as you will see, no production to match lol
Unsurprising to see the top 5 in TPE, and as you will see, how their production matches up

Point Leaders
  1. Vancouver Gray        49
  2. Detroit        Kyllonen    42
  3. Halifax        Forty-One  35
  4. Detroit        Anazibf      27
  5. Anaheim Petrov 22
  6. Anaheim Bombay 19

  13. Kelowna Eriksson 14

  17. Lethbridge Vanice 12
  18. Colorado Urawa 11
  19. Kelowna Shepard 11
  20. Kelowna Barbashev 11
  21. St. Louis Strudwick 11

  23. Anaheim Hendricks 9
  24. Halifax        Namokato 9
  25. Anchorage Bischoff 7
  26. Anchorage Reeves 7
  27. Vancouver Weiser 6
  28. Lethbridge Fuhrberg 5
  29. St. Louis     Dangelchek 5
  30. Halifax      Krashwagen 4

Key Takeaways

Top 3 scorers are in their own tier (combined 126 points)
Huge cluster-jam in the middle with the majority of the third liners getting between 14-19 points
Gray led the midseason report, finished top of the line at the end of season as well
A number of players from the midseason report got promoted off the third line, good for them
Krashwagen, dangelchek, and fuhrberg were bottom of the barrel at midseason, and remained there for the second half of the season as well.

Advanced line stats

LINE PDO

PDO (also sometimes called SPSV%) = 5v5sh% + 5v5sv%.
This stat is a luck measurement. The idea is that over a large enough sample size PDO will regress towards 1000 for every player.

  1. detroit 1023.666667
  2. montreal 1017.666667
  3. st. louis 1011
  4. kelowna 1009
  5. colorado 1000.666667
  6. halifax 988.6666667
  7. vancouver 978.3333333
  8. anchorage 951
  9. Anaheim 947.3333333
  10. lethbridge 935

Key Takeaways
Detroit at this point should be excluded from the data, hard to tell if they're so good cause theyre lucky or if they're creating their own luck
St. Louis is third in PDO, and with how below average this line already is, could be closer to Lethbridge levels of horrible
Speaking of Lethbridge, are they on the opposite end of Detroit? Are they so bad cause they're unlucky, or are they unlucky cause they're bad

Line Rel. CF%

RelCF = CF% - CFoff%
In other words, your corsi minus corsi of your team when you're not on the ice

I maybe shoulda just done corsi straight up but i already got the data for this and im too lazy to redo it
  1. Anaheim 2.4
  2. detroit 2.333333333
  3. vancouver 1.3
  4. halifax 0.5
  5. anchorage -0.5
  6. montreal -3.233333333
  7. lethbridge -5.566666667
  8. colorado -7.666666667
  9. kelowna -11.33333333
  10. st. louis -13.33333333

Key Takeaways
Looking at this list, St. Louis had a very lucky third line. They were consistently outplayed when on the ice, and should have much worse numbers than they do. They are a huge drag on their team, and might need to be broken up in order for the crows to go far.
Lethbridge was more unlucky than bad, having a middle of the pack relative CF%
Detroit was surprisingly not in first for this, good for the Outlaws.

Advanced player stats

Player IPPEV

IPP = points / (goals scored while you're on the ice).
The higher this stat, the more involved you are in your team's offense.
For defensemen IPP is around 10% lower on average.

IPP helps to identify "drivers" and "passengers".
Very high IPP probably means you need better linemates (sorry).

IPPEV is calculated at even-strength

  1. Colorado Peralta 94
  2. Lethbridge Vanice 88.9
  3. Detroit        Kyllonen 87
  4. Montreal Bobby 81
  5. St. Louis Hernadivic 80
  6. Vancouver Breton 76.2
  7. Detroit        Anazibf 76
  8. Montreal Fiddler 75
  9. Vancouver Gray 74.4
  10. Kelowna Eriksson 74
  11. Detroit        Gumba 72
  12. Halifax        Forty-One 70
  13. Anaheim Petrov 66.7
  14. Montreal Gold       63.6
  15. Colorado Urawa 63
  16. St. Louis Strudwick 60
  17. Kelowna Shepard 58
  18. Kelowna Barbashev 58
  19. Colorado Last Name 56
  20. Anchorage Petrikov 55
  21. Anaheim Bombay 53.6
  22. Anaheim Hendricks 50
  23. Anchorage Bischoff 50
  24. Lethbridge Patey 50
  25. Halifax        Namokato 36.4
  26. Anchorage Reeves 33.3
  27. St. Louis    Dangelchek 33
  28. Lethbridge Fuhrberg 31.3
  29. Halifax      Krashwagen 17.4
  30. Vancouver Weiser 16.7

Key Takeaways

The top 5 of Peralta, Vanice, Kyllonen, Bobby, and Hernadivic all deserve better linemates
Hernadivic is an unsurprising name, as his two linemates are 29th and 30th in TPE
Weiser and Krashwagen are extremely bringing their linemates down, and should likely be demoted
To a lesser extent, Fuhrberg, Dangelchek, Reeves, and Namokato are not living up to their linemates play.

In the end, I was intrigued to see how each teams third lines played out over the course of the year, as I was curious about how my player and our line compared to third lines across the league. It was fun, but a grind getting everyone's stats, so as a newbie here, if anyone knows how to download players stats that could be hella helpful in the future.

Hope you enjoyed!

Why would you ever want to be on the 1st or 2nd line when you can rot on the 3rd line!
