SMJHL GM Finally a real SHL GM
Player Prompt:
Collin Gibbles actually has 3 different houses at the moment due to his long career in hockey. He has 2 in Minnesota and 1 in California. His California home was his first house that he bought during his first season over 2 decades ago as a player for the now defunct Anaheim Outlaws. Little known fact is that former Outlaw and Syndicate player Corey Kennedy stayed with Gibbles in this house during his first season on the team. During his time in Anaheim, Gibbles became engaged to Anna Kendrick and after being drafted to Minnesota, the pair bought their first house on the outskirts of the Twin Cities. They wanted a nice spacious house that was detached from city life but still close enough for Gibbles to commute to work. In his later years Gibbles has also bought a penthouse condo a block away from the Monarchs Arena. He keeps one room to himself and offers the others to new players on the team as well as traveling friends who do not want to stay in a hotel.

Moving anywhere is difficult. Moving to the opposite side of the country is even more difficult. When Pyotr Gallen finished his fourth and final SMJHL season with Vancouver, they knew that they had to start looking at real estate in Hamilton for when they got the callup to the Steelhawks. While Gallen looks for places to live in and around the GTA, they primarily look for one thing in an apartment: enough space to comfortably support living on their own. "When did real estate get so expensive?" Eventually, Gallen did find a place in Hamilton around 5 miles from the Steelhawks' arena. The move, however, was the biggest challenge to face since Pyotr still didn't own any vehicle yet. "Hi, I was wondering if I could rent a U-Haul in the largest size that your company provides..." Gallen loaded up all of their stuff into a U-Haul (that still might not have fit it all) and drove 4300 kilometers (!) across the continent to their new home in Hamilton. Unpacking all the stuff? Meh, that's a tomorrow issue.

Being an SMJHL player doesn't pay all that great and having a hometown and a summer home and a season home is just too much money. So to save a bit of cash, Jack St. Clair just sleeps in the maintenance room of the arena. This way he is never late for practice and always on time for home games and the bus to away games. He slips Guy the maintenance guy a $20 bill with the Queens face still on it, and a poutine once a week to make sure that the heat stays on and a cozy cot set up. Its not the most desirable of set ups but it works for him. It also gives him access to any concerts or performances put on at the arena, and when the ice is there he can continue to hone his craft. Pretty sure he has been spotted once or twice by other employees but they've stayed quiet thus far.

Being someone of European descent Red Kirkby actually has half an idea of how to plan a sports arena that will see thousands of people come and go from it on a regular basis. The first port of call would be to buy up all the land directly surrounding the arena and put it under the councils umbrella. The space would be turned into a public park, featuring both open green space, ample trees, a kids playground and plenty of walkways and features for people to sit, rest and socialise on. There would have to be a multi platform transport network that provided easy bus and light rail access to the stadium so that people would not have to drive there. As well as this there would be quarter devoted to bars, restaurants and late night entertainment for local residents during the off season and non game days and for the fans during season and game days.

I, new city planner, want to bring Russian greatness to Canada and the British Republic of Columbia. I want apartment blocks. A lot of apartment buildings. Gray. Or brown. All the same, like during the great Soviet era. What also lacks is coal plants, or steel factories, in Kelowna. Too much fresh air, and sometimes I miss the smog and gray sky. Sun bad. Gives cancer. Smog is good for developing better lungs.
But we Russians love colours too. We could bring colourful onion-shaped churches to Kelowna. Like in Moscow. And not only churches. Onion-shaped Walmart too. Or McDonald's. We could also add Russian shops to Kelowna. And Russian supermarkets. Supermarkets in Russia good. Not a lot of choices, have to make lines for hours, but won't have to buy a 12$ broccoli. I only made 2 million this year. How can I live with 12$ broccolis? I will also add Russian restaurant. A borscht soup shop, maybe. Or perrogies restaurant. Or vodka in schools. Please vote for me. Me good city planner. Played Sim City when I was kid.

CREATIVE PROMPT: The first thing you need when you build an arena neighbourhood is to make it accessible from multiple locations all around your town. So, the first thing I would build in my arena neighbourhood is a train station or a metro station, because you want to have a means of transportation that can move people around at a fast pace. The second thing I would build is a big pedestrian square near the building that could be set up to host outdoor events like setting screens during the playoffs which would allow people who didn’t get tickets to still come to a place where they could feel like they are part of a crowd. The best location for this type of arena would obviously be in the downtown area of the city where you can find the most people on a given day. Then, local businessmen would be able to set up bars and restaurants around the arena and make the area even better.
