Hockey Prompt

I really, really, really do not care for fighting in hockey. That just goes for my general "thing" in my sports fandom, to be honest - I don't like blood, brutality, and overt physicality (except, for some reason, for rugby). I like my sports to be more technical in nature, rewarding skill over who's more athletic. I don't really think it has a place in the game anymore in an era where there are more skill players than ever and I'm glad it's going the way of the dodo. The one defense I hear is "what if your star player gets freight trained," and to that I say: that shouldn't be up to vigilante justice, it should be through a competent player safety system. Which, frankly, the NHL does not have. But as a college hockey fan who no longer watches the NHL, it's nice to flip on a game knowing I'm getting 60 minutes of hockey uninterrupted by caveman nonsense.

HOCKEY PROMPT Written Task: In my opinion, there are both pros and cons to fighting in hockey and I am not really all for or against it so rather than picking one side I will just highlight the main points of each view point. The perceived pros to fighting in hockey can including that by allowing fighting it makes the sport safer overall by holding players accountable. Fighting also draws fans and increases the game's entertainment value. Moreover, fighting is a hockey tradition that exists in the official rules and as an unwritten code among players. In terms of drawbacks to fighting in hockey they can include that fighting in hockey leads to concussions, mental health problems, and death for players that participate in fights during their hockey careers. In addition, fighting at the professional level sets a bad example for kids who are playing at a more recreational and developmental level. Finally, fighting in hockey can glorify violence for kids watching the sport.

Cale wants to send a message and despite being a bigger framed guy he doesn't really know how to fight. So what is the best way to combat this? By being a bit of a rat. Cale would take the challenge personally and start with the cheeky stuff behind the play. You know the but end in the ribs, the slash on the top of the foot of your skate boot. Now Cale isn't a complete rat he  knows this kind of play will catch up with a guy so if push really came to shove he would drop the mits and do his best at chucking the knuckles to prove he can hold his own. One of the best parts of this is Cale is a strong guy on his skates and has some great balance so it would be more of a wrestling match with trying to toss a couple punches in more then an all out brawl. But this would also require a team that is winning big to fall into the trap that Cale has laid. Either way it is a win win for the Timber and Cale.

Player Prompt

Few players in the league have the history that follows Adelie de Pengu. You see the fights, angry little bird became well known in his SMJHL days. He was known for racking up the penalty minutes and one game even racked up 17 minutes in a single game. He spent far more time in the box than he spent on the ice! This legacy followed him as he was called up to Manhattan and he became known as a bit if a dirty bird. He cleaned up his act as he came to Chicago though as his coach taught him to turn the other cheek. Still, Chicago knows who ti turn to when they need a bit of a dust up. It always comes down to provoking thr vicious little penguin and letting him light someone up. He glides along the ice like a torpedo and absolutely lays a hit on an opponent who never sees it coming and then follows it up with ferocious flailing. The best part is it can always be played off as a penguin doing penguin things.

Player Prompt

Tummy Hurts would fight at a moments' notice. Tummy Hurts fears no man. You run the goalie? Fight Tummy Hurts. You hit Rasmus? Fight Tummy Hurts. You score on Tummy Hurts? Fight Tummy Hurts. The only thing Tummy Hurts fears is his tummy hurting, so fighting is no big deal. Tummy adamantly believes there is a place in hockey for fighting, and he has been impatiently waiting for the opportunity to rush down the rink and jersey an opposing netminder. If a game gets rowdy and a brawl breaks out, Tummy will undoubtedly be seen patrolling centre ice, wishing - nay, praying - that the other team's goalie will get himself a little too involved. Tummy is as tough as they come, except for the instances where he eats a bit too much and his tummy hurts, in which case you'll find him in the dressing room complaining to his teammates and asking for comfort.

Something happened on the day he died. Spirit rose a metre and stepped aside.
Somebody else took his place, and bravely cried. I’m a blackstar, I’m a blackstar.

I enjoy a good scrap, one of the most memorable ones I remember is when we heard the sound bite of George Laraque inviting I forgot who to a fight and telling him ''Good luck man'' in the end. That goes to show you that fighting is not, on occasions, solely about two guys beating the helmet off the other sometimes it's just about two enforcers who want to battle to try and give a momentum boost to their team. I'm not against a fight that happens following a nasty hit or when two guys who have been nagging each other for a while end up throwing down the gloves but if it's a nasty fight then well I'm against it. I'm not even against a player who is say a sniper who ends up wanting to fight if it makes sense. Checks to the head and other moves of the sort have a place in our sport than brawls if you ask me. A fight can end up clean and without consequences. Yes, I'm aware some players ended up injured but if it's one right there is such a thing as a clean fight.

Player Prompt:

An embarrassing show at home would one hundred percent NOT sit well with Viktor Hargreeves, especially when he should usually be a huge contributor on the scoresheet. Down 5 goals and the coach wants to see some signs of life from the bench? Vik is absolutely going to take the hint and go find a willing participant on the opposing team. While he is never going to be even remotely thought of as a fighter on or off the ice (an argument could be made that a toddler having a tantrum has more aggression than Hargreeves at his angriest), this kid knows how to take a punch.

Viktor spent a lot of his childhood being every bully's favourite punching bag. He may not throw any haymakers himself, but these days if and when he is ever put to the test, it'll take a lot for Vik to go down. Dude may as well be a tree when this fight happens. Though far from an enthusiast when it comes to this particular aspect of hockey, nothing upsets him more than letting the people he cares about down. If he can't score 4 goals, Viktor will happily put his face into someone else's fists to show his teammates and the fans that he's got their backs. Y'know, as long as they've got ice packs ready for him in the locker room.

Hockey prompt - Written task

To give you my short answer, I think fighting definitely belongs in hockey even tought I'm glad it is less frequent now than it was from the 80's to the early 2000's.

On one side, I'm glad fighting is less frequent since I think it allow skilled players to showcase their talent to it's fullest potential on the ice. As an exemple, I don't think Zegras could do all he his doing if the game was as phisical as it was back in the days. I'm glad fighting is a lesser part of hockey now from the perspective of the players health.

On the flip side, I think having a way for players to settle things on ice in a relatively controled way (even thought it is very dangerous) is a better alternative than leaving players with no other way tant doing things in the ref's back. As such, the only circumstances that, according to me, justify a hockey fight is settling a beef between two players or responding to a dangerous play.

Post-game interview:

- Valieva: "Yeah. Not good day. Losing 7-2. During timeout, Scarecrow looked to hit Lutz in the face. So I punch scarecrow in the face. He got mad. He said I am not cool. I am cool, Mom says I am cool all the time. He tried to hug me with his big hands. I think he wanted to fight. Said ok. Said we could meet behind the arena after game, me want to call Russian Mafia friends for fight. He danced like he wanted to fight right there. I said no, it is TV break, then we playing hockey. He still danced like he wanted to fight. The crowd was happy. So I happy. I also happy because I brought my brass knuckles. Scarecrow not happy. Said I cannot use brass knuckles. Not fair. Say stop there are kids in the arena. I hit Scarecrow. The crowd stopped cheering. Scarecrow say stop he has kids and he does not want to die. There was a lot of blood everywhere. I stopped fight. He left in ambulance. I won fight."

- Reporter: "Ok, so... that's the reason why you hit the St.Louis mascot with brass knuckles during the break?!?"

HOCKEY PROMPT
I wish hockey had more fighting in it. Sometimes people need to get punched in the face a few times to let them know they need to stop fucking around. I don't want to go back to the times when you had a dedicated face puncher on each line, but I feel having a couple goons on your 4th line can really help keep the other team in line. I'm not really a fan of staged fights, although watching two heavyweights square off can be the high point of the game. I do not like when someone jumps a guy after a big clean hit, keep your head up. The best fight to me is when a couple star players just get so fed up with each other over the course of a game or playoff series they decide to just beat the hell out of the other guy. When it is just pure emotion with all that pent up rage, then they get up afterwards still pissed off at each other and cursing all the way to the box. That is the good stuff.

Player task:

If coach wants someone to fight, mr. William Salming definitely is not the guy who does it. He has never fought and will never be. Why? Because he wants to stay on the ice. That way he can help his team to win hockey games by scoring points and defending well. From the penalty box he can not do that. That's why William Salming doesn't fight. He could land a hard hit but not a fight because hard hit could send a message too. You don't need to fight to wake up your team if you are down by five goals in a home-opener. That is a simple true. Salming is actually really bad taking penalties too. As a younger kid, he played multiple seasons without a single penalty. He defends hard but cleanly. A coach's dream, you could say. Right? Huh? Yes. Fighting is overrated. You can send a message via hard hit too.

Player Prompt - Jarrod Lakemore came into the league with a reputation as a physical player and one who would gladly drop the gloves. It did not take long for him to get into his first scuffle, as he would find himself in a fight as a SMJHL rookie during the preseason. Though he wasn't a member of the Scarecrows the previous season, the team had dropped a heated seven game series to QCC in the playoffs and were now facing them again in the pre-season. QCC jumped out to a 5-1 lead early in the second period and Lakemore decided it was time to make a statement. He found a dance partner in Jake Jackal and quickly dispatched him, letting QCC know things were going to be different this season. The game continued in a rather subdued fashion, and QCC did not score for the rest of the game. Of course, things weren't different in S67, as once again the Crows fell in 7 seven games to QCC. BUT this season will be different! After once again facing QCC in the pre-season, it was Lakemore's classmate Filip Lund who got into it with QCC's Jack St. Clair. The circumstances were different however, as the Crows were up 3-0 and it was QCC looking to set the tone. Instead, Lund would win the fight and the Crows would win the game 5-2. Will the season end differently from STL? Only time will tell. (248 words)

I always grew up seeing fighting in hockey games, so I feel it's just as much a part of the game as scoring goals, taunting fans in the penalty box and slamming fans on the sides of the rinks out of enthousiasm. I have not been watching a lot of hockey anymore lately, but i feel it's a sad thing there no longer is fighting, hockey isn't supposed to be politically correct, i just want fast paced action and some fists being thrown around. Nothing wrong with this right?

I feel that even in today's world fighting still should be possible in hockey, if you see a teammate get hit bad by a guy 2 heads bigger as him, ofcourse it's a good thing to send in your own giant to level the playing field. I feel fighting is also there to protect the weaker players, and of course, it's fun for the crowd as well. So please reinstate fighting in hockey.
